Teddy Robb Releases “Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You” Music Video

Teddy Robb is one of country’s newcomers and one of our 2019 Artists To Watch. We welcomed him this past weekend at our Country Bunch and are admiring his music video for his release “Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You”. A native of Akron, Ohio, Robb played football throughout college at Kent State before his world opened up after hearing George Strait’s “Troubadour.” He then packed his bags and headed to music city where he signed a publishing deal with SMACK and later signed with Monument Records.  Read more about his journey to Nashville in our Swag Spotlight here.

Written by hitmakers, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne, and Old Dominion’s Trevor Rosen, the visual trails Robb meandering the countryside at the start before walking into an empty bar to meet up with a girl continuing their love story back in the scenic views. This rustic, homey assemblage of memories makes one want to embark on a similar expedition. The recording artist loves the outdoors, so it is no surprise that this video features some of the most beautiful shots of Colorado, the mountain ranges, and wide-open plains. The contrast from a dark dingey bar to the brilliant nature that surrounds the couple, adds to the already infectious song.

The song is a brutally honest depiction of alcohol cajoled love, in a fun way, but maybe not the wisest. Robb bids an admonition: “There ain’t really no such thing as a gin and platonic.” In time, things seem like a great idea until looking back from the future. Clever cliches and catchy play on words embellish the singer’s single paying homage to a vibe similar to Old Dominions’.

NYCS Swag Spotlight LJ

LJ Music

Our Swag Spotlight this week shines on LJ, a Houston, Texas native who moved to Nashville back in 2017 to pursue her love of songwriting and infuses her own blend of country music. Growing up in a huge family, LJ tells us in a recent interview that she loved listening to her dad play guitar, played sports from a young age and considered herself a tomboy, fishing and hunting.  It wasn’t until she hit her teenage years that she really took an interest in music, at age 13 her father gave her his guitar to play around with and she would listen to Sheryl Crow and Colbie Calliat and eventually taught herself how to play by ear. “We daydream when we are kids, some people want to be an astronaut, a fireman or a doctor or whatever that may be but I hadn’t’ really daydreamed about music until I was in high school,” she explains.

She recalls loving all different types of music growing up, including Latin music, dance music, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, and Brian McKnight but being from Texas, George Strait was definitely one of her biggest musical influences. She recalls seeing him play at Greune Hall when she was young and being enamored by his stage presence and the live music. From a young age, she loved certain melodies and she loves that she can bring those different melodies that she grew up loving and help evolve her own, now in a music career of her own.

She met her husband, Ricky, while he was playing baseball for Rice University and she was his support system through his career playing professionally. She tells us that it wasn’t that she put her dreams on hold, but she knew she wanted to be there for him, traveling with him and supporting his career. All the while, LJ was working on creating connections, networking as well as experience what the life of someone always on the road is like, something that would bode well for her future career. “All of this traveling and grind of trying to make it to the majors, it was equipping me to realize the work that goes into making it in the music industry, all of the steps that it takes not just to get a record deal, there is so much you pour into that.”

The day after retired and played his last game, the two of them hopped into a Uhaul and moved to Nashville, ready to start realizing and trying to follow her career path as a musician and songwriter in Music City.  “If there is something you are supposed to do, I think a lot of people can look back on their journies in life and they were probably were once in a position of ‘I don’t know how I am  going to get there’ but we have to do our part by planting the seeds and there are times when we can’t always be the person to water them or give them sunshine, there is something else that comes in and does that,” she poetically explains. “I believe that God has done that for me, he has opened up doors that are unexplainable, I know it’s God, I’m just here for the ride.”

Her most recent single, “Vegas” was written with Kelly Archer and Nathan Spicer and they looked to emulate the feel-good, light-hearted feelings that the city of Las Vegas can bring out in people. “When I was dating Ricky, I remember feeling like I wanted to run off and marry him, so we wanted to give that feeling of like, getting on a plane and going to the place that has tested the time of running away and getting married.”

