Kacey Musgraves: ‘Deeper Well’ – Album Review

Kacey Musgraves shares her fifth studio album, Deeper Well, out now, March 15th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new project here.

Kacey Musgraves has long been one of country’s – and forget just country, music’s – most influential songwriters of the 21st century. Her way of cutting straight to the bone of a lyric has rocked listeners’ worlds for over a decade, and her latest, Deeper Well, continues to weave universal storytelling with sonic ethereal magic.

The album’s opener, “Cardinal” is a wonderful opener for a variety of reasons. For one, it’s probably one of the funkier tracks, sounding like a cross between a 2000s Nelly Furtado hit and deep-cut off The Chicks’ Home. There are interesting rhythmic and tempo changes that occur by the time the listener gets to the bridge, and lyrically, it sets the tone for the entirety of the album: seeing signs in everything, falling in love, anxiety, growing up, and letting yourself make mistakes and learning from them.

Title track “Deeper Well” is the second song, and previously released “Too Good To Be True” is third, and while already lovely on its own, fit seamlessly into the story of the rest of the album. The threads of anxiety and falling are leaned into.

You can clearly hear the inspiration of everyone from Willie Nelson and John Prine to Nick Drake and Judee Sill on tracks like “Dinner With Friends” and “Giver/Taker”. Musgraves and her musical partners, Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian modulate on “Dinner With Friends” in this particularly interesting way that is reminiscent of the 70s more psychedelic folk like Drake and Sill, although lyrically it falls slightly short of that vibe. “Giver/Taker” is just generally fantastic, with the drums coming in on the second verse in that floaty, “Slow Burn” perfection way. There are a lot of metaphors to the outdoors on this album, but also, a lot to “the house” that Musgraves is in. “Moving Out” clearly follows that metaphor as well.

Transitions from one song into the next flow seamlessly together, another nod to the 60s and 70s songwriter influence, and this is really heard on a favorite, “Sway”. It’s floaty and gorgeous sonically, but also incredibly thoughtful. “Most of the time thoughts in my mind keep me running/Show me a place where I can just think of nothing”. It’s existential, but also a surrender to anxiety, with Musgraves sharing that “maybe one day I’ll learn how to sway”.

Perhaps the middle of the album gets a bit redundant lyrically – “Lonely Millionaire” and “Heart Of The Woods” are slightly forgettable – but every track is still truly stunning in the effortless sonic planet that Musgraves, Fitchuk and Tashian have created.

The only song written without Fitchuk and Tashian is “The Architect”, written with longtime, original collaborators Shane McNally and Josh Osborne. As usual, the three wrote a song that is like a masterclass in country storytelling. “Is it too late to make some more space?” Musgraves ponders throughout. Sonically, it could fit the bill of any Lilith Fair performer.

Deeper Well feels like a slightly more countrified Laurel Canyon project, and the wonderful closer, “Nothing To Be Scared Of” solidifies this. Musgraves successfully stripped back a layer of vulnerability when writing this album that resonates, and Deeper Well is already shaping up to be one of the musical highlights of 2024.

If You Like Maggie Rogers, Then You’ll Love…

NYU alumni and indie-folk star Maggie Rogers has taken the music industry by a storm, garnering fans across many different genres. A lot of the elements of what makes her such a special artist is what makes a lot of country artists special.

What fans love most about her music is the high energy, and how timeless her stories are. That’s country music. If you like Maggie Rogers but aren’t too familiar with the country genre, NYCS has some recommendations for you!

Kacey Musgraves

There’s a reason Kacey Musgraves asked Maggie Rogers to open for her in Nashville! Musgraves is a poignant songwriter, much like Rogers, and both have a way of engaging fans with their words, voices, and their way of speaking up for what matters to them. Both artists’ have dreamy qualities to their music that makes it infectious; her whole catalog is amazing, but new fans should check out “Miserable” off Pageant Material and “Slow Burn” off Golden Hour.

To keep up with Kacey Musgraves, follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Kassi Ashton

Kassi Ashton is one of Nashville’s brightest new stars, and for good reason. She is a sharp writer with an even more captivating voice, and she leans on the more pop/r&b side of country, making her a perfect gateway artist for fans of other genres. Not only is she an amazing musician, but she designs her own clothes and wears them whenever she is on stage. She is unique and bold, just like Rogers. New fans should listen to her emotional “Pretty Shiny Things” and her current single “Hopeless”.

