NYCS First Impression: Adam Wakefield ‘Gods & Ghosts’

Adam Wakefield

Adam Wakefield’s anticipated album Gods & Ghosts was released this past Friday. The Voice season 10 contestant has put varied tracks together that represent his roots. It has a mix of bluegrass, rock n’ roll, and soulful melodies that show it’s coming from the heart.

Wakefield decided to come to Nashville and try his luck in the music business. He and his girlfriend drove down in their van. Starting a bluegrass group when he arrived in Nashville, he started writing more and more. Thankfully an opportunity came about when a scout for The Voice heard him play at Soulshine Pizza and then invited him to audition. Making it to the finals of Season 10, America only had a small taste of what Wakefield was capable of.

This album has proven Wakefield’s vocal ability and songwriting that shows a personal and embracing point of view. Starting out with a track that stood out the most was “Cheap Whiskey & Bad Cocaine” because of the lyrics: “I ain’t ever been on the radio, barely got a dime to my name. Never walked down no red carpet, never had my 15 minutes of fame. But I know in my heart I could be a star.” It’s a classic country song showcasing his humble roots. Followed by the album title track “Gods & Ghosts” that perfectly ties the album together. It’s a love song that shows his intimate yet vulnerable side.  In “Good Morning Sunday”, Wakefield’s vocal performance showcases a vibrant, warm feeling while the lyrics allow the listener to always hope for better days.

All of these tracks on the album show his poetic songwriting ability of what it means to be an artist. You can listen to Gods & Ghosts everywhere today, make sure to give it a listen below.

Kelsea Ballerini reunited with her friends, EDM-pop duo The Chainsmokers at one of the biggest events of the season last night, the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Held right here in New York City, the trio were among five other musical acts including Shawn Mendes, Bebe Rexha, Halsey, Rita Ora, and The Struts.

They performed their smash hit “This Feeling” throughout the Golden Angel segment of the show, which featured supermodels Candice Swanepoel, Stella Maxwell, Barbara Palvin and more strutting down the iconic runway. Ballerini is the first country artist to hit Victoria’s Secret runway since Taylor Swift was booked as one of the musical acts in 2013.

Ballerini blended right in with the Angels, rocking a stunning gold sparkling mini dress which showed off her toned legs. Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers also sported gold and black embellished suits to go along with the theme. Taggart and Ballerini belted out their upbeat tune while harmonizing beautifully during the song’s bridge and chorus, up and down the gold sparkling runway while Pall was in control of the instrumentals. The two had some fun dancing with the Angels as they strutted down the catwalk. A few of the other supermodels were also shown jamming out backstage.

Walker Hayes Premieres New Music Video for “Craig”

Back in April, we introduced you to rising country star Walker Hayes’ exceptional song, “Craig,” in our Live Swag Session interview with the artist. Then, in May, the entertainer shared his thank you letter to the infamous Craig, who he deemed as an influential and important person in his life.

The track, off Hayes’ debut album Boom, was inspired by a man the singer met at Church, during a difficult time in his family’s life. Without question or ridicule, Craig stepped in to help, and gifted the family of eight, a mini-van. This unparalleled act of kindness ultimately propelled the the singer-songwriter to write, record, and release the song as a thank you.

Fittingly, Hayes premiered a music video, that paints the picture of the lyrics in “Craig” perfectly, on none other, than ‘Giving Tuesday’ (November 27th). The simplistic video, filmed in black and white, showcases the singer playing piano, as stick figure animations mimic the special message of the heartfelt, story-telling lyrics. The song and the video may not get the radio time or award nominations it deserves, but the honesty and the kindness that it displays is unmatched. Check out the tune and the music video below.

More importantly, Hayes made sure to link his organization, “Be A Craig Fund,” encouraging fans to appreciate and partake in acts of kindness, and ultimately, pay it forward, as Craig did. Click here to donate or buy a “Be A Craig” t-shirt to support the cause.