The video, shot in one day and of course, in the city of lights, perfectly sums up that sentiment of being carefree and getting married in Vegas. “We shot at this chapel in vegas, the most famous wedding chapel and it was packed, around the clock people getting married from all over the world,” LJ tells us of the experience”.  “Couples that are so in love, it was so neat to see that. There is a lot of love here. When you are in love and you want to get married, it doesn’t matter where you get married.” She and her husband even renewed their vows while they were there shooting, a moment that will always be a fond memory for them. Fans of the video can head to CMT and vote for “Vegas”

Looking ahead to the end of 2019 and into the new year, LJ is playing a few rounds at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, a place she loves to play because it is so iconic for songwriters. She looks ahead to 2020 and releasing even more new music, working with Red Creative Group, her publisher.

To keep up with LJ follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Jordan Davis Releases “Trouble Town” and Announces Headlining Tour

Jordan Davis Trouble Town Tour

Mike Spotz (@illkoncept) for NYCountry Swag

With both a number one and number two single under his belt “Singles You Up” and “Take It From Me” from his critically-acclaimed debut record Home State, Jordan Davis decided to up the ante, finally releasing new music. “Trouble Town” premiered last Friday (10/25) and it has the signature Davis vibe that fans are sure to love. Fan club ‘The Parish’ members got to hear the song first, as Davis made it available early for diehard fans.

The new mid-tempo song is laid-back, cool, and enticing, fitting into his catalog of songs effortlessly. Its sensual message is clearly meant for lovers, as Davis laments about knowing that he’s headed for ‘no good,’ but that he cannot help himself. Written by the singer with songwriters, Josh Jenkins and Matthew Jenkins, the song is as relatable as it gets. We all can relate to knowing that something or someone is bad for us, but yet, it is still desirable. As always, Davis conveys honest and vulnerable lyrics that make his music so refreshing.

“Gimme those ‘Leave here’ eyes / I’ll follow you out that door / Ain’t even left the parking lot / Already know that I’m heading for / Trouble town”

Davis just ended a successful opening gig on tour with Old Dominion. We caught his performance when the tour stopped in New York City back in May. Going forward, the recording artist will be a staple at country music festivals this season, including Tortuga as well as his headlining tour, announced early this morning. The “Trouble Town” Tour will feature two rising female artists that we love, Hailey Whitters and Kassi Ashton. Both ladies just joined Maren Morris on her GIRL The World Tour and we caught the show at Radio City Music Hall.

“I’m really excited to get back on the road and in front of my amazing fans,” Davis says in a recent press release. “Kassi is just a true artist in every sense of the word and Hailey is an extremely talented songwriter, I’m glad the rest of the world is getting to know both of them. Not only are they incredible songwriters, singers, and artists but they are even better people and I’m honored to have them out with me.”

Donovan Woods and Ruston Kelly Perform in New York City

Bowery Ballroom, a downtown venue in New York City was the quintessential spot for artists like Donovan Woods and Ruston Kelly on the Brightly Burst Tour. The dark spacious room gives you that vibe you can only get in New York City, where the list of all of the recesses with interesting events happen is never-ending. Early on the venue was filled with the excitement and energy that already enveloped the place. These attendees may not be your typical country fan crowd, but definitely repeat listeners to the artists playing tonight.

Donovan Woods / Ruston Kelly

Donovan Woods came out right away with his dry sense of humor, telling the crowd to go ahead and start drafting that text to their exes, and talking about how his fans are “Caucasian fellows with their beers up singing”. He opened with one of our personal favorites, “It’ll Work Itself Out” which is how I discovered him. The crowd was eerily silent. You couldn’t help but be mesmerized by his voice and this song. It touches you so deeply, and simply puts you at ease.  He charmed the crowd with his sense of humor saying, “Well, we’re gonna do the second song now,” in the most sarcastic way. This Canadian knows how to work a crowd with his music and with his banter. It was so interesting how his songs are so emotional, and then as soon as that’s over, he would come straight at you with the humor. “Our Friend Bobby” was next, combining the story of two of his friends into one person, saying his friends are the type of people who get arrested for stealing things from construction sites. “Another Way” was next, in which he told the story of watching people set up a wedding in Michigan, followed by the ever-popular “Portland, Maine” which was cut by Tim McGraw.  Something about this song just has the coolest notes and is so soothing; you can feel the wrought emotion, and the steel guitar just completes the track perfectly.

