The Best Country Music Christmas Songs

No genre appreciates the true meaning of Christmas more than country music! Artists of today and old have been covering traditional holiday songs and creating original ones based on their experiences now and growing up. Here are ones we think are done the best!

Best Christmas Covers

“The First Noel” – Gabby Barrett

This is a hard song to sing, but it seems as though Barrett had no trouble reaching those extended notes at the end of the song.

“Silver Bells” – Brett Young

Young’s soft vocals capture all the sights and sounds of the holiday season.

“Sleigh Ride” – Runaway June

The girls do a mostly A cappella version of this classic country hit, adding in some sleigh bells, fiddle, and steel guitar, giving it a unique sound.

“Run Run Rudolph” – Luke Bryan

Not a commonly covered song, Luke Bryan mimics the original’s rock-n-roll spirit.

“Santa Baby” – Kelly Clarkson

Clarkson gives this seductive song a whole new feel in her recently released Christmas album, When Christmas Comes Around.

“I’ll Be Home For Christmas” – Rascal Flatts

The three harmonies make a beautiful ballad about returning home to your loved ones on Christmas.

“Mary, Did You Know” – Carly Pearce

A beautifully covered version of this religious anthem about our savior.

“You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” – Darius Rucker

Rucker released a full-length Christmas album in 2014. His cover of the classic Dr. Seuss jingle stands out.

“Last Christmas” – Taylor Swift

It’s fitting that Taylor Swift covers this breakup Christmas song so well. Did she choose this one because she sounded great on it or for another specific reason?

“Little Drummer Boy” – Carrie Underwood

Underwood’s vocal never cease to amaze, but her son Isaiah steals the show when he adorably joins his mom after the first verse.

Best Original Songs

“Take Me Home for Christmas” – Dan + Shay

The boys beg their girls to take bring them home and show them their Christmas traditions; it’s the only thing wish on their list.

Written last year during the pandemic, the girls describe the importance of Christmas and how it gives us hope and reminds us of the most important part of the year: spending time with family.

“Christmas in Blue Chair Bay” – Kenny Chesney

Only Chesney can make singing about island life during Christmas sound so wonderful.

“Glittery” – Kacey Musgraves ft. Troye Sivan

Kacey Musgraves showcases her gentle vocals as she compares Christmas decorations to the feeling she gets with this particular person.

“I’ll Be Your Santa Tonight” – Keith Urban

In this cleverly written song by Urban and Shane McAnally, he sings about how being alone on Christmas can feel extra lonely, but he can come over and make everything alright.

In this piano ballad, Andress mentions no matter where or how old she is, the holiday spirit will never leave her.

“Christmas in the County” – Thomas Rhett

“Naughty List” – Mitchell Tenpenny

Now that Thanksgiving is over, make sure you’re heading into December with the best new Christmas songs in country music. Take a look at the list below for some of our favorite original Christmas songs this season that are sure to put you in the holiday spirit!

Jingle Bell Drunk – RaeLynn

Written by: Corey Crowder, Ernest Keith Smith, and Rocky Block

In this upbeat tune, RaeLynn sings about what we’re all thinking when it comes to Christmas with the family after this year. She doesn’t care who is joining her or not, all she knows is she’s getting “Jingle Bell Drunk” this Christmas.

She released this song along with her take on “Silent Night”, on Raelynn: Merry Christmas.

“I’m getting jingle bell drunk this Christmas / I don’t give a jingle bell what, who isn’t / Listen, I’ve been naughty, I’ve been nice / Made my list and checked it twice”

Lit this Year – Florida Georgia Line

Written by: Tyler Hubbard, Brian Kelley, Corey Crowder

In a perfect combination of a traditional and a modern Christmas with the family, the boys from Florida Georgia Line make it known that that Christmas tree ain’t the only thing getting lit this year, in the duo’s first holiday song. With a feel-good tune and a hint at their very own Old Camp Whiskey, they let us know how we can get in on the fun too.

“That Christmas tree ain’t the only thing getting lit this year / There’s Old Camp in the eggnog and that fridge is full of cheers / Got some good ole Christmas spirit in this cup right here”

Neon Christmas – Mitchell Tenpenny

Written by: Lindsay Rimes, Matt Rogers, Mitchell Tenpenny

Mitchell Tenpenny makes the best of a snow-delayed Christmas in “Neon Christmas”. They may not get to go home together, but they’ll make the best of their Christmas together at whatever bar they can find in town.

This is the title track of a seven-song EP including four classic songs and two more originals: “Snow Angels” and “Naughty List”.