Next up, Hayes embarks on his three month headlining tour, beginning on January 31st in Texas. The ‘Dream On It Tour’ was named by one of the singer’s fans in a contest he held via his Instagram. The show does not hit the New York area this time around, but keep checking our calendars for any updates. Visit walkerhayes.com for more information about his tour, organization, and more.

LANCO & Travis Denning Bring ‘Hallelujah Nights Tour’ to New York City

New York country fans braced the cold weather Thursday (Nov. 29) to head to Irving Plaza for LANCO’s, ‘Hallelujah Nights Tour’. Country newcomer, Travis Denning, was tasked with warming up the crowd as the evenings opening act.

Just before his set, Denning joined NYCountry Swag for a LIVE Swag Session, performing two of his songs live on Facebook for our followers and taking the time to chat about what’s next for the rising artist. Check out the full performance in the video above. Kicking off the Irving Plaza show, Denning’s set did not disappoint. He had a packed room of fans entertained by his musical ability, catchy songs, and stage presence from the first note. After singing his unreleased track, “Heartbeat of a Small Town” potentially from his forthcoming debut album, the singer-songwriter energetically addressed the crowd. “New York City, how the hell are you?! My name is Travis, and it’s damn good to back here with you people,” the artist exclaimed as fans erupted into applause.

Denning went on to sing a few other songs, including another unreleased track, “Good Years” and a cover of Miranda Lambert’s “Kerosene”. Just before leading into his recently released song, “Red, White and Blue”, the singer shared his inspiration for the tune and showed his support for the military men and women, while also acknowledging his Georgia roots, where he shared that he was proud to live near an air force base.

Arguably one of the best moments from Denning’s set was his performance of his top 40 debut single, “David Ashley Parker from Powder Springs”. Fans seemed to know the track, as they sang back the words to the singer, throughout the entire song. This is always a memorable moment, where the artist makes a connection with the audience and turns the crowd into fans, if they weren’t already. Denning ended his opening gig showing much gratitude for the engaged crowd.

Shortly following Denning’s set, Katie Neal and Jesse Addy from Nash FM 94.7 gave the boys of LANCO a warm welcome to the stage. The group sang songs off their debut album, Hallelujah Nights, as well as performed an epic mashup of covers. Their approximately 90-minute performance began with songs like “We Do,” “Win You Over,” and “Pick You Up.” The crowd was soaking in every word, as lead singer, Brandon Lancaster poured his heart out on stage, even swaying their arms back and forth, during “So Long (I Do).”

LANCO really got the party going, when they covered The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside,” getting the audience involved, “There’s a lot of words in this one, so y’all help us sing ‘em.” The crowd obliged, singing along through the entire high energy song. Lancaster explained how the band ended up including this song in their setlist, talking about their humble beginnings, playing at college bars.

“Playing for free, honestly playing for free beer and that’s about it, but that means something though. It means your boys over hear play Mr. Brightside, but ya’ll we know how to honky tonk a little bit alright, so uh, so I know we’re in New York City, but you seem to like country music, so I thought it would be fun to… Can we turn Irving Plaza into a honky tonk for a second, alright?!.”

Immediately following, LANCO joined the crowd on the floor for some entertaining and chilling covers, including country superstar, Eric Church’s “Drink in My Hand” and “Springsteen,” as well as Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.” LANCO’s connection with the fans was truly evident in this moment, making it a highlight of the night as captured in our Instagram video seen below.

Finally, after playing a couple of other songs off their record, such as, “Middle of Night,” the group said goodnight to fans and left the stage, only to come back for an awesome encore performance of their greatest hits, “Born to Love You,” and “Greatest Love Story.” Lancaster made sure to share his inspiration for the former.

