NYCS Swag Spotlight: CJ Solar

CJ Solar

Baton Rouge, Louisana native CJ Solar is partly responsible for your obsession with Morgan Wallen‘s summer jam “Up Down”, writing that song over three years ago with Michael Hardy and Brad Clawson.  We caught up with the singer-songwriter recently about growing up in a musical family and his career leading up to his very first number one hit.

Solar started playing the guitar when he was eight years old, and his younger brothers followed in his footsteps, learning drums and bass.  They all grew up listening to the music that their parents loved, southern rock.  He recalls Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers, and Lynyrd Skynyrd being the first songs that they learned to play and really falling in love with those classic hits.  Going on a family vacation to Nashville when he was still in middle school, Solar remembers catching a show at the Grand Ole Opry and three of the performers were Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, and Dierks Bentley (back when Blake and Dierks still had mullets, he laughed). Watching Paisley shred on the guitar was an eye-opening experience for the young musician, and he quickly changed his thoughts about what country music was.  “Before that, I only knew country music to be sad songs about your dog dying, that’s what I pictured country music as, but when I got up there I saw these guys really rocking and Brad was shredding, I really saw the new kind of country music,” he explains.

All throughout high school he started learning about songwriting, and made his way to Nashville for college, attending Belmont University to get a degree in songwriting with a minor in music business.  He had the opportunity to intern at SeaGayle Music during his last semester and after showing them his original music, they signed him to a publishing deal before he even graduated college.  Fast forward almost 5 years, Solar has been one of their writers and pumping out songs for artists like Jerrod Niemann and Mike Ryan as well as releasing two EPs filled with a blend of southern rock and country music.

CJ Solar

Most recently, Solar had the opportunity to open for one of his all-time favorite bands, Lynyrd Skynyrd. He explains it was a dream come true and playing for those venues, packed with at least 20 thousand people each night was like magic, especially since their fans weren’t the typical country music fans he usually encounters. “A lot aren’t country music fans but they are music fans in general,” he says “People of all ages, it was great to see so many young fans come out too, then to see a surge in followers on social media, it takes a lot for them to look me up, follow me and comment how much they enjoyed my set,” he says.

When he writes, he blends the country lyric with a southern rock flair and says he is inspired by his influences and the music he loved growing up for that. His latest EP Get Away With It had its first single, “Airplane” hit number 15 on the Music Row charts, the highest an independent artist has charted within the last year.  He looks forward to releasing the next single from the project “American Girls” and take his own music to the next level.  Most recently, he enjoyed success with his very first number one cut, “Up Down” which was written with Michael Hardy and Brad Clawson and recorded by Morgan Wallen featuring Florida Georgia Line.  The single shot up the charts and currently has over 47 million streams on Spotify.  “Kudos to the whole Big Loud team, they fought for the number one because Blake [Shelton] was also going for number 1 that week. It’s a huge accomplishment and a testament to how hard they worked,” he tells us.

It’s pretty remarkable to think that while he was in middle school he attended a show at the Grand Ole Opry that changed his life forever, watching Blake Shelton on that coveted stage turned him on to country music and now a song he wrote was competing with one of Shelton’s songs for the top spot. “It’s so cool to play “Up Down” at our shows and it helps turn people on to the rest of my music, it’s really a blessing and I can’t believe it happened,” he humbling says.

Elaina Smith

NYCS Woman of the Month: Elaina D. Smith

Elaina Smith

You know her as one half of Nash Nights Live which is syndicated throughout all of the NASH stations throughout the country.  Along with Shawn Parr, Elaina D. Smith has been one half of Nash Nights Live since its inception.  In a recent interview with New York Country Swag, Smith explained how her journey to Nashville and to being behind the microphone of one of the countries most coveted radio shows has taught her so much.  Growing up in Southern California, she always had the ambition to follow her dreams, understanding that she would have to do whatever it takes to make them come true.

Country music was not a prominent genre in Southern California, but she recalls always having a true love for Dolly Parton.  From a young age, she knew she wanted to work in the entertainment industry, specifically a show like Entertainment Tonight.  “I always loved the entertainment industry, that’s always where my heart was, not necessarily being behind a mic or on the air, I just loved the hustle and bustle of everything that happens and the excitement of live shows,” she tells us. Networking through high school and her first couple of years in college at San Diego State University, she did land a job at Entertainment Tonight, but quickly realized  that that side of the industry was not for her. In order to pay for college, she took a job at a local radio station due to their ability to have her work flexible hours as a promotions assistant. After hosting events for the rock station, the program director asked her to audition for a morning show opening.  “I ended up sitting with the show for an hour and doing a mock show and I thought that was the most fun thing I’ve ever done in my life,” she explains.  “It was more in line with what I thought I wanted, I always knew I wanted to be in entertainment, I loved always working on the edge, that is what makes my adrenaline pump, it felt like a godsend that I got the opportunity to try it.”  She recalls this was a right time, right place situation and she was so lucky to have the opportunity to work for that station throughout college.