“Oh, let’s have a neon Christmas, baby don’t you know / Yeah, as long as we’re together it don’t matter where we go / If a cold beer, corner booth, or dive bar stool’s on your wish list / We can have a neon Christmas”

Take Me Home for Christmas – Dan + Shay

Written by: Andy Albert, Dan Smyers, Jordan Reynolds, Jordan Schmidt, Mitchell Tenpenny, Shay Mooney

Dan + Shay hit all the points of wanting to spend the holidays with your special someone in their hometown. From learning their favorite spots in town and meeting family and friends to hearing stories from high school and joining their holiday traditions.

Dan + Shay released a music video to “Take Me Home for Christmas” starring the singers themselves, their wives, children, and dogs. At the end of the video, they hint towards another song release, which was another original Christmas song from the duo, “Christmas isn’t Christmas”, which takes on a sadder side of Christmas when you’re missing the person you used to spend it with.

“Baby, won’t you take me home for Christmas? / Show me round your town / Take me where you used to watch the snow come down / All of your traditions / I wanna know ‘em all / You’ll check every box off of my list / If you take me home for Christmas”

Christmas on the Square – Dolly Parton

Written by: Dolly Parton

It’s difficult to pick a favorite off the star-studded album, A Holly Dolly Christmas, which includes songs with Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus, Michael Bublé, Willie Nelson, Randy Parton, and even Jimmy Fallon.

However, “Christmas on the Square”, a solo-write, perfectly captures the spirit of the album, the Christmas season, and Dolly’s Jolly attitude. It’ll bring you right to the center of your town during Christmas time, complete with everything that you’d need to get in the Christmas spirit from the decorations and desserts to Christmas carols and snowball fights.

“Christmas on the square / Together as each year / We joyfully meet here / To celebrate family and friends / And we all stick together / No matter whatever / It’s a wonderful town we live in / Christmas on the square”

Christmas Through Your Eyes – Lady A

Written by: Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood, Hillary Scott

Some of the best parts of Christmas time is reminiscing and recalling the traditions and excitement that came with the holiday when you were a kid. The trio sing about seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child, exactly the way Christmas should be seen.

This song is a part of Lady A’s Deluxe Album, On This Winter’s Night, which includes 16 songs, thirteen classics, and three originals

“Yeah, it’s been a while / The joy and wonder of your smile / Such a precious child / Suddenly, I’m driftin’ back in time / Seein’ Christmas through your eyes”

Christmas on the Radio – Runaway June

Written by: Sam Hollander and Martin Johnson

This song is essentially about what we’re trying to do here with this group of songs. In a lyrical mash-up of classic Christmas songs, this original is all about finally making it to that time of year where we can hear Christmas songs on the radio once again.

“Christmas on the Radio” is one of two original songs on Runaway June’s When I Think About Christmas EP, along with three classics.

“I wanna hear Christmas on the radio / Jingle Bells and Mistletoe / A soundtrack of a cold December night / it only happens once a year / Merry music to my ears / Take my hand, let’s dance under the light / I wanna hear Christmas on the radio tonight”

We Need Christmas – Maddie & Tae

Written by: AJ Pruis, Maddie Font, Matthew West, Taylor Kerr

Beautifully written, this song speaks to how much we all need Christmas in these tough times. Beyond the parts of Christmas that would heighten spirits every year like your favorite movies and songs or seeing friends and family, it’s the hope that Christmas can be the healer of an especially difficult and trying year.

This is the title track of their EP, which includes four classic Christmas songs as well as another original, “Merry Married Christmas”, a song about the exciting time as newlyweds and all the firsts that come with spending that first Christmas together.

“That’s what we need right now / This world could use a little healing / Our hearts could surely use something to believe in / We Need Christmas now more than ever / Bring us together / We need Christmas, come on December / Help us remember / The joy, the peace, and the hope that love can bring / Oh, we need Christmas”

Christmas Always Finds Me – Ingrid Andress

Written by: Derrick Southerland, Ingrid Andress, Sam Ellis

Taking us to her softer side and reminding us of how the holidays can be emotional and not always the most exciting of times, Ingrid Andress once again delivers with incredible lyrics and vocals. This song tells us that even when you’re in doubt, Christmas always has a way of coming around no matter where you’re at in life, and is able to bring you back to that happy place, just like when you were a kid.

“When Silver Bells and Silent Night / And mistletoe’s nowhere in sight / With no chance of snow falling down / Another year older / Little harder to believe / But somehow Christmas always finds me”

Let There Be Peace – Carrie Underwood

Written by: Brett James, Carrie Underwood, David Garcia

In this gospel-style song where Carrie Underwood shows off her incredible vocals and range, she also reminds us of the bigger picture of the holidays that we often forget while being consumed with mainstream traditions.

