A Decade of Great Country Christmas Albums

As the decade comes to a conclusion and our final Christmas of the decade brews, we rounded up our favorite country Christmas albums of the past 10 years.

Kacey Musgraves – A Very Kacey Christmas

Released on October 28th, 2016 as Musgraves’ first Christmas album, A Very Kacey Christmas was produced by Musgraves herself, Kyle Ryan and Misa Arriaga. Musgraves describes the album as “part western swing sprinkled with bits of classic pop, hazy Hawaiian moments and child-like fun that all comes to a nostalgic, melancholy end and ultimately is very ‘me,'” and adds, “There can be a touch of sad feelings and memories during the holiday season for a lot of people so I knew when I went in to write I wanted to include all the emotions this time of year can bring out.”

On November 29th, Musgraves released The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show on Amazon Prime.

Brett Eldredge – Glow

Glow is the third studio album by Brett Eldredge. It was released on October 28th, 2016 via Atlantic Nashville and hosts the likings of “big band” signature stylistics like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby on their Christmas records Eldredge grew up on. It debuted at No. 29 on Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Country Albums chart. Eldredge recently embarked on his annual Glow Tour beginning a two-night stay at the Ryman on Dec. 4th and will be making an appearance at the Beacon Theater December 17th and 18th.

Chris Young – It Must Be Christmas

It Must Be Christmas is Young’s sixth studio album and first Christmas album released via Columbia. Young co-wrote two of the album’s ten tracks and features the likes of Alan Jackson, Boyz II Men and Brad Paisley. The originals are “Under The Weather” and “It Must Be Christmas.” On Young’s favorite Christmas records, CMT, “All my favorite Christmas records have always had one or two originals on there,” he said. “So, the fact that these came this year in writing rooms and they’re both so different, is perfect timing. ‘It Must Be Christmas’ is very different in tone than ‘Under the Weather,’ but they compliment each other. But like I said, I’ve tried to write them before and for whatever reason, they haven’t come together until this year.”

Lady Antebellum – On This Winter’s Night

Released on October 22nd, 2012 via Capitol Records Nashville, this was Lady Antebellum’s fourth studio album. On December 13th, 2012, the album was certified Gold. Produced by Paul Worley, the album includes the six tracks previously released on their On This Winter’s Night EP.

Loretta Lynn – White Christmas Blue

Lynn recorded White Christmas Blue while tracking her album at the time Full Circle. It is her 44th studio album and second Christmas album since her first Christmas album released in 1966. Produced by Patsy Lynn Russell, Lynn’s daughter, and John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s son, the album was recorded at Cash Cabin Studios in Henderson, TN and released via Sony Legacy.

Blake Shelton – Cheers, It’s Christmas

Released on October 2nd, 2012 via Warner Bros. Nashville, the album features a number of special guests including Miranda Lambert, Pistol Annies composed of Lambert, Ashley Monroe, Angaleena Presley, Kelly Clarkson, 5th Place season 1 of NBC’s The Voice contestant Xenia and Shelton’s mother Dorothy Shackleford. A Christmas rendition of Michael Bublè’s “Home” is also featured with Bublè himself.

“Time For Me To Come Home,” the song was written with Shelton’s mother, Dorothy Shackleford, inspired The Hallmark Channel holiday film, “Time For Me To Come Home For Christmas.”

Jennifer Nettles – To Celebrate Christmas

Past ABC’s CMA Country Christmas TV host released her Christmas album on October 28th, 2016 via Big Machine Records. Produced by Julian Raymond, it was Nettles’ third studio album and her first holiday album. This marks Jennifer’s first holiday project solo after Sugarland’s holiday release Gold and Green.

LeAnn Rimes – Today is Christmas

Released on October 16th, 2015, this album features holiday classics and two original songs co-written by the singer. The star also is in a Hallmark movie called It’s Christmas, Eve. In addition to acting, Rimes contributed three original songs to the soundtrack, “The Gift of Your Love,” “It’s Christmas, Eve” and “You and Me and Christmas.”

Rimes is currently on her You and Me and Christmas Tour inspired by the third track written for her Hallmark film and her opening act is our Swag Session alum, Kalie Shorr.

Rascal Flatts – The Greatest Gift of All

The Greatest Gift of All, released October 21st, 2016, was produced by the trio themselves. Making the record even more special,  the three members young children sang on “Silent Night” making it even more sweet and personal.