After moving to Florida for a job opportunity with Cumulus, a mere ten months later, she got a call from them regarding starting a country Nash Brand and a syndicated night show out of Nashville.  Her roommates at the time were always playing country music and she started to fall in love with the genre. Going from a small pop station in Florida to a national radio station was huge for Smith who says “I was freaking out that I was going to be on in New York, it was the most exciting thing to me to be on in New York and it still is.”  She loves living in Nashville and although she misses her family she is happy that she currently resides in a place that people love to visit. She stays connected with her family through technology, even having FaceTime wine dates with her mom.

Nash Nights Live Hosts Elaina D. Smith and Shawn Parr with NYCountry Swag's Stephanie Wagner and Christina Bosch

Nash Nights Live Hosts Elaina D. Smith and Shawn Parr with NYCountry Swag’s Stephanie Wagner and Christina Bosch

She loves how fast-paced Nash Nights Live is and how they consistently bring artists and unique content to country music lovers around the country. She tells us that her favorite artist to interview is Reba.  “She is such a good person and in all of her interviews she just always know how to give a great answer, how to engage, and how to make sure she is giving her fans something unique,” she tells us.  This past April, Smith was honored to be the very first female announcer for the ACM Awards, which she co-announced with Shawn Parr. She recalls getting a text message weeks after her audition while she was sitting in the movie theatre that said “Welcome to the ACM Family, Congratulations” where she proceeded to freak out and bother everyone else in the theatre she laughed.  She explains how the actual experience was surreal, being a fan of award shows her entire life she was so thrilled to get to partake in the show and see everything that went on behind the scenes.

Her most recent endeavor, ‘Women Want to Hear Women’  is a podcast and feature that highlights a different female artist each week. “The title stemmed from a phrase that I have been hearing for years as a female disc jockey that “women don’t want to hear women” and I hear it from older white males all of the time,” she tells us.  “They were telling me, a woman, that I don’t want to hear women. I am telling you I am a woman and I do want to hear women. I wanted to start reclaiming that narrative.”  This is her opportunity to feature women, allow them to sit down and talk about the struggles they have endured and then to play their music and have them cover another female artist to create a sisterhood. She excitedly explains that it’s been a long time coming but being able to highlight these women is something she is so proud of and that her team at Nash Nights Live has been so supportive.

When discussing what advice she has for young women wanting to pursue their dreams of working in the music industry she says “Just be open to everything. Be open to any opportunity that is there, being a female in country radio and country music, there are very few spots and it is very intimidating. Find your path to get there, your story is how you become who you are.”  A common thread among each of our Woman of the Month features is that they all say to find your network of women to lift you up.  “That is what is going to be priceless in the end, is having the support of other women and being able to share your experience and figure out together how to navigate this industry,” Smith says.

Tristan Jackson

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Tristan Jackson

Tristan Jackson

Tristan Jackson has taken winding rounds to end up where he is now, living in Nashville and pursuing a solo career in music.  Growing up, he and his mother moved around a lot but he tends to call Branson his hometown.  Eventually, Jackson made his way to Los Angeles where he focused on his film and music career simultaneously.  “I was trying to utilize acting to pay for music, landing a small part seemed to be easy, I had a better opportunity getting acting gigs, so I could then put that towards my musical endeavors,” he explains in a recent phone interview.

Growing up in the Midwest, he grew up listening to traditional country music, explaining that his late grandfather was a real cowboy. “My idol is my grandfather, he is a true country guy, a cattle rancher, he played country guitar, he taught me my word is my bond and integrity, he is my hero,” he thoughtfully expresses.  While country remained in his blood, he started a band and was the lead vocalist for The Cavalry in which incorporated his favorite types of music, southern rock, pop, R&B, and country. “I ended up in Nashville and I had the opportunity to write with and work with Nashville writers and artists, I had such a profound respect for Nashville.” he tells us “I started cultivating a new genre that I coined “Nashville Rock” which is a hybrid of pop-rock, country and where the new country style is going but at the same time trying to stay true to my roots to country music in rhythm and blues.”

