Lauren Alaina may think she belongs on a farm instead of in the ballroom but she brought her Georgia roots to Los Angeles last night for the Dancing with the Stars season 28 premiere. A video introduction showed her meeting her partner, Gleb Savchenko for the first time. “I feel like I’m going to prom and I’m waiting for my date to get here,” Alaina told the camera.
Dancing the Cha-Cha to “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” by none other than country superstar, Shania Twain, Alaina dazzled on the dance floor in a green costume with a large brown belt and plenty of sparkles. She had tears in her eyes as she came off the floor and explained just how nervous she was before making her Dancing with the Stars debut. “I was praying and feeling like I might throw up,” she laughed.
The judges were impressed, giving Lauren a score of 19, the third-highest total and described her performance as “very polished” and calling her a “sultry southern belle.” Scores will carry over to next Monday when live voting begins. The songstress had plenty of people cheering her on as the camera panned to her close family and friends clapping as she got her scores. Also in the audience was country music radio host and last year’s champion, Bobby Bones who posted a sweet message to his friend shortly after her performance.
Click here to watch her full performance. Only time will tell how the singer-songwriter will do this season, continue to follow along on ABC on Monday nights at 8 PM EST.

Tonight, Midland kicks off their Let It Roll Tour in New York City but before playing for thousands of fans at Terminal 5, the trio joined a small group of radio winners at New York’s Country 94.7 studios for an Up Close & Country performance. Radio personality and DJ Katie Neal welcomed the band to the intimate performance space and discussed their two CMA Award nominations, for Vocal Group of the Year as well as New Artist of the Year. “It’s a very cool thing, we are honored to be thrown in the mix with all of those people who have been doing it for a while,” Cameron Duddy explained. Even going on to say they are the youngest band to be nominated, not meaning by age but by how long they have been around.
Neal also congratulated two of the three band members, Jess, who welcomed a baby into his family this past year and Mark, who has gotten engaged and will become a dad very soon. Throughout the interview and the performance, the trio’s dry sense of humor had fans engaged, thoroughly enjoying their back and forth banter.
After the brief chat, the boys of Midland kicked off their performance with one of our favorite songs from their latest album, Let It Roll, “Playboys“. Their traditional country sound resonated throughout the small theater as the lucky audience members tapped their feet to the infectious, clever tune. They showcased songs from Let It Roll including “Put The Hurt On Me”, “Fast Hearts and Slow Towns” and their current single “Mr. Lonely”. Of course, they had to end with their debut single and first number one at country radio, “Drinkin’ Problem”. Head to our Instagram to check out exclusive clips of the evening.
Not only did the studio audience enjoy watching the trio bring honky-tonk music to New York City, they got to meet the band after and they were delighted to find out that they all also had won tickets to tonight’s epic tour kick off. To grab your tickets click here.

King Calaway does it again with the release of an Amazon Original cover of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One”. Easily one of the most recognized songs of the ’90s, the band is taking a risk choosing such an iconic song and superstar to cover however we think it definitely paid off. The song remains true to the rich sound and style of the classic Shania tune, while seemingly creating a brand new style that’s becoming known as King Calaway’s personal brand. The band has a magic strategy of creating music that rings true to all of country music’s fans, while simultaneously inventing a new sound in music. Simon Dumas of the band said, “We chose ‘You’re Still The One’ because we feel it’s a timeless song that has the ability to entertain every generation. We worked tirelessly to make this track our own while also paying tribute to its origins, and of course, we had to shower it in King Calaway harmonies!” They did just that but the heart of Shania is still beating through the entire song.
With the release of their album Rivers just a few weeks away, this only furthers their attention and addition of new fans. If you can reach Shania’s fans, some of the most loyal fans in the industry, you’re well on your way to a whole new base of followers. These guys take their diversity in origin and perspective to bring together a cohesive group of fun-loving, music-making personalities that will surely win the hearts of country music.

