Backstreet Boy AJ McLean Releases Video For “Boy And A Man”

Boy And A Man AJ Mclean

If you grew up in the ’90s or early 2000s then you know the phenomenon that is the pop music supergroup, the Backstreet Boys. Now one of those boy band heartthrobs is venturing into a new sound, releasing country music as a solo artist. Singer-songwriter AJ McLean recently released a new song entitled “Boy And A Man,” with a music video to go along with it. This track marks the third song to be released off McLean’s project, Long Road, a record created in Nashville and is first single to go to country radio.

The song “Boy And A Man” shows off the singer’s vulnerable side and feels almost like a countrified version of a Backstreet Boys’ jam. It’s romantic, touching, and catchy, while still showcasing a story-telling aspect that is crucial in a slower-tempo Nashville-infused track. The song feels like it could have been cut by McLean’s friends from Florida Georgia Line, which will be sure to resonate with fans of FGL.

“Cause you deserve better than you’ve had before / Right now you’ve got a fellow standing at your door / I’ll treat you like a lady, ain’t just going to call you baby / Couple kisses and walk away / I ain’t playing little games, I’m just trying to say / Girl, that I’ve gotta plan / Cause I know what you’re missing / I’ma show you the difference between a boy and a man.”

McLean shows off his vocal on the song while highlighting his acting chops in the music video. Directed by Rene Elizondo Jr., the video depicts the whole story of a couple falling in love as kids, dating in high school, getting married as adults, and growing old together. McLean plays the narrator, the elderly man in the beginning and the end of the visuals, as well as, recruits his wife, as the woman he marries in the wedding clips. Like the lyrics, the video feels authentic and heartwarming- just make sure you grab a box of tissues to watch the ending.

To keep up with McLean, follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“Boy And A Man” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Maggie Rose Makes Her National Television Debut on TODAY

Maggie Rose Today

Photo credit: Nathan Congleton / TODAY

Today was a big day for talented Nashville vocalist, Maggie Rose, who made her national TV debut on NBC’s TODAY earlier this morning as part of the Citi Concert Series. The songstress released her impressive sophomore record Change The Whole Thing last September. Just two months later, we hosted a Swag Session with the singer-songwriter, where she sang two incredible songs off her album, including “Pull You Through.” For her national TV debut, Rose performed “It’s You,” an equally powerful song off her record.

During the third hour of the broadcast, co-anchors, Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Craig Melvin welcomed Rose to the stage, as part of The Artist Lounge segment. The new segment spotlights some of our favorite singers as they perform stripped-down versions of their songs. Roker stated “We are so excited to have Maggie Rose in The Artist Lounge,” while Dreyer went on to share, “She recorded her latest album with a live 13 piece band!”

Just before performing her love song, “It’s You,” Melvin quickly introduced the track as a love song, while the talented artist agreed, sharing the sweet sentiment, “we’re all about love.” Looking equally as beautiful as her vocals sounded, Rose gave a killer performance of the track, truly evoking every emotion. Backed by a two-piece band and strapped with a guitar, she showed off her vocal range effortlessly, while conveying the lyrical story with so much poise and charisma. Everything about her performance was stunning and captivating.

Check out the clip below to see for yourself.

Rose continues to play shows across the United States, playing Nashville’s iconic Grand Ole Opry on April 16th alongside fellow country musicians, Montgomery Gentry, Dale Watson, Dustin Lynch, and Kelsea Ballerini. For tickets and more information, head to maggierosemusic.com

The Break Up Playlist You Didn’t Know You Needed

Break-ups come in many forms, with varying degrees of blame, guilt, and heartache. Whatever the circumstances of the end of your relationship, there is a country song that speaks perfectly to what you’re going through.

“Every Little Thing” – Carly Pearce

One of the best things you can do for yourself right after a break-up is let the emotions run their course. “I’m haunted by the memories of every little thing / The high, the hurt, the shine, the sting / Every little thing”. Take off your make-up, cue up this track, and let the tears fall until there is nothing left.

“Tonight I Wanna Cry” – Keith Urban

Another tearjerker (literally) is this KU ballad about a man who realizes letting it out is the only way. “It’s gonna hurt bad before it gets better / But I’ll never get over you by hidin’ this way / I’ve never been the kind to ever let my feelings show / And I thought that bein’ strong meant never losin’ your self-control / To hell with my pride, let it fall like rain from my eyes / Tonight I wanna cry.”