Now focusing his energy on writing in Nashville he is venturing out on his own as a solo artist.  His first single “Wake Up Call” definitely still has an underlying southern rock vibe but with the addition of Jackson’s fiance, Kirstie Lane, the lyric and delivery allow the country fans to really dive in.  Throughout our conversation Jackson discusses artists from all different genres including Taylor Swift, Post Malone and even Jared Leto from 30 Seconds to Mars, explaining how they have each influenced him and how he doesn’t want to put himself into a box of a genre.  “I love that artists are branching out in different directions now, they aren’t doing it for the money they are doing it because they love certain types of music.  I love adding different elements to my music,” he tells us.  “When I leave this world I want to make sure I leave it the way I want to, as far as my music goes, I want my kids to say ‘That was my dad’.”  Relating genres back to movies, something Jackson is familar with since spending nine years in LA, he talks about why people feel they have to pick a favorite genre of music or why artists must define themselves in that way.  “Actors pick different roles all of the time, people decide to watch a comedy one day and a drama the next, I don’t believe in genres.”

“If you work hard for it, anything is possible, that’s the mindset I try to stay in,” he says of committing to his dreams and pursuing his career.  His debut EP is slated for release later this Fall and he looks forward to sharing his journey through his music.  Listen to his latest single “When the Radio’s Gone” below and follow Tristan Jackson on his social media channels (Instagram, Twitter,  and Facebook,) to keep up with his album release date.

The Wild Feathers

The Wild Feathers Album Celebration Showcase In NYC

The Wild Feathers

Although The Wild Feathers may be new to country radio and country music fans, the band has been around since 2010, and just released their third studio album, Greetings From the Neon Frontier everywhere music is available.  Last night, Ricky Young, Joel King, Taylor Burns, and Ben Dumas who make up the band, played a show at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall in celebration of their latest project, playing the album in its entirety in order. These modern-day cowboys took the stage with their guitars and represented not only country music but blending soul with pop-rock as well. Think The Eagles meets Green Day meets Brothers Osborne.

The band has three lead singers that alternate and share the spotlight for each song, which gives the album a versatile sound while keeping the bands vibe cohesive.  Their singles “Big Sky” and “Stand By You” have been spinning on Sirius XM The Highway for a few months and the band played The Today Show yesterday morning with Kathie Lee and Hoda. You can check out their performance by clicking here.

During the show last night The Wild Feathers performed, showing off their incredible ability to captivate the crowd and convey their musical stylings.  Head to our Instagram to check out exclusive videos of their set and listen to their full album below.

Chris Lane Laps Around the Sun

NYCS First Impression: Chris Lane ‘Laps Around the Sun’

Chris Lane Laps Around the Sun

Chris Lane’s sophomore album Laps Around the Sun, available everywhere today feature fourteen tracks written by some of Nashville’s top writers including Rhett Akins, Busbee, Rodney Clawson as well as Brian Kelley from Florida Georgia Line and Ryan Hurd. His debut album Girl Problems secured Lane his spot in the country world with hits such as “Fix” and “For Her”, which were both certified gold. This project is filled with Lane’s signature pop-country blend which lends perfectly to his live show.  We caught him most recently playing Nash FM 94.7’s Summer Shindig where he engaged fans by playing his hits and covering some classic country tunes.

With the summer in full swing, Laps Around the Sun is being released at the perfect time.  Three songs that stand out to add to your go-to summer soundtrack are the title track, “Fishing” and “Sun Kiss You”.  Picking songs to record for his second album, he feels like he has found out in the process the kind of artist he wants to be.  “I’ve learned a lot,” Lane tells Billboard, “With my first record, I was trying to figure out exactly what kind of sound I wanted to have, and now I know. I know what I truly love and what kind of artist I want to be. My goal was to make sure anyone who hears this album finds a song they can relate to. I hope I accomplished that.”

The album features two duets with female artists, his smash hit “Take Back Home Girl” with Tori Kelley and “Without You” with Danielle Bradbery. The former is climbing up the country radio charts and has quickly become a favorite during his live set.  Fans are familiar with two of the tracks, “Old Flame” and “All the Right Problems” which were featured on his latest EP and Lane has been playing in his live shows as well.