“It probably seems crazy that we waited this long to release a Christmas record,” said Jay DeMarcus in a statement. “We just wanted to do it right! There are certain songs I think most everyone wants to hear during Christmas, and we wanted to put our own special spin on those songs while adding in a couple of our personal favorites. We had a blast making this album, and being in the producer’s chair ourselves, makes it extra fun and challenging for us.”

Scotty McCreery – Christmas With Scotty McCreery

Season 10 American Idol winner released his holiday album on October 16, 2012, which later was certified Gold on November 26, 2012. He self-described his favorite song as “Christmas In Heaven;” a song about his grandfather who died while he was getting ready for the album release.

Thomas Rhett Releases Both an Original and Classic Christmas Song

Thomas Rhett Christmas

Country music superstar Thomas Rhett is getting us ready for the holiday season! The singer-songwriter celebrated his favorite holiday by releasing two new Christmas jams for fans to listen to all season long, including an original entitled “Christmas In The Country” and his own rendition of the classic “The Christmas Song.”

“Christmas is hands-down my favorite time of the year,” the hitmaker shares in a recent press release. “We have so many Christmas traditions in our family that included a lot of festival music, but I’ve never recorded anything myself. Lauren has wanted me to make some Christmas music for a long time, so this year felt like the right time to finally take a stab at writing something and to put my own twist on one of the all-time classics.”

Making his wife, family, and fans proud, Rhett’s new original song is an instant hit. The new track is endearing and as cheerful as they come! The singer laments about all his favorite Christmas traditions and wintery landscapes, as the sounds of jingle bells create an inviting backing track to his smooth vocals.

“We got snowflakes falling on an old true lane / Red-bow wreathes on a windowpane / Just sitting ‘round a fire with the ones who love me / Miles from a city and the crazy crowd / Where the pine trees grow and the world slows down / Way out here, yeah man I sure feel lucky / Doing Christmas in the country (Do-do, do-do, do-do)”

Keeping the spirit of Christmas alive and well, Rhett also premiered his rendition of his wife’s favorite Christmas classic “The Christmas Song.” In his version, the Grammy nominee leans on his country roots and R&B vibes to deliver a spectacular cover of the heartwarming classic laced with jazz influences. It is clear that the singer has been gearing up to record this special song for a long time coming.

We love how Thomas Rhett continues to deliver music that speaks to who he is an artist and as a family man. The singer just wrapped up his widely successful 2019 Very Hot Summer Tour last month. The sold-out tour blazed its way through major cities, including an unforgettable stop at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

To keep up with Thomas Rhett follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“Christmas In The Country” and “The Christmas Song” are now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Rachel Wammack Releases Beautiful Christmas Covers

There’s nothing like country taking over Christmas music. RCA Records Nashville’s new artist Rachel Wammack recently dropped her classic-Christmas covers of “This Christmas” and “O Holy Night” as part of a Live from Thirteen Performance. These festive releases are following her debut chart-climbing single “Damage.” The holiday renditions are just a taste of what her vocal range is capable of.

“There have been so many wonderful highs from playing the Opry and the Ryman for the first time and putting out my EP as well as my debut single ‘Damage.’ It seemed fitting to end the year with two of my favorite Christmas songs as a ’thank you’ to all of the fans who have supported me. All in all, this year has been such a blessing and I can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store,” Wammack says in a press release.

Wammack recently performed her holiday spins at WSMV’s Today in Nashville. She played “O Holy Night” on the piano and her rendition was incredibly soulful. Performing these holiday classics, these covers show her ability to conquer any song confidently.

Wammack’s continuing to showcase her talent on the road with Brett Young on his CMT ON TOUR: HERE TONIGHT which hits NYC this weekend, Sunday, December 9th. Grab your tickets here. Fans will be able to have an inside look at the run this weekend during CMT Hot 20 Countdown. Make sure to spin “This Christmas” and “O Holy Night” out everywhere at all digital retailers.

Top Original Country Music Christmas Songs

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! As Thanksgiving is behind us and the magic of the holiday season begins to fill the air, what better way to get into the spirit than turning up that holiday music? In the list below, we’re taking a look at original Christmas songs from some of our favorite country music artists.

