NYCS Swag Spotlight: Rob Baird

Memphis, Tennessee native who now resides in Austin, Texas, Rob Baird recalls growing up being surrounded by music. Memphis, although not as famous for music as Nashville, has shaped the landscape of the blues, rock n roll, and Motown genre.  Baird in a recent phone conversation chats about his new record and his switch from a cattle rancher to a singer-songwriter . Growing up he tells us his very first concert was ZZ Top when he was in the third grade but that he was inspired by Al Green and the music that made Memphis famous. “If you grew up in Memphis, you just drive by Sun Records 3000 times in your lifetime,” he tells us. “I feel like Memphis doesn’t get as much credit as it deserves for being such a great music town”.

He started playing music in college and when people started showing up to his shows, he knew that maybe the switch from ranch manager to musician was the best decision to make. After releasing his first two records in Nashville, he made the move to Austin. “I’m obsessed with where I live, I just love it,” Baird tells us of the city. Although all of the writing for his fourth studio record took place at his kitchen table in Texas, he traveled to Nashville to record After All with longtime friend Rick Brantley as the producer under the direction of Jeremy Ferguson (Cage the Elephant and Lucie Silvas).

He called the shots on this record, writing all ten tracks and allowing only people who he felt knew him and his mission, to work with him to achieve it. “For this project, we just needed someone that we really trusted, that knew me well, and cared about the project, we wanted dear friends who understood what we want to do,” Baird explains. The tracks are autobiographical, telling the story of heartbreak, loss, and healing. Featuring Lucie Silvas’ smokey voice on background vocals on “Burning Blue”, it is one of the highlights on After All.

Looking ahead to 2019, Baird is promoting the new record playing shows not only in Texas but across the south. Check out our review from his intimate showcase in Fort Worth, Texas here.

Rob Baird Performs at Fort Worth Live in Texas

Friday, Feb 1st brought unseasonably warm weather – but that wasn’t the only thing that had Fort Worth, Texas locals happy.  TCU alumni and Austin resident Rob Baird was playing Fort Worth Live, celebrating the release of his new album, After All, that was released earlier this year. Held on the second story of the Juvenile Shoe Store, Fort Worth Live was the perfect venue for Baird fans to share an intimate evening listening to the singer-songwriter’s hits and even sharing a drink with him. The venue hosted 130 of Baird fans old and young, all singing along to his music.

The show began with Fort Worth local, Parker Chapin. As Chapin began to sing he quickly won over the crowd with his eclectic vocals and beautiful lyrics.

Baird opened up the show strumming away to one of his new songs “I Tried”. His fans listened intensely once he was done as he talked about his TCU days, his brief stint in Nashville and finally how he made the move to Austin. He also discussed how the album After All came to be – a shotgun romance with an actress from California. “Fade Away”, “Give Me Back Love” and “Best That I Was” were also some other hits played on this February night. Baird played a heck of a show, especially considering he was up before dawn for Good Day Fox 4 Dallas. He provided the perfect blend between hits from his previous albums and his newest masterpiece.

What was most intriguing about Baird was his connection to his fans, college students, young couples and even older adults all seem to have had the same enthusiasm for the Tennesee native. His lyrics speak to them, connecting fans from all over the country. The night was filled with sharing stories and the intimate setting was unforgettable for the fans in attendance.

NYCS First Impression: Rob Baird ‘After All’

Rob Baird

It’s been few years since Rob Baird’s last album, Wrong Side of the River was released. On Jan 11th the fourth studio album by the Memphis, TN native, After All, hit the shelves describing a fast and hard relationship in where Baird co-wrote ten tracks, making it deeply personal.

Baird writes an unfiltered and unapologetic 10 album track about that relationship leaving nothing unsaid. The project reflects on all the stages of grief from the loss of a partner and ultimately closes out with retrospect and peace.

This album for Baird, now based in Austin, took a year and a half to perfect – and it was worth all the wait. There’s the desperate pleading in “Give me Back my Love” (We all got love that never made sense/we all got love we never could keep) an unforgettable sound in the sexy yet angry track “Ain’t Going Back To You” (Even when I can’t give up every piece of us/I’d rather turn to dust) and some hostility in “Greedy Eyes” (Their never satisfied/always wanting more). The smoothness of Baird’s vocals and the use of both acoustic and electric guitars help set the tone for this album.

Baird does have his share of songs content with the end of the relationship and the hope for the future. The title track “After All” describes the ultimate end the singer knew was coming yet his final song on the album “Best That I Was” perfectly sums up the story told throughout these 10 songs. Baird’s perfect rasp allow any listener to live the emotion in the singer-songwriter’s words ‘Now I can trust/All that was us/ was the best that I was’.