The North Carolina native channeled his childhood influences on this record including Kenny Chesney. The quintessential summer album mixes country with beer, sunshine, and boats, something Lane does well to represent on all of the feel-good tracks.  The album closes with “Hero” a ballad that takes a more serious note but just happens to be the perfect way to end the project, showing Lane’s undeniable growth over the past few years as an artist and an entertainer.

#TBT 5 Things We Know & Love About Eric Church

Eric Church is back with brand new music, let’s take a look back at five times we loved him for his artistry, his dedication to his fans, and his love for creating incredible music.

5. The First Number 1 –

It took Church three albums to finally have a number one single on the radio, but with his album Chief debuting at number one on both the Top Country Albums and the Billboard 200 charts, you knew this album was different.  Both “Drink In My Hand” and “Springsteen” hit the top spot on the charts and have gone on to be staples in his live shows.

4. That Time He Dropped A Surprise Album –

His latest album, Mr. Misunderstood, came as a complete surprise to fans back in 2015.  Members of his fan club, The Church Choir received a vinyl copy of the record on November 3rd, a day before it was available on digital outlets and in stores. With no promotion or advertisements surrounding the release, Church performed the title track during his performance on the CMA Awards the following evening, needless to say, the world was excited about Church’s surprise.

3. Why Not Me –

Just days after the country and the music industry were completely devastated by the mass shooting at Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Church unwillingly took the stage at the Grand Ole Opry.  In the video below, he not only breaks down in tears describing those incredible fans that he had the pleasure of playing for just two nights before but also went on to state “Those were my people, those were my fans.” He dedicated his performance to Heather Melton, who’s husband Sonny was one of the victims, they were supposed to be at the show that night.  He goes on to explain that something broke in him that night and the only way he has ever fixed anything that was broken was through music, playing a song he had just written called “Why Not Me”.

2. Fans First –

As more and more fans started wanting tickets to his shows, Church and his team realized that ticket scalping was a real problem for dedicated fans who were trying to buy tickets as soon as they went on sale.  Church told The Associated Press he’s going to do everything he can do to stop what he calls a criminal organization that’s making millions.  “They buy thousands of tickets across the U.S., not just mine, and they end up making a fortune,” Church said in an interview. “They use fake credit cards, fake IDs. All of this is fraud.”  So in order to do his part, he canceled over 25 thousand tickets that he believed were purchased by scalpers to make money and rereleased them to his true fans.

1. Church In New York –

The last time Eric Church played in New York, our team knew we had to do something big.  His “Holdin’ My Own” Tour hit the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY on Friday, January 27th of 2017 and we decided to go all out.  We hosted a VIP Suite Experience for lucky winners and New York City country fans.  36 fans including our team got to experience the sold-out show from a private suite. The concert was one to remember, Church played 38 songs spanning over a three-hour set.

We are loving his brand new single “Desperate Man” and look forward to his new album October 5th. Sign up for our Weekly Round-Up newsletter to be informed first about new music and upcoming events and giveaways.

Back to Us Tour

Rascal Flatts Brings the ‘Back to Us Tour’ to Jones Beach

Each summer, country music fans from New York City and Long Island gather to enjoy their favorite music on the water at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater. The Back to Us Tour was the first country show to make its way to the beloved venue Friday night featuring Carly Pearce, Dan + Shay and Rascal Flatts.

Back to Us Tour

The pit section filled early, fans singing along to Carly Pearce’s set which was filled with songs from her debut album. “I feel like the luckiest girl in the entire world that I get to welcome y’all to the Back to Us Tour,” Pearce told the crowd.  Her set included “Careless”, “If My Name Was Whiskey” and of course her first number one single “Every Little Thing”.  She closed with her current radio single “Hide the Wine” after thanking country music fans and country radio for changing her life.

Back to Us Tour

Next up on the Back to Us tour was Dan + Shay, a duo who is already having one heck of a summer.  With their latest single “Tequila” going number one the week prior and the release of their incredible self-titled album just a few weeks ago, the boys were pumped to play for New York fans.  Not only did they perform songs from their new album including “Alone Together” and “All to My Self”  but they took fans back to their very first single “19 You and Me”.  Their harmonies and energy had the entire theater on their feet, swaying to the music and singing along.

