On Friday night in New York City at Gramercy Theatre, the crowd waited patiently for Jillian Jacqueline by listening to her opener, Joy Olakodun. This singer/songwriter from Arizona is incredibly sarcastic and funny, which is only an addition to her insane vocals. Her demeanor and stories had everyone laughing and falling in love with her immediately. As soon as she opened her mouth, you knew you had a new artist to follow; she made you want to even just be friends with her. She’s definitely one to add her to your Spotify playlist.

When Jacqueline came out, sporting an adorable striped jumpsuit and sneakers, everyone was ready for her, and you could tell she had some major fans in the room. After playing “Prime”, “Reasons”, and “Somebody”, she talked about how special this show was to her. You could tell she was really excited. “The last time I played this room, I was opening up for another artist; I think it was about five years ago. This is kind of a full circle moment for me when I walked down the street today and saw my name up there, I definitely shed a little bit of a tear.” She had a lot of family in the room, explaining that she was Italian, so they just “came out of the woodwork”. She also said she just got married two weeks prior, calling this the “Honeymoon Tour”, because her husband happens to be her guitarist.

She followed with the slower “Sugar and Salt”, that has a bit more of a country vibe than some of her more indie tunes. Asking where all her codependent people were at, she played “Friends” off her album Side B. After, she talked about how she had been in Nashville for about 8 years, and shortly after moving, she made a list of all the songs she wish she’d written, and then she tried to track down all of those songwriters that wrote those songs. “It was very aggressive, but that’s just the way that I am.” In addition, she wrote down a dream list of who she’d want to collaborate with, and one of them was Keith Urban, who is featured on her song “If I Were You”. “Little did I know that 8 years later, we would have a song together. It’s just really, really cool, it makes this song even more special because when I wrote this song, it was actually the first song I wrote about Bryan, which is hilarious because it’s basically saying, ‘Get the hell away from me’”.

She can switch styles so seamlessly, evident when she played her cover of “I Feel It Coming”. Jacqueline talked about how since this was a headlining gig, she can play songs she never plays anymore. Talking about “Overdue”, she said, “This was the first song I ever released as a solo artist…I guess it hit a nerve; for me, I wrote it in a time when I was very lonely and really hoping to find someone, and it kinda just came out one day. It was like a journal entry…It’s really cool to feel that this song has connected with so many people over the years and it’s meant a lot to other people the same way that it did to me when I wrote it.” Everyone really related to this song and sang along.

She followed with her beautiful “Kids These Days”, “Sad Girls” with a story about getting poison ivy for six weeks after shooting that music video, and a new song “When It Rains”. After a few more songs, and an encore, her fans went home happy after hearing all of their favorites, old and new.

10 Great Country Songs To Celebrate Mother’s Day!

From day one our moms have been there showing us the ins and outs of life, making sure we have everything we’ve ever needed to succeed. Where would we be without them? While we can’t thank our moms enough for everything they do, we’ve compiled a list of songs to show our appreciation to them. Happy Mother’s Day!

1. “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted” – Carrie Underwood
Written by Carrie Underwood, Brett James, and Hillary Lindsey, Underwood shares the joy of being a mother. Released in 2015 on Underwood’s album Storyteller, the singer-songwriter shares that she never pictured herself being a mom but now couldn’t imagine her life any other way.

“And now I’m holdin’ what I never knew I always wanted / I couldn’t see, I was blind ‘til my eyes were opened / I didn’t know there was a hole / Something missing in my soul / ’Til you filled it up, oh, with your love”

2. “In My Daughter’s Eyes’- Martina McBride

Written by James T. Slater, “In My Daughter’s Eyes” was released in 2003 on McBride’s album Martina. It’s not only a song about the special bond a mother and daughter have, but it also shows how having a daughter can change a mother’s life for the better.

“In my daughter’s eyes / I am a hero / I am strong and wise / And I know no fear / But the truth is plain to see / She was sent to rescue me / I see who I want to be / In my daughter’s eyes”

3. “Mama’s Song” – Carrie Underwood
Written by Carrie Underwood, Kara DioGuardi, Luke Laird, and Marti Frederiksen, “Mama’s Song,” is a song all moms need to hear before their daughters head down the aisle. Released in 2009 on Underwood’s album Play On, “Mama’s Song” is about a daughter thanking her mother for everything she’s done and teaching her about life, but letting her mother know she’s in good hands going into the next phase of life.

