Jason Aldean Reveals Next Track From ‘9’ Titled “Dirt We Were Raised On”

Jason Aldean Dirt We Were Raised On

ACM Artist of the Decade Jason Aldean released a new single titled “Dirt We Were Raised On” from his highly anticipated ninth studio album today, (Sept 27). While not a complete departure from Aldean’s previous singles, it’s definitely fresh-sounding.

“People buy albums with eight songs for 10 bucks now, but with ‘9′ it’s like you’re getting two whole albums at once,” Aldean shared in a press release. “I want fans to feel like they’re getting more than they bargained for and I want it to be something they listen to from top to bottom, and never hit skip…or thumbs down or whatever.”

The track starts with a complimenting acoustic and electric guitar and leads to a natural full-band kick in. The electric guitar almost serves as a baseline for the verses, which makes the song even more memorable. Aldean has always had a very signature sound, classic rock and modern country infused into one, and fans always know what to expect.

Lyrically, the song is all about nostalgia. “Yeah, we drank on it, cranked some Hank on it”. The verses are all about what any small-town boy and his friends did on that dirt road. It’s detailed enough that it feels personal to Aldean, but universal enough that so many can place themselves in the song.

In each chorus of the song, he sings, “We’ll never be too far gone from the dirt we were raised on”. It’s almost like he’s reminding himself that he’ll never be too proud to reminisce about his past and want to go back to where he came from. What strikes us most about this song is its production and instrumentation. Aldean could have easily fallen into a formulaic radio-ready song, but he didn’t. He had the listener focus on section changes in a song that’s 3 minutes and 36 seconds long.

Aldean’s ninth studio album 9 is out November 22nd. Catch him on his upcoming “We Back” tour with special guests Morgan Wallen and Riley Green.

NYCS First Impression Kalie Shorr ‘Open Book’

Kalie Shorr Open Book

If you’re looking for a record that is honest, raw, and relatable with a delightfully unique perspective, look no further than Kalie Shorr’s debut record Open Book. The new project gives us a front row seat into the songstress’ life experiences, her thoughts, and her feelings, all wrapped up with pretty melodies and enticing vocals. Shorr delivers an impressive melding of genres while remaining true to her songwriter roots, co-writing and co-producing each and every one of the 13 tracks.

The record begins with the essence of an old-western instrumental in “Too Much To Say,” but it is the opening line that packs quite the punch. The track sets the tone for the rest of the album, as Shorr exclaims in the opening lyrics, “I’ve never been worse, thanks for asking / Is it making you nervous, all this honesty?!,” only to add later that she’s an “open book.” She reminisces again in “Big Houses,” a cut that comes later on the tracklist that depicts positive moments with her mother, while still having a somber layer of wishing to be anywhere but ‘here’.

“Escape” and “Messy” follow the first song. The former is the listener’s first introduction to her demons. She unapologetically attests to how her struggles in her childhood led her to seek love in the wrong places and to find her own version of an escape. She sings, “Everybody needs an escape / And mine was leaving.” The later also shows off Shorr’s vocals. In “Messy,” the singer-songwriter plays with her vocal range while seeking answers as to why her relationship ended the way it did.

Shorr continues to explore how she felt in a former relationship in “The One.” Between the clever wordplay and tempo-changes, “The One” is a stand-out song on the tracklist. For different reasons, “F U Forever” is arguably one of the most impressive songs off the project. In the upbeat jam, the songstress empowers women to wear their heartbreak and vulnerability like a badge of honor.

Her impressive use of wordplay and expressive singing is apparent again in “Alice in Wonderland.” Besides being cleverly titled, the song is another explorative track with strong imagery about wanting to escape from a bad relationship. Relating the song to the movie ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is not only brilliant but reminds us all of our vulnerabilities. “Wonder if you’re good enough / Or if you’re the only one / You wonder if he’s lying again.”

As we delve deeper into Shorr’s masterpiece, she openly shares her grieving process with us in “The World Keeps Spinning.” In memory of her late sister, the singer laments about how hard it is to get through a day, when you lose someone you love, “The sky didn’t even have the decency to cry / And that damn sun / Still found a way to shine / When my heartaches hitting / I think it’s kinda cruel that the world keeps spinning.” The powerful ballad is for anyone that has ever experienced loss.

