NYCS First Impression: Heather Morgan Releases Debut Album “Borrowed Heart”

Heather Morgan, "Borrowed Heart"

Heather Morgan, “Borrowed Heart”

Singer-songwriter Heather Morgan has released her highly anticipated debut album, Borrowed Heart.

The Texas native has had major success as a songwriter, penning numerous hits for artists like Brett Eldredge, Maren Morris, Kenny Chesney, Danielle Bradbery, and many more. Now, it’s time for Morgan to let her voice shine and create a name for herself as a performing artist.

While searching for her own sound, Morgan spent many long days and late nights in the writing room, but it wasn’t until a spontaneous soul-searching trip to Joshua Tree, that Morgan found her unique voice.

From a small AirBNB tucked away in the Joshua Tree area, Morgan created the beautifully composed song “Your Hurricane”, which stands out clearly through the album, feeling the helplessness of love and how it overcomes us. Followed by her edgy, almost heavy metal track “Morning Light” which captures her feisty side.

Morgan’s personality beams through with every track on the album. It’s soulful, truthful, and without a doubt, relatable in every single lyric she’s singing. From beginning to end, the entire record is a masterpiece of storytelling. It’s clear and strong writing that doesn’t miss any important details.

In a recent press release, Morgan explains the idea behind the title track “Borrowed Heart”, which she co-wrote with Lori McKenna, “There is so much meaning to the words ‘Borrowed Heart’, together for me that goes beyond the song.” she says. “I have been writing with other artists for a while and it’s such a gift to create with them. You literally pass on parts of your story and your soul in the writer room to other people and they do the same. This title just seemed to fit the moment and summarize everything I put into it.”

Most of the songs on the album are composed by Morgan, along with some help from fellow Nashville songwriters and friends including Ross Copperman, Paul Moak, and Lori McKenna.

It’s clear that Morgan’s unique sound and previous experience in the songwriting scene was just the right step for her in creating this project.

Borrowed Heart is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Lauren Alaina Takes Us Back to The ’90s in New Single

Lauren Alaina, "Ladies In The '90s"

Lauren Alaina, “Ladies In The ’90s”

ACM New Female Vocalist of the Year, Lauren Alaina released her latest single, “Ladies in the ‘90s” to country radio today (Oct 5). The song is said to be the first single off her next studio album. It follows the songstress’ first number one song, “Road Less Traveled” and its successor “Doin Fine,” both off her sophomore album Road Less Traveled.

Co-written by Alaina, the nostalgic track celebrates female artists of the 90s across all genres of music, and the time where women artists ruled the country genre. The lyrics remind fans that the 90s were a decade where talented female musicians, like Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks, did not have to struggle to be prominent on the radio and at award shows. Pop icon Britney Spears, girl group Destiny’s Child, and the iconic Spice Girls are also referenced on the track.

“I was raised on radio waves / where the ladies dominated / Sometimes I close my eyes and just replay it / I just want to feel like ladies in the 90’s / Turn the dial and find me some ‘Strawberry Wine’ / So I can sing all night long / Acting like I’m Britney”

The single seems to follow the name-dropping trend we’ve seen in country music, mentioning singers’ name and song titles, such as “Strawberry Wine” and “(Baby) One More Time.” Alaina delivers a girl power anthem with the same excitement as former tour-mate Walker Hayes’ “90s Country.”

Showing her enthusiasm for the new record just before its release, the singer-songwriter took to Twitter, “Tomorrow. Ladies in the ‘90s. This is my favorite single I’ve ever released. I hope you love it too. This is me “Feeling like I’m Britney” at @BrdgstoneArena.”

As Alaina’s opening role on Jason Aldean’s “High Noon Neon Tour” comes to a close, which included playing for a sold out crowd in New York City at Madison Square Garden back in August, Alaina gets ready to embark on another tour. The singer was recently announced as a supporting act on Cole Swindell’s “Ready to Drink… Another Tour”. The tour has not announced a NYC Area stop… yet.

“Ladies In The ’90s” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

Tim McGraw Takes Us To Church With Brand New Single

Tim McGraw, Neon Church

Tim McGraw, Neon Church

A typical church is not what’s depicted in Tim McGraw’s new single “Neon Church”. With a jukebox choir vibe, McGraw released his first single since 2015 early Thursday evening (Oct 4.) after a week of hints and build up over his social media platforms. First releasing a blurry photo of the album cover, then proceeding to wipe all media clean, leaking a line from the song and a new alert system, McGrawOne, fans have been anticipating this moment all week long.

The song takes you on a journey of McGraw easing his troubles. From moving to a smoky room and a party crowd, to combining a variety of religious imagery, McGraw paints a perfect picture in your mind with thoughtful lyrics.

With the surprise release, fans were also treated to a second song “Thought About You”, another ballad about what love is and what it’s not. While McGraw has put out his fair share of ballads, these two are a complete 180 from the past. In an email sent to fans, McGraw said “I really felt that both these songs were ready to be heard and will absolutely give a sense of where I’m going with my next project. They’re meaningful to me and show the diversity of what I’ve been working on musically..”

