Country Artists Perform on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve went from seeing country stars performing in the pouring rain in Times Square to staying dry in Hollywood and New Orleans. Ryan Seacrest, Jenny McCarthy, Lucy Hale, and Ciara were the hosts throughout the night from coast to coast keeping us on our toes with all the performers to come.

Early on Dan + Shay performed their track “All To Myself” and their smash hit “Tequila” braving it out in the rain during their performance. Confetti dropping and the wet conditions didn’t stop the duo from having the time of their lives in rainy Times Square. Next, with Florida Georgia Line’s anticipating album Can’t Say I Ain’t Country due out on Feb. 15th, the duo performed their single “Simple” and their hit “Cruise” in New Orleans just ten minutes before the ball dropped. Along with FGL in New Orleans, Maren Morris took the stage with her hit “The Middle” that was a massive part of her and radio’s 2018.

After the ball dropped and the clock struck midnight, Kelsea Ballerini came out singing her new sassy-single “Miss Me More.” Ballerini had an incredible year and dropping this girl power anthem was just a taste of what’s to come for her in 2019. Kane Brown and Lauren Alaina sang their no. 1 duet “What Ifs,” then later Brown performed his new single “Lose It.”

It was a night full of country music on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve which certainly leads us to believe that 2019 will be a successful and promising year to come for the genre!

Popular Cross-Genre Collaborations that Happened in 2018

cross-genre collaborations

In 2018, country musicians have garnered many new fans as the genre continues to evolve and become more mainstream, even getting recognition on the Top 40 charts. One of the coolest parts of 2018 has been the inter-genre song collaborations between country music stars and other musicians, including pop-stars, rappers, and other talented artists. Below is New York Country Swag’s list of some of our favorite cross-genre musical collaborations of 2018.

“The Feeling”- The Chainsmokers & Kelsea Ballerini

Grammy-nominated country artist, Kelsea Ballerini teamed up with EDM-pop super-duo, comprised of Andrew Taggert and Alex Pall for their new track, “The Feeling.” The song continues to climb the charts, while Ballerini, Taggert, and Pall continue to perform the song live to fans, during Monday Night Football, on Ellen, and on 2018’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

“Meant to Be”- Florida Georgia Line with Bebe Rexha

We can’t have a list of the best collaborations of 2018 without mentioning Florida Georgia Line’s smash hit “Meant to Be” with superstar Bebe Rexha. (Even though the music video was technically released in 2017). The pop-country song held it’s number 1 spot for “Hot Country Songs” for 50 weeks, as well as, breaking the top 5 across the all-genre Billboard charts. Additionally, the track earned FGL and Rexha a 2019 Grammy nomination.

“The Middle”- Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey

Another EDM-country crossover, “The Middle” catapulted to the top of the charts, as country songstress Maren Morris combined her vocals with Zedd and Grey’s musical talent. The song converted many fans to Morris’ music, and showcased her versatility. Not to mention, the song is super catchy!

“Babe”- Sugarland & Taylor Swift

Gone are the days where superstar Taylor Swift is just thought of as a country artist. After making the switch to pop-star, Swift lent her voice to the country powerhouses of Sugarland in their hit “Babe” which was a big part of the duo’s comeback in 2018.

“Say Something”- Justin Timberlake & Chris Stapleton

Pop music icon Justin Timberlake and CMA Male Vocalist of the Year winner, Chris Stapleton combined their beautiful voices for “Say Something” off Timberlake’s most recent album. The duo has worked together in the past, performing Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” at the 2015 CMA Awards. Both artists prove that their talents resonate across multiple genres.

“The Champion”- Carrie Underwood & Ludacris

Fans of the NFL may recognize Carrie Underwood’s song “The Champion” with Ludacris, as the anthem for Sunday Night Football. The collaboration showcases Underwood’s powerhouse vocals with Ludacris’ hip-hop skills. The duo delivers a fresh and unique sound with this track.

“Never Be the Same”- Camila Cabello & Kane Brown

This year, Camila Cabello remixed her smash hit “Never Be The Same” with country star, Kane Brown, giving the song an equally-amazing, but different feel. Brown, who is already known for his talent in blurring genre lines, delivers impressive vocals in this cool duet.

We can’t wait to see how the genre lines will be blurred in 2019 and how country music continues to evolve. Don’t forget to follow our Spotify playlist to listen to our full list of songs.

As previously announced, their brand new album, Can’t Say I Ain’t Country is slated to be released February 15th with a headlining tour by the same name also in the works.

