Logan Mize: ‘Welcome To Prairieville’ – Album Review

Logan Mize’s brand new album, Welcome to Prarieville is out now, October 1st on all streaming platforms. Check out our full review and listen to the brand new music below.

“There’s still a little bit of America left in America”, Logan Mize sings on the opening line of the first track, “George Strait Songs” off his brand new album, Welcome To Prairieville. No verse explains the project more: for the past decade, Mize has been chronicling the simple, middle-town America life through his songwriting, and it has all come to fruition on the 11-song project. The sonics are classic, almost 90s sounding, while still remaining modern enough. It would sound perfect on radio airwaves, as it was made to be listened to driving down backroads.

“There’s still these hardworking, great, open-minded people that want to be independent; these little towns that don’t need a Walmart, and that’s what ‘George Strait Songs’ is about”, Mize shared with us in a recent interview.

Next up, the title track “Welcome to Prairieville” was written in 2011, over ten years ago, and it ties the entire project together. “That sign ain’t right on the edge of town // And the population keeps on going down”, he sings on the first verse. “It’s a pretty drive if you’ve got the time to kill // Welcome to Prairieville”.

“I Need Mike” is the only song that Mize did not write on the project. It’s a really evocative story-song, and although it’s specific, everyone has a “Mike” they can relate this song to. Blake Chaffin penned the track and serves as Mize’s main co-writer on the album. Each of the two songwriters chose a solo-write to include on the project and “I Need Mike” was Chaffin’s. “When I put it up against the rest of the songs, I really felt like ‘I Need Mike’ was [one of] the best songs on the project”, Mize tells us. “It makes you feel something. I don’t think I could have left it off. It felt like me… it’s just as much my record as it is his.”

The album ends with closing track It’s About Time”. A tune that is probably the most stunning song sonically, and it’s a hopeful way to drive out of Prairieville. It’s visual and dreamy, and it leaves you feeling like things are going to work out both in Prairieville and outside of the town.

“But I made it home // Found a reason // And the words to rhyme // Oh, I finally feel just like myself // And it’s about time”

If you don’t know Mize’s music yet, even though he’s put out a number of albums before, in some ways this acts as a re-introduction to who he is and his songwriting style. It is full of passion and small-town soundbites that will leave anyone reminiscing for their hometown. There’s nothing that sounds like this record right now, but at the same time, it is simple and timeless. It has all the influences of Mize’s life in central Kansas, and the refined polish of the Nashville sound. Overall, it is purely a wonderful, cohesive 11-track collection.

5 Things to Expect from Logan Mize’s Album ‘Welcome To Prairieville’

We chatted with country singer-songwriter Logan Mize about his new album, Welcome To Prairieville, out this Friday, October 1st. Here are five things to expect from the project.

  1. The project has been 10 years in the making.

“This album is more of a themed album… there’s probably 60+ songs that were written for this project and there’s storylines that I completely scrapped… it became bigger than the town. It was 10 years of me developing my writing style.”

  1. When writing the opening track “George Strait Songs”, Mize knew it was the perfect opening track.

“I left Nashville four years ago and moved back to central Kansas… I loved the idea of ‘there’s still a little bit of America left in America’ as an opening line. Once the song was done and I could hear it, it felt like it had to be the opening.”

  1. The first song written for the project was the title track, “Welcome to Prairieville”

“I wrote that song back in 2011. That one is 10 years old… it was like, let’s start with the town.”

  1. “It’s About Time”, the closing track, is a solo-write by Mize.

“”It’s About Time” was written in one of the final hours, and it kind of fell out and I just knew it belonged on the project.”

  1. “I Need Mike” is the only song Mize didn’t write for the project, and there’s a reason for that.

“Blake Chaffin, who wrote almost every song with me, we both brought stacks of songs to this project. When we were sitting around going through songs, and I asked him “if you were to pick one of your solo writes which would it be?” And this was his.”

Logan Mize's new album, 'Welcome To Prairieville' comes out this Friday, October 1st.

Logan Mize: Still That Kid – Album Review

Showing off his love for his small-town life, Still That Kid is relatable, nostalgic, and filled with the heart-warming lyrics and vocals that we love from Logan Mize.