“I just became obsessed with the city and just the energy that circulated Nashville, and so I went home from that trip, and was pretty much like once I graduate high school, I”m going to Nashville, Tennessee.”
Our Swag Spotlight artist this week just released her newest project The Days EP last Friday, which is chock full of stellar songwriting and sonically beautiful songs, including one of our favorites “Ten Year Town”. On top of that, the blossoming songstress recently opened up for Lori McKenna and most recently, performed her heart out at Radio City Music Hall, opening up for Maren Morris on her sold-out headlining tour. We got a chance to chat with Whitters about her musical influences, her journey to where she is now, and of course what she has in store for us going into the rest of this year and 2020.
Growing up in small-town Iowa, radio greatly impacted her love for music. She grew up listening to artists like The Spice Girls and The Dixie Chicks. Whitters shared, “I was on my own little planet in Iowa. I grew up on country radio, and at the time, it was all these really powerful females, and they all had a point of view and perspective, and I wanted to be in a girl band. I remember asking my guidance counselor, how do you do music because I just had no idea how that worked,” she recalls. “He asked me who my favorite artists were and I said The Dixie Chicks. And he was like ‘ya know they wrote their own songs.’ That was where I learned that I needed to write songs, so then I got a guitar, and I started writing.”
After playing gigs in her hometown wherever she could and a life-changing trip to Nashville, when she was 16 years old, Whitters went on to graduate from high school and made the move 9 hours away from her hometown to Music City. “Nashville was kinda like my crash course into the industry and how it works. I didn’t know anyone when I moved here, and I just kinda started getting on the internet and contacting bookers and showing up at the bar and being like “hey can I play?!” I really had to feel my way through the dark, but being young and ignorant to this business, I was able kinda to make mistakes, and feel my way through it without having too much of an idea of how it all works,” she explained.
Like many artists, the singer-songwriter had to persevere through many struggles to make it in the industry. Although she’s been dedicated to her craft for 12 years now, she’s had times where it felt like her dreams weren’t going to come true. As fate would have it, this led her to write her song, “Ten Year Town,” which revitalized her career and reignited her drive to chase her dreams.
“I kinda felt very broken hearted and kinda sick of Nashville honestly. Two years ago I was coming up on my ten-year mark, and I was looking at my life and looking at my career, and feeling like ‘is it the end of this chapter for me’?” she tells us. “I had to do a lot of internal work and tune out a lot of voices that I had in my head, and just go make a record that I love and so ya know, getting to do that and seeing this response to it, it has been so rewarding and just like good for my soul, I keep saying I needed to find the music and magic in Nashville again.”
Whitters wrote “Ten Year Town” with the extraordinary Brandy Clark, after being turned down by many other co-writers. The two powerful women created a relatable, yet deeply personal tune. According to the Whitters, the song felt like therapy at the time, but two years later, it became the first song on her upcoming record. She agreed with us that the ending lyric “This next song could turn it all around / I’m twelve years into a ten year town” was one of the ‘aha’ moments in the writing process, adding, “The fact that we threw out that line- it ends on the hope that we all when we’re in our co-writes and in our sessions. That’s just the crux of the dreamer like hanging on and hope that the next set or the next day or the next song or the next whatever can turn anything around.”
Ironically, the success of that poignant song has opened doors for the songstress, and her career is finally taking off. Throughout this interview, we learned quickly that Whitters is wise beyond her years and primed for success, due to her can’t quit attitude and unique talent. We cannot wait to see what she has in store for the new year and look forward to the release of her full-length record The Dream, which will be related at the top of 2020.

In honor of kicking off the Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars tour, Miranda Lambert and her girl gang that will be joining her on the road released a cover of Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around & Fell In Love”. The new version of the 1975 classic song features Maren Morris, Elle King, Ashley McBryde, Tenille Townes, and Caylee Hammack – all of whom will open for Lambert on select dates.
This talented group of women trade off verses, all harmonizing on the chorus and tell the story of a bachelor who fell for one special girl. The video below shows the recording session when all of the ladies got together to create this magic. We love seeing female artists prove that even though each is hustling their way through the industry, just trying to be heard, they continue to support and love one another.
“The girls on the Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Tour can sing their asses off,” said Lambert in a press release. “There’s something crazy about seeing these artists with a new fire in their eyes. It reignites your own flame. I’m so excited to watch them every night on tour.”
One of our favorite parts of country concerts is when the headliner graciously lends a part of their setlist to welcome back the openers and direct support, giving a chance for the entire venue to witness their talent. We can only hope that this collaboration will support that on the Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars tour this fall which launches tonight with back-to-back shows at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT.

From the first time we spoke to Renee Blair for a Swag Spotlight feature, we knew she had something special. Her St. Louis roots shine brightly through her music and today, she released two brand new songs, “Summadat” and “Wearin’ It Well”. Both tracks sonically channel the modern country vibe, with pop influences. As listeners gear up for another warm weekend across the country, the former is “easy, breezy” and perfect to blast with your windows down. The latter is empowering, an almost fake-it-til-you-make-it moment, a story about a broken heart powering through. “Wearin’ It Well” is for anyone who felt like staying home in sweats crying over a situation but decided to live their life instead.
“I’ve got my Covergirl coverin’ up the tears that I’ve cried / I’ve got a stranger dancin’ with his hands on your favorite Levis / I’ve got a heart still broken I’ve been going through hell but tonight, I’m going out and I’m wearin’ it, wearin’ it well”
“I think it is a huge testament to where music is right now, it’s becoming very cross-genre. I think it’s awesome,” she says of one of her main influences growing up, Nelly working with Florida Georgia Line. “The fans are the best judgment, they just like good music and they don’t care what you call it and I think it is a great way to just bring everyone together.” Blair, who co-wrote both tracks continues to change the game, releasing smartly written lyrics and tracks that beg for repeat spins.
Check out more from Renee Blair in the video below when we caught up with her for a Live Swag Session back in January 2019, where she performed “Better Off”, “Me Tonight” and chatted about her influences, songwriting, and future plans.