After tugging at our heartstrings, Shorr switches gears and delivers three more upbeat tracks that fans of recent Taylor Swift and Alanis Morissette would love. In “Gatsby,” she sings the sarcastic sentiment, “people like me because I’m happy.” The song rivals the Morissette classic “Ironic.” As for, “Thank God You’re a Man,” the play of tempos feel like Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” or “Red” by Swift. It will have you singing along after just one listen. Finally, “Vices” will have you relating to Shorr’s struggles with her “vices” and hopefully help you to give yourself compassion for not always making the ‘right’ decisions.

Continuing to play with the gamut of emotions, Shorr shares her journey through heartbreak in her current radio single “Lullaby”. The ethereal song was inspired by the end of a six-year relationship. She takes us through the process of moving on both lyrically and rhythmically. The beautiful track begins with just Shorr’s voice shining through an acoustic guitar evolving into a full instrumental backing track. She sings “This is the sound of letting it go / of learning to sleep and your sleeping alone / of figuring it out how to love when you don’t.

The record ends with “Angry Butterfly.” The obscure titled song begins with heavier guitars and polarizing vocals. Shorr admits to being a ‘walking contradiction,’ relishing in the “beauty in the breakdown.” It’s the perfect way to bookmark a thoughtful and innovative debut.

Open Book is a catalog of songs for the individual, who is looking to find healing in the music. As Shorr shared in a recent press release, “These songs are like three minute journal entries,” adding, “I’m happy to have the freedom to share my truth on this album.” Shorr’s refreshing perspective is one that will surely resonate with music fans across many genres, but her niche at perfectly speaking her truth, while still standing up for women is arguably what will keep her successful in the industry for a long time to come.

Lauren Davidson Releases Optimistic “Soaking Up Every Second”

Swag Spotlight alum and local artist, Lauren Davidson, is back with a new single, “Soaking Up Every Second”, a positive anthem to live life to the fullest, never letting a single moment pass you by.

Written by Davidson and Adam McDonough “Soaking Up Every Second” starts with guitar and drums to a tune that will easily have you on your feet in no time. The New Jersey native quickly joins in with her astounding vocals, once again showing off what vast range she has. While the track is upbeat and fun, it shares a powerful message.   It reminds us that we shouldn’t wish our lives away by continuously counting down the days until the next big thing. Instead, we should be enjoying every second of the journey we are currently on, no matter where it may take us.

“I’ve been waiting at the station / But when the train comes I ain’t gonna take it / Life is rolling set in motion / But I’m gonna stop here in my tracks / I won’t wish away my life, waste away my time / I just want to make the most of where I’m headed /  I’m soaking up every second”

This is the second single released by Davidson this year, “Live Laugh Love” was released in May. While “Soaking Up Every Second” has a different tune from the rock-country anthem, they both share the similarity of showing off the singer-songwriter’s talent to cowrite powerful music.

Carly Pearce and Lee Brice Duet on “I Hope You’re Happy Now”

Carly Pearce Lee Brice

Carly Pearce, who was nominated for CMA Awards New Artist of the Year after such a successful year with singles “Every Little Thing” and newest release “Closer To You.” As she is putting the final touches on her sophomore album, Pearce released a sneak peek of her new song, “I Hope You’re Happy Now” which features country superstar, Lee Brice, earlier this week.

“I Hope You’re Happy Now” is a honey-soaked, whiskey-drenched track which makes for such a painfully truthful, raw, and real song. Written by Pearce herself alongside Luke Combs, Jonathan Singleton, and Randy Montana, the team wrote a song everyone can relate to.

The newest CMA nominee shared in a press release, “I am so excited to share such a personal part of my story with one of the best male vocalists in our format. Lee has the kind of gruff yet vulnerable quality to his sound that I envisioned for this duet and am grateful he agreed to join me.”

The song starts out with a classic country sound as Pearce and Brice’s vocals quickly fill the airwaves. With the opening lyrics stating, “I said I don’t love you a little too late / But I guess there ain’t ever a right time,” this song is intriguing off the bat. Moving into the chorus, “Well I guess you found what you were looking for / I guess my heart ain’t worth it anymore // I’m a wreck, I’m a mess / And I ain’t got nothing left / So I hope you’re happy now,” it speaks to a situation we have either been in personally or seen someone we know go through.

The two shared a short video on their Instagrams earlier this week for fans to listen to and reading the comments, we can tell people were very excited about this duet. Hearing both great sets of vocals, this song will be one that hits you hard. “It was an absolute pleasure working with Carly on this track,” said Lee. “She has such a beautiful and powerful voice and definitely has a huge career ahead of her.” Take a look at the lyric video below!

