Today’s spotlight artist has always been drawn to entertaining. We chatted with singer-songwriter, Dawson Anderson all about his journey to country music, his new songs, and everything in between.
Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Anderson moved to Temecula, California when he was nine years old, a move that would ultimately kickstart his journey with music. Anderson was always a charismatic kid, who enjoyed being in front of people, which included putting on shows and magic shows for his family. His mom quickly recognized his big personality and love of performing.
“I always wanted to be in front of people,” Anderson shared. “I wanted to make a small impact or a large impact in your day. That was always my goal.”
His mom eventually signed him up for guitar lessons, and the singer quickly fell in love with music. Even from a young age, he recalls listening differently than most people, dissecting certain parts of songs and becoming infatuated with specific melodies and sounds.
One of his earliest memories came from watching Cars and hearing Rascal Flatts’ “Life Is a Highway.” “I think I was maybe six years old hearing that song in the movie Cars and just having my mom rewind that scene over and over again,” he shared. Anderson also had a love for artists like John Mayer, Keith Urban, and Green Day, showcasing his eclectic taste.
“I’d say probably the biggest musical influence on me was John Mayer,” he shared, adding, “I think if you listen to only one genre, you can get boxed in,” he added, explaining that his love of music extends far beyond country and into pop, rock, jazz, and R&B.
Anderson started playing guitar at ten years old, but interestingly enough, singing wasn’t initially part of the plan. At the time, he was also playing hockey and traveling to Los Angeles for acting classes and auditions. “I just thought singing was lame,” he joked.
Thankfully, his mom convinced him to take some vocal lessons. During his second lesson, Anderson met sisters Maddie and Emma, who would eventually become his bandmates in Temecula Road. “They taught me how to sing harmony,” he shared. “It blew my mind. I was so hooked.” At fifteen years old, Anderson officially joined Temecula Road, beginning a chapter that would eventually bring the trio to Nashville and introduce him to songwriting, performing, and every piece of creating an artist project.
The Turning Point:
As Anderson continued growing with Temecula Road, his love for music expanded far beyond singing and playing guitar. He found himself fascinated by every part of the creative process, from songwriting and production to stage plots, marketing, visuals, and even the colors that helped bring a project to life.
“I kind of found my love for writing and the creation process,” he shared. “Not just with the songs, but creating stage plots and figuring out how we’re gonna market this, and what the color schemes are gonna be for this, stylistically how is this gonna look visually as well as sonically.”
He continued to take his wide range of music acts and genres to heart with everything he did. “I’ve always loved all kinds of music,” he shared. Later, artists like Lady A, Drake, Morgan Wallen, and early Sam Hunt continued to influence his approach to music, while Charles Kelley became one of the vocalists Anderson studied closely.
After years together, Temecula Road eventually came to an end in 2023, after an incredibly impressive run. For Anderson, music was still his calling. “I’ve been hitting the ground running ever since,” he shared. “It never slowed down.”
Since then, he has continued releasing music as a solo artist, finding a new sense of freedom in getting to create exactly what feels authentic to him. For Anderson, even the difficult parts of building a career in music are worth it.
“My worst day is still a good day,” he shared. “I’m still grinding at this every day, and it’s a lot of work, a lot of strenuous hours, a lot of unknowns. But, man, do I love it.”
Today:
Flash forward to today,Anderson is fully immersed his artistry and what he has to say.
Most recently, the singer-songwriter released a catchy song called “Like You Never Left.” The songs quickly became one of his personal favorites (and ours too). Produced alongside Brett Truitt, the track initially took some time to find its footing in the studio.
“We were a little lost in the beginning of what to do,” Anderson shared. After spending hours trying different ideas, everything suddenly clicked, and the song came together in roughly 45 minutes. “We either royally screwed this up, or we just created something incredible,” he recalled thinking after the session, but when he listened again, he knew it was perfect.
Anderson describes “Like You Never Left” as possibly his favorite song he’s released, especially from a production standpoint. The track also showcases his love of writing complicated relationship songs, creating stories that can pull from both his own experiences and imagined scenarios. “There’s no right or wrong answer,” he shared of songwriting. “It’s literally whatever we make of it […] My favorite part of this whole thing is that human connection and bringing people together,” he shared.
Looking ahead, fans can expect plenty more music. Anderson has been spending countless hours writing and recording, while also preparing for upcoming festival appearances throughout Europe, including shows in the Netherlands and Denmark.
Most importantly, Anderson feels like he’s entering one of the strongest creative chapters of his career.
“I feel more myself than I ever have,” he shared. “I’m excited.” Stay tuned!