Singer-songwriter, Brett Young released the final track off his The Acoustic Sessions EP on today (9/13). It contains five songs from his most recent album, Ticket to L.A. Young’s current single to country radio, “Catch”, the lead single, “Here Tonight” (featuring Charles Kelley), “Don’t Want To Write This Song” (featuring Sean McConnell), “Chapters” (featuring Gavin Degraw), and the title track, “Ticket to L.A.”
The acoustic version of “Catch” has a totally different vibe than the one you hear on the radio. The piano is emphasized making it more of a ballad. The lyrics stayed the same however as the song is about an unintended relationship forming between two people at a bar. The man just wanted to have a nice, chill time with his friends before he caught glimpse of this girl. This track was penned by Young, Ross Copperman, and Ashley Gorley.
Young slowed down his fourth number-one single, “Here Tonight” for this EP and added Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley, who co-wrote the song with Young, Ben Caver, and Justin Ebach. The song is about a man who wants this exact moment with his girl to last forever. Kelley takes the second verse and the two team up to make the second chorus sound even more beautiful than the original.
Just when you thought “Don’t Wanna Write This Song” couldn’t sound more melancholy, Young releases the acoustic version of it. This song is Ticket to L.A.’s “Mercy”; it is the most heart wrenching track on the album as it’s about a man having a tough time moving past the death of his wife. Sean McConnell’s vocals feature in the background of this song, unlike on the original recording. McConnell co-wrote the song with Young and Zach Crowell.
Young kept his childhood inspiration, Gavin DeGraw on the acoustic version of the next song. “Chapters” is based on Young’s true story. He was the star pitcher on his high school and college baseball teams before a serious arm injury ended his career. Luckily for Young, he was blessed with other extraordinary talents, singing, and songwriting. Young wrote this with DeGraw and Copperman.
Just released today, “Ticket to L.A.” is about how two strangers get to know each other in an airport due to a delayed flight and quickly hit it off. She’s headed to L.A., not far from Young’s hometown. Young sings the verses in this acoustic recording with hardly any instruments backing him. Young, Crowell and Jon Nite wrote this song.

We love when a strong female artist delivers a record with an undeniably unique perspective and songs with the depth and emotion that we so crave. Rising artist, Hailey Whitters delivered just that with the first part of her newest project entitled The Days.
The EP opens up with arguably the most prolific song off the record, “Ten Year Town.” Our Managing Editor Christina picked this song as her ‘Song of the Month’ back in March, and it’s been one of our favorites ever since. Whitters wrote the song with the exceptional Brandy Clark, during a time in her life, where she was falling out of love with Nashville, after a decade of trying to ‘make it’ in the music industry.
She shared in a recent press release that she was tired of trying to “water herself down to fit in,” and that she was “craving something that [was] raw, real, and imperfect.” Those statements embody the opening track to a ’t.” Although highly personal, the track is as relatable as it gets for anyone who is feeling lost in their current situation. Last Friday evening during her opening slot on Maren Morris’ GIRL The World Tour stop at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Whitters said “To anyone out there tonight hanging on to the tail end of a dream, and wondering if you should just give it up…don’t,” before playing the track for the audience who hung on to every last word.
“Lesser fools woulda given up / They don’t go for broke like a dreamer does / Gotta get back up when you get knocked down / I’m twelve years into a ten year town.”
Next up, the title track is rhythmic and sonically-enticing. Drawing inspiration from her childhood and all the moving moments since, Whitters sings about all the little things that make up this adventure we call life. She flips the script and focuses on the little moments that we sometimes let pass us by. “The other day it hit me like a hammer / that you can’t get back those moments that really matter.”
“Red Wine & Blue” is a bluesy slow-jam, where Whitters emotes how it feels to go through a break-up, while “Dream Girl” is a more upbeat track with an 80s vibe that uplifts women, encouraging them to know their worth and remember that, “you’re someone else’s dream girl” and to “never settle for less than what you need girl.”
In “Loose Strings” Whitters relies on her gritty, yet beautiful vocals. With a simple instrumentation, she reveals her truth in the breathtaking song. The track was written by Whitters with a team of A-list female songwriters, including Lori McKenna, Hillary Lindsay, Nicolle Gaylon, and Brandy Clark.
Rounding out the expressive record is “Heartland.” The final song on the first part of this project was inspired by Whitters’ Midwest upbringing. It’s romantic, nostalgic, and catchy. The play on words is simple, yet effective, as she sings about letting her “heart- land in the middle of nowhere” and despite life not going the way it would have if she stayed in her smalltown, she knows that she can always fall back on her roots.
As Whitters says, “this is the first record that feels 100 percent me. It’s a time capsule of my time in Nashville and coming to terms with dreams and what they mean to you,” and The Days is truly just that. It’s an enticing project that makes you feel like you know exactly who she is, which is both inspiring and makes you want to root for her success.
We recently caught Whitters in her opening spot on tour with Maren Morris and Kassi Ashton at the iconic Radio City Music Hall. Check out some of our highlights from the show here. She will continue to play shows on ‘GIRL The World Tour’, through September. In October, the songstress will open up for singer-songwriter, Brent Cobb. For tickets and more information, head to haileywhitters.com.
The Days EP is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.
The Hero Collectionby NYCountry Swag is inspired by the men and women of the Fire, Police and Military Departments across the country. A portion of sales from each purchase is donated to different foundations that support our heroes. We are dedicated to honoring their service and remembering their sacrifice.