“I found no matter where you go, wherever you’re from, whatever you’re born into… A big city like New York, somewhere a few hours from here, maybe you drove in… No matter what country you’re born into, whatever circumstance you’re born into, it doesn’t matter. If you ever get to find someone to go through life with- to go through the good, the bad, the ugly, the ups, the downs, you’ll find no matter what you’re born into- you were born to love them, so this next song is called ‘Born to Love You’.”

Both LANCO and Travis Denning truly gave New Yorker’s an unforgettable night of music. They will continue playing shows on the ‘Hallelujah Nights Tour’ through the rest of the year and part of 2019. Head to lancomusic.com for more information.

Friday morning (Nov 30.), Country superstar Garth Brooks made an appearance on Live with Kelly & Ryan. Brooks chatted with the morning hosts about Christmas plans, performing, and his historic show at Notre Dame.

Brooks told the duo that he was looking forward to finally being able to celebrate Christmas with his wife, Trisha Yearwood, in the house they’ve built. Explaining that had been so busy touring, performing over 390 shows over the past three years that they weren’t able to spend much time in their home. Brooks added, “We actually saw fewer cities than we did in the 90s, it took about 70-something cities to 6 million tickets, it was unbelievable.”

Hosts, Kelly Ripa & Ryan Seacrest asked Brooks if touring with Yearwood has brought the two closer together or if they need time apart. To which Brooks sweetly replied, “she might, but for me, I can’t spend enough time with that woman.” Seacrest asked if they pull any pranks on each other on the road, he replied “Here’s a great one, if it’s your birthday on the road you’re getting a pie in the face, doesn’t matter who you are. Last year we pied Trisha for her birthday and thank God she laughed.”

Seacrest also asked Brooks “What, for you, is the greatest part about being there up on stage and performing? “I know this is totally crazy and a total opposite way to think, but I travel so many miles to hear them sing,” Brooks said of his fans. “That’s it, I’m not singing at all,” he sarcastically added. He also spoke about his Notre Dame Stadium concert and talked about how much he has always wanted to play there. Brooks said, “In college, Joe Montana was my guy. I had green and gold all over my wall.”

Check out clips from the Live with Kelly & Ryan episode here and don’t miss ‘Garth: Live at Notre Dame’ which airs on CBS this Sunday (Dec. 2) at 8:00 p.m. ET. Brett Young Releases Song “Catch” & Acoustic Video

Fans have been eagerly anticipating the next album from breakout star, Brett Young and the wait is almost over. As we gear up for the release of Ticket to L.A., which drops December 7th, the singer unveiled a new song from the forthcoming record, “Catch”, accompanied by a video of an acoustic performance of the song.

NYCountry Swag first heard “Catch” back in September, seen in the post above, when the singer teased new music at Nash FM 94.7’s Hackensack Meridian Health Stage 17 in New York City, during a special Up Close & Country recording with the entertainer. According to a recent press release, Young shared, “‘Catch’ is about that person, who comes along when you least expect it and completely changes all your plans. I think most of us have felt that way at some point – being so captivated by someone that nothing else seems to matter, so I hope fans can really connect with this one.” The track features catchy lyrics with a fresh take on the singer’s signature sound that fans know so well, due to the mega-success with his debut album.

For the stripped down performance of the song in partnership with Vevo, Young sung the heartfelt lyrics, while a guitarist provided some acoustic guitar in the background. The song takes on a different feel than the melody of the recorded track, seemingly more like some of the singer’s hit love songs like “In Case You Didn’t Know”. As usual, Young’s style shines through in both the recorded and acoustic version of “Catch.” Check out the performance below.

New Yorkers, who want to ‘catch’ a live performance of this song and sure to be others off the new record, can purchase tickets for the special ‘CMT on Tour Presents: Brett Young’ concert heading to New York City’s PlayStation Theater on Sunday, December 9th. Special guests Tyler Rich and Rachel Wammack will also be performing as openers for Young. Make sure you are following @NYCountrySwag on Instagram for snaps from the night.

