Kacey Musgraves: ‘Deeper Well’ – Album Review

Kacey Musgraves shares her fifth studio album, Deeper Well, out now, March 15th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new project here.

Kacey Musgraves has long been one of country’s – and forget just country, music’s – most influential songwriters of the 21st century. Her way of cutting straight to the bone of a lyric has rocked listeners’ worlds for over a decade, and her latest, Deeper Well, continues to weave universal storytelling with sonic ethereal magic.

The album’s opener, “Cardinal” is a wonderful opener for a variety of reasons. For one, it’s probably one of the funkier tracks, sounding like a cross between a 2000s Nelly Furtado hit and deep-cut off The Chicks’ Home. There are interesting rhythmic and tempo changes that occur by the time the listener gets to the bridge, and lyrically, it sets the tone for the entirety of the album: seeing signs in everything, falling in love, anxiety, growing up, and letting yourself make mistakes and learning from them.

Title track “Deeper Well” is the second song, and previously released “Too Good To Be True” is third, and while already lovely on its own, fit seamlessly into the story of the rest of the album. The threads of anxiety and falling are leaned into.

You can clearly hear the inspiration of everyone from Willie Nelson and John Prine to Nick Drake and Judee Sill on tracks like “Dinner With Friends” and “Giver/Taker”. Musgraves and her musical partners, Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian modulate on “Dinner With Friends” in this particularly interesting way that is reminiscent of the 70s more psychedelic folk like Drake and Sill, although lyrically it falls slightly short of that vibe. “Giver/Taker” is just generally fantastic, with the drums coming in on the second verse in that floaty, “Slow Burn” perfection way. There are a lot of metaphors to the outdoors on this album, but also, a lot to “the house” that Musgraves is in. “Moving Out” clearly follows that metaphor as well.

Transitions from one song into the next flow seamlessly together, another nod to the 60s and 70s songwriter influence, and this is really heard on a favorite, “Sway”. It’s floaty and gorgeous sonically, but also incredibly thoughtful. “Most of the time thoughts in my mind keep me running/Show me a place where I can just think of nothing”. It’s existential, but also a surrender to anxiety, with Musgraves sharing that “maybe one day I’ll learn how to sway”.

Perhaps the middle of the album gets a bit redundant lyrically – “Lonely Millionaire” and “Heart Of The Woods” are slightly forgettable – but every track is still truly stunning in the effortless sonic planet that Musgraves, Fitchuk and Tashian have created.

The only song written without Fitchuk and Tashian is “The Architect”, written with longtime, original collaborators Shane McNally and Josh Osborne. As usual, the three wrote a song that is like a masterclass in country storytelling. “Is it too late to make some more space?” Musgraves ponders throughout. Sonically, it could fit the bill of any Lilith Fair performer.

Deeper Well feels like a slightly more countrified Laurel Canyon project, and the wonderful closer, “Nothing To Be Scared Of” solidifies this. Musgraves successfully stripped back a layer of vulnerability when writing this album that resonates, and Deeper Well is already shaping up to be one of the musical highlights of 2024.

  1. Cardinal
  2. Deeper Well
  3. Too Good To Be True

Sam Barber Shares Brand New Song “Streetlight”

Sam Barber shares brand new song “Streetlight,” out now, March 14th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

There are many iterations of country music in the genre today. While all the styles have its place, country-folk is having its moment. With artists like Zach Bryan and Noah Kahn stating the straddling the line between country-folk and more modern sounds, Sam Barber is a perfect artist to add to that conversation. The incredible singer-songwriter shares his newest song today called “Streetlight.”

In what seems like overnight, Barber has amassed millions of loyal fans who are rather to carry him to superstardom. Much like its predecessors, “Streetlight” is an incredible and honest song that reads like a diary-entry. Barber pours his heart into the song, focusing on emotions and experiences that bring the song to life.

“And that the truth behind your eyes can speak as loud as your tongue // Girl, I don’t know if or when I’m coming back // But I felt the fire of a man who’s lost everything he has // And where does the sun go when you’re not around // I was fine when I left but I can’t stand this now // How many nights do I have alone // Bеfore I feel, before I feel wholе // Before I feel whole”

Barber is one to look out for this year. He breathes new life into country music, and we are excited to see what he has coming down the pipeline next.