This new music is a first look into McGraw’s first solo release since his 2015 album, Damn Country Music, which included hits like “Humble And Kind” and “How I’ll Always Be”. While there is no indication on when McGraw is going to put out a full album, we can only expect more great releases from here.

“Neon Church” and “Thought About You” are now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

NYCS First Impression: Eric Church Releases ‘Desperate Man’

Eric Church Desperate Man

Eric Church, Desperate Man

The term outlaw generally defines one who has broken the law.  Eric Church who released his sixth studio album, Desperate Man, available everywhere today, breaks the laws of the current country music trends by following his gut and releasing music that his fans will love, paying no mind to radio programmers or Billboard charts.

The character that Church plays in his latest video for the title track and debut single from the album showcases a fugitive on the run,  mainly from his record label and industry bigwigs alike as he tries to simply get his music to his fans.  The members of the Church Choir are rewarded each time he releases an album, the vinyl record shows up on their doorstep, sometimes before it is available anywhere else, a precedent he started with his 2015 album Mr. Misunderstood and will continue with this album.

Church doesn’t shy away from his political views on Desperate Man, rather chooses to confront what middle-class Americans are facing in the opening track “The Snake” as well as the album closer, “Drowning Man”.  The former grittily accentuates the greed our government is so often capable of while the latter focuses on the underdog, the struggles blue-collar workers are facing.

“Monsters” highlights several downfalls that the human race encounters including, pride, sickness, and darkness, which all take their lessons from the devil.  Church combats these monsters by facing them head-on with his faith.  (“I keep my faith intact/ make sure my prayers are said / cause I’ve learned that the monsters ain’t the ones beneath the bed”)

Interestingly enough, Desperate Man is released exactly one year after the mass shooting at Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, where Church was a performer the night before the tragedy.  Although each member of our country community was hit hard by this senseless act of violence, he publicly showed his emotion during a performance at The Grand Ole Opry the following week and discussed the event during his in-depth interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, telling them it was the last time he cried.

Desperate Man has it’s heavy, poignant songs but two of our favorites are “Hippie Radio”, a nostalgic look back at a life filled with music from the past and “Heart Like A Wheel” a sensual, sultry track which seems like the perfect sequel to “Like A Wrecking Ball” from his 2014 album The Outsiders. Sonically as a whole, the project explores new dimensions vocally all the while reinventing Church’s signature sound.

Announced last month, Church will begin his Double Down Tour in 2019 bringing his new music on the road. The tour stops in 18 cities, each city he will play two completely different shows, plus one show in Nashville. For the full list of tour dates, head to www.ericchurch.com.  Click here to take a look back at our all-time favorite Eric Church songs so far and take a listen to Desperate Man below.

Home Free Releases “Man of Constant Sorrow” Music Video

A cappella country music group and of our recent Swag Spotlight Features, Home Free, have released the music video for their soulful cover of “Man of Constant Sorrow.” Originally performed by The Soggy Bottom Boys and Dan Tyminski for the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Home Free made this rendition true to their signature sound.

The quintet’s mutual love for O Brother, Where Art Thou? made every decision for this video quite simple. From the location to their wardrobe choices, Home Free paid homage to their favored film almost entirely.

Filmed at Oak Hollow Farm in Fairhope, AL, the group wanted to monumentalize the song’s
rich southern history. In a recent interview with Billboard, the band’s baritone Adam Chance shared, “We’ve taken this song all around the world this past year on tour. It was inspiring to be able to bring it back home to Alabama, and really dig deep into the heart of it for our video.”

The group’s tenor, Rob Lundquist added, “I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen O Brother, Where Art Thou? It definitely put this classic tune on the map for a lot of people, and we sure hope we’ve honored it!”

The video begins with shots of the farm’s nature views before panning to the five vocalists on a dirt road under a trail of trees. All throughout, visuals of each member posted at different locations of Oak Hollow exude the authentic southern vibe they were going for.

Featured on their 2017 album, Timeless, “Man of Constant Sorrow” is the last of the album cycle’s concept videos.

Home Free will wrap up their ‘Timeless World Tour’ early next month, right before they head out on their ‘A Country Christmas Tour’ which will begin on November 24th at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, NJ. Visit homefreemusic.com for a full list of dates and show information as well as future announcements and follow the guys on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for updates.

Morgan Wallen Premieres New Music Video for “Whiskey Glasses”

Morgan Wallen, "Whiskey Glasses"

Morgan Wallen, “Whiskey Glasses”

Big Loud Records recording artist, Morgan Wallen premiered his new music video for “Whiskey Glasses” over the weekend on CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown. “Whiskey Glasses” is the singer’s third single off his debut album If I Know Mefollowing his debut song “The Way I Talk” and platinum certified single featuring Florida Georgia Line, “Up Down.” With over 16 million+ overall streams, “Whiskey Glasses” continues to gain momentum on country radio.