“It’s Not Christmas”
by Brown & Gray

“It’s Not Christmas” is an emotional and heartfelt ode to one’s significant other claiming despite everything that makes it feel like Christmas, “It’s not Christmas til you come around”.  The beautiful lyrics and soft vocals make for the perfect Christmas love song. Brown & Gray joined NYCountry Swag to record the song for a LIVE Swag Session, check out the video above.

“Glow”
by Brett Eldredge

“Glow” immediately hits you with the ever-cheerful jazz, of so many classic Christmas songs. It’s a new take on the timeless Christmas love song, filled with flattering lyrics and holiday metaphors about a glowing love interest, “Your looks are evergreen/ Sweet as the angels as they sing.”

“Gold and Green”
by Sugarland

“Gold and Green” is a delicate acoustic tune that provides a description of many elements that create Christmas magic- lit up sparkling Christmas trees, tinsel in windows, flickering candles, packages and presents, children, carols, confetti, and wishes. The reiteration that “Everything looks better in gold and green,” emphasizes the extra details put into the Christmas season.

“You Make It Feel Like Christmas”
by Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton

“You Make It Feel Like Christmas” is a dance-worthy song that shows gratitude toward your lover. They brought love and joy back into your life and because of them, you are experiencing all of the wonderful elements of Christmas again- “Sweet gingerbread made with molasses/My heart skipped and I reacted.

“Present Without A Bow”
by Kacey Musgraves and Leon Bridges

“Present Without A Bow” is a great way to express appreciation to those you care about most because without them holidays would not be the same, it would be “like a present without a bow”. The joy and cheer of the holidays spent with those you love, not material things, is what makes the season special as the song gracefully explains.

“Candy Cane Christmas”
by Darius Rucker

“Candy Cane Christmas” is a sweet song detailing a Christmas Eve and morning that so many know all too well, like it is a story right out of your own living room. “Angels sittin’ high upon a tree/Watchin’ over presents patiently/Milk and cookies on a plate/Santa Clause is on his way/The kids should be fast asleep”. The familiar scene can provide nostalgia of Christmas’ past to some and a reminder of something to look forward to for others.

Check out these tracks along with a bunch of our other favorite country Christmas songs on the playlist below and make sure to give the playlist a follow as we update with new tunes throughout the holiday season!

NYCS First Impression: Jessie James Decker ‘On This Holiday’

Jessie James Decker is getting us all into the holiday spirit with her brand new studio Christmas album entitled, On This Holiday. This cheery collection of ten songs features Decker’s renditions of six holiday classics, along with four original Christmas tunes, all co-penned with Daniel Tashian: “Snowlight,” “Wonderful Day,” “Christmas In Cabo” and “Baby! It’s Christmas.” Plus, fans who purchase the album exclusively at Target will receive an eleventh bonus track entitled, “My Favorite Holiday.”

The singer-songwriter put her own personal twists on “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire),” “Santa Baby,” “Do You Hear What I Hear?,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Her distinct vocals belt out each tune with such grace.

The two standouts of these classic covers have to be “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Decker opted for a bit more of an upbeat tune with both of these songs, while the originals carry on a slower tempo. Each of them has a “sway to the beat” element.

“Snowlight” is a fun song about dancing in the snow with her husband. Decker sings in the chorus,
“Just meet me in the snowlight / Come on and dance with me tonight / The streets are shining so bright / Don’t you love the feeling in the snowlight”.

“Wonderful Day” tells the story of Decker’s version of the perfect holiday day spent with her husband. She sings in the chorus, “The countdown begins / I can’t imagine it without ya / Ain’t it fun, everybody is feeling the love / It’s a wonderful day / Feeling so good to have you home for the holiday / And I can’t wait to unwrap you / Hey, it’s a wonderful day on this holiday / And I can’t wait to spend it with you”.

“Christmas in Cabo” is an island vibe tune about spending Christmas on the beach in Cabo, rather than in the cold weather. Decker sings in the chorus, “Spending Christmas in Cabo / So long Chicago / I need sun rays on this holiday / Taking shots of tequila / So long, we’ll see ya / Let’s have our fun by the sea, adios”.

“Baby! It’s Christmas” is a cheery jam about the best aspects of Christmas time. Decker sings,  “It’s that time again where we all get to be together / The snow is falling in this frightful weather / And I can’t wait to see all the lights on the tree at night / Baby! It’s Christmas, say yeah”.