“And he is good, so good / He treats your little girl like a real man should / He is good, so good, he makes promises he keeps / No he’s never gonna leave / So don’t you worry about me”

4. “The Best Day”– Taylor Swift
Written by Taylor Swift herself in 2009 for her album Fearless, “The Best Day,” shares that no matter how tough times got, especially during middle school when her friends turned their back on her, Swift’s mom was always there, isn’t that true about all moms?

“I don’t know who I’m gonna talk to now at school/But I know I’m laughing/On the car ride home with you/ Don’t know how long it’s gonna take to feel okay/But I know I had the best day with you today”

5. “So I Sang” – Darius Rucker
Released in 2015 on Darius Rucker’s album Southern Style, “So I Sang,” shares the message that his mom was ok with him following his singing career. Written by Rucker, Rivers Rutherford, and Tim James, it shares the great message that no matter what you want to be when you grow up, moms always believe in their children.

“No one believed in me as much as Mom/ See, she worked overtime to buy my first guitar”

6. “Angels” – Randy Travis
Released in 2004 on Randy Travis’s album Passing Through, shares the message that all mothers are angels. From making sure you are healthy at birth, to staying up late making sure you were safe, mothers constantly go out of their way to take care of their children, something they don’t get enough credit for.

“Are you telling me that you’ve never seen an angel?/ Never felt the presence of one standing by?/No robe of white/No halo in site/Well you missed the most obvious thing/Aw man, are you blind?/Just look in your mother’s eyes”

7. ”Mother Like Mine” – The Band Perry

“Mother Like Mine” reminds us all that mom is the foundation of the family and without her, we’d fall apart. Written by Kimberly Perry, Neil Perry, and Reid Perry for their album Pioneer, it questions how the world would look if a mom raised it. We think it would look pretty good.

“So the wars would all be over/’Cause she’d raise us all as friends/And no one would ever wonder if somebody wanted them/We’d walk on grass that’s greener/And our cares would all be freer/If the world had a mother like mine”

8. “The Best Part of Me”- Lee Brice

Released in 2017 on Lee Brice’s self-titled album, “The Best Part of Me” while isn’t a direct song about mothers, it shares the greatest joy of being a parent and how children instantly become the best part of you.

Something takes over me / Every moment you hold my hand / Hearts beating time / As the starts all align and I understand / That the best part of me, the best part of me, oh / Yeah the best part of me, part of me is you”

9. “Kingdom” – Carrie Underwood
Off her new album Cry Pretty, “Kingdom” is a song about how not every home is perfect, but it’s where memories are made. Written by Underwood, Chris DeStefano, and Dave Barnes, the song gives us a look inside the singer-songwriters life and how her, her husband and children make their house a home.

“It’s two kids flying down the hall in the morning in our bedroom / It’s a creaky board on the front porch you swear you’re gonna fix it soon / It’s the kitchen table where we say our prayers, give a little thanks to the man upstairs”

10. “Mom” – Garth Brooks

A more unknown Garth Brooks song, but one very close to our Managing Editor, Christina’s heart is “Mom”. A song that is about an unborn baby talking to God before he comes down to earth to meet his mother. Listen to the clip above from Christina chatting with Garth Brooks at a recent iHeart Radio event. about the song before he played it just for her.

“So, hush now baby don’t you cry /  ‘Cause there’s someone down there waiting / Whose only goal in life / Is makin’ sure you’re always gonna be alright / A loving angel, tender, tough and strong / It’s almost time to go and meet your mom”

[Listen] Matt Stell’s New Single “Everywhere But On”

Everywhere But On Matt Stell

It’s been a busy few months for rising country star Matt Stell, who made his Opry debut on April 27, signed with Arista Nashville, and continues to see his song “Prayed for You” climb the charts. On May 24, he’ll release his EP, Everywhere But On, and today (May 10), the title-track was released.

Running from lost love, “Everywhere But On” tells the story of a man avoiding the memories of an ex by moving from place to place, picking up odd jobs (“loading trucks, pouring coffee, pouring concrete”), and doing anything possible to get over an ex. On the somber ballad, Stell admits that moving on was “supposed to be easy,” but instead finds himself lost in memories, finally realizing he’s moved “everywhere but on.”

“I’ve been from Savannah to Long Beach/ Trying to keep your memory out of reach / But there you were in the Delta nights, the Santa Fe Sun, the Colorado sky / I could add another pushpin to the map / But that don’t stop me from missing you looking back/ Guess there’s just one place I haven’t gone/ I’ve moved everywhere but on.”

In many ways, “Everywhere But On” is the evil twin of of “Prayed for You,” showing the negative, heartbreaking side of love as opposed to the hopeful optimism of “Prayed.” Back in September, Stell previewed this track for NYCountry Swag listeners as a part of a Swag Session, which you can watch below.