Ruston Kelly Donovan Woods

Ruston Kelly took the stage next and picked up the energy a bit with “Cover My Tracks”, that has a bit more indie-rock sound. He talks about writing that in rehab, and, “looking out and seeing so many sing that with me is one of the most surreal and special things ever.” His harmonica just sets the whole mood perfectly and is the ideal complement to his tunes. “Mockingbird” and “Jericho” were two of our favorites of his set.

The Brightly Burst Tour heads to Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois this week. For tickets and more information head to https://www.rustonkelly.com/

Chris Lane Marries Lauren Bushnell in a Surprise Nashville Wedding

Fall is proving to be the season of love for country music artists! Just last month, Tyler Rich married his fiancé, Sabina Gadecki in an epic festival theme wedding, while earlier this month rising country artists Carly Peace and Michael Ray said their vows at an intimate ceremony in Nashville. Now People magazine reported that lovebirds Chris Lane and Bachelor alum Lauren Bushnell wed in a “secret garden” wedding in their hometown of Nashville.

In front of 160 family members and friends, the couple exchanged vows, at a romantic spot called 14TENN, where flowers created the perfect indoor garden ambiance that Bushnell desired. For their first dance, the darling couple danced to the acoustic version of the proposal song that Lane penned called “Big, Big Plans.”

According to the couple, the song “was inspired by [their] relationship, and it has such a special meaning to [them,” adding, “so I don’t think we could really dance to anything else.

After a quick getaway with his now, wife, Lane will head back on the road, headlining his ‘Big, Big Plans Tour,” with special guests Gabby Barrett, Blanco Brown, and Ernest. The tour kicks off on Halloween in Cincinnati.

Congratulations to The Lanes!

Chris Janson and Ross Ellis Entertain on the Real Friends Tour

Country-star and Grand Ole Opry member, Chris Janson, and the Real Friends Tour, named after his new album that dropped last Friday, stopped on Long Island Thursday night at the Paramount Theater in Huntington. He brought along special guest, Ross Ellis.

Ross Ellis

Ellis opened his 30-minute acoustic set with two original songs in “Ghosts” and “Barefoot Dancer”. The singer-songwriter also debuted some unreleased music he’s been working on including “Without You” and “2000 and You”. He mentioned that he had just learned the chords 25 minutes ago backstage. Ellis’ vocal chords are similar to those of country super-star, Brett Young as both do a great job of expanding their range to hit the high notes. This was made apparent when Ellis beautifully covered King of Leon’s “Use Somebody”. He then performed a cover of a song he wrote for Tim McGraw titled, “Neon Church”. He closed his set with his most recent release “Buy and Buy”.

A half-hour later, headliner Chris Janson took the stage, starting his set with three songs from his second album, Everybody with “Redneck Life”, the title track and its lead single, “Fix a Drink”. He quickly got the crowd cheering when he broke out his harmonica for “Redneck Life”. “It’s hard to get me away from home during hunting season but man, when it’s New York, I’m coming; that’s it.”

It was a big week for Janson as his new album came out last week and its lead single “Good Vibes” hit number one on country radio, making it the singer-songwriter’s third number one hit. He was in Manhattan all week promoting it, he even made an appearance on the Today Show. He said performing on Long Island was the most relaxed he’s been all week.

Chris Janson

Janson was spreading good moods all night long, constantly reminding the crowd that there’s a lot to be thankful for and there’s a lot of reasons to get up every morning. “The Power of Positive Drinking”, “Who’s Your Farmer?” and his newest number one were next in the set. He blended “Good Vibes” with Bob Marley’s “Every Little Thing is Gonna Be Alright”. “I don’t take a second of it for granted,” he said. “Good Vibes” is the song and it has changed my life.”

