Dan + Shay’s “I Should Probably Go To Bed” Earns Them 8th Career # 1

Dan + Shay’s “I Should Probably Go To Bed” earns them their 8th career and 5th consecutive #1 as the song hits the top spot on the country charts this week.

In just a few short years, duo Dan + Shay have risen to superstardom. The GRAMMY winners and current nominees have a handful of number one hits under their belt, including their smash with pop icon Justin Bieber, “10,000 Hours” and the monumental “Tequila.” This week, Dan + Shay’s catchy tune, “I Should Probably Go to Bed” became a chart-topper too, marking the pair’s eighth career and fifth consecutive number one hit.

Released back in August after a social media hiatus by the duo, the song quickly won the hearts of fans and music lovers everywhere. The pop-country tune resonated with fans across the genre, continuing to cement Dan + Shay as superstars. “I Should Probably Go to Bed” marks a new chapter of music for the singers, as they most likely prepare for their next full-length project.

So Ishould probably go to bed (Ah) / I should probably turn off my phone / I should quit while Im ahead (Ah) / I should probably leave you alone / Cause I know in the mornin(In the mornin) / Ill be callin(Ill be callin) / Sayin’ “sorryfor the things I said / So I, yeah, I should probably go to bed

The catchy lyrics and killer instrumentals are just a couple of reasons to love the hit song. Dan + Shay know music and continue to be a perfect duo in country music. It will be just a matter of time until their next single finds its way to the top of the charts!

Country Songs That Embody 2020

The top country songs that embody 2020…

At last, 2020 is coming to an end. Despite how crazy this year has been, country music still prevailed, bringing us new songs, records, and even livestreams to enjoy. We thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of the songs that we think personified this year.
“F2020” – Avenue Beat
“Lowkey fuck 2020 / I don’t know about everybody else / But I think that I am kinda done / Can we just get to 2021”
Obviously, we have to start our list off with this certified jam! The ladies killed it with this viral song, personifying exactly how we all felt midway through quarantine. Of course, regardless, it’s such a bop.
“7 Summers”- Morgan Wallen
“Back then you used to love the river / And sippin’ on a mixer with me / Does it ever make you sad to know / That was seven summers ago”
This nostalgic Morgan Wallen tune is quite possibly one of his best to date. Despite the fact that it’s about a past relationship, the song brings back memories of better days and even more innocent times. It is also super catchy and Wallen’s vocals shine on the track.
“Black Like Me”- Mickey Guyton
“It’s a hard life on easy street / Just white painted picket fences far as you can see / If you think we live in the land of the free / You should try to be black like me”
One of the most poignant country songs arguable ever, Mickey Guyton spoke her truth with this powerful song. Making the country music industry and the world pay attention to the societal issues in regards to racism and disenfranchisement, we are so happy that this song was brought to life by the incredible artist.
“I Should Probably Go to Bed” – Dan + Shay
“In a crowd of strangers and lovers / Someone told me that you were coming so / I should probably go to bed”
The irony of this song just cannot be beat. Although it was not about the pandemic, we cannot help but think that we “should probably go to bed,” when we are fatigued from the whole year. Also, the song is just plain great, so it had to make our list.
“We Were Rich”- Runaway June
“I never thought that grass was greener / On the other side of our old chain link fence / Yeah, we were rich”
Runaway June’s latest single, “We Were Rich” was one of our favorites off their last project. The song reminds us to be thankful for what we have, even when times are tough. It is the perfect reminder for us during these last few months and into 2021.
“Six Feet Apart”- Luke Combs
“But there’ll be crowds and there’ll be shows / And light after dark / Someday when we aren’t six feet apart”
Luke Combs was honestly the king of quarantine, giving fans so much new music. This particular song is lyrically-genius. He reminds us all that the world will not be like this forever, a reminder that we definitely all need.
“Be A Light”- Thomas Rhett + Friends
“In a world full of hate, be a light / When you do somebody wrong, make it right”
Finally, we leave you with this impactful song by Thomas Rhett featuring Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin, and Keith Urban. This song is the encouragement we need in our world right now. Even in the darkest of times, there is always good in the world. If you cannot find any, be the light.

As we look forward to a better 2021, we want to thank each and every one of you who show us so much love throughout the year. We are looking forward to the new year and better days together!

Reese Witherspoon, Kelsea Ballerini, and Shay Mooney Exchange Tweets

Reese Witherspoon, Kelsea Ballerini, and Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay exchanged a series of tweets during the 2020 ACM Awards and it is absolutely hilarious.

After Day + Shay gave a chilling performance of their current single “I Should Probably Go To Bed”, Ballerini tweeted “If a genie ever came into my life, I’d spend all 3 wishes on having the vocal control and range of Shay Mooney. GOOD LORD.”

Mooney quoted the tweet, replying “Haha!!! Love you Kelsea Ballerini!! You da best. Thank you”.

Reese Witherspoon Kelsea Ballerini Tweets

But that’s not where the compliments ended. The following day, A-list actress Reese Witherspoon took to Twitter with a series of thoughtful tweets surrounding the awards show. Quoting Ballerini’s performance from the ACM Awards Twitter account, she added, “You were INCREDIBLE!!”