The Everywhere But On EP will be released on May 24, and will feature seven tracks co-written by Stell, in addition to a collaboration with Jimmie Allen. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to release my new EP, ‘Everywhere But On’,” shares Stell in a press release. “I’m lucky that I get to write songs almost every day. Every so often I have the chance to go into the studio with a batch of songs and turn a killer band loose on them. This EP has been my favorite project yet. I can’t wait to share how it turned out!”

Everywhere But On EP Track Listing:
1. Last Habit (Matt Stell, Jamie Moore, Brian Maher)
2. Better I Drink (Matt Stell, Autumn McEntire, Larry McCoy)
3. Everywhere But On (Matt Stell, Paul Sikes, Lance Miller)
4. Home In A Hometown feat. Jimmie Allen (Matt Stell, Ash Bowers, Matt Rogers)
5. I Bet Whiskey Would (Matt Stell, Chris Tompkins, Zach Abend)
6. Prayed For You (Matt Stell, Allison Veltz, Ash Bowers)
7. Reason Why (Matt Stell, Paul Sikes, Matt Alderman)

Luke Combs Performs “Beer Never Broke My Heart” On Jimmy Fallon

To celebrate the latest release of his new song, Luke Combs took on New York City to promote his long-anticipated new single. Combs performed his new single “Beer Never Broke my Heart” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night making the song’s television debut.

Just before Combs took the stage, Fallon introduced Combs with “Oh you’re going to love this song! Here with the TV debut of his new single “Beer Never Broke My Heart” give it up for Luke Combs.”

The backdrop perfectly displayed Combs’ new music video for this single. The red-steamy background was in full effect. Starting off the song with his raspy, old-school country powerful voice, Combs gave the fans even more reason to keep listening as if we didn’t have it on repeat already. For his fashion sense, Combs sticks to his roots with wearing what he knows, representing Appalachian State. His stage presence and feel of the song makes you believe every word and this track is nothing but a future hit for the rising superstar.

After the performance was over, Fallon came out on stage overjoyed. As the audience applauded and cheered, Fallon said, “That’s what I’m talking about! Thank you, buddy. Fantastic! Loved It. Luke Combs! “Beer Never Broke My Heart” is out now.” Combs just playing this track back last January, to it going viral on Facebook, to now performing it on live television, the wait is finally over where we can enjoy the song live and studio version.

To keep up with Luke Combs follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“Thinking About You” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our New Country music playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

You can catch Luke Combs on his  ‘Beer Never Broke My Heart’ headlining tour through December, and just announced Morgan Wallen will open for him. For tickets and more information check out lukecombs.com.

Logan Mize Releases “Thinking About You”

Logan Mize

The independent singer-songwriter Logan Mize is giving us an even more sneak peek of his upcoming EP. His forthcoming new, five-song From The Vault EP was created for his dedicated fans and is due May 17. The tracks are from sessions recorded between 2013-2014 that he thought deserved a chance. He recently just dropped his nostalgic track “Only In This Town” and now we’re seeing a different side of his EP today (5/10) with “Thinking About You.”

“Thinking About You” is written by GRAMMY Album Of The Year Award-winner Daniel Tashian, who co-produced Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour and songwriter Troy Verges who has well-known tracks for Tim McGraw and Little Big Town. Mize credits Daniel Tashian’s demo of the song, adding in a recent press release that, “When I heard Daniel Tashian’s demo of this song, it sounded like it should be a big pop classic from a 1980’s John Hughes film. I took it in the studio with a hodgepodge of session players and road guys, and we just had a blast cutting it.” The track starts off with a guitar throwback feel that makes you wanna turn up the radio and bop your head. The song’s about loving everything about someone and not being able to get them off your mind.

“I’ve been thinking about you / How you walk how you talk / Such a pretty mess I see you dancing in your boots and your black dress / Stone cold you’re so fine / I gotta let you know if you were mine I’d never ever let you go / When you move / When you shake it and you down/ Make my heart beat so loud / You’re too good to be true / Yeah, I’ve been thinking about you”

Mize’s unique and authentic sound with a hint southern-rock and country is what sets him apart from every other artist. He’s setting the bar high for independent artists with his upcoming EP From The Vault. Check out our live session with Logan back in 2018 in the video below. Mize will continue playing his headlining tour, “Better Off Gone Tour” through the beginning of June. For tickets and more tour information, check out his website loganmize.com

NYCS First Impression: Rodney Atkins ‘Caught Up In The Country’

Rodney Atkins Caught up in the Country

It has been 8 years since Rodney Atkins released his last album Take a Back Road. It includes hits like “Farmer’s Daughter,” “Take a Back Road,” and “He’s Mine.” Atkins has produced countless chart-topping hits and sold over 10 million albums throughout his career and that had fans wondering why he took such a long break from music. Over Instagram throughout the last year, in anticipation of a new album, he has said that the time away from releasing music has been used to raise a family and in the previous few, to hone his craft to make more chart-topping hits. Caught Up In The Country is finally available and is Atkins newest album.