Just last week, Hubbard and Kelley revealed their album cover and made their record available for pre-order across all streaming platforms. Currently, fans who pre-order their fourth studio album will automatically receive five of the nineteen tracks including singles, “Simple” and “Talk You Out of It,” as well as, “Sittin’ Pretty,” “Colorado,” and their new song, “People Are Different.” Their latest song spreads the message of unity, respect, and acceptance of people who come from all different walks of life and viewpoints. Florida Georgia Line Release Steamy Video for “Talk You Out of It”

Florida Georgia Line Talk You Out Of It

The platinum-selling vocal duo, Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard, of Florida Georgia Line, continue to make waves with their killer vibe and awesome songs. Their latest single, “Talk You Out of It,” follows their charted hit “Simple,” and two other songs that have been released from their upcoming fourth studio album. The track is a slight departure from the entertainers’ typical sound, with its suggestive lyrics and slight R&B vibe; however, their newly released music video will get listeners hooked on the slow-jam if they aren’t already.

FGL shared on their website their excitement for the song and the video stating, “‘Talk You Out of It’ has a very different feel for us… It’s the baby-making song on the album, but really, BK and I are always challenging ourselves creatively and knew that we had to record it when we first heard it.”

The steamy and electric music video, directed by Justin Clough, perfectly personifies song-writers, HARDY, Hunter Phelps, Jameson Rogers, and Alysa Vanderheym’s smooth penned lyrics, embodying the message that sometimes couples want to enjoy each other at home, instead of going out on the town. The clips feature Kelley and Hubbard’s wives, Brittney Kelley and Hayley Hubbard, as the object of each of their affection. The intimate scenes and genuine seductive atmosphere of the video will captivate viewers.

Catch the duo tonight at the CMA Awards, where they are nominated in three different categories, including, ‘Vocal Duo of the Year,’ ‘Single of the Year,’ and ‘Musical Event of the Year.” As they continue to work on their new record, the Big Machine Label Group recording artists will play a 5 night-only show for fans at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, starting on December 1st. For more information, head to floridageorgialine.com.

It should also be noted that out of the top 5 songs that have reigned on the Billboard charts, Florida Georgia Line holds 3 of those spots.  Number 3 is “Cruise” and Number 5 is “H.O.L.Y.”.

NYCS Woman of the Month: Jensen Sussman

Jensen Sussman Woman of the Month

Jensen Sussman may not be a name that country music fans may know right away however her company, Sweet Talk PR, is a boutique firm specializing in entertainment and music media relations for many of country music’s biggest names such as Florida Georiga Line, Kelsea Ballerini, Dustin Lynch and more. As our April Woman of the Month, we highlight the journey Sussman took to get to where she is now as a boss of her own successful public relations company in Nashville.

Sussman moved to New York City after graduating college with a major degree in dance and a minor in biology.  She wanted to have no regrets and to pursue a career in dance in the Big Apple.  “I didn’t want to fast forward and be in my 50’s and look back and never have lived my dream of being a dancer,” she explains.  “I did the whole starving artist thing where I was teaching dance for a ballet school in New Jersey, auditioning and working retail, taking every part-time job I could to make ends meet.”  During her time hustling to live out her first dream, she landed a job working for Urban Outfitters in the women’s accessories section and fell in love with the makeup lines Hard Candy, Urban Decay and Tony and Tina.

Loving makeup, she took a job working for Bloomingdales corporate office for Tony and Tina and that is where she got her very first taste for the public relations/creative development world.  There she learned how to pitch, write press releases and work with a team of creatives on new products for the line. Realizing how much she had learned from Bloomingdales, she went on to work for a PR agency full time, Trachtenberg & Co. which repped everything from luxury brands to beauty brands and she perfected her craft, learning and truly becoming a publicist.

After a health scare forced her to move home to Nashville to be closer to the support of her family, she decided to plant some roots instead of moving right back to New York City.  Her father, who had worked in the music business, introduced her to Little Big Town at a holiday party and they just happened to be looking for a tour publicist.  Although the music industry was a change from the makeup and beauty world, Sussman gladly took the opportunity and learned all she could from their national publicist Jenny Bohler.  “Jenny ended up being my mentor and really taught me everything about country music, working music and everything about Nashville. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.” she humbly explained.

After freelancing for some time, then working for Sony Music Nashville followed by Warner Music Group, Sussman started her own company, Sweet Talk PR. One of her connections reached out to her about helping to launch an unsigned duo that was ready to release their first single to iTunes.  That duo just happened to be Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard also known as Florida Georgia Line. “FGL changed my life and the next thing I knew we started working, we launched “Cruise” and I had a company, a staff, and an amazing roster. All of the stars aligned and everything fell into place.”  The debut single from the duo stayed in the number one spot on the Hot Country Songs chart for 24 weeks and sold over 7 million copies in the U.S.

We discussed if starting her own company and having such a resounding success with her first client was scary at first, she explained “I don’t think so, I’ve always been that person that sees a challenge and goes after it. I think that sometimes I just jump and don’t necessarily look which is a good thing, because you don’t have fear, but when I’m soaring I’m like ‘Wait, stop? What’s happening?” she laughs. “I tend to just jump and not have much fear about that.”  Now six years later, Sweet Talk PR is home to megastars including, Florida Georiga Line, their latest restaurant/bar in downtown Nashville, FGL House, Kelsea Ballerini, Jerrod Nieman and Dustin Lynch.  The company also supports rising stars such as Chris Lane, Morgan Wallen, Dylan Scott and Tegan Marie.

