Rayne Johnson Debut, Self-titled EP – Review

Rayne Johnson’s brand new debut self-titled EP is available now, October 30th on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the collection of songs.

About a year ago, we introduced our followers to a promising new talent in the industry.  Swag Spotlight alum, Rayne Johnson is an incredible budding singer-songwriter. His debut single “Front Seat” was a smash hit with fans and radio, but his brand new self-titled EP, out today, is an even bigger accomplishment.

The nine-track record is fans’ first look at a full catalog of songs by the rising artist. Johnson combines his love for country music and R&B music on this cohesive project. The record shines both lyrically and production-wise, completely leaning into both of those diverse influences.

“I want [fans] to actually hear the story,” Johnson shares in a recent press release, “Country’s my favorite genre, but I love R&B too. I’m trying to bring some of that style to country storytelling. I’m translating who I am through the lyrics and the music. Hopefully, fans can relate.”

The introductory track “Bring It Back” embodies both of those genres. Lyrically, the song is about a couple trying to bring love back to the good ole days. Johnson sings about holding hands, the meaning behind “I love you,” and of course back when Merle Haggard was on the radio. It definitely has radio appeal, and we are certain that fans are going to want to jam to it.

“Like holdin’ your hand on an old porch swing // Lovin’ like Janis loved Bobby McGee / Like Jack and Diane all over again / Let’s bring it back”

Johnson’s current radio single “Real Dang Good” stays with the upbeat nature of the first track. With traditional country production and relatable lyrics, the single is the feel-good tune that we all need right now. Switching gears, the record transitions into a slower song, the singer’s debut single “Front Seat.” The charted song shows the entertainer’s softer side, leaning into the romantic nature of the message behind the catchy lyrics.

The record continues to transition into a more mid-tempo vibe. Both “Same Boat” and “Laid Back” feature clever lyrics. “Same Boat” showcases camaraderie between our generations, while “Laid Back” is a cheeky, fun-loving song that encourages not taking yourself or all music too seriously.

For fans who prefer the more vulnerable side of Johnson, both “Last Name” and “Love ‘Em While You Can” definitely fit the bill. The former is a romantic love song created for people who have a hard time expressing their feelings, but the latter is one of our absolute favorites. The sentimental and heart-wrenching song is all about appreciating the people in your life, while they are still here. He reminds us all that life is a precious gift that we shouldn’t take for granted. Through this song, it is clear that Johnson knows a thing or two about grief and pain.

“So love ‘em while you can / Cause life’s too short not to give a damn / Love ‘em while you can / Cause you might not get a second chance to / Tuck in your babies, make sure they’re okay / Hold ‘em tight cause this life will get crazy”

Overall, Johnson’s debut EP is a solid representation of his artistry. The singer delivers a fresh new take on topics like love, loss, and fun while remaining true to his influences and his roots.

Rayne Johnson Is Feeling “Real Dang Good” with New Song

Rayne Johnson’s new song “Real Dang Good” is available now, October 7th, on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dive deeper into the new track.

Rayne Johnson brings the fun and his flirty side to his new song “Real Dang Good.” The new song will be his first single under his new label, Verge Records. It’s an upbeat, feel-good song that’s easy to listen to over and over. The lyrics paint the scene of a guy hanging out in a bar after a tough week and everything changes when he sees the girl that changes everything.

Real Dang Good Rayne Johnson

“She said boy do you maybe want to dance with me // Looks like you could use a little company // I could turn your night around // How does that sound // I said good, good, real dang good // Yeah, ‘cause that night didn’t feel right until I saw her pretty face // We were dancing, it was crazy // I felt like you knew me baby // That night was looking bad until I saw her // But it got good, good, real dang good”

“Real Dang Good” is a song everyone can relate to, especially in this day and time,” Johnson says in a recent press release. “We all have those tough weeks and need someone or something to pick us up, and who better than that girl (or guy) you didn’t even know you were lookin’ for?”

The Ohio native is still fairly new to the country music scene. He’s opened for Riley Green, Hunter Hayes, and Randy Houser and has released three singles in the last two years. “Front Seat” landed on both the Mediabase Country Aircheck and Billboard Country Airplay charts and was streamed more than 24 million times.