The song is a part of an eleven-track album, My Gift, which features another original song, “Hallelujah”, which Underwood duets with John Legend.

“Let there be peace / Peace to every nation / Let there be hope / For all the world to see / Let there be love and joy to all the children / Let there be peace on Earth for you and me”

Carrie Underwood’s Christmas Album ‘My Gift’ is Here

Carrie Underwood’s Christmas Album is finally here and although it’s only September, it seems the holidays have come early. The country superstar has recorded multiple holiday tracks since winning American Idol in 2005, but today’s release titled My Gift is the first full-length Christmas album of her 15+ year career.

Carrie Underwood My Gift

With a mix of Christmas classics like “O Holy Night”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “Mary Did You Know”, and “O Come All Ye Faithful”, plus original songs sure to become holiday favorites such as “Let There Be Peace”, “Sweet Baby Jesus”, and “Hallelujah”, the album truly has something for everyone. There are even special guests including John Legend and a very unique ‘Little Drummer Boy’, Underwood’s 5-year-old son, Isaiah Fisher.

The record is full of gospel and soul and showcases two of Carrie Underwoods’ most notable qualities; her killer pipes and her religious devotion. The album has plenty of powerful registers known around the world, but fans will also see a softer side of Underwood’s voice throughout the project as she lends gentler vocals to the spiritual lyrics. The singer-songwriter (plus lifestyle brand entrepreneur and most recently best-selling author) has always put her faith front and center in her career and this project is no different. Even the name of the album, “My Gift” came from a place of worship.

“I tried to think about the songs that were in it and one of my favorites is “Little Drummer Boy” because the sentiment behind it is so honest,” Underwood said in a teaser video for the project earlier this year. “They’re bringing gifts to baby Jesus and he doesn’t have anything, he’s poor. So he says ‘I’m gonna play my drum for him, that’s what I have’. And to me, that is a gift that was given to him by God. I love music. I love singing. That is my personal gift that I have that I am blessed to do and I want to use that gift and give it back to Jesus”.

The timing may have finally been right for the songstress to release a holiday project, but the coronavirus pandemic provided a unique challenge when it came to finishing the album. Thanks to technology, however, producer Greg Wells was able to be with Underwood in the studio via Zoom. Behind the scenes, video from the sessions show studio musicians and choral singers socially distant and wearing masks.

Fans will get a chance to experience the album another way this winter when HBO Max airs an exclusive holiday special. Underwood will appear with a live orchestra and choir, performing both traditional and original songs from the album. An air date for the special hasn’t been announced yet.

“Now more than ever we all need to focus on what Christmas is about,” says Underwood.  “Even though it has been a tough year, sometimes I feel like the greatest realizations can come in the worst times or in the most stressful times and it makes you more thankful for the things that you do have.”  Right now, we’re thankful for the new Carrie Underwood music!

Carrie Underwood Previews “Let There Be Peace” from Holiday Album

In a time of protests, riots and social injustice, country superstar and ACM Entertainer of the Year nominee, Carrie Underwood voices her one wish in the newly released, uplifting anthem, “Let There Be Peace”. The beautiful track is the first taste of her upcoming Christmas album, My Gift, dropping next month on September 25th.

Although Underwood mentions Christmas in the second verse, the references to prayer, Jesus, and the backing gospel choir in the song make it more closely resemble a Christian song at its core. Underwood states that if she had one wish this Christmas, it wouldn’t be for presents under the tree, it would be to stop the crying and fighting in every nation.

“Let there be peace / Peace to every nation / Let there be hope / For all the world to see / Let there be love and joy to all the children / Let there be peace on earth for you and me”

Underwood has put out Christmas songs in the past including “Do You Hear What I Hear?” “The First Noel,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “What Child Is This?” and “O Holy Night.” My Gift will feature eleven songs, including “Let There Be Peace,” “O Holy Night,” and nine other classic Christmas songs. John Legend will join Underwood for a rendition of “Hallelujah,” and her son, Isaiah will be featured on the fourth track, “Little Drummer Boy.”

A Decade of Great Country Christmas Albums

As the decade comes to a conclusion and our final Christmas of the decade brews, we rounded up our favorite country Christmas albums of the past 10 years.