“My Favorite Holiday” tells the many reasons why Christmas is Decker’s favorite holiday. She sings in the chorus, “Oh Merry Christmas / Oh you don’t wanna miss this / It’s Santa and his sleigh / It’s Rudolph and his gang / Oh Merry Christmas, it’s my favorite holiday”

To celebrate the album’s release, the country star will be playing a holiday show at City Winery in Nashville, Tennessee on December 5th featuring special surprise guests. Tickets are available here.  On This Holiday is now available everywhere you stream or buy music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Brett Eldredge Releases Six New Songs on the Deluxe Edition of ‘Glow’

Brett Eldredge Glow Deluxe

Nobody rings in the holiday season quite like country superstar Brett Eldredge with his Christmas tunes. It is hard to believe it has been two years since the release of his Christmas album Glow. In honor of the two-year anniversary, the singer-songwriter has added six new tracks to the previous eleven song collection of holiday classics: “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “O Holy Night,” “Silver Bells,” “Sleigh Ride,” “A Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Christmas Time is Here,” as well as an A cappella version of “The First Noel”. “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “O Holy Night” and “Christmas Time is Here” are the slower of the six, while “Silver Bells,” “Sleigh Ride” and “A Holly Jolly Christmas” are upbeat and cheery.

In addition to the new tracks, Eldredge gave the deluxe version an updated look with a brand new album cover. Rather than the traditional red backdrop, he opted for an icy blue background.  Despite the fact there aren’t any new originals from the platinum-selling star on this version, Eldredge’s astounding vocals stun on each track. This assortment of songs showcases his jazz-like sound, exuding a Frank Sinatra vibe. Eldredge’s rendition of these classics are true to the originals, yet somehow still his own.

If merely listening to this album does not get you into the Christmas spirit, you may just have to see it performed live. Eldredge will bring his Christmas spectacular show to the Beacon Theatre in New York City on December 11th. Tickets are available here.

Glow (Deluxe) is now available everywhere you stream or buy music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS First Impression: Martina McBride ‘It’s The Holiday Season’

Martina McBride It's The Holiday Season

There are few distinct voices in country music that feel like home. Martina McBride’s is one of those such voices, nowhere more so evident than on her festive new album, It’s the Holiday Season. On the cheery collection, released today, the country superstar adds a surprisingly jazzy touch to some of the most classic Christmas songs, and frankly, the only thing missing on this album to make it all the more quintessential Christmas is a duet with Michael Buble.

The album opens with spirited takes on the classics, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” While it’s hard to offer a fresh take on tunes that have seemingly been recorded 19,000 times, McBride’s voice pairs perfectly with the music throughout the album, neither outshining the other. For McBride fans, the album definitely shows a different side of the singer, focusing heavily on the LP’s orchestration, rather than just her golden voice.

One of the highlights of the album is McBride’s take on “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The track could’ve easily veered off into being cheesy, but McBride offers a fresh take that’s hard not to tap your toes to. Other highlights include “Happy Holidays/ It’s the Holiday Season,” and “Home for the Holidays.” The show tune staple, “My Favorite Things” closes the album perfectly, McBride’s voice covering each and every note like a warm blanket on a cold evening.

Despite the fact that It’s the Holiday Season does not include any originals, it’s a fun take on many of the most classic Christmas songs. Interestingly, it’s an album that could’ve been recorded in the 1950’s or the 2050’s and not sounded out of place. It’s poised to be a future classic, and we can only advise you to add this one to your Christmas mix; you definitely won’t regret it.

In addition to the release of her holiday album today, McBride will be releasing her cookbook, Martina McBride’s Kitchen Mix on October 30, with the premiere of her cooking show, Martina’s Table, premiering on the Food Network on November 18th.

Additionally, McBride will be taking her holiday cheer on the road, performing with a full symphony on The Joy of Christmas Tour. Full dates are as follows:

November 23: Biloxi, MS – Beau Rivage
November 24: Jacksonville, FL – Florida Theatre
November 25: Charlotte, NC – Ovens Auditorium
November 29: Nashville, TN – Schermerhorn Symphony Center

December 4: Atlanta, GA – Atlanta Symphony Hall