The entertainer showed gratitude to his fans for allowing the track to be his next single by sharing Instagram clips of concertgoers jamming to the song, captioned with “Every show ya’ll just get louder and louder on this song… and because of that, it was really you guys who chose it as my next single to country radio. Thank you for believing in it and for believing in me. Lets keep it going.”

The video pays tribute to the relatable and honest lyrics, true country sound, and the story-telling nature of the track. Directed by Justin Clough, the video begins with a heartbroken Wallen (and his guitar) reeling over losing the woman he thought he loved. The introductory clips perfectly personify the beginning lyrics and play on words,

“Pour me / Pour me another drink / Cause I don’t want to feel a thing /
No more, hell naw / I just want to sip until the pain wears off.

Eventually, one of the singer’s friends reminds him that he should not dwell over a broken relationship, where he was cheated on, and encourages him to get pumped up for the show he is set to play that night at a local bar. From that point on, the video shows Wallen, with the help of his boys and a little liquid courage (whiskey of course), bouncing back from heartbreak.

The singer-songwriter is seen “throwing down” whiskey shots, sporting a new hair cut, and performing his song on a wild night out. Although an untraditional break-up song, the entertainers antics are easy to connect to. Check out the brand. new music video below.

In a recent press release and exclusive interview with People, the Tennessee native candidly shared his feelings about the new single, “I think we’ve all been in that situation before when you’re trying to get over somebody and you resort to [drinking]. I connected to it in many ways.”

Next up for the rising country star, he will join the fall leg of Jake Owen’s 2018 “Life’s Whatcha Make It” Tour, with the next stop in Pennsylvania. Visit Morganwallen.com for more information and keep up with Wallen on his Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Canaan Cox Uses Unique Approach in Releasing New Music

Canaan Cox, "Take My Time"

Canaan Cox, “Take My Time”

Canaan Cox has captured the hearts of fans everywhere through his honest lyrics and North Carolina country charm. Since moving to Nashville in 2016, he has put out a self-titled EP along with several single releases. Fans following Cox on Instagram, will quickly recognize his hustle and ‘do-it-yourself’ mentality. Working hard to promote his music, schedule shows, and connect with his fans all on his own. It is truly impressive the ground he has covered in the last two years.

Releasing his latest single “Take My Time”, Cox explains in a recent conversation how his unconventional approach to the song led him to the final outcome.

“This song actually happened to be the outcome of a ‘bad’ write,” he explains, “We went in to write something and none of us were feeling it. I simply said ‘let’s just go way left field and write a pop song’.”

Cox chalked the day up to be just another write under his belt, thinking the pop song they had written was simply a good way to work on their songwriting skills and explore their creativity. It was not until he heard the finished song from a demo they received back that Cox realized it was something he actually really did want to put out for his fans to hear.

His one dilemma? It wasn’t a “country song”. Cox went on to explain, “Even though country nowadays has it’s pop flair, as an indie/country artist I didn’t want to throw a crazy curveball at my fans and say ‘listen to this pop song’ and them be like… ‘ugh, Canaan, what is this?'”

Instead, Cox took the opportunity to create a truly unique project by releasing two versions of the song with two completely different music videos to go along. For the pop friendly version, he found Daisha McBride, a fellow independent artist on Twitter, who has killer tunes and the great attitude that he was looking for. She brings unique vocals to the track and truly ties it all together. After that, Cox quickly sent some ideas to production for a country version and things began to fall into place.

Cox claims that he is excited to see the reaction his fans have to his newest single because of the different avenue he took.

“Take My Time” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

Jessie James Decker Surprises Fans with New Single “Boots”

Jessie James Decker, Boots

Jessie James Decker, Boots

After taking some time away from country music to concentrate on her clothing line, hair care line and book, along with taking care of her new baby boy, Jessie James Decker surprised fans with a brand new single, “Boots.”

Earlier this week, Decker subtly teased fans by posting a seven second clip to instagram of her shoot with JustFab for their upcoming collaborative clothing line, captioned, “JJD x @justfabonline …. get ready (ps yes this is a new song. Out soon)” Just hours before the song’s release, Decker officially announced “Boots” by posting a thirty second clip of the single with it’s cover art and caption, “Tonight. new music droppin #boots (this is my new song it’s featured in my new @justfabonline commercial!!!)”

Co-written by Tofer Brown, “Boots” is an upbeat, fun and sassy anthem version of the idiom “walk a mile in their shoes.” Before judging someone, you must understand their experiences, challenges, thought processes, etc. Decker put her own womanly, country twist on it and sings in the chorus:

“Come on, tonight /  I’m daring you to walk a mile in my boots / Bring it on, just try / I bet you couldn’t even strap ‘em up on right / You got your little friends / I hear ‘em talkin’ / But talking ain’t the same as walking a mile in my boots so come on”

In addition to the single, Decker wrote a new book titled “Just Jessie”, due out on October 2nd. It is a self-written guide to love, life, family and food. To celebrate the book’s release, the singer-songwriter will be going on a four-city book signing tour which will stop in Brooklyn at The BookMark Shoppe on October 3rd at 7pm. You can pre-order the book here.

“Boots” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.