Logan Mize’s New Album “Still That Kid” is out now, January 27th

Logan Mize’s New Album “Still That Kid” is out now, January 27th

Logan Mize’s new album, Still That Kid, is out today, January 27th. It is the nostalgic story of his life growing up in small-town USA. From the album title and throughout each track he digs down to his roots and proves that he’s Still That Kid from Clearwater, Kansas. He looks back on Friday night lights, nights at the local bar, young love, and shares how that past continues to affect his life. Mize’s previous album, Come Back Road (2017) debuted Top 20 on the Billboard Country Album Sales Chart and number 2 on the iTunes Country chart. It features his hit singles “Ain’t Always Pretty” and “Better Off Gone”.

To celebrate Still That Kid, Mize will perform two livestream shows on Thursday, February 4th, live from the McPherson Opera House in his home state. The first will be at 1:30 PM CT (2:30 PM ET) and the second at 7:30 PM CT (8:30 PM ET). Each will be 45-minute acoustic performances of songs off the new album as well as fan-favorites. Doing his part to support local businesses near his hometown, Mize will be donating a portion of the livestream ticket proceeds to the McPherson Opera House. The album release livestream offers various ticket packages, giving fans the option to add an after-party pass that will include an exclusive encore performance from Mize and his wife/fellow artist, Jill Martin. For tickets and more information click here.

Still That Kid, the 13-track album includes writers Rhett Akins, Nicolle Galyon, Ashley Gorley, and Chris Destefano. Mize had pre-released several songs off the record including two versions of “I Ain’t Gotta Grow Up”, his own, and a new version with Willie Jones. Previously released songs also include “Who Didn’t”, two versions of his popular song “Grew Apart”, one with Donovan Woods, and one with Alexandra Kay, “Hometown”, and Mize’s cover of “Something Just Like This”. Fans will get to hear brand new songs like “American Livin’”, “Gone Goes On and On”, “Practice Swing”, “Get em Together”, “Prettiest Girl in the World” and “Slow”.

Here are some of our top picks from the collection...

American Livin’ (Logan Mize, Blake Chaffin)

There’s no better song to open up this album. It’s the story of a one-red light town that you’re meant to move out of, but you find yourself missing once you’re gone. There’s a lot you miss, but it’s the little things like leaving the doors unlocked, knowing your neighbors, and meaning “see ya later”. It’s the kind of song that puts you right back in a high school Friday night.

“When life was a Mellencamp song / it was faded blue jeans, on the hood of a hand-me-down Chevy / With all your first best friends / and time says you can’t go back, oh but just like that / you know what it is you’ve been missing / Friday night small town, American Livin”

It may also be one of the few songs of its kind that ends on the happy note of returning to your hometown and getting back those days you’ve been missing. “One day there’s a for sale sign on the edge of town and your roots seem to find their way back in the ground…” A friendly reminder that perhaps those days aren’t only in the past.

Grew Apart feat. Donovan Woods (Donovan Woods, Travis Wood, Logan Wall) & Grew Apart feat. Alexandra Kay (Donovan Woods, Travis Wood, Logan Wall)

After releasing this song originally as a solo single, Mize later released two different versions of the song, one with its lead-writer Donovan Woods, and the other with Alexandra Kay. The two songs together give different perspectives of the same story, without changing a word of it.

The version with Woods gives a very similar perspective as the original release, in that it is from the guy’s perspective- it’s the same side of the break-up. They have their own opinions about why the relationship ended but they’re not ready to come to terms with them just yet, so they don’t give the whole truth when people ask, they just tell the parts they want to believe themselves.

“ It’s for the best, it’s over now / wasn’t anyone’s fault it didn’t workout / she’s a good girl, just wasn’t the one / we wanted different things, we had a good run / she’s better off, and so am I / It is what it is, but it’s all a lie / I don’t tell em’ how you broke my heart, I just tell em that we grew apart ”

However, in Alexandra Kay’s version, we get a sense of the other side too. There is one thing that the two can both agree on- and it’s that the other one is more to blame. They show that the two people in a relationship can be just as upset about a break-up as the other, but will never admit it or let the other one know.

“I could tell ‘em how you came in late / I can tell ‘em how you looked me in the eye and told that lie with a straight face / I don’t know why I don’t, maybe I hope it ain’t really over / but what’s that say about me / am I that weak”

Gone Goes On and On (Josh Kear, Robert Counts, Ed Hill, Mark Irwin)

This song is about where your feelings about a break-up or losing someone can take you after a few too many drinks. Through frustration, sadness, regret, and loss, it will take you to every level of what you’re feeling when you know that person is gone for good.

