Kelsea Ballerini: ‘Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good)’ – EP Review

Kelsea Ballerini reimagines her heartfelt last EP with a new version called Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good)out now on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand-new project here.

Earlier this year, Kelsea Ballerini surprised fans with a new EP and short film called Rolling Up The Welcome MatWhile the record was intended to be a therapeutic and creative outlet for Ballerini, fans fell in love with each and every song on the raw and honest record. Breathing new life into the project, the singer-songwriter is sharing a new version of the project for fans. She calls the new record Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good).

“I thought when Alysa and I were making Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, it was something I would release and never revisit. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, and that wasn’t the point of the music. Now, in hindsight and with a full heart, I want all those people who came alongside me and supported this album to know that I will never be able to fully express my gratitude, but (For Good) is my best attempt,” shared Ballerini in a recent press release. “And I also want them to know: we move on. The best part of Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good) is knowing I don’t need to talk about this stuff anymore. My whole life is ahead of me, so this expanded version is to let people know there’s real freedom in breaking down, in facing the emotions because it gets you to where your life can really shine.”

While the original record boasted six songs, For Good adds one more song to the the story, that showcases that moving on is possible. “Mountain With A View” and “Just Married” remain the first two songs on the project. Both songs candidly share Ballerini’s breaking point at the end of her marriage.

The third song, “Penthouse (Healed Version)” marks the first monumental shift on the project. The new rendition is a live show recording of the singer breathing new life into the song with her fans by her side. Instead of singing “I kissed someone new last night. Now I don’t know where you’re sleeping baby,” Ballerini changes the lyric to “Now I don’t care where you’re sleeping baby.” The iconic change is a beautiful depiction of the messiness and beauty of healing.

On “Interlude,” Ballerini obliges fans and finally adds to the story. In an unapologetic and vulnerable way, the songstress shares more of her story, while sharing the “good girl” image that she no longer is trying to portray. While raw and personal, the song is truly a gift to fans who need to borrow from Ballerini’s strength, while they’re on their own path towards healing. Similarly, on an updated “Blindsided (Yeah, Sure, Okay),” Ballerini includes the new verse that she sang during her Saturday Night Live performance.

On the last two tracks on the project, “Leave Me Again,” and the new song, “How Do I Do This,” Ballerini looks into the future with a new perspective. On the former, Ballerini vows to never lose herself again in a relationship. While heartache is painful, she wants her fans to know that healing is possible. On the new track, Ballerini shares around her experience getting back into the dating world. The single feels like the perfect way to end a ‘healed’ version of the project.

While Rolling Up The Welcome Mat was a true masterpiece, the new Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good) is even better. This record may have started as a personal project for Ballerini, but it is truly now for everyone. “With the updated version, I am asking from my fans that they help this be ours and simply let the music be the music.”

Kelsea Ballerini: ‘Rolling Up The Welcome Mat’ – EP Review

Kelsea Ballerini releases surprise EP and short film, Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, out now on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand-new project here.

Country music is all about speaking the truth no matter what. In her surprise EP and short film called Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, Kelsea Ballerini is unapologetically speaking her truth. She gets candid about what led to her divorce, her actual marriage, and everything in between. While Ballerini always creates music that is relatable and personal, this new project is one of her best yet.

The six-track project features well-crafted songs. Three of the six songs were exclusively written by Ballerini, while the songstress enlists the help of her producer and fellow songwriter, Alysa Vanderheym on the other three. Each song unfolds into the next in a way that feels cohesive, perfect for the short film that accompanies the EP.

“The only way I’ve been able to handle my life since I was 12 was to write about it. Ironically, I started writing music because my parents got divorced; that was my therapy,” shared Ballerini. “These are six songs I wish I had last year. It’s about the complexities of the feelings you go through during a massive shift at a young age. Rolling Up the Welcome Mat was how I processed everything. It’s the way I got my feelings out of my body and heart and put them to music — which is the purest way I could’ve handled it.”

