Elvie Shane: ‘Damascus’ – Album Review

Elvie Shane’s brand new album, Damascus is out now, April 19th on all streaming platforms. Check out our full review and listen to the brand new music below.

For Elvie Shane, his sophomore album, Damascus, is a continuation of a story that began with his debut project, Backslider. Released in late 2021, his Broken Bow debut was an autobiography of sorts, sharing his personal journey, while his new LP continues to tell that story while mixing in those of others.

“I feel like I’ve grown a lot since Backslider,” Shane shares in a statement. “I’ve attained just about everything I’ve ever dreamed of…seen the world and made a living with music. I’ve been on top and back down in the mud. In that travel and experience, I’ve paid close attention to people more than anything. I’ve seen a lot of struggle, but in that struggle, I found common ground and inspiration,” he continues. “Damascus is a record that aims to pick a fight with what holds people down. Normal everyday Blue Collar America…my people. These are not all my stories, but they are all stories I believe to be true.”

Throughout the collection, the “My Boy” singer dabbles in hip hop, blues, soul, 80’s, and of course country. He pairs his powerful voice with choirs, female background vocalists, unexpected instrumentation, and even Little Big Town.

Produced by Oscar Charles and featuring thirteen songs written or co-written by Shane, Damascus is truly an album that makes a statement. “It’s just so raw. It makes me feel like I felt when I was a kid, pissed off at the world and rocking headphones on the school bus,” he says. “I don’t wanna ever be put in a box where I can’t explore the craziest music. And this way I had an excuse to put it all on one record.”

The album opens with “Outside Dog,” unexpectedly pairing twangy guitars with a hip-hop-meets-scat-inspired melody that finds Shane an outsider. “I’m an outside dog howling along,” He growls over thumping guitars, comparing himself to a pup who never quite fits in. It’s the perfect opener for Damascus with its unexpected sounds and message of nonconformity.

Much of the album finds Shane exploring similar themes, appreciating his Appalachian roots, while also escaping them. “What Do I Know?” is a clear example of this, a slow and moody track that finds him looking back at his raising over a downtuned guitar. The song builds to an incredible climax as the singer-songwriter growls in an almost prayerful passion, “What do I know?”

“I think red lipstick on a woman’s lips look sexy // I think coke’s okay, but it’s way damn better with Jack // I think the outlaws, Waylon and Johnny are gone forever // I think Jesus // He’s coming back // Oh, but what do I know // what do I know // I’m just a hard-working, beer-working, son of an average Joe // Like to think there ain’t nothing that I can’t fix with a hammer and crescent wrench, oh, but what do I know // what do I know // what do I know”

“Appalachian Alchemy” and “Forgotten Man” are also nods to his upbringing, with the latter a soaring Springsteen-esque anthem. “The color of my neck is still the same as my blood,” He proclaims. “Send me off to school // Try to turn me to a scholar // Can’t unpaint the blue on my collar”

Throughout Damascus, the background vocalists often shine, adding incredible depth to these already-powerful songs. While the vocalists are not always known to the listener, there’s one exception: Little Big Town. The harmonic quartet join Shane on “First Place,” a driving uptempo that finds him drowning his sorrows in the bottle. Here, he’s drinking to forget but this is a song to remember with its incredible vocals. Shane blends seamlessly with the synchrony of the iconic band, providing an epic moment that would be a live show-stopper.

The Kentucky native also touches on more sensitive topics on the album, including prison, addiction, and seeking out a fix. “Jonesin” is a wild up-tempo that finds him on the hunt for what’s next, and what’s bigger or better to give a quick fix. Meanwhile, “215634” is a tune about one’s time spent behind bars. “These 4 cold walls, they don’t change much,” He sings. “Oh My name ain’t my name no more…it’s 215634.”

“Pill” is truly a powerful and poignant moment on the album, dealing with the Opioid crisis and the effect it has on families. “’Pill’ is my story, told from the perspective of a note to me from my little brother in my most trying times. It’s an apology to those I love for the turmoil I put them through,” Shane said in a statement. “But for me this goes way beyond just what my family and I have gone through. I want to be a vessel and share other people’s struggles and experiences, even if it helps one person, that means I did my job.”

“Fan on High” offers a moment of levity on the LP with its dancehall inspired music and incredible sliding piano. Meanwhile, “Winning Horse” is a love song that features driving percussion meant to emulate a horse running as he implores someone to “take this love to the finish line.”

“Baptized” also offers a clever take on a love song, bluesy and punctuated with powerful choir-like background vocals throughout the slow groove of a track. Frankly, Shane is in no rush to discover heaven if it can’t top what he has on earth.