“Goodbye will hit you at the speed of a one last kiss / love will walk out while you’re still holding your breath / sometimes forever is over as fast as a song / but gone goes on and on and on and on / tail lights will fade out in the blink of a single tear / it only takes a couple seconds for a comeback prayer / losing everything don’t take long / but gone goes on and on and on”

Hometown (Tony Lane, Stephen Wilson, Marv Green)

This song is about Mize’s struggle between chasing his dream of being a singer/songwriter in Nashville and missing his life and family back home in Kansas. After being gone for so long, he had a life-altering experience that made him realize that he was wasting time he’ll never get back with his family. This struggle of wanting to chase your lifelong dreams and not wanting to miss out on the rest of your life, and wishing you could do both these things at once, is all too common and isn’t an easy choice to make no matter the circumstances. The track captures that idea perfectly and shows that choosing your family and home can be greater than even the biggest of dreams.

“ I wanna be home / in my own hometown / yeah back where my roots ran wild in my barefoot stomping ground / yeah I wanna wake up to some of that cookin’ / know my way around without lookin’ / home, in my own hometown”

Prettiest Girl in the World (Logan Mize, Blake Chaffin)

Mize originally wrote this song for his wife, but after his daughter was born, he says it took on a whole new meaning. For the last five years, it has been “Violet’s Song” and now he is finally sharing it with the rest of us. Acting almost as a sequel to “Ain’t Always Pretty”, this song is the feel-good love song we needed.

“It’s hard to believe that the prettiest girl in the world needs to hear / somebody loves her as much at her worst as I do at her best / my wildest dreams I’d never guessed I’d be the one holding the prettiest girl in the world”

Slow (Dallas Davidson, Chris DeStefano, Houston Phillips)

Given the many songs Mize has given us about home, and specifically about the small-town USA, it is only right that he would give us a song about taking life slow and soaking up all that it has to offer. It’s an uplifting reminder we all need every now and then when we are always worrying about tomorrow, what’s next, and staying busy.

“ Fall in love, soak it in / do your best, be a friend / son you don’t need a reason to bring home a dozen roses / and have a drink, take a shot / save a little, spend a lot / enjoy the ride, every high every low when you drive down one of life’s road / take it slow ”

NYCS First Impression: Logan Mize ‘The Vault’ EP

Logan Mize From The Vault

Logan Mize is one of Nashville’s most prominent and upcoming artists. He joined us last year for a Swag Session, sharing some insight into what the big year was going to bring. With his Better Off Gone tour having sold out shows, new music, and a growing fan crowd, Mize has proven what can happen with his grit and determination. Over the last few weeks, Mize has shared on his Instagram sneak peeks of some of the songs on his newest EP From The Vault, giving fans an inside look at the new project.

The first track, and arguably a top hit, “Only In This Town” pays homage to the people in his hometown. Keeping him grounded and proud to be where he is from, he is reminded that he is one of them and that will never change. For this whole album, and song specifically, Mize credits his friend and tour mate, Derek Wyatt, for making him feel comfortable playing in the studio. “He was so uplifting and complimentary to all of our playing, but you can hear on the track who was bringing the most energy. He was absolutely electric as a drummer and it was contagious whether we were in the studio or on the stage,” Mize states as he remembers his friend who passed away last year.

“I Want You” opens with an acoustic guitar feel that takes you back in time. The song is about a girl that a guy is head-over-heels for. “I want you for tonight, and I want you for forever, cause I love your rebel heart, and love the crazy weather, in your eyes, how you shine, no one else will do, I want you.” Between sparkly shoes, beautiful eyes, rebel heart, and just simply everything she does, he wants her forever.

“Best Friends” came out of a time where Mize and his wife Jill were new parents and with Mize on the road a lot, there was not a lot of time spent as a family, which had him reminiscing on the old days. This song goes back to the time where it was just the two of them laughing along and flying down the road with each other. “There was a time, you and I, don’t you remember when we were best friends.” “Best Friends” gives off the nostalgia of simpler days, maybe high school or college, when there were no worries in the world and you could be caught up in the other person, a feeling everyone can relate to.

“Thinking About You” was written by GRAMMY Album Of The Year Award-winner Daniel Tashian, who would go on to co-produced Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour and songwriter Troy Verges who has well-known tracks for Tim McGraw and Little Big Town. What a perfect song to have on your EP! The track starts off with a guitar throwback feel that makes you wanna turn up the radio and bop your head. With the vibes of the rest of the album, the song fits in perfectly, adding its own unique style. The message behind the lyrics are about loving everything about someone and not being able to get them off your mind. “I’ve been thinking about you. How you walk how you talk, such a pretty mess. I see you dancing in your boots and your black dress, stone cold you’re so fine, I gotta let you know if you were mine I’d never ever let you go. When you move, when you shake it and you down, make my heart beat so loud. You’re too good to be true, yeah, I’ve been thinking about you.” This is a great song launching us right into summer and sure to be a hit on the road.