“Mountain With A View,” the first song on the project candidly shares Ballerini’s breaking point, while “Just Married” is a heartbreakingly beautiful song that depicts how it feels to go from the excitement of marriage to just going through the motions.

Similarly on “Penthouse,” Ballerini shares what it is like to have everything, but how nothing feels as it should. Lyrics like “We played the part five nights, but we were never there on the weekends, baby // We got along real nice, but when I left town, did you hate me?” Hinting at the truth of what was going on behind closed doors in Ballerini’s former marriage to fellow country music singer-songwriter, Morgan Evans.

The last two tracks, “Blindsided” and “Leave Me Again” are separated by an “Interlude,” which seems to define the moments between the privacy of the relationship to when the public found out. On “Blindsided,” Ballerini unblushingly shares her truth, responding almost directly to Evans’ song, “Over For You.”

Finally on “Leave Me Again,” Ballerini vows to never lose herself again in a relationship. While heartache is painful, she wants her fans to know that healing is possible. Rolling Up The Welcome Mat is a true masterpiece.

5 Kelsea Ballerini Songs We Wish We Heard on Country Radio

With a killer catalog of songs to choose from, we are sharing our favorite Kelsea Ballerini songs that we wish we heard on country radio. Check it out below.

  1. “Secondhand Smoke” – The First Time

This B-side from Ballerini’s debut album The First Time will always stop us in our tracks. Written about her parent’s divorce is the beautiful and show-stopping ballad “Secondhand Smoke”. There are many incredible lyrics in this song, and we think a message like this would’ve shone on country radio.

  1. “THE LITTLE THINGS” – SUBJECT TO CHANGE

This fun, 90s country-inspired bop would be perfect on country radio, listening in the car with the windows down. It has that infectious groove that you can’t help but turn up all the way.

  1. “Get Over Yourself” – Unapologetically

This fan-favorite cut off Ballerini’s sophomore project Unapologetically would have been the perfect radio single. It’s sassy, yet poised and cool, and it probably would have even crossed over to pop.

  1. “Machine Heart” – Unapologetically

Another great track off Unapologetically is “Machine Heart”. It’s not one that gets a lot of attention, and that’s partially because this record is front-to-back perfect, but it’s evocativeness really works and the way it builds sonically is stunning.

  1. “needy” – kelsea

This Julia Michaels co-write is fun and flirty and all the things an upbeat love song needs to succeed on country radio. It would have been great on country radio during the summer into back-to-school, and, similarly to other songs of Ballerini’s, has true cross-over potential.

Kelsea Ballerini Jumps in “HEARTFIRST” on Brand New Single

Kelsea Ballerini’s new single “HEARTFIRST” is out now, April 8th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

Although it has been a little while since we have heard new music from the artist, Ballerini is still enjoying the successes of her album kelsea, including a CMT nomination for Video of the Year for “Half of My Hometown” featuring Kenny Chesney at this year’s CMT Awards, coming up this Monday, April 11th.

Ballerini opened up recently to fans on her socials about the journey of kelsea and what that chapter of her life meant to her. On the two-year anniversary of its release, the artist shared that the journey of this album was one that didn’t start off the way she had envisioned it. As its release fell on the same week that the world shut down during the worldwide COVID 19 pandemic, the circumstances made her disconnect from the project, feeling like she had lost all of what she had hoped the album would become. She shared: “I spent the first few months of its life grieving the loss of what I had hoped we’d share together, and wondering if and how creatively I would bounce back.”

She goes on to speak on how her fans still showed up for her and the album, making it “the record and ‘era’ that (she’s) the most proud of.” Despite the record having two radio number ones ( “Half of My Hometown” and “Hole in the Bottle” ), two gold and two platinum songs on it, she shares what she feels is much more important when it comes to this record is that “It taught me patience, humility, and to welcome the unexpected. To loosen up on my grip on what it is I think is going to happen, and just enjoy the ride while I’m on it.” It is this same risk-taking and ‘glass half full’ attitude that shines through in “HEARTFIRST”.