“Tin Man” – Miranda Lambert

There comes a point in every painful break-up when you wonder why on earth it’s even worth having a heart at all. In an ode to the Wizard of Oz character with a hollow chest, “Tin Man” portrays a girl offering up her shattered heart just so she no longer has to feel pain. “Every time you’re feeling empty / Better thank your lucky stars / If you ever felt one breaking / You’d never want a heart.”

“Starts with Goodbye” – Carrie Underwood

If you were the one to end it, this old-school track describes the moment you know it’s time to leave. “So hard to see myself without him / I felt a piece of my heart break / But when you’re standing at a crossroad / There’s a choice you gotta make / It’s sad but sometimes moving on with the rest of your life / Starts with goodbye.” It’s not easy, but sometimes walking away really is best.

“Potential” – Danielle Bradberry

Some relationships end not because you aren’t in love, but because you realize your partner is never going to change. “I could tell myself that you’ll get there, you’ll get there / But the more that you don’t, the less blind I am / I’m not in love with you / I’m in love with your potential”. The truth hurts, but it also sets you free.

“Clean” – Taylor Swift

The end of a toxic relationship can feel like a weight has lifted. “The rain came pouring down when I was drowning / That’s when I could finally breathe / And that morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean.”  You are not defined by your choices, and you are strong enough to start over.

“Break Up in the End” – Cole Swindell

A relationship can be fleeting and still teach us valuable lessons. “Even if I knew you’d be my best and worst mistake / Oh, I’d still make it with you / Over and over, again and again, / Even though we break up in the end.” Just because it wasn’t meant to be doesn’t mean it was a waste of time or that you’d do anything differently if given the chance.

“Rules of Breaking Up” – Brandon Ratcliff

We all know them, don’t call after being out late, don’t go to the same bars you used to go to together, those rules that you must abide by when you are dealing with a breakup. Rising artist Brandon Ratcliff wrote a song about that one relationship that makes you want to break all of those rules. “Whoever wrote the rules of breaking up never kissed your lips / Touched your skin, held the world at their fingertips / Didn’t have a clue what heaven was / No they didn’t have to lose that kind of love”.

“Break Up In a Small Town” – Sam Hunt

Even in a big city, it’s hard to fly solo after time as a couple. “There’s only so many streets, so many lights / I swear it’s like I can’t even leave my house / I should’ve known all along / You gotta move or move on / When you break up in a small town.” You’re paranoid that you’ll run into your ex, and you see places in town as tainted, but the truth is, that’s perfectly normal.

“Like We Never Loved At All” – Tim McGraw and Faith Hill

Crossing paths with your ex for the first time is scary. And if he or she doesn’t acknowledge you at all it can feel like a dagger straight to the chest. “How can you just walk on by // Without one tear in your eye? // Don’t you have the slightest feelings left for me? / Maybe that’s just your way / Of dealing with the pain / Forgetting everything between our rise and fall / Like we never loved at all.”

“Best Days of Your Life” – Kellie Pickler

At some point, you’ll realize that you’re better off without them. In fact, it’s their loss entirely, because they’ll never find someone better than you. “Cause I’ll be there, in the back of your mind / From the day we met to the very last night / And it’s just too bad, cause you’ve already had the best days / The best days of your life.” Sing it loud and sing it proud, there are other fish in the sea.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Britnee Kellog

Britnee Kellogg

“Regardless of what it looks like in the end and how successful I am, my kids will know that I worked really hard to do what I loved”

Our Swag Spotlight this week is not only a hardworking and dedicated country music artist but an equally devoted mother to her three young children. Britnee Kellogg, a Vancouver, Washington native, knew from an extremely young age that country music was the career path she was meant to pursue. When she was just nine-years-old, her grandparents took her to a Johnny Cash concert, and that was all it took for her to fall in love with country music and set her sights on a profession in the incredible genre we all know and love. Kellogg’s grandparents surrounded her with the older traditional style of country music growing up, everyone from Reba McEntire, Waylon & Willie and all of the greats in between.

Soon after attending that life-changing concert, Kellogg began taking vocal lessons straight away and soon set out to perform at local fairs and singing competitions. This later led to the songstress becoming Miss Teen Washington while she was in high school. After winning the pageant, she received the opportunity to head down to Nashville, Tennessee for a chance to become Miss Teen America. Kellogg promptly fell in love with Music City and all it had to offer. Ever since that trip, she has makes an effort to visit several times a year and recently at least once a month.