Take a listen to ‘Catch’ below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS First Impression: Tucker Beathard ‘Nobody’s Everything’

“Sometimes following your heart means not knowing where you’re going, how you’re going to get there, who’s going with you, when it’ll pay off or when it’ll make sense as to why you followed it in the first place.” This is the sentiment expressed by country singer-songwriter Tucker Beathard today via his Twitter, about his journey to album release day. After a less than easy journey to “make it” in country music, his debut album, Nobody’s Everything is finally available. The record is truly one of a kind and an inside look into Beathard’s feelings and growth as not only an artist and musician, but as a human being.

The first half of a two part album was released today which features nine tracks, including “Leave Me Alone”, which the singer dropped a music video for earlier in this week. The second part of the LP is slated to drop early 2019, with nine more songs to look forward to. Beathard depicts the independent album as authentic to who he is, which one can attribute to the project’s refreshing sound, story-telling lyrics, and overall vibe.

The record is the entertainer’s unapologetic take on the events he has experienced in his life, beginning with the first track entitled “Ride On”. The song encourages listeners to keep the past in the past and continue to “Ride On” to one’s soul’s journey. Co-written by Beathard, it is easy to see how his experiencing becoming an independent artist inspired the lyrics: “I always act like I don’t care / When the black tops go nowhere / Keep my head down, tough it out, don’t think about how life ain’t fair / And Ride On”.

With a similar lyrical vibe of “Leave Me Alone,” a therapeutic and emotive track about wanting closure, “Hate It” is another heartbreaking song, where the singer tries to work through feelings of still wanting a broken relationship. The song is another example of a track, where Beathard pours his heart out, singing some of the most honest lyrics that can be written. “I just don’t want to see you with anyone, but me / Now I can barely breathe, drowning in my jealousy/ I know, I never been the kind to leave my heart out on the line / it’s too damn hard to fake it and keep saying that I’m fine / I hate it / I still love you and I hate it”

Keeping with the theme of honesty, “This Life” follows “Hate It,” as the second to last song on the record. Beathard premiered a music video for the vulnerable track with Billboard today. Check out the video above. Although the song can be about a lot of different circumstances, for the singer, his inspiration stemmed from being a teenager in the music industry, who was susceptible to “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll”. This song is real, raw, and emotional, exactly what country music is all about.

Finally, Beathard closes the record out with the heartfelt, “How Gone Will I Go”. The beautiful notion about this track is that it can be applied to some many facets of life and, depending what a person’s going through, it can evoke a different type of message and emotion for each person. “I’ll be back, sure goes with denial / It’s so easy to say, to tell me why I ain’t so / How gone will I go? (3x) / Tell me I ain’t that gone”

Overall, Nobody’s Everything may be one the most honest and raw albums that have been released this year. Beathard’s musical ability and songwriting talent, far surpasses that of any former released songs by the artist. He has entered a different realm of artistry, that we can only hope will continue, during ‘Part 2’ of the record. Follow Beathard’s journey on social media and head to tuckerbeathard.com for future tour information.

Nobody’s Everything is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Country Superstar Garth Brooks Takes On Late Night Television

Garth Brooks on Late Night with Stephen Colbert

Garth Brooks appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night (Nov. 29) to talk about everything from his javelin-throwing college days, taking a break from country music, and his mutual love for Lady Gaga.

Being in the music business, Brooks knows what life on the road is like. Touching on how perfectly Bradley Cooper had cast and directed the hit movie “A Star Is Born” and Lady Gaga’s amazing performance, Brooks also acknowledges that the movie as real life in country music. Everything from being on the road to people backstage, he claims was depicted perfectly. If someone wanted to go see what entertainment is like, Brooks says “that movie is one of them where I would say go see it and you will get a good dose of it.”

The television host, Stephen Colbert asked what it takes to build a country megastar and Brooks laughed and said music was not the plan in college. Instead, he admitted he had a track and field career at Oklahoma State University and explained how being a professional athlete was always the dream. He threw the javelin and was generally happy being at the same school as his brother, someone he calls his hero.