After performing a new song off Real Friends, “Waitin’ On 5” and a cover of Vern Gosdin’s “Set ‘em up Joe”, he brought out his Grand Ole Opry mic stand and told us the story of his upbringing, growing up in a trailer park in Missouri. The next song, from his debut album, Buy Me a Boat, “White Trash” was inspired by his life before moving to Nashville. Janson, who was a big talker, told another story about how he met his wife. He was at a bar with his friends in Nashville when he first laid eyes on this girl. He said to them: “I’m going to marry that girl over there, done and done; that’s it” to which they responded: “yeah, right; she’s hot.” Well, it happened, they have been married for ten years and they have four kids, two of which they had together. Janson doesn’t like the term “step kids” however; he prefers the term “bonus kids”. “Children are the light of the world and it’s a blessing to have them,” he praises. “They’re happy, they’re healthy and they got ten fingers and ten toes apiece and I’m just thankful for that.” That story set up his next song, “Holdin’ Her”.

As much as the crowd loved his stories and slow songs, he brought the energy back with a song he co-wrote with LOCASH called “I Love This Life”, which was also the motto he was promoting all night. He then stopped singing and began to spread his arms open and closed, then up and down. The audience was very confused so Janson addressed the issue. “I dance like this when I’m in a good mood. Everyone do it with me.” Sure enough, the whole crowd followed suit and joined him in this weird, interpretive dance he was displaying.

Chris Janson

Janson headed to the piano to perform a few covers, including Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”, Elton John’s “Rocketman”, Tom Petty’s “Learning To Fly” and a Long Island favorite, Billy Joel’s “Piano Man”. This song was fitting for the arena and Janson as he loves his showcase his harmonica skills. Already at the piano, he then played his ACM-winning song, “Drunk Girl”.

Janson placed this next song in the setlist because of a fan he met at his meet-and-greet before the show. The fan explained when he lost his job and was depressed, it was his music that got him through it. “If you’re in here and you feel like sometimes you’re a little out of place, I wrote this song for people like you and me.” Janson then performed a new song called “Everybody’s Going Through Something”. Janson played another song he wrote for an artist in Tim McGraw’s “Truck Yeah”. During the rock-infused country song, he took over the drum set and on the first strike, his stick broke in half. He managed to finish the solo, however.

To end the night, he played his next single that comes to country radio the week of Thanksgiving, “Done”. In this song, Janson realizes his purpose in life is to give his wife the best life possible. He sings “Just say the word, girl, paint me, you’re perfect. I won’t quit till the good lord says my work is done.” He followed that with his first number one hit in “Buy Me a Boat”.

If you have never seen Chris Janson before, move it to the top of your bucket list because he is so fun to watch perform. He has a variety of songs, some that hit you hard, some that make you want to party, even some that make you laugh. He is an extremely talented musician on the guitar, the drums and of course, the harmonica. But the best part about his act to us, was seeing the pure the joy on his face during each and every song. He loves what he does and is incredibly grateful for everything he has in life. He thanked us a lot last night, but we’re the ones who owe him thanks.

Janson’s tour continues up until December 7th. He mentioned at the show that he will be back in New York performing at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade this year. Janson is also a part of the stacked lineup at 94.7’s Stars and Strings at the Barclays Center on December 4th.

NYCS First Impression: Jon Langston ‘Now You Know’ EP

Rising country singer-songwriter, Jon Langston released his new Extended Play, Now You Know on Friday featuring songs such as “Now You Know”, “Dance Tonight”, “When It Comes To Loving You”, “Cigarettes And Me” plus two brand new songs in “Dial One Up” and “Sunday Morning Heart”.  The Georgia-native co-wrote all six tracks.

The title track, “Now You Know” was just released on June 14th and is the song Langston used to open his sets on Luke Bryan’s Sunset Repeat Tour. Like Langston, it is very heavily influenced by rock n’ roll. In the song, he mentions all the things he does that make him a true southern boy, like fishing, hunting, drinking, etc.