Kellogg currently still resides in Vancouver, Washington for a handful of reasons, the main being her children. But she tells us; “If an opportunity came, I would pack my bags up in five minutes and leave right away.”
The singer-songwriter is a massive advocate for working parents everywhere, especially the ones who set out to follow their dream career and are dedicated to following through with what they are passionate about, no matter what field of work it may be in. “One of my biggest reasons for doing this is, I want to inspire moms, dads, people, in general, to pursue their dreams regardless of what their circumstances look like [..] It’s not easy, it’s really hard most days, but I just want people to know it’s so worth it!”

Kellogg’s current single, “Someone Somebody Loves” is the lead single and title track off of her upcoming EP, which is slated for release next Friday, April 5th. She wrote this song back in 2013 when she was feeling defeated in multiple aspects of her life. Going through a tough time personally and professionally, she thought to herself, “I just want to be someone somebody loves.” Kellogg knew she wasn’t the only one going through a difficult time and that she could help inspire others who were struggling, to know that someday you’ll have that opportunity. She tells us, “It’s not just about love, it’s about life in general.” This track originally didn’t make the cut for the EP, until she played it live on tour while opening for Blake Shelton last summer. Tons of people came up to her asking where they could get that song and she immediately switched out one of the other songs that were in the running and made this the title track.

“The EP is a total compilation of songs that kind of tell my story from the pain that I’ve been through, the heartbreak that I went through, but then also the fun part of me, the whiskey drinking side of me. And also falling in love and being in an amazing relationship now. It’s a start to where I am now,” she says. Kellogg was adamant that it was important to her to be a co-writer on every song she puts out, which stems from writing her first song in 7th grade and falling in love with the art. The full EP was created in Nashville, where the songstress worked with a number of incredibly talented musicians, from Miranda Lambert’s keyboard player and Carly Pearce’s dobro player to Little Big Town’s drummer.

Kellogg has big plans for the rest of 2019. She is currently writing for her full-length album and gearing up for a small northwest tour, with stops in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. The Vancouver native also tells us she has set out a few hopes and goals this year which are to visit Nashville more often for writing and recording sessions this year, as well as begin to participate in writers rounds, with her biggest goal being to get signed to a record label.

Be sure to follow Kellogg on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to not miss a single announcement or release in 2019.

Brandon Ratcliff Performs at an Intimate New York City Bar

Brandon Ratcliff

Last night (3/25), the NYCountry Swag team headed to Beckett’s Bar & Grill in downtown Manhattan to listen to rising country artist and one of New York Country Swag’s 2019 Artists to Watch, Brandon Ratcliff performed an intimate set for Sofar Sounds. This marks the second time, we’ve been able to witness the singer-songwriter’s talents with the first time being back in February, during Country Radio Seminar.

Ratcliff’s performance was part of a string of ‘Sofar Sounds’ shows that he participated in, sharing that NYC was his second to last show. A ‘Sofar’ gig is a unique show held at different venues, fans sit on the floor surrounding the artist and listen to each act play three to four songs. Most times, the crowd doesn’t know in advance which acts are performing that night, giving the rising artist a chance to organically garner fans and to interact with audiences in cities across the globe.

After a quick introduction by the emcee, the Monument Records recording artist got right into his acoustic set, performing his first unreleased song “Sometimes, Always, Never You,” with help from two band members. The catchy country and R&B infused jam resonated well with the audience, who were all swaying to the beat of the track. After the song, Ratcliff showed off his humble and vivacious personality, introducing his family and friends who were present, as well as, sharing his journey as a singer and a songwriter.

Ratcliff shared that he moved to Nashville from a small-town in Louisiana, four years ago, where he met fellow songwriters Pete Good and AJ Babcock. Read more about his backstory here in our Swag Spotlight interview. The three formed an undeniable relationship and got busy writing each and every song off his debut album, slated for release sometime later this year.

The Swag Spotlight alum continued his performance, singing the most recent song he has released, “Number in My Phone.” Excited to share this song, Ratcliff exclaimed “This song is one of my favorites off the record because I love writing about relationships because I think it’s something that we can all relate to,” adding, “Relationships are some of the most important in our lives.”