“If this ain’t heaven on earth // Not sure what heaven is worth // ‘Cause I damn sure ain’t in a hurry to get there // If there ain’t moments like this // Lost in the rush of your kiss // Found in the touch of your skin, out somewhere // Down that same Wild Creek Road // Where sins get set afloat// Washed by the want in your eyes // Baptized”

The album ends with the powerful “Does Heaven Have a Creek,” which also finds the singer grappling with the afterlife. It’s a Gospel-inspired piano ballad that came from questions he struggled with after the passing of his grandmother. It’s “simply the wondering mind of a believer,” shares Shane. “A testimony of hope that Heaven has a few of the simple pleasures we enjoy here on earth. Is Heaven only for A-List Christians? Is there room for a prodigal ‘Good Ole Boy’ from Kentucky just trying to live a decent life and be a good man?”

Elvie Shane is truly unapologetic yet triumphant on Damascus, blending styles and sounds with incredible vocals and honesty that creates a must-listen for music fans.

Elvie Shane Kicks Off 2024 with New Track “What Do I Know”

Elvie Shane shares brand new track “What Do I Know,” out now, January 5th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

As fans gear up for the release of Elvie Shane’s sophomore album, Damascus, the singer is plugging away at releasing new music. To kick off 2024, Shane is adding to his impressive catalog of tunes with a head-turning, new song called “What Do I Know.”

In true Elvie Shane fashion, “What Do I Know” is full of truth-telling and personal lyrics. Much like the singer-songwriter’s previous releases, the song highlights Shanes’ hard-working and country upbringing. Once again, the singer expresses how proud he is of his roots and being a son of an average Joe. The song portrays an effortless confidence without trying too hard, something we have come to love from Shane’s music.

Shane continues to showcase his staying power, song after song. “What Do I Know” is a perfect addition to the singer’s repertoire.

Elvie Shane Adds to Music Catalog with New Song “Pill”

Elvie Shane shares brand new song “Pill,'” out now, September 29th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

With each and every release, singer-songwriter Elvie Shane cements his staying power in country music. He continues to create music that is both meaningful to him and his fanbase, while keeping his feet firmly planted in traditional country sounds. His newest song, “Pill” is the perfect addition to his growing music catalog.

Shane’s new song is one of his most personal to date. “Pill,” a heart-wrenching song about battling addiction is both a musical truth and a reminder to others that they are not alone. According to Shane in a recent TikTok, the song hits close to home. “My last one dropping this year, 2023. It’s very close to the ticker as they say, a very personal story,” he begins. “I wrote this song. It was inspired by some struggles that I’ve had along the way and from the perspective of a letter to myself from little brother during some of my darkest days. I hope that it reaches somebody who needs to hear it and just makes them want to go back home and try to change things a little bit.”

The four and a half minute song might be Shane’s best song to date. Country music thrives when honesty is at the forefront, and that’s exactly what is apparent on “Pill.” This is a must listen to song!

Elvie Shane Shares Brand New Song “Jonesin'”

Elvie Shane shares brand new song “Jonesin'” out now, July 28th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

A year and a half after his debut album, Backslider, Elvie Shane is back with more original music. He recently released his new song, “Forgotten Man” and “Baptized.” Now the singer-songwriter is following up the release with his new song, “Jonesin’.”

In a recent press release, Shane shared, “”Jonesin'” is all about our vices and failures in the pursuit of satisfaction and happiness. It came with the realization that you could have everything you’ve ever dreamed of and still be left feeling empty at times. That’s just life. But that void can be a beautiful thing when used as fuel. It can piss you off enough to quit the bad habits or fire you up enough to chase the seemingly unattainable.”

“Jonesin’ puts all of Shane’s talents to the forefront. The country-rock anthem feels honest, dark, and enticing. With each lyric and complementary instrumental, the singer shares a compelling story about life, habits, and everything in between. While the song is definitely relatable, Shane’s vocals are a standout on the new track.

Shane is a unique talent in country music right now. It will be exciting to see what this new era of music continues to bring for the rising star!

Elvie Shane Releases New Song “Forgotten Man”

Elvie Shane shares brand new song “Forgotten Man” out now, March 31st, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

A year and a half after his debut album, Backslider, Elvie Shane is back with more original music. Like everything that came before it, Shane’s new song “Forgotten Man” is an ode to his upbringing and his country-rock roots. The new single is the perfect addition to the hitmaker’s growing catalog.

Written by Shane with Dan Couch, Luke Preston, and Oscar Charles, “Forgotten Man” is the ultimate song for the hard-working people who do whatever it takes to make ends meet, while still standing up for what they believe in. According to the singer this song is “the song I’ve been trying to write since I started all this.” He also shared that the American dream is something that evokes a lot of feelings, adding, “I’m wearing that [Forgotten Man] patch, too. I’m out here trying to give an honest account of who I am and put an honest effort into what I do. I actually do give a sh*t, and I will place my bet on those people I’m singing about in this song against all odds.”