I just go with the flow, with a whiskey and Coke / If you ever wondered how I roll / Well, now you know

The next two songs, “Dance Tonight” and “When It Comes To Loving You” are both slower, love songs. They were originally released as singles in February of 2019 and February of 2018, respectively. “Dance Tonight” is simply about sharing a dance with the person you love. In “When It Comes To Loving You”, Langston says nothing, not even a cold beer on a Friday night or watching college football with his grandpa, compares to a night with this girl.

“When it comes to loving you / All my walls fall down / Your touch in the dark lights a fire in my heart / That can’t be put out”

“Dial One Up” contains a blend of all different genres including country, pop, and rock. In this song, Langston sends a message to all the lonely girls out there that if they’re looking for a good time, dial his number. In the bridge, he mentions that if he has a good time tonight that he’ll be the one to call her tomorrow.

“I got you covered if you need a little crazy / We can watch the sunrise in the bed of this truck / If you want another late night, baby / I’ll be the one to dial one up”

The girl featured in “Sunday Morning Heart” leaves Langston in awe as he is amazed at how such a nice, sweet girl can tear up a Saturday night with the best of them. To him, the most impressive part is not how she can close down the bar but how she can put on a smile and be ready for church the next morning; her “Sunday morning heart” is his favorite thing about her.

“She’s got a Saturday night wild streak, and a sweet southern charm / and a Sunday morning heart”

“Cigarettes And Me” was originally released on his 2015, self-titled EP. This track was written for his father as Langston praises how he never gave up on him. Although the lyrics are the same, there were changes made to the song as some extra sounds were added, the electric guitar became more prevalent and he threw in a couple of transitional words like “oh yeah” and “come on”.

“All those junkyard parts that never fit / My daddy never quit / Cigarettes, Chevy trucks, and me”

The Sunset Repeat Tour wraps up today in Detroit as Langston also continues his headlining tour that ends November 30th. He will then hit the road with Morgan Wallen on his Whiskey Glasses Roadshow tour starting January 2nd. For tickets, head to his website.

NYCS First Impression: Old Dominion Release Self-Titled Album

Old Dominion

It has been two years since the phenomenon that is Old Dominion put out a new record. After a widely successful headlining tour earlier this year, making a stop at New York City’s Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden on May 25th, 2019, the band’s self-titled album has finally been released in its entirety, and well, it was definitely worth the wait.

The record is full of twelve well-rounded tracks, covering the whole gamut of emotions and of course, showcasing their stellar songwriting. The band promised via Twitter, back when their album date was released that the record would be different, stating, “We pushed ourselves to be more raw and vulnerable with our songwriting on this album. It’s a side of us we haven’t shown as blatantly on our projects,” they lamented, setting the tone for the impressive tracklist.

The lead single, “Make It Sweet,” encourages listeners to make the most of life; despite, the negative. The track reached the top spot on the charts, making it the ACM Vocal Group of the Year’s seventh career number one. Its rhythmic tempo is just as charming as the clever lyrics. Transitioning into “Smooth Sailing,” a song with an air of ease and a beachy vibe, Old Dominion show off their songwriting yet again. They continue to keep things positive, without living in a dreamland, singing about looking to get back on track in this catchy tune.

“Come hell or high water / The sun’s gonna shine / Might not be tomorrow / But I know I’m going to find smooth sailing / Watch me sail away”

Old Dominion

Mike Spotz (@illkoncept) for NYCountry Swag

Both fan-favorite ballad “One Man Band” and one of the pre-released tracks, “My Heart is a Bar” are definitely cut from the same cloth. The former expresses one’s desire to be in a relationship. The group uses their perspective as musicians to write a heartfelt and emotional tune. “My Heart is a Bar” is equally as profound, but for a more melancholy reason. Lead singer, Matthew Ramsey compares his broken heart to a bar; lamenting that people use him until they feel better and then, they pick up and leave. Although a heartbreaking sentiment, the song is one of the best on the new project.