RaeLynn Releases New Song “Funny Girl” Out Now

RaeLynn shares her brand new song, “Funny Girl” is out now, March 15th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

RaeLynn has had quite the journey in country music, but her steadfast honesty and commitment to authenticity may be one of the most intriguing things about her. The sassy singer has a knack for bringing real life into her songs. Today, she releases one of her most honest releases to date. “Funny Girl” is officially out now.

“Funny Girl” is a true story-telling song. Throughout the track, RaeLynn shares what it was like growing up as a the “funny girl,” rather than the popular girl. The song reads as a letter to the fellow “funny girls” who may relate to this song. While the entire song is impressive, the wordplay RaeLynn uses in the chorus is one of the most underrated parts of the song.

“Funny girl, how’ve you been? // I’ve been you, girl, since I was ten // Funny girl, keep cracking jokes // When shit gets real, that’s all you’ll know // The life of the party, tonight’s entertainment // A clear sky when the parade’s raining // Yeah, I know you’re mad at where you’re at // Gettin’ jealous of your friends // Ridin’ shotgun seat to the homecoming queen with a label on your back”

“Funny Girl” marks a new era of music for the songstress who is expected to release a full-length album later this year. Stay tuned!

who-is-twinnie

Who is Twinnie? The Story Behind Her Journey to Country Music

Who is Twinnie? The singer-songwriter joined us to chat about her journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

who-is-twinnie

Quick Facts:

Full Name – Twinnielee Moore
Birthdate – 5/14/1987
Hometown – York, United Kingdom
Current City – Nashville, Tennessee
Musical Influences – Billy Joel, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Gilbert O Sullivan
Current Single – “Take A Break”  // as of date of article: 3/12/24

The Beginning:

This week our spotlight shines on an artist who is making waves in country music, Twinnie. The singer-songwriter may be a Nashville-transplant, but she has found her voice in country music, as well as, made a name for herself in Music City.

Twinnie, born Twinnielee Moore grew up in York, England to a family who, while not musically-inclined, introduced her to a variety of music and genres at a young age. “I grew up kind of in two worlds. My mom was just kind of normal, and my dad was from a community of Romany travelers, so very early on, music was something I could escape to,” shared the singer.  “There was a lot of synergy between gypsies and travelers and the Nashville community in the way where they are all about family, it’s a very tight-knit community, they love music.”

For Twinnie, her parents and her grandparents introduced her to different genre of music growing up. “My grandparents were into old school country, the Rat Pack, Ella Fitzgerald, and my dad was into Billy Joel and rock bands. My mom was into Queen, ABBA, and so on,” she shared. Twinnie also recalls being enamored with the story-telling aspect of country music. “I have quite an eclectic taste when it comes to music. Also, I grew up on the stage since I was four years old.”

The Turning Point:

Twinnie’s career kickstarted long before her move to Nashville. The songstress grew up in the arts, honing her skills in singing, songwriting, and dancing at an early age. “I was a drama, music kid, did commercials, dancing. I’ve been a background dancer and singer,” she shared. Adding that she would take any gig to help fund her music career, something that she takes a lot of pride in.

Twinnie even wrote with The Shires before they became who they are in their respective musical lane. “I’ve literally done every job going in the music industry to enrich my music career,” said the singer. “The acting and being a dancer is where I give credit to my style of music and how I portray a song […]. My music, I tend to maintain a little pizzazz and that international thing.”

About a decade ago, Twinnie started coming to Nashville and recently officially made the move. “It took me a while to find the right people and stuff in Nashville. […] I think all of the other jobs that I had to do to get here kind of enrich me as an artist.”

Since working in Nashville,  Twinnie has released a handful of projects, including her debut album, Hollywood Gyspy and EPs, Better When I’m Drunk and Welcome to the Club, as well as, her newest project, Blue Hour (After Dark).

“I’m all about the storytelling. I love telling the truth. I love the way the hook lands. I was doing that instinctively before I moved to Nashville and I feel like it picked me unknowingly,” she shared. Adding, “I think it’s the music that dictates how you connect with an artist, and I’m really big on being myself in my music.”