That’s when Mooney got back on the social media platform and things got even better. Quoting Witherspoon’s tweet, he added, “And you’re friends with Reese (Witherspoon) which makes you way cooler than me. That would be my genie wish.”

Reese Witherspoon Shay Mooney Kelsea Ballerini Tweets

Nearly two hours later, Witherspoon replied saying, “Shay Mooney… let’s be friends!  BBQ when quarantine ends?

Who doesn’t want to be friends with Reese Witherspoon? Mooney quickly replied to her tweet adding, “Yes!!! That sounds like a plan to me! I’ll bring the drinks!”

Reese Witherspoon Shay Mooney Kelsea Ballerini Tweets

We are already fans of this new friendship! Of course, we have to know… will Mooney bring *Tequila* to Witherspoon’s bbq?

While quarantine has been quiet for some, Reese Witherspoon, Dan + Shay, and Kelsea Ballerini have all kept extremely busy. Witherspoon recently announced she would be executive producing a brand new country music competition show, “My Kind Of Country”. After recently announcing the rescheduled show dates from their 2020 Tour, Dan + Shay are busy working on new music and promoting their current single “I Should Probably Go To Bed”. Ballerini released a brand new reimagined album, ballerini, the follow-up to kelsea.

Dan + Shay Release New Single “I Should Probably Go To Bed”

Dan + Shay I should Probably go to bed

After a quiet four months to reset the palate and focus on delivering their best work yet, the 2x Grammy-award winning duo have made their highly-anticipated return with a new single titled “I Should Probably Go To Bed”. The announcement took shape with an incredibly appealing teaser video that adds to the excitement of new music and predicts all good things for the familiar yet seemingly rebranded pair.

Despite the noteworthy and prominent direction of the teaser that may have been somewhat influenced by the current state of the world, Dan + Shay chose a more relaxed track to start off a new chapter of music. “I Should Probably Go To Bed” is molded as a stripped-down piano ballad, and expands as the song grows into itself. Though, with the vocal ability that Shay Mooney possesses, the opening verse is enough to be considered an entire, standalone performance. And with Dan Smyers’ production skills, which he did entirely from his home studio, the instrumental component and effects add a mesmerizing, hazy-eyed yet enlightening feel to the lyrics.

“So I should probably go to bed (Ah) / I should probably turn off my phone / I should quit while I’m ahead (Ah) / I should probably leave you alone / ‘Cause I know in the mornin’ (In the mornin’) / I’ll be callin’ (I’ll be callin’) / Sayin’ “sorry” for the things I said / So I, yeah, I should probably go to bed”

The accompanying video continues the intriguing and end-of-the-world, alternate universe feel that the teaser possessed. Though, the video becomes off-balance regarding both the camera itself and the environment surrounding all performers involved. Check it out below:

“I Should Probably Go To Bed” is the duo’s first release since October when their multi-week #1 hit collaboration with Justin Beiber “10,000 Hours” hit airwaves. The song received the most streams in country music history during the first week and is the first song by a country duo or group to debut in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 5.

After seven years of their formation and three successful albums, Dan + Shay have only scratched the surface. This next era of the 5x Platinum “Tequila” and 4x Platinum “Speechless” artists feels big. It feels like their most creative and focused artistry yet.

To keep up with Dan + Shay, follow them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

“I Should Probably Go To Bed” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS Woman of the Month: Catherine Powell

We’re bringing you stories from women who are chasing their dreams and building a life that they love with New York Country Swag’s, “Woman of the Month”.

Each month, we highlight a different female pursuing her passions. Introducing you to women who are taking risks, working relentlessly and turning their dreams into reality. These are empowering women who serve as role models and should be celebrated.

“When I was two years old, we were at the Jersey Shore on the beach and I was trying to build sandcastles and the tide kept knocking them down and I apparently stood up on my chubby little legs and yelled at the ocean saying, ‘STOP I’m not done yet’. She says I’ve spent my entire life yelling at the world to conform to me.”

Catherine Powell, our first Woman of the Month for 2020 gave incredible insight to her career as the touring photographer with artists such as Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, and Dan + Shay as well as how she got her start running her own magazine. She also was open and honest about how being a fan has given her the driving force and inspiration to pursue her career. Like many of us, she grew up being influenced by the music her parents would play, her mom being a huge country fan of artists like Vince Gill, Faith Hill, and all of the greats of the 90s. In middle school, however, she rebelled a bit and became a huge fan of the Warped Tour scene, bands like Jimmie Eat World, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, All Time Low, and May Day Parade. “My parents, God bless them, were like sure, wear this weird neon hoodie and straighten your bands and put on 7 pounds of eyeliner every day, live your life,” she laughs.