“My heart is a bar and I’m closing it down / So find somewhere else to get drunk in this town / I’m tired of being a shoulder and never having one around”

Next up, the upbeat track “Never Be Sorry” aims to remind people who have had their heart broken that falling in love is never something to apologize for. Breakups can be messy, but we can and should learn to cherish the memories and the lessons learned from our previous relationships. In the same vein, they sing about finally getting it, now that the relationship has ended in “Hear You Now”. After all, is said and done, they finally hear their ex loud and clear, as all the things she said finally came true. If nothing else, these two songs teach us tough lessons, inspiring us to grow from the hardships. It’s safe to say Old Dominion’s unique talent shines on these tracks.

For fans who love Old Dominion’s hard-hitting and cheeky stuff, the self-titled release has that too. “Midnight Mess Around” fits the bill. The song, written with the late Andrew Dorff, is straight to the point. Even though it’s a new vibe for the band, the song’s lyrics will resonate with fans, who love their hits “Hotel Key” and “Snapback,” except this song is sexy and racy in all the best ways. If you’re looking for another song that’s full of clever innuendos and flirty lyrics, look no further than track number seven, “Do It With Me.”

“I’ll Roll” and “American Style” both have that traditional mixed with modern country vibes. Laced with confidence throughout, the former is a laid-back song about just living life and letting it ride. The band doesn’t put much pressure on making decisions in this unique bop. Meanwhile, the latter, “American Style” is sure to be a staple at live shows. It starts with a fun drum instrumental and we can picture fans singing the lyrics back to the guys on stage.

“Rock and roll / and peace and love / and breaking in your baseball glove / Ain’t ever going to go out of American style”

Nearing the end of the record, “Paint the Grass Green” is one of our favorites, standing out for its romantic notions and killer displays of affirmations. Ramsey’s delivery as he pours heart out into the lyrics, highlight a man willing to give his love everything and anything to keep her happy.

Just like “Paint the Grass Green,” the final song off the new record is one of the most lyrically-driven songs of the year. “Some People Do” is arguably the most vulnerable cut by Old Dominion yet, showcasing a whole new level of artistry for the songwriters and artists. The song questions humanity’s ability to change and learn from their mistakes. Although ultimately a break-up song, the track poses philosophical questions that will keep you thinking and playing the song again and again.

“Some people quit drinking too much / And some people quit lying / Some people decide to grow up / But it’s never good timing / Most wouldn’t forget / What I put you through / But I’m here tonight / Hoping some people do”

Prior to album release day, the group shared via social media, “Part of our job as songwriters is, to tell the truth, even if it’s hard to go there.” They did not disappoint, and this sentiment is the common thread that links all the songs together in this cohesive, heartwarming, and creative record.

Luke Bryan Reveals New Single “What She Wants Tonight”

Luke Bryan What She Wants Tonight

Platinum-selling superstar Luke Bryan has all of country music swooning over his latest release “What She Wants Tonight.” This track is his second release to a forthcoming album and a follow up to his chart-topping #1 Billboard track “Knockin’ Boots.” Bryan shows a distinctive, stripped-down side to his music with the steamy “What She Wants Tonight.” Co-written with Ross Copperman, Hillary Lindsey, and John Nite, the song details a man fascinated by an empowered woman who knows what she wants. After a late-night out of “drinking every drop of Kentucky dry,” he places the rest of the evening in the woman’s hands.

The gifted singer’s infectious hooks paired with an uncensored dramatic vibe sets up the chorus perfectly, “Don’t even know what she’ll do but she does it / Palm of her hand I’m hers in a blink of an eye / She don’t take no and I love / She gets what she wants and I get to be what she wants tonight / I get to be what she wants tonight.” Bryan proves his evolution as a songwriter and artistry by changing up his vocals on this track, even including a sensuous falsetto at the very end of the song. The progression Bryan is showing is undeniably impressive, it is no surprise “What She Wants Tonight” is the most added track to country radio.

Known as one of the most exciting and energetic entertainers, Bryan recently wrapped up his Sunset Repeat Tour having played at over 36 stadiums across the country. He will kick off next year with his fifth sold-out destination event Crash My Playa, with three jam-packed days of music and entertainment. In the meantime, fans will be eagerly awaiting news of when his seventh studio album will be released.