Pearce is currently on the road with Jason Aldean’s Ride All Night Tour while Brice is headlining shows across the country up until the Christmas season.

NYCS First Impression: Jon Pardi ‘Heartache Medication’

Heartache Medication Jon Pardi

Jon Pardi’s third studio album Heartache Medication is finally here, and there is a reason why it was named one of Billboard’s Most Anticipated Albums. Cowritten and coproduced by the California native, the album is filled with fun upbeat songs about drinking, a few ballads, a fiddle, and Pardi’s old school twang. It is everything we could have wanted and more.

In a recent press release the artist shared his excitement for the album, “I’m really proud of this record. I’m really proud of all the session players, and the songwriters that delivered great songs. I wrote half the record and Nashville stepped in and wrote the other half, and I’m very proud of that.”

The album starts with the song “Old Hat.” Different from the other songs on the album, this shows what kind of gentleman the singer-songwriter is. He questions what happened to the traditions of holding the door open for a girl. While interesting to start slow on the album, it does raise a powerful question of what happened to chivalry? The album picks up a little bit of speed with the title track “Heartache Medication”. While songs about heartache are typically sad, this is far from it as it begins with a fiddle. The first of many tracks about drinking, it’s a song about alcohol being the perfect medication to move on after a breakup.

“Nobody Leaves a Girl Like That” talks about the girl that you never want to leave as she hits every checkbox. If you do leave her and break her heart of gold, it will be a big mistake. One of the more somber songs on the album, “Ain’t Always the Cowboy” shows a more vulnerable side of the artist.  The track shares the message that isn’t always the guys’ fault who ends the relationship. Women can choose to go their separate way too.

We all have a love/hate relationship with alcohol, and for Pardi, it’s no different. “Me and Jack” will have everyone up on their feet, especially with the fiddle solos throughout the song. It’s a comical track as it talks about Pardi’s relationship with Jack Daniels. How it turns him into a different person, as it had caused him to miss work, fight, curse, forget what happened the night before, and even landing him in jail.

“Don’t Blame it on the Whiskey” features Pardi’s friend and fellow country artist, Lauren Alaina. Cowritten by stars Eric Church and Miranda Lambert, the ballad shares the message that you can’t blame the issues of your relationship on a drunken fight. People usually tell their honest thoughts when drunk, so you get down to the bottom of what really caused the argument and decide if you should be together or not. In our most recent chat with Pardi, he told us all about this duet.  “I knew me and Lauren sang great together, we hosted the ACM Honors together and we sang a lot,” he says of the decision to add a female voice. “She’s got a really soulful voice on this track, she can belt it, Lauren Alaina’s got some vocal pipes but it’s a little softer and it’s really pretty”.

Photo by Justin Aharoni for NYCountry Swag

Named after an old-fashioned western term, meaning to get drunk, “Tied One On” continues to show Pardi’s appreciation for old school country music and continuing with the drinking theme, “Oughta Know That” is relatable to anyone who has stayed out later than expected on a work or school night and drank more than they were planning on.

“Tequila Little Time” brings out the California in Pardi. It’ starts with the playing of trumpets and overall has a laid back vibe, sharing the message is it’s ok to forget the past, have fun, and get to know someone over a drink of tequila. “Buy That Man a Beer” shows appreciation is for every hardworking guy out there. “Call Me Country” is a song honoring all of Pardi’s country music heroes and how the genre isn’t the same as it once was. During our interview, he said ““It’s more there are a lot of influences where I grew up on listening to Brooks and Dunn, Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Mark Chestnutt, all kinds of sounds on there, that’s all blended together to where it’s me, it’s brand new sounding but it’s got a little remembrance of a different time.”

The album ends with the track “Starlight” which was the perfect choice. It’s a song honoring those who Pardi has lost in his life. While it’s sad that they are no longer with us, the artist knows that they are shining down on him and watching over him as his career continues to flourish. Overall, Heartache Medication shows how talented Pardi truly is as he mixes his love for old school country with the contemporary sound of today.

The album’s release party is right here in New York City at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom with special guest Tyler Rich. If you aren’t able to make it, Pardi will be heading out on the  Heartache Medication tour starting with two sold-out shows at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Find out if he is coming to a city near you here.

To keep up with Jon Pardi follow him on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

10 Great Country Songs For The Fall Season

It is officially Fall and while we’ll miss the beach, pool days, and summer concert season, we’re ready for football, bonfires and sweater weather! Here are the best country songs for the fall season to play while you pick apples, and sip your pumpkin spice latte.