After walking at graduation, Brooks came to find out he was an hour short of being able to actually get his degree. With the track scholarship gone, he set out to a bar in town to try and play a show to earn money to pay for the rest of college. One night turned into two, two into Monday-Friday, and the rest is history for the country megastar.

In 1998, Brooks took a break from his country music career to help raise his family, a time in his life where he said he learned more than ever. After coming back from a 16-year break, Brooks acknowledged that the biggest change in the music industry that he saw was how people consumed music. From 8 track tapes to streaming the music landscape had changed drastically. That was not going to stop him from putting out the music he loves and the way he wanted to. Brooks believes that album cuts are the most important thing and can save someone’s life, as did his.

Of course, the show could not end without mentioning the history Brooks just made: becoming the first person to ever play a concert inside of Notre Dame Stadium. The entire show was recorded so that fans around the world can enjoy the show. ‘Garth: Live at Notre Dame’ is set to air on CBS Sunday (Dec. 2) at 8:00 p.m. ET and country fans will not want to miss it. Brooks continued to tell Colbert and the audience that he is very excited for his special to come out and claims viewers will laugh and cry, but what is going to steal your heart is the crowd. It was below freezing temperature the night of the concert, but every person was still up on their feet and singing every word to every song.

Each week since the big concert, Brooks has released more and more stadium tour dates around the country for 2019. The shows will continue for the next three years. Check out the full episode of Garth Brooks on Late Night with Stephen Colbert here. For more Garth Brooks news, check out our recap of his special Q+A with iHeartRadio in NYC including an intimate moment our NYCountry Swag Managing Editor shared with the superstar.

To catch Brooks on the road, stay up-to-date on everything at his website garthbrooks.com.

Last night, NBC kicked off the most wonderful time of the year with the annual lighting of New York City’s famous tree on the “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” holiday special. Every year, thousands of people travel from all over to watch this one of a kind occasion that takes over New York City. This year was no different with the thousands of spectators in Rockefeller Center, enjoying the night watching some of music’s biggest stars perform, while waiting in anticipation for the tree to be lit.

Before the primetime telecast started, there was a one-hour pre-show special to warm up the crowd for the holiday ceremony to come. Country stars Kellie Pickler, Brett Eldredge, and Martina McBride all appeared singing holiday favorites, getting everyone into the Christmas spirit.

Kicking off the pre-show was singer-songwriter, Kellie Pickler, taking the stage in a stunning red dress and black overcoat performing “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” giving the song a country twist. When it came time for the two-hour primetime special, she sang the classic song, “Santa Baby.” Once the tree was lit, she came back on stage with a choir singing “Joy to the World,” as seen and heard in this year’s Hallmark Channel original movie “Christmas at Graceland,” in which Pickler made her acting debut.

Once again platinum-selling artist and country music’s King of Christmas, Brett Eldredge took the stage for the second year in a row to spread the holiday spirit at this year’s 86th annual holiday special. He came back to perform a couple of songs off his deluxe edition of ‘Glow’. First appearing on the pre-show looking dashing in a velvet suit jacket, singing a holiday favorite, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Throughout the night he performed alongside an orchestra, showing off his smooth vocals with his rendition of  “Sleigh Bells”, and his original holiday track, “Glow”.

Last, but not least was 4-time CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Martina McBride. She’s back again to celebrate another holiday with us New Yorkers, after recently performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade last week. McBride is currently on her “The Joy of Christmas Tour”, but made a special New York stop to perform her renditions from her latest release, ‘It’s The Holiday Season’. She first took the stage during the pre-show appearing in an elegant maroon dress with a black overcoat performing the holiday classic, “Most Wonderful Time of The Year.” As the night went on she continued to sing her renditions of holiday favorites, “Winter Wonderland” and “Happy Holiday/It’s The Holiday” beautifully.