She tells us that one of the things she loves so much about her industry and publicity, in general, is how every day can be different. “One day you can be on set covering a TV taping, if you have an artist that is on a late night TV show, your day can be bouncing around press interviews that you have to set up, or you can spend the day at a tour stop if it is a huge headlining show,”  she explains. “It can also be sitting in your office all day not leaving your desk and sending out a thousand press releases or pitches to set up a campaign to launch a single, tour or album.”

Jensen Sussman

Sussman has a team of strong women who work to make her clients happy and successful and help her company run smoothly  “For me it’s really important to surround yourself with amazing people and to create the opportunities for other women and encourage each other because we are all rising through this together, whether its male or female, we are all in this business because we love music.  As long as we put our heads down and work hard and deliver on whatever our role is in this industry, that is what will keep us motivated and keep us going.”   She credits her family and friends as well for being a great support system and tells us that they have helped her navigate working in this industry.

“I always say PR finds you, it takes a very special type of person and work ethic to be able to do this job,” she tells us.  Explaining that while people who work in the music industry do have incredible jobs, it is not always pretty and it is very hard work.  “We are so fortunate we get to do amazing things with our careers but there is the side that you have to roll up your sleeves and work, there are those days where it’s twenty-hour days, and you are up until 2 am writing a press release.  I love what I am doing so much, we are so fortunate but it’s a lot of hard work and there is a lot of ups and down through that process.”

NYCountry Swag Partners with Swerve for a Country-Music-Themed Fitness Class…

NYCountry Swag x Swerve Fitness

This past Saturday, New York Country Swag teamed up with Swerve Fitness in Midtown Manhattan to host a country-music-themed spin class.  Swerve classes are unlike other cycle classes in that each bike is positioned in a team setting, blue, green or red and lights above the bikes go off during the class defining your teammates.  Combining teamwork and technology, Swerve allows riders to become a part of a team and work towards a specific goal that is displayed on the boards in the front of the room. You feel accountable and motivated to spin to the best of your ability and that aspect makes the classes unique and fun.

During our country ride, riders spun along to Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” feat. Nelly, Shania Twain’s “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” and Luke Bryan’s “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)”. Our followers enjoyed the fitness class with their favorite music.  Thanks to our friends at Swerve for working with us to create such a fun class and a great way to kick off our morning! Tegan Marie

Tegan Marie Chats Before her Opry City Stage Debut

Tegan Marie Opry

At just fourteen years old, Tegan Marie has the poise and confidence of a veteran in this business.  She made her way to New York City last week to show off her new songs and her high energy personality.  Before taking the stage as the first artist to play The Studio at Opry City Stage in Times Square,  the singer sat down with New York Country Swag to talk about her journey so far.

“I started singing when I was 3 years old.  I stole the karaoke machine from my dad and I haven’t put down a microphone since,” she tells us.  Remembering family cookouts in her hometown of Flint, Michigan where traditional country music like Johnny Cash was frequently played.  She was signed to Sweety High, an all-girls media company when she was twelve years old and her rise to fame included covers of current country songs on YouTube. Her cover of Florida Georgia Line’s, “H.O.L.Y” (below) has racked up over 17 million views on Facebook.

Now, Tegan is writing her own music and releasing it one song at a time, starting with her latest single “Keep It Lit”.  She recalls walking into a songwriting session in Nashville with Rune Westberg and Jason and Nelly Reeves of High Dive Heart and saying “Alright guys, let’s keep it lit”.  After laughing, they realized that the word “lit” is very popular with Tegan’s generation and that there was a song idea there.  The lively song has a great melody and is definitely memorable.

As if playing the Today Show with Hoda and Kathie Lee and Opry City Stage wasn’t enough excitement for one day, right before she took the stage she found out that the video for  “Keep It Lit” had reached over one million views.

Her sold-out show at Opry City Stage featured a 60-minute high energy set filled with pop covers (Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic”, The Chainsmokers “Don’t Let Me Down”), country covers (The Band Perry’s “Done” and Florida Georgia Line’s “H.O.L.Y.) as well as a ton of original music. Fans ages ranged from 5 and 6-year-old girls which she called to stand in the front of the stage to their parents who also enjoyed watching the pint-size performer entertain. “I’m so honored to be playing the Opry City Stage, it’s a dream come true,” she exclaimed before playing an original song called “Roots”.

Tegan Marie Opry

She spent time explaining each of the songs and the story behind writing them, letting her fans in on her process.  “This song is about chasing your dreams and chasing those city lights and how ironic is it that we are here in the most beautiful city and I am definitely chasing my dreams,” she said before singing “City Lights”.  Closing her set by putting her own spin on John Mellencamp’s “Pink Houses” and then spending time meeting and signing autographs for every person in attendance. Looking forward into 2018, Tegan is excited to release new music and performing more since it is her favorite thing to do.

Be sure to follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