“I got a little white house with a flag in the front // Way that it is, is the way that it was // Dirt turns to mud here, steel turns to rust // The color of my neck’s still the same as my blood // Daddy spent his whole life working for a dollar // Name on his patch, more like a badge of honor // Sent me off to school, tried to turn me to a scholar // Can’t unpaint the blue on my collar”

Shane is a unique talent in country music right now. It will be exciting to see what this new era of music brings!

“Four years ago, I had this idea of a Country tribute record to The Rolling Stones – the greatest rock band of all time,” shared producer, Robert Deaton. “I could not be more proud of the artists and musicians that participated on this album. Elvie Shane Heats Up Rolling Stones Classic on ‘Stone Cold Country’

Elvie Shane covers The Rolling Stones classic hit, “Sympathy For The Devil” out today on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand-new track below.

In honor of the 60th Anniversary of The Rolling Stones, country music is celebrating with a tribute album called Stoned Cold Country. Country artists celebrate the legacy of The Rolling Stones through fourteen distinct covers of some of their greatest hits. Last year, Brothers Osborne and The War and Treaty gave their best rendition of the classic, “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It).” Today, rising artist, Elvie Shane shares his version of “Sympathy For The Devil.”

The iconic track gets a countrified flair with Shane’s inviting twang. Keeping with the rock tone, the song is transformed into a country-rock anthem. With deep lyrics and an even cooler instrumental, Shane’s rendition of “Sympathy For The Devil” is one of the coolest cross-genre covers to date.

Fans can expect the full-length album, Stoned Cold Country, coming later this year. The record will feature even more iconic covers from some of your favorite artists like Zac Brown Band, Elle King, Brooks & Dunn, Ashley McBryde, and more. We look forward to hearing more tunes this year, and of course, more unexpected collaborations.

Elvie Shane: ‘Backslider’ – Album Review

Elvie Shane’s debut album Backslider is out now, October 29th on all streaming platforms. Check out our full review and listen to the brand new music below.

Earlier this year, we were introduced to a brand new recording artist in country music, Elvie Shane. We were blown away by his debut EP County Roads, which featured six country-rock songs that showcased his artistry and grit. Today, the singer-songwriter released his debut album, Backslider. The record boasts fifteen original songs that traditional and modern country fans alike will fall in love with.

The album kicks off with a stunning song called “I Will Run.” The powerful track depicts all of the instances in our lives that we normally run away from. Instead, the beautiful thing is, what we run towards. Shane has a way of flipping a poignant word on its head and making you rethink it, proof of his incredible songwriting.

Another common thread on Backslider is Shane’s ability to showcase his personal story through fun and alluring songs. His number one single “My Boy” depicts his unconventional road to fatherhood, while “My Mississippi” is the personal story of his life. Similarly, Shane brings the nostalgia on “Love, Cold Beer, Cheap Smoke” and the EP’s title-track, “County Roads.”

Shane slows things down on his previously-released “Sundress.” One of our favorites from his debut EP, “Sundress” portrays the singer’s sensitive side.  The sensual lyrics are both vulnerable and touching. Of course, the singer’s vocals also shine on the track. Proving that the artist is just as talented as a songwriter as he is a vocalist.

“We snuck off just around midnight // Threw a little red dust in her tail lights // Drove far enough to get real close // Pulled off on a no-name road // I still think about her now and then // How the night looked on her skin // Ain’t never seen a sunset like // her sundress sitting in the moonlight”

Similarly, we cannot help, but to love Shane’s song “Rocket Science.” Although somber, the new song is relatable and beautiful. The singer professes that understanding the one he loves is like learning “rocket science.” After just one listen, it is clear the singer knows a thing or two about heartache. Shane continues to break himself right open for fans on his killer collaboration with Tenille Townes, “Nothin’ Lasts Forever” as well.

Of course, Shane makes sure to double down on the country-rock elements of his artistry on his full-length record as well. “Saturday Night Me” depicts the slower elements of rock, while “Heartbreaks & Headaches” and “My Kinda Trouble” are the best of the country-rock genre!

However, the record culminates with another intricate ballad called “Miles (with my Mama).” The song is deeply personal, as it portrays the singer’s struggle with losing his father and the emotions that come from that pain. A tribute of sorts, the song digs into the good and the bad of loving and missing someone. Similar to the vulnerability of the hit, “My Boy,” “Miles” is another example of why Shane has cemented a place in country music.

Overall the fifteen-track debut is one of the best of the year. Shane is unapologetically himself. He can write, sing, and convey a story like no one else right now. Backslider is everything we hoped it would be and a must-listen for all.