1) “The Boys of Fall” – Kenny Chesney

When you think of fall, you think of those Friday night football games where the whole town comes together. That’s exactly what “The Boys of Fall” is about. Written by Casey Beathard and Dave Turnball, it’s the perfect song to listen to before heading into the game.

“And it’s knocking heads and talking trash / It’s slinging mud and dirt and grass /  It’s I got your number, I got your back / When your back’s against the wall / You mess with one man, you got us all / The boys of fall”

2) “Harvest Time” – Luke Bryan

Written by Luke Bryan and Rodney Clawson, “Harvest Time” shows appreciation for the small town farmers and the work they put in day in and day out during their busiest time of year.

“It’s harvest time / Time to bring it on in / Pay the loans down / Fill the diesel tank up / And make another round / There’s a big red moon coming up in the sky / Combine’s cutting in a staggered line / The only time of year / We missed the church bell’s chime / It’s harvest time”

3) “Here’s to the Farmer” – Luke Bryan

Luke Bryan created the farm tour, which occurs each fall, so it’s no surprise he has two songs on the list! Written by Bryan, Michael Carter, and Richard Chase McGill, this is another song that shows the hard work that farmers put in for us to have the perfect harvest crops that we look forward to each year.

“Here’s to the farmer that plants the field in the spring / That turn from green to the harvest honey / Hold one up for the banker downtown / That got him on his feet with handshake money / Here’s to the farmer’s wife / That loves him every night”

4) “A Little More Summertime” – Jason Aldean

Summer is a hard season to say goodbye to. Written by Jenny Flowers, Tony Martin, and Wendell Mobley, “A Little More Summertime” shares that message, specifically wishing a summer romance would be more than a fling. Who hasn’t wanted that to happen?

“If that sun would have just /  Hung up in that sky /  Just a little bit, yeah / Just a little bit longer / She might have stayed forever / And never ever left those arms / If only I  / Had a little more summertime”

5) “Autumn’s Not That Cold” – Lorrie Morgan

Written by Max D. Barnes and Skip Ewing, “Autumn’s Not That Cold” is a great reminder that even though your summer romance may have ended, you’re going to be ok.

“I’m almost feeling guilty / That the hurt’s not taking hold / Guess I’m not that lonesome /  And Autumn’s not that cold”

6) “The Long Way” – Brett Eldredge

Fall foliage is quite the scene to see and what better way to enjoy it than taking your significant other to your hometown to see it? Written by Brett Eldredge and Matt Rogers, “The Long Way” tells that story a d it’s the perfect song to listen to on your road trip.

“I’d love to see just where your daddy met your momma / Your hand-me-down ’99 Impala / Show me the field you danced in Clover / The harvest in October / When the leaves fall from the sky just like a Sunday drive”

7) “Home Game” – Cole Swindell

No matter if it’s high school, college, or the NFL, football is a big part of fall. Written by Aaron Eshuis, Brandon Lay, and Heather Morgan, “Home Game” tells the whole story from the tailgating cheering, to even falling in love.

“At the home game, we’d rock\ That small town fame in the parking lot\ All the pretty girls yelling go Big Blue\ Best part never made the front page news”

8) “Take Back Home Girl” – Chris Lane featuring Tori Kelly

While fall is a popular time for relationships to end, it’s also a popular time to fall in love. Written by David Garcia, Hillary Lindsey, and Josh Miller, “Take Back Home Girl” is a song about realizing the person you’re dating is someone you want to take back home to attend that Friday night football game and meet your family and friends.

“You’re the kind I wanna take a ride with / Sit by on a Friday night / In the stadium lights, side by side / Everybody in the bleachers, they all gon’ want to meet ya / From my teachers to my preacher, my little crowd pleaser”

9) “Unforgettable” – Thomas Rhett

Written by Rhett, Ashley Glenn Gorley, Jesse Frasure, and Shane McAnally, “Unforgettable” may not be about football or the harvest, but it’s is a fun song about meeting your significant in the fall, October 14th to be exact.

“It was the 14th of October / And that t-shirt off your shoulder / I was drunk and you were sober / And you said “yeah, right” / We were talkin’ for a minute / Then some guy tried to cut in / You took my hand and you pretended / Like I was your guy”

10) “1, 2 Many” – Luke Combs featuring Brooks and Dunn

While this may not be a song about fall, “1, 2 Many” is the perfect song to listen to during your football tailgate or fall bonfire. It’s upbeat and relatable as it tells the story of having one too many alcoholic beverages.