Back to Us Tour

Just as the sun was setting and creating the most miraculous cotton candy colored sky, the duo stopped to chat with the crowd.  “Huge shout out to our country radio family here, we’ve got something to celebrate here with you tonight Jones Beach, we have the number one song in the country right now!” they exclaimed.  “Let’s sing it together”.  Head to our Instagram to catch one of the best moments of the night when the audience sang along to “Tequila”. Continuing their incredible set, they covered Justin Timberlake’s smash “Can’t Stop The Feeling” which started a giant dance party in the venue.

Back to Us Tour

Headliners Rascal Flatts have been touring together, as a band, for almost two decades, perfecting their live show and giving their longtime fans a show full of their hits and their incredible harmonies.  They released their latest album Back to Us last year and are traveling the country this summer promoting the new music as well as playing classic hits from their previous records.  Mixing classic Flatts songs like “Feels Like Today”  with more current hits like “Yours If You Want It” the packed venue danced along, feeling nostalgic as well as invigorated from the trio’s set.  “I look out at our crowds every night and I see everybody from all different walks of life, united under one thing and that is country music,” band member Jay Demarcus stated in between songs. “This is still the greatest country to live in on the face of the planet, so let’s have a party tonight, let’s escape for the next hour.”

Back to Us Tour

A highlight of the night was when Dan + Shay and Carly Pearce came back to the stage to join Gary, Jay and Joe Don to perform “Hopin’ You Were Lookin'” from Back to Us as well as Maren Morris, Zedd and Grey’s smash crossover hit “The Middle” and then their  throwback hit “Here’s To You”.  Closing out the night with “Bless the Broken Road” and “Life is a Highway” the Back to Us Tour was certainly one to remember as the first country show of the summer at Jones Beach.

Brandon Stansell

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Brandon Stansell

Brandon Stansell

For Brandon Stansell, his love of country music collides with his passion for advocacy for the LGBT community, being open with his fans about his journey and using his music to connect.  Growing up right outside of Chattanooga, Tennesee, Stansell recalls his entire family listening to country music.  At the age of six, his mother and sister surprised him with tickets to see Reba McEntire, a night that he says changed everything.  “It was one of the first shows I ever saw, it was one of those moments where I was like ‘Yup, this is what I want to do’.”  Shortly after that, his parents brought him to Nashville and he was one of the children who performed at Opryland.  It’s where he cut his teeth as a performer, learning to sing and dance and spent his childhood around very talented people who all loved country music.  “I was six when I did my first show, it was on the Opry stage so I joke about telling people that my first paid gig was at the Opry house then I’ve spent the rest of my adult life just clawing and scraping to get back to that circle,” he laughs.

Graduating Belmont University in Nashville in 2009, he pursued his music career in Nashville for a few years, but never quite felt like he found his voice.  After a brief stint in New York City, he moved out to the West Coast where he now resides.  It took him leaving Nashville and experiencing the hustle and bustle of New York City to finally start writing his own music and find his songwriter’s voice.

As a songwriter, he has decided that writing about what is going on in his life, or things that are personal to him has really allowed him to come into his own and hone his craft. “I have a strict philosophy that you have to write what you know and up until now, it’s been working for me.”  His most recent single, “Slow Down” features Ty Herndon, an artist that Stansell lived next to in Nashville and became friends with. “I grew up listening to him, he just has one of those quintessential country voices and he definitely made my record better and I am really proud to have him on there, it was one of those unforgettable moments,” he recalls.
Brandon Stansell

A big part of Stansell’s personal journey is his coming out story, which he explains to us as something he always is sure to talk about during his live shows.  “It was actually really painful and difficult and it didn’t go as well as I had hoped, but fast forward a decade from there those experiences have really shaped me into the person that I am and that’s a person that I am deeply proud of,” he tells us.  “I just don’t know that I would be the person or be doing what I am doing now if I didn’t have to go through what I went through to get me here.”  Blending artistry and advocacy is what he strives to do with his career, participating in festivals across the country and even playing at the Concert for Love and Acceptance hosted by CMT’s Cody Alan earlier this summer during CMAfest.

I feel like music has been for me, as an independent artist, has been a vehicle where I’ve been able to talk to people especially in the south that I was in years ago, that are having struggles and I have been able to connect with them,” he explains.  “In those exchanges I feel that there is a sentiment that we are not that alone even though we may feel it at times, and it’s an easy thing to feel when you are LGBT in the South and have a conservative or religious family that doesn’t understand you or support you and can’t find a way around their religion to love you in the place where you are.”  Using his platform he is proud to talk about his experiences and to try and help others going through similar things.

His next single, “For You” is available now, take a listen below and be sure to follow Brandon on social media, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