Throughout her childhood, Powell quickly learned that failing at one thing meant she would find another to way to make it work, for example, she knew from a very early age that she wanted to be a part of the music world so she took three years of guitar lessons, which she said went terribly. Her parents sat her down to discuss what kind of extracurriculars she would focus on while in high school to prepare her for college and helped guide her to pursue a career that she would thrive in, even being brutally honest about her ability to play sports, “My Dad, looked me square in the eye and said ‘You are not going to make the team, you are just going to embarrass yourself, find something else’.” she laughs but realizing once again, that those roadblocks eventually opened up to the right path.

Her father, who collected cameras, always encouraged her to take photos, she would wait in line for 6 hours before concerts to be up front with her point and shoot camera to get the best pictures of her favorite bands. At 14 years old, her father bought her a professional camera and told her to just ‘go wild’ and taking the initiative she went to the local venue and told them she wanted to take pictures there. Although she wasn’t making any money, she took that time to build up her portfolio and connections in the industry. Around this time, as she started photographing bigger artists, Powell made the decision to start NKD Magazine with one of her friends.  “I wasn’t learning as much as I wanted to about these artists that I cared so deeply about and I knew, other people cared so deeply about them too, and so that was the stepping off point. Our goal was for our interviews to go really deep and ask the questions that fans really want to know,” she explains. “We didn’t want to box in a genre, if we like all of these things, there are probably other people who like all of these things as well, why limit ourselves.”

The magazine which was available in both print and digital found a niche with two very different demographics of fans, country music and ‘nerd culture’. She was giving artists and actors that wouldn’t normally be featured in major magazines or publications a chance to really dig deep and tell their story, something that was unique to her brand. She quickly tapped into what she calls ‘the driving force of the entire world’, teenage girls. Proving that their interests and how passionate they are is what drives artists to have a single go number one on radio, to having them sell out an arena tour.

While in college in New York, Powell dug into the country scene before it became as popular as it is now, making connections with publicists and managers when artists would come through to play small shows. She photographed Kacey Musgraves and Dan + Shay at their very first New York City shows, obviously making a lasting impression on their teams. While her magazine was thriving, she always longed to be on tour with an artist and to move to Nashville. While visiting a friend in London, Powell got an email that Kacey Musgraves needed a photographer for C2C and this was only a few weeks before Golden Hour, the album that went on to win Grammy Album of the Year was released. Being a long time fan of her music, she was thrilled she got this opportunity and was then hired for a few more shows and that set the stage for a life-changing 2019 for both Musgraves as an artist and Powell as her photographer. “To be with someone who is going through all of those things, there were so many times when we looked at each other and we were like, ‘This is crazy! What are we doing?!’,” she recalls. “I had been a huge fan of Kacey since “Merry Go Round”, I was a super fan, so to be able to shoot that first show, I was stoked, but, to be able to build this relationship and have it at the right point in time was so serendipitous.”

As they say, the rest is history, winning Grammy awards, being included on the biggest lineups for summer festivals and touring the world, Catherine’s childhood dreams were coming true right alongside Kacey’s. As she continues to explain this huge part of her life, she laughs recalling a professor in college who took one look at her live work in her portfolio and said: “‘Okay, this is great, but where is your real work?” and I said this is my real work and he said, “Alright well this isn’t going to get you into museums or galleries, so I need you to think a little more creatively, commercial photography is not photography.’ That was my first impression at college. I want to contact him now and be like ‘Hey, head over to the Country Music Hall of Fame, that is a museum and my photos are in it.”

As her touring career with major artists was taking off, she had made the decision to have NKD Magazine’s 100th issue be their last. Having one dream come to an end, she was then asked to shoot a campaign for Dan + Shay with none other than pop sensation, Justin Bieber as they readied their collaboration, “10,000 Hours” which is currently sitting atop of the country charts. She also toured with Maren Morris on her GIRL The World Tour and was there to capture the vulnerability that comes along with finding out you are pregnant and having to keep it a secret from not only your fans that you are performing for but the world. “I think it’s just a really exciting privilege and honor to be allowed to be there,” she says. “I grew up being obsessed with artists and music and my whole reason for picking up a camera at the end of the day was wanting to be in the room.”

Of course, when we discuss her favorite parts of her job, its taking photos and getting to see her favorite music live but she has also discovered that connecting with fans, taking photos of them, and handing out guitar picks to the audience is so fulfilling as well. “I know what it’s like to be the kid who is hanging on the balcony, trying to express how much the song means to me and feeling like nobody is noticing how much you are pouring into this, and finding a way to show fans that we all see you and we are grateful for you, that’s what I love.”

As always, we end our conversation on her advice for anyone looking to break into the music industry and follow their dreams. She honestly said “I really think that just be a fan, be vocal about being a fan. At the end of the day, the music industry is so weird, they want to be prepared for a job but you can’t like, say that you are prepared for that job. If you go into an interview for a job where you are going to be asked specific questions where you have to know specific things, you have to prove in that interview that you know those things, that you know how to talk about them and know how to work with that world but in the music industry the second that you say you are a huge fan, people immediately think ‘Oh, is that why you want to work here?’ Like yeah, it is, why wouldn’t I?”

“If you are a fan of someone you root for them, you work harder for them and I think that’s how lives change in this world.”