“By half past 10 I’m half past tipsy\ And quarter to 12, man I done had plenty\ The countdown’s on when the first beer hits me\ 5-4-3-2-1 too many”

Lena Stone Debuts Latest Feel-Good Single “Hotel”

One of our Swag Spotlights, Lena Stone debuted her new single “Hotel,” and it is the latest feel-good anthem, encouraging everyone to live their life to its fullest. The Massachusetts native is a singer-songwriter that is certainly making a name for herself in Nashville and in country music. Rolling Stone dubbed her artistry “smartly written contemporary pop-country with a little sugar and plenty of spice.” “Hotel” is co-written by Stone and Adam Wood, and the catchy, easy-going song is infectious.

With “Hotel,” Stone urges us all to leave our baggage behind and hit the road and forget all that is going on in our lives and simply enjoy it. In the chorus, Stone’s fresh vocals and lyrics allow us all escape life with, “Take it to the hotel, roll up at the Westin / Bellboys checking us out while we check-in/Glass elevator to the penthouse/Start emptying that minibar fridge out / We’ll trade in these clothes for white fluffy robes / Like queens of a king-sized bed / It’s just for one night but hey that’s alright / Leave your baggage at home and let’s take it to the hotel.”

“Hotel” is the second release from Stone’s upcoming project and she is keeping the momentum going and is giving fans every reason to be excited and anticipate what she has in store for us early next year with the release of her EP.

NYCountry Swag’s Hero Collection Goes Orange for Leukemia Awareness

One of the most rewarding things we have had the opportunity to do with the NYCountry Swag brand is creating a line of products that directly support our heroes. Originally inspired by the men and women of the Fire, Police and Military Departments, The Hero Collection allows us to help make a small difference, not only by encouraging fans and artists to wear the gear to show their support but also by donating a portion of all sales to different charities and foundations that assist our heroes across the country.

It’s important to us that we use our platform to raise awareness and spotlight different organizations that fund our every day heroes.

During the month of September, NYCountry Swag’s Hero Collection is going orange to honor Cohen Children’s Medical Center in support of Leukemia Awareness Month.

We are offering exclusive ‘Orange Line’ swag for a limited time, and with each purchase from our Hero Collection, we will be donating a portion of all sales to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in honor of our dear friend, Anna O’Connor.

Anna was diagnosed with leukemia in 2010, spending much of her childhood years at Cohen Children’s. This April marks 7 years of remission for Anna! For the past 6 years, like a true hero, each holiday season Anna and her family host an annual toy drive to collect toys to give back to the hospital, continuously spreading her love, strength, and support to children fighting the disease.

Help us help Anna by raising awareness and support by purchasing and wearing your Orange Line Swag from our Hero Collection and let’s help Cohen Children’s Medical Center continue to provide world-class care and discover new ways to treat cancer and other serious illnesses.

Kalie Shorr Delivers New, Honest Girl-Power Anthem “F U Forever”

Kalie Shorr F U Forever

In the wake of anticipation for her debut album Open Book, out this Friday, songstress Kalie Shorr pre-released another one of the vulnerable tracks entitled “F U Forever.” The new song is intense, yet relatable, showing that Shorr is not afraid to speak her truth.

“F U Forever” is exactly what it sounds like- a deeply personal track about telling off an ex, who didn’t treat you right. Penned by Shorr with Candi Carpenter and Annie Wildgen, the song depicts a woman, who although she has gone through hardships, came out the other side even stronger and more connected to herself. The details of the lyrics showcase personal anecdotes from Shorr’s life. She admits to dealing with both abandonment issues and domestic violence in such a way that brings awareness but doesn’t victimize her even more. It is both powerful and courageous, a perfect anthem for women.

“Looks like my abandonment issues got the best of me again / Cause we should have never been together / Now I’m wearing your stupid ring on my pretty little middle finger / So I can say F U forever and ever”

For Shorr, this song is as real as it gets, and it’s a sneak peek of what we can expect from her upcoming debut record. “I’ve never been more excited or more afraid to put out music into the world. I’ve always written from a real place, but these songs are like three minute journal entries. Seeing them resonate means more than I ever realized it would,” she shared in a recent press release, adding, “I’m happy to have the freedom to share my truth on this album and especially on a song like ‘F U Forever.”

For a chance to hear some of her songs live, as well as, some awesome covers, join us for our Manhattan By Sail event on Friday, October 11th. If you can’t make it that night, but still want to experience an epic night of music, join us this Friday on the water for an epic night of music by talented newcomer, Baker Grissom.