The very last track on the EP, “Good Guys” was written with Mize’s longtime friend and collaborator Blake Chaffin. It starts off with an amazing guitar riff and lyrically instantly paints a picture in your mind. The girl in the song sees right through the tough guy look yet still they go off flying into the sunset together. Looking back Mize comments, “the vocal hits me kind of raw/harsh when I listen to it now but I think we really did a good job capturing what I had in mind writing this batch of songs. This one stands out from that time period as one of my favorites.”

The EP features Mize’s abilities to write a mix of songs that are all unique, raw, authentic, and special, and it is those very things that set him apart as an independent artist. What fans may not know about the songs on this EP is that they are actually from 2013-14. During that time phase, Mize was writing a lot and brought his band into the studio to record the songs that felt the most like him. Mize stated in a press release, “I’ve recorded a lot of material since but I don’t think there’s anything out there that’s as raw and authentically me as this body of music.” We cannot wait to see him out on the road this summer!

Logan Mize Releases “Thinking About You”

Logan Mize

The independent singer-songwriter Logan Mize is giving us an even more sneak peek of his upcoming EP. His forthcoming new, five-song From The Vault EP was created for his dedicated fans and is due May 17. The tracks are from sessions recorded between 2013-2014 that he thought deserved a chance. He recently just dropped his nostalgic track “Only In This Town” and now we’re seeing a different side of his EP today (5/10) with “Thinking About You.”

“Thinking About You” is written by GRAMMY Album Of The Year Award-winner Daniel Tashian, who co-produced Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour and songwriter Troy Verges who has well-known tracks for Tim McGraw and Little Big Town. Mize credits Daniel Tashian’s demo of the song, adding in a recent press release that, “When I heard Daniel Tashian’s demo of this song, it sounded like it should be a big pop classic from a 1980’s John Hughes film. I took it in the studio with a hodgepodge of session players and road guys, and we just had a blast cutting it.” The track starts off with a guitar throwback feel that makes you wanna turn up the radio and bop your head. The song’s about loving everything about someone and not being able to get them off your mind.

“I’ve been thinking about you / How you walk how you talk / Such a pretty mess I see you dancing in your boots and your black dress / Stone cold you’re so fine / I gotta let you know if you were mine I’d never ever let you go / When you move / When you shake it and you down/ Make my heart beat so loud / You’re too good to be true / Yeah, I’ve been thinking about you”

Mize’s unique and authentic sound with a hint southern-rock and country is what sets him apart from every other artist. He’s setting the bar high for independent artists with his upcoming EP From The Vault. Check out our live session with Logan back in 2018 in the video below. Logan Mize Releases Nostalgic “Only In This Town”

Logan Mize

Kansas country artist Logan Mize is a singer-songwriter, who truly cares about his fans. With a fan-driven EP in the works, coming later this year, and his single “Better Off Gone” climbing the charts, the independent artist is keeping fans excited for more music. Mize delivers on another song, releasing “Only In This Town” today (5/3).

The song features Mize’s unique southern-rock vibe and intriguing vocals. Written by the singer with songwriter Casey Beathard, the lyrics are an ode to Mize’s hometown, but can easily make the listener nostalgic for their own hometown. “Only In This Town” is slated to be one of the five tracks off Mize’s upcoming EP, entitled From The Vault. Each song, including this cut, are tracks that the singer-songwriter has played at shows with his road band. The tracks were recorded later.

The performer credits his tour band for helping him record and finish the track, adding in a recent press release that, “It was mostly my touring band, including the late Derek Wyatt, who passed last year. Derek was the #1 reason I felt comfortable in the studio. He was so uplifting and complimentary to all of our playing but you can hear on the track who was bringing the most energy.”

The track fits in perfectly with what is popular in country music right now, while still having a unique flair to it. The song and Mize’s artistry are unapologetically raw, authentic, and special, making it easy to see why he is successfully breaking down barriers as an independent artist.

“They don’t give a damn / Who I think I am / No they hold my feet to my family name / I’m just one of them and that won’t ever change / Only in this town / Does it feel like home.”

The NYCountry Swag Session alum continues playing his headlining tour, ‘Better Off Gone Tour’ through the beginning of June, hitting the midwest area later this week For tickets and more tour information, head to loganmize.com.