Today:

Flash forward to today, Twinnie’s newest project, Blue Hour (After Dark) is officially out. The record features a collection of six songs that speak to heartbreak, healing, and everything in between.

“As far as ‘Blue Hour,’ I went through a really bad break-up, and blue hour happens twice a day, once just after the sun goes down, and one right before it comes up, and I thought it would be a really interesting way to show a break-up.” The record is  a good-bye to the man that she was in a relationship with for 10 years.

While “Blue Hour,” the song, showcases the heartbreak of it all, other songs on the project showcase different emotions. “‘The Way I Loved You’ is quite possibly my favorite song I have ever written. It celebrates a love, but it also grieves it at the same time. “Lonely Long” is very empowering, it’s like fuck you dude, I’m not going to be single forever, I’m going to be going out. “Just Like Earle’ was very musically kind of an ode to The Chicks.”

For Twinnie, the entire creative process for the record is something that she takes very seriously. The singer continues to create visuals and direct the videos for the music, as well as, takes ownership for other aspects of her artistry. Twinnie also made history as the first every Romany traveller to grace the Opry stage, singing music off this new project.

While Twinnie’s journey has been full of ups and downs, she remains authentic and honest in music and in life. “You never know what’s in front of you, and you should just trust and believe, and I feel like I’m in the right place,” she shared. Fans can expect more honesty and more wisdom in the second-half of her Blue Hour project in an EP called Blue Hour (After Dawn), coming down the pipeline soon.

Avery Anna Debuts New Song “Make It Look Easy”

Avery Anna’s new song, “Make It Look Easy” is out now, March 8th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

Back in 2022, we introduced fans to talented singer-songwriter, Avery Anna. Back then, she was promoting her EP Mood Swings, and showcasing her undeniable talent. Today, she is back with new music that feels distinctly her, as well as more grown up, and even better than before! Anna’s new song, “Make It Look Easy” is out now.

Anna’s more refined sound is evident on “Make It Look Easy.” The song has grit, pain, and emotion. The songstress finds a way to mesmerize listeners even after just one listen. While all of Anna’s previous releases have been great, “Make It Look Easy” feels like a level up for the young, blossoming singer.

“You should just leave me // Why would you stay // I’ll never be what you want anyway // To be brutally honest // I’m really conscious // Of every single thing you say // It hit me last night // You’re planning the goodbye // Do you think that I’m blind // I see it in your eyes // Your truck’s in the driveway // Your mind’s on the highway // Know you’re gonna leave me / And make it look easy”

Anna absolutely shines on this new release.

Chris Young Shares New Song “What She Sees In Me” Out Now

Chris Young shares new song, “What She Sees In Me,” out on all streaming platforms today, March 8th. Listen to the new music here and learn more.

We are right around the corner from the multi-platinum entertainer’s new record, Young, Love & Saturday Nights, out March 22, but with two weeks still to go, there’s still time to tease the project with one more track. “What She Sees In Me” is the most romantic one from the record thus far. Produced by Young and written with Christian Davis Stalnecker, Kyle Fishman, Ray Fulcher, and Josh Hoge, the ballad is told from the perspective of a humble man. He explains how lucky he is to have seen this woman go from being the girl next door to his forever person.

“I can see her faith when it gets tough // I can see her grace when I mess up // I can see how far she is out of my league // But I still can’t see what she sees in me // What she sees in me”

With a hefty 18 songs, Young Love & Saturday Nights is Young’s most ambitious project yet. He is a writer on fifteen tracks and is the sole producer on three. He shares co-producer credits with longtime creative partners, Chris DeStefano and Corey Crowder. Headlined by the rising top-30 title track, this is Young’s first album since 2021’s Famous Friends that produced two number-one radio hits. Other previously released songs include the boot-stomping “Double Down” and the tear-jerking “All Dogs Go To Heaven,” along with “Right Now” and “Looking For You.”

Early reviews of Young, Love & Saturday Nights are favorable, stating Young turns things up emotionally, sonically, and stylistically. The ballads hit harder, the rowdy tunes are more raucous, and the anthems hit new highs. “This is what this album felt like it needed to be for me,” he said in a recent press release. “It’s a little louder, a little more raw. Even the stripped-down songs are heavier. I love creating music and I love making it and the fact that I get to do that for a living is a pretty incredible thing.”