With this ‘happy birthday’ post, the artist officially marked the end of the kelsea chapter. And when one chapter ends, another one begins and we now know that “HEARTFIRST” is the start of the next chapter for the artist. Highlighting an incredible take on life, and an important lesson that we have all learned over the last couple of years “HEARTFIRST” is all about living life in the moment, not worrying about outcomes or all the ‘what ifs’, and taking everything as it comes.

Written by Alyssa Vanderheym, Karen Fairchild, and Ballerini and produced by Julian Bunetta and Shane McAnally, “HEARTFIRST” is a beautiful outlook on life that perhaps we all can try to factor into our own lives a little bit more.

“Could be forever or we might break // That’s just the kind of risk that we take // My head is yelling that I could get hurt // But I’m gonna jump right in, baby with my heart first”

Kelsea Ballerini’s “half of my hometown” ft. Kenny Chesney Goes Number One

Kelsea Ballerini’s song, “half of my hometown” featuring Kenny Chesney is the number one song at country radio this week. Read about Ballerini’s hit song below…

With country radio still being a male-dominated industry, we are always so excited to see a female singer-songwriter reach the top of the charts. Perfectly timed for Women’s History month, Kelsea Ballerini has landed at the number one spot. This week, Ballerini’s song, “half of my hometown” featuring Kenny Chesney is the number one song at country radio.

The song is one of the songstress’ most vulnerable to date. It portrays the back-and-forth feelings of wanting to stay in your comfort zone, but also wanting to improve. The duet nature of the song with Chesney amplifies the already incredible track. Although unexpected, the collaboration was the perfect fit for the song.

“In their daddy’s Ford // Half of my main street’s mini skirts // Half of my main street’s dressed for church // It could use some rain and a fresh coat of paint // Half of my hometown’s still hangin’ around // Still talkin’ about that one touchdown // They’re still wearin’ red and black”

“half of my hometown” marks Ballerini’s 7th number one song and Chesney’s 35th.

Kelsea Ballerini & LANY Team Up For Wistful New Song “I Quit Drinking”

Kelsea Ballerini and LANY joined forces on a brand new song, “I Quit Drinking”. Available now, June 9th, on all streaming platforms, take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new song.

Kelsea Ballerini has been pushing the genre envelope for as long as she has been making music, and her newest collaboration is no exception. Now bridging the gap between country and indie is “I Quit Drinking” with dream-pop band LANY.

“I Quit Drinking” was written by Ballerini, Paul Jason Klein (frontman of LANY), and Nicolle Galyon – a natural write as the trio are in overlapping songwriting circles, but this was the first time the three of them had ever written together. Their sounds have always felt complimentary, but meshing indie and country is definitely new territory.

The mid-tempo track starts with a floaty piano that accompanies Ballerini’s smooth voice. In the first verse and chorus, she describes her old life-of-the-party ways and how they’ve changed since breaking up.

“wasn’t alcohol keeping us up ‘til the sun came around // thought we’d stay drunk forever but now // you’re the reason there’s no whiskey anywhere in this house”

Essentially, without each other in their life, there is no reason to drink anymore because it will just lead to missing someone you can’t have. Klein joins in gently on the second verse, with Ballerini harmonizing later on. Clearminded, he sings “waking up sober, it feels kinda nice // except that I can’t sleep at night”. As much as he needed to change, he longs for the lazy mornings and hungover memories, even if it just leads to him being in a hungover state over his ex.

The production of the song is truly an equal mesh of country and pop, as it is produced by Jimmy Robbins (Kelsea Ballerini, Maddie & Tae) and Noah Conrad (LANY, Niall Horan). Ballerini and Klein premiered the song at the CMT Awards (which Ballerini co-hosted), and afterward, she also accepted an award for her collaboration during last year’s CMTs with Halsey.

