Victoria Shaw “Under The Covers” Songwriter Night

Victoria Shaw Under the Covers

Last night the legendary Birdland Jazz Club was the home of a new special for ALL Arts broadcast channel, entitled Victoria Shaw “Under The Covers”. This specific evening featured songwriters Marcus Hummon and Beth Neilsen Chapman out of Nashville, Tennesee. All three songwriters have had major hits with Garth Brooks, Elton John, Faith Hill, Rascal Flatts, and many more major recording artists.

Guests were seated at tiny, candlelit tables as the three songwriters took the stage to thunderous applause. The night commenced with all three songwriters taking turns telling stories about their careers, their love for songwriting and the family that their career has given them in this music industry.

Highlights from the night included Marcus Hummon singing his hits “Cowboy Take Me Away” which he wrote with the Dixie Chicks as well as “Bless the Broken Road” where he quoted Elton John in saying, “When in doubt, write a hymn”, a beautiful sentiment before playing his major Rascal Flatts hit.

Beth Neilsen Chapman, proving she is one of the best songwriters, sang two songs she wrote that had the entire room in awe, “Sand and Water” which she wrote after losing her first husband to cancer and “Epitaph For Love” about a love story not quite working out in the end.

Victoria Shaw who has had major success with Garth Brooks sang “She’s Every Woman” and told the story about how she was walking down the street with Brooks one day and the song idea just came to them. She also told the story of when they wrote his massive hit “The River” how he sat on the floor and said to her “Can’t you just see an arena full of people waving their lighters back and forth to this song, then how she had the chance to not only open for Brooks when he played Central Park but how she got to sit back and watch a million people sway their lighters back and forth to her song.

Shaw invited fellow New Yorker and hit songwriter Julie Gold to take the stage to perform her iconic Bette Midler cut, “From a Distance” which has been recorded internationally and has even won a Grammy. The surprise rounded out the night of incredible stories and songs from these legends in the songwriting business. The show will air in the future on ALL Arts broadcast channel, streaming on Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Prime – for dates times and channels go to allarts.org.