Kacey Musgraves – A Very Kacey Christmas

Released on October 28th, 2016 as Musgraves’ first Christmas album, A Very Kacey Christmas was produced by Musgraves herself, Kyle Ryan and Misa Arriaga. Musgraves describes the album as “part western swing sprinkled with bits of classic pop, hazy Hawaiian moments and child-like fun that all comes to a nostalgic, melancholy end and ultimately is very ‘me,'” and adds, “There can be a touch of sad feelings and memories during the holiday season for a lot of people so I knew when I went in to write I wanted to include all the emotions this time of year can bring out.”

On November 29th, Musgraves released The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show on Amazon Prime.

Brett Eldredge – Glow

Glow is the third studio album by Brett Eldredge. It was released on October 28th, 2016 via Atlantic Nashville and hosts the likings of “big band” signature stylistics like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby on their Christmas records Eldredge grew up on. It debuted at No. 29 on Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Country Albums chart. Eldredge recently embarked on his annual Glow Tour beginning a two-night stay at the Ryman on Dec. 4th and will be making an appearance at the Beacon Theater December 17th and 18th.

Chris Young – It Must Be Christmas

It Must Be Christmas is Young’s sixth studio album and first Christmas album released via Columbia. Young co-wrote two of the album’s ten tracks and features the likes of Alan Jackson, Boyz II Men and Brad Paisley. The originals are “Under The Weather” and “It Must Be Christmas.” On Young’s favorite Christmas records, CMT, “All my favorite Christmas records have always had one or two originals on there,” he said. “So, the fact that these came this year in writing rooms and they’re both so different, is perfect timing. ‘It Must Be Christmas’ is very different in tone than ‘Under the Weather,’ but they compliment each other. But like I said, I’ve tried to write them before and for whatever reason, they haven’t come together until this year.”

Lady Antebellum – On This Winter’s Night

Released on October 22nd, 2012 via Capitol Records Nashville, this was Lady Antebellum’s fourth studio album. On December 13th, 2012, the album was certified Gold. Produced by Paul Worley, the album includes the six tracks previously released on their On This Winter’s Night EP.

Loretta Lynn – White Christmas Blue

Lynn recorded White Christmas Blue while tracking her album at the time Full Circle. It is her 44th studio album and second Christmas album since her first Christmas album released in 1966. Produced by Patsy Lynn Russell, Lynn’s daughter, and John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s son, the album was recorded at Cash Cabin Studios in Henderson, TN and released via Sony Legacy.

Blake Shelton – Cheers, It’s Christmas

Released on October 2nd, 2012 via Warner Bros. Nashville, the album features a number of special guests including Miranda Lambert, Pistol Annies composed of Lambert, Ashley Monroe, Angaleena Presley, Kelly Clarkson, 5th Place season 1 of NBC’s The Voice contestant Xenia and Shelton’s mother Dorothy Shackleford. A Christmas rendition of Michael Bublè’s “Home” is also featured with Bublè himself.

“Time For Me To Come Home,” the song was written with Shelton’s mother, Dorothy Shackleford, inspired The Hallmark Channel holiday film, “Time For Me To Come Home For Christmas.”

Jennifer Nettles – To Celebrate Christmas

Past ABC’s CMA Country Christmas TV host released her Christmas album on October 28th, 2016 via Big Machine Records. Produced by Julian Raymond, it was Nettles’ third studio album and her first holiday album. This marks Jennifer’s first holiday project solo after Sugarland’s holiday release Gold and Green.

LeAnn Rimes – Today is Christmas

Released on October 16th, 2015, this album features holiday classics and two original songs co-written by the singer. The star also is in a Hallmark movie called It’s Christmas, Eve. In addition to acting, Rimes contributed three original songs to the soundtrack, “The Gift of Your Love,” “It’s Christmas, Eve” and “You and Me and Christmas.”

Rimes is currently on her You and Me and Christmas Tour inspired by the third track written for her Hallmark film and her opening act is our Swag Session alum, Kalie Shorr.

Rascal Flatts – The Greatest Gift of All

The Greatest Gift of All, released October 21st, 2016, was produced by the trio themselves. Making the record even more special,  the three members young children sang on “Silent Night” making it even more sweet and personal.

“It probably seems crazy that we waited this long to release a Christmas record,” said Jay DeMarcus in a statement. “We just wanted to do it right! There are certain songs I think most everyone wants to hear during Christmas, and we wanted to put our own special spin on those songs while adding in a couple of our personal favorites. We had a blast making this album, and being in the producer’s chair ourselves, makes it extra fun and challenging for us.”

Scotty McCreery – Christmas With Scotty McCreery

Season 10 American Idol winner released his holiday album on October 16, 2012, which later was certified Gold on November 26, 2012. He self-described his favorite song as “Christmas In Heaven;” a song about his grandfather who died while he was getting ready for the album release.