“You know where my roots are and you know who I am… but this tells me that you hear music as music, and tells me that you love when people push boundaries and explore artistry,” she tells fans. Based on Ballerini’s whole catalog, including “I Quit Drinking” she is successfully bending the definition of country music while staying true to its most important rule: three chords and the truth.

The Best Deep Cuts from Kelsea Ballerini

Already a bonafide superstar, Kelsea Ballerini has given us an amazing catalog of songs with her records. Here are some of our favorite deep cuts from her collection…

“High School”- Unapologetically

“But this ain’t high school // Where all you care about is if the pretty cheerleader thinks you’re cool”

Off her sophomore record, Unapologetically, “High School” has always been one of my personal favorites. Reminiscent of old-school Taylor Swift, Ballerini learned early how to tap into her vulnerability and knack as a storyteller.

“First Time”- The First Time

“Like nothing’s changed except the time that’s passed // And that’s why goodbye should mean goodbye // The first time”

The (almost) title track of Ballerini’s debut record is one of the standout tracks in her impressive catalog of songs. The song is a simple tune about love and heartbreak at its core, and honestly, it never gets old. The expressiveness and the emotions that soar through the track are why it makes our list!

“love me like a girl”- Kelsea

“I wish you could get inside my head // Baby, maybe then you’d understand // Why I wish you could love me like a girl”

A reflective song about knowing your worth and setting boundaries, “love me like a girl” has always been a standout on Ballerini’s third studio album, properly named Kelsea. Her vocals soar, as she shows her storytelling side on this mesmerizing song.

“Music”- Unapologetically

“When I wake up, and lay down an stay up and make out // When I say nothing // But it’s feeling something like music”

We cannot help but resonate with a song that compares love to music. This track is swoon-worthy, romantic, and fun to listen to. Ballerini may have grown as a singer and a songwriter on her newest albums, but we will always look back to this song as a representation of simpler times for the artist.

“la”- Kelsea

“It’s hard to grow and time to go // But some days I wanna stay // I got a love and hate relationship with L.A.”

A solo-write by Ballerini, “la” is a poem set to music. The personal anecdote is all about Ballerini’s love and hate relationship with the city of Los Angeles. Despite how deeply personal the song is, it is a universally relatable story about struggle.

“a country song”- Ballerini

“Whether it’s right or wrong // I stay up all night // Done it my whole life // Sometimes you gotta write // A country song”

Although this song made its premiere on the ‘A’ side of Ballerini’s record, it’s the ‘B’ side version that really made us stop and listen. The stripped-down version of “a country song” written by the songstress with two of our favorite songwriters Nicolle Galyon and Jimmy Robbins is one that speaks to our soul.

Kelsea Ballerini Scores Another Number One Song With “hole in the bottle”

Kelsea Ballerini scores another number one song with “hole in the bottle”, overtaking Luke Comb’s “Better Together.”

It is extra special when a female country artist’s song lands at the top of the charts because unfortunately, it does not happen as often as we would like. This week, Kelsea Ballerini’s song “hole in the bottle” made its debut in the top spot, breaking Luke Combs’ three-week streak and claiming Ballerini’s 6th number one song.

Since she came on the country music scene, Ballerini has gotten a lot of love by radio, scoring number one’s with her first three singles, “Love Me Like You Mean It,” “Dibs,” and “Peter Pan.” As of late, it has been a little harder for the talented singer-songwriter to get the love she deserves, as it often is for female country artists on the charts. It is about time that one of the amazing songs from her latest album kelsea, scores the top spot!

“There’s a hole in the bottle / Leakin’ all this wine / It’s already empty and it ain’t even suppertime / Honey, no, I don’t miss him / In fact, it slipped my mind / There’s a hole in the bottle of wine”

Ballerini continues to be a pioneer for women in country music. Fellow artists, Gabby Barrett and Tenille Arts, round out the top fifteen on the charts this week, and we’d love to see them make it into the top ten too with their respective songs.