Ratcliff went on to sing his next unreleased song, “Slow Down, Hometown.” The ballad was truly touching and showed off the singer’s artistry and songwriting skills. He shared, “So I kinda wrote this song almost as a love letter to my hometown. I know you gotta move on, I know there’s a new set of kids coming up in this town, but just for a small time, while we’re here, in this moment, can we be who we were when you were my hometown?!” Adding later, that fellow musician, and one of his family friends, Alison Krauss lent her voice to this record.

Ratcliff closed out his show with the first song he ever released publicly, announcing that the song will go to country radio next month as his first single. The track already has over 20 million streams and counting and is sure to be a hit on the radio. “This song is super special because it’s kinda the catalyst that started this whole record. […] “Rules” really was just the song that was about the one relationship that made you want to break all those rules. This song’s called “Rules of Breaking Up”.”

At the end of his 20-minute set, Ratcliff took some time to answer some personal questions from fans, including how he met his wife and of course, sharing his upcoming tour plans. The artist will accompany fellow country stars, Kelsea Ballerini and Brett Young this spring on the ‘Miss Me More Tour.’ For more information and dates head to brandonratcliff.com

Jennifer Nettles’ Powerful Video for “I Can Do Hard Things”

On Friday morning, Jennifer Nettles debuted her video for “I Can Do Hard Things” on NBC’s Today Show. The video is powerful and profound – it includes real people talking about their struggles and overcoming them. The stripped down, black and white filtered video is a perfect backdrop to the raw emotion and purity that each of these women displays.

The video shares the stories of eight strong and resilient women (details below). The song lyrics address that things are not always easy, but that doesn’t mean we can’t overcome the struggles; that’s part of what makes us who we are. We are continually growing as women every day and each situation pushes us to be the person we will become. “I can laugh and I can love and I can dream” despite the challenges. If this isn’t a perfect message for women in today’s society, we don’t know what is!

Courtesy of YouTube, here are the details on these wonderful women :

Jamie Combs: A former business owner and stylist, she’s an advocate for the transgender community, as well as a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Morgan Leigh Garner: A singer/songwriter, mother, and an Army wife. She is raising her family, chasing her music dreams and holding down the home front as her husband serves our country as a Special Forces Soldier.

Kate Davis: A photographer who also works as a Chief of Staff for an actress/activist, she’s adopting a baby as a proud single woman.

Audrey Ynigez-Gutierrez: A graduate research assistant, she is a caregiver to her disabled mother.

Holly Gleason: Journalist and consultant, she has spent the last two years quietly battling the profound aftermath of a Me Too sexual assault.

Ali Harnell: A high-level career concert and event promoter, she has been chosen as the President of Live Nation’s Woman Nation to empower women in the entertainment industry.

Danielle Randolph: An active firefighter and member of the National Guard, she challenges perceptions of women in male-dominated industries.

Caroline Randall Williams: Award-winning poet, performance artist, and food writer creating art that tells the untold stories of women of color in her life and in the world.

“When you share your own story, you own your power. And when you own your power, it is harder for someone to take it from you,” said Nettles in a recent press release. “When you share in community, you protect each other’s power and that makes it even harder for someone to take it from you.” Watch the uplifting video above.

Kassi Ashton Gets Honest with “Pretty Shiny Things”

Kassi Ashton Pretty Shiny Things

Rising country artist, and one of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Kassi Ashton released her brand new song entitled, “Pretty Shiny Things” today showcasing her undeniable talent. The song was produced by Luke Laird and co-written by Ashton and Emily Landis. The singer-songwriter has been teasing the song on social media for the past week and did not disappoint, she even put out a lyric video to accompany the track.

Releasing a song close to her heart, she mentioned in a press release, “Three years ago, this song was there for me in the middle of the night. Like a diary entry that was writing to me, not me writing it. It has silently waited, given guidance and reminded me that honest art is the best art. I’m honored to be passing it along to whoever needs it now.”

The emotional ballad puts her vulnerability on full display, keeping the melody simple in the background with just an acoustic guitar while showing off her powerful vocals. The lyrics of the track tell a story describing the pressures women face to be perfect on the outside, no matter the pain on the inside. In this song’s case its a mother pressuring the daughter telling her, “There ain’t a secret you can’t hide / Bottle it up on the inside / Put your makeup on girl stand up straight / Your face will take you farther than your brain / You oughta know by now beauty is pain / Pretty Shiny Things.” Ending the song with a positive message that you are more than just your beauty, “Ain’t nothin’ pretty about a perfect life.” Giving listeners exactly what they need to hear.

To keep up with Kassi Ashton follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