The singer-songwriter is the latest act to sign a deal with Mickey Jack Cones, President, and COO of Verge Records—the label arm of global music company ONErpm.

Swag Spotlight Alumni Rayne Johnson Releases “Last Name”

Rayne Johnson Last Name

Rayne Johnson took over the radio airwaves with his single, the heartfelt “Front Seat.” We learned a little bit about the process for that song and others in our Swag Spotlight feature back in October. Today, Johnson is premiering a new song entitled “Last Name.”

Fans are sure to be smitten with the singer-songwriters cheeky and romantic new single. “Last Name” is the song for people, who find it hard to share their feelings with the ones they love. The upbeat and groovy tune is a clever way of telling your loved one that you want to marry them in a roundabout kind of way. Johnson is a pro at cleverly weaving together intricate and diverse lyrics, keeping fans guessing with ambiguity.

“Oh you got it going on from head to toe/ There’s just one thing about you girl you gotta know / I don’t like your last name / I think you need a new one / And I’ve been holding on to mine/ Baby if you want one”

Vocally, Johnson appears to be having a blast on the song. His influences span from the classics in country to R&B and everything in between and “Last Name” showcases those inspirations perfectly. We especially love how Johnson chooses to end the song. Take a listen to find out for yourself. So far, the singer has proven that he is the real deal and that he will continue to keep fans entertained and excited for his music.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Rayne Johnson

Rayne Johnson

This week’s Swag Spotlight is taking over the airwaves with his current radio single “Front Seat.” Rayne Johnson hails from Southern Ohio, but his sound is influenced by his vast life experiences and multi-genre musical interests.

Growing up in church, Johnson often sang on holidays. He shared that his parents, especially his mom would always play the classics on vinyl, such as Nat King Cole, Elvis, and Frank Sinatra. “I think the impact that influenced me from the Nat King Cole and the Frank Sinatra stuff [was] I could always recognize how they could make you feel what they were singing.” On the other hand, his father made him fall in love with classic country music, especially Merle Haggard. “On the country music side, my dad was a classic country guy, that was more of the story-telling and I saw that in country music.” When he got older, he added R&B artists like Brian McKnight and Babyface to his music collection.

His eclectic music taste led him to a music career, writing and recording songs that span genres. Johnson’s song “Laid Back” garnered success on Spotify, where fans took a liking to the cheeky lyrics in the fun song. He wrote the song with a friend from Rhode Island, who he claims has a knack for wordplay. Although the lyrics are the star, the funky and soulful beat, along with the singer’s vocal delivery make it a smash.

On the the other end of the spectrum, Johnson’s current radio single and first national release, “Front Seat” showcases his vulnerable and emotive side. All the buzz around the new song can only be described with one word “surreal,” according to the singer. “Honestly it wasn’t one of those songs, where we’re like ‘this is the one,’ everyone is going to love this. We knew it was a good song for sure, but it’s really hard to break with a ballad in any type of music really. It’s just been received super well.”

As we delved deeper into the impactful song, we learned about the inspiration for the beautiful ballad. “It was more or less, some friends of mine attacking a song that could maybe inspire guys to treat girls better. A few of us have younger boys, and we were like ‘How do we want our boys to be when they grow up?’ Cause honestly, today’s society is a lot different when it comes to respect and the old school type of thing, ya know.”

Johnson added that he is so appreciative that fans are relating to the song’s message, sharing “It’s been really cool to see. I get direct messages all the time from young ladies, I would say more from women expressing like “I just came out of an eleven-year relationship, where I was treated awful, this song is so awesome for me.,” adding that the song resonates with the men too. “I also get messages from guys, saying “Bro, this song is awesome man. I wish my friends treated their girlfriends this way.””

We could all learn a thing or two from “Front Seat,” and it is especially important that we continue to empower women to stand up for themselves, but also to encourage men to be the best they can be too. Johnson is a pioneer when it comes to that sentiment.

We closed out our interview discussing upcoming music. Although are no solid dates, Johnson assures us that there is an EP coming towards the end of the fall, early winter. He added, “I’m so excited about it because I feel like it’s one of those EPs that have so many songs that people are going to love.” If it is anything like his previous releases, we are sure that Johnson’s upcoming EP will be just as powerful.