“Caught Up In The Country” was Atkins first release off the album back in the fall. The song celebrates all the good things that come with living in the country: beautiful sunsets, endless dirt roads, and countless stars in the sky. The boot-stomping single, featuring the Fisk Jubilee Singers, has already garnered over 86.6M on-demand streams and shows no signs of slowing down. “Caught Up In The Country” sets the mood for the whole album with meaningful lyrics and a rhythm that brings you back to your country roots. In our interview with Atkins last summer at Taste of Country Festival, he told us a little bit about the new music on the album stating: “It’s an organic record, but it is kind of me pushing the envelope.” Check out the full interview below.

Everyone knows Atkins song “Watching You,” about a young son who wants to be just like his dad in every way, and to accomplish this, he watches his dad’s every move. One of Atkins newest songs off the new album is “Young Man,” the continuation of the young boy’s life from “Watching You.” He stated on Instagram, “For those, my son was four years old, he’s 17 now, and this is telling him to be where he is, not try to grow up too fast. Be present, at whatever age you are.”

“All My Friends Are Drunk” is the anti-party song for all those who go to parties and don’t drink. The somber song tells a story of a group of friends who try taking their buddy out after a break up who ends up by himself when his friends go off and party. “Thank God For You” is another track off the album that shows his appreciation for the woman in his life. This upbeat song is a great one to sing along to with those around you who you appreciate every day. On a more personal note, we already see Atkins wife, Rose Falcon, appear in “Thank God For You” music video but her vocals also appear on the album in songs “Figure You Out” and “Everybody’s Got Something.” The “Figure Out You (Riddle) [Feat. Rose Falcon],” lyric video was just released and features personal photos of the singer, his two sons and Rose herself.

Other songs on the album include, “My Life,” the powerful story of his wife Rose Falcon’s beloved grandmother, “Burn Something,” a relationship that simply does not work together yet they keep running back, and “Cover Me Up,” a love song about simply being enough as you are.

In a recent press release, Atkins says. “I wanted to really tell a story in the shape and the melody of these songs—there’s more diversity on this record than I’ve ever had before—and to really take time to figure out the nuances because, ultimately, it’s a whole bunch of nuances that add up to make something special.” This album has a song for everyone and we are loving everything that it offers fans both lyrically and it’s rhythm.

To keep up with Rodney Atkins follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Caught Up In The Country is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Exploring Ryan Kinder’s “Stay” With The Opry’s ‘The Write Stuff’

Ryan Kinder The Write Stuff Stay

Last month we introduced you to the new Opry video series, ‘The Write Stuff,’ where Opry Entertainment dives deeper into the stories behind the songwriting. Just last week, singer-songwriter, Ryan Kinder’s song “Stay” was the topic of discussion for a new episode of the mini-series.

The song was was co-written by Kinder, a NYCountry Swag 2018 Artist to Watch, with fellow songwriters, Fred Wilhelm, and Luke Sheets. Originally inspired by the power of Paul McCartney’s vocals, the trio created the epic song to match the delivery of a McCartney song. Wilhelm and Sheets shared that they knew that wanted to mimic that delivery with an artist in Nashville that could convey the same feelings, which led them to Kinder, who eventually went on to not only co-wrote the track, but later release it as his single back in 2018.

Kinder shared the real story about how the melody was created, while he was going to the bathroom, laughing, sharing, “I remember going to the bathroom, where all good idea comes from. And I started singing this melody…”

The gritty, romantic, and bluesy love song was created to convey the simple message of longing and aching for love or a lover. The men achieved that message through the heartfelt vocals, long- dragging notes, and the epic guitar solo. “The line that is the centerpiece of the song to me is “I know that I just can’t be alone right now,” that was kind of the idea and the sentiment we were trying to get across,” explained Wilhelm.

Sheets went on to share that Kinder playing guitar on the track added to it, “You speak more through the guitar than a lot of artists do. We played the solo over 120 times.” Each agreed that the song was an easy one to write and that the pieces came together pretty effortlessly.

Check out the video below to see the men further explain the songwriting process and clips of Kinder performing the song in the famed circle of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