To keep up with Kassi Ashton, follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Brett Eldredge

When Brett Eldredge first appeared on the music scene, he established himself as a powerhouse male vocalist and as someone who knew how to let loose. Three albums later, he’s proved that he is also able to release vulnerable music. All of his songs are cathartic and intense in the best way possible, which are two important qualities that much of Rogers’ catalog has. Listen to “No Stopping You” and “Cycles”, two songs that deliver in both vocal performance and storytelling.

NYCS Woman of the Month: Catherine Powell

We’re bringing you stories from women who are chasing their dreams and building a life that they love with New York Country Swag’s, “Woman of the Month”.

Each month, we highlight a different female pursuing her passions. Introducing you to women who are taking risks, working relentlessly and turning their dreams into reality. These are empowering women who serve as role models and should be celebrated.

Catherine Powell

“When I was two years old, we were at the Jersey Shore on the beach and I was trying to build sandcastles and the tide kept knocking them down and I apparently stood up on my chubby little legs and yelled at the ocean saying, ‘STOP I’m not done yet’. She says I’ve spent my entire life yelling at the world to conform to me.”

Catherine Powell, our first Woman of the Month for 2020 gave incredible insight to her career as the touring photographer with artists such as Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, and Dan + Shay as well as how she got her start running her own magazine. She also was open and honest about how being a fan has given her the driving force and inspiration to pursue her career. Like many of us, she grew up being influenced by the music her parents would play, her mom being a huge country fan of artists like Vince Gill, Faith Hill, and all of the greats of the 90s. In middle school, however, she rebelled a bit and became a huge fan of the Warped Tour scene, bands like Jimmie Eat World, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, All Time Low, and May Day Parade. “My parents, God bless them, were like sure, wear this weird neon hoodie and straighten your bands and put on 7 pounds of eyeliner every day, live your life,” she laughs.

Throughout her childhood, Powell quickly learned that failing at one thing meant she would find another to way to make it work, for example, she knew from a very early age that she wanted to be a part of the music world so she took three years of guitar lessons, which she said went terribly. Her parents sat her down to discuss what kind of extracurriculars she would focus on while in high school to prepare her for college and helped guide her to pursue a career that she would thrive in, even being brutally honest about her ability to play sports, “My Dad, looked me square in the eye and said ‘You are not going to make the team, you are just going to embarrass yourself, find something else’.” she laughs but realizing once again, that those roadblocks eventually opened up to the right path.

Her father, who collected cameras, always encouraged her to take photos, she would wait in line for 6 hours before concerts to be up front with her point and shoot camera to get the best pictures of her favorite bands. At 14 years old, her father bought her a professional camera and told her to just ‘go wild’ and taking the initiative she went to the local venue and told them she wanted to take pictures there. Although she wasn’t making any money, she took that time to build up her portfolio and connections in the industry. Around this time, as she started photographing bigger artists, Powell made the decision to start NKD Magazine with one of her friends.  “I wasn’t learning as much as I wanted to about these artists that I cared so deeply about and I knew, other people cared so deeply about them too, and so that was the stepping off point. Our goal was for our interviews to go really deep and ask the questions that fans really want to know,” she explains. “We didn’t want to box in a genre, if we like all of these things, there are probably other people who like all of these things as well, why limit ourselves.”

The magazine which was available in both print and digital found a niche with two very different demographics of fans, country music and ‘nerd culture’. She was giving artists and actors that wouldn’t normally be featured in major magazines or publications a chance to really dig deep and tell their story, something that was unique to her brand. She quickly tapped into what she calls ‘the driving force of the entire world’, teenage girls. Proving that their interests and how passionate they are is what drives artists to have a single go number one on radio, to having them sell out an arena tour.

While in college in New York, Powell dug into the country scene before it became as popular as it is now, making connections with publicists and managers when artists would come through to play small shows. She photographed Kacey Musgraves and Dan + Shay at their very first New York City shows, obviously making a lasting impression on their teams. While her magazine was thriving, she always longed to be on tour with an artist and to move to Nashville. While visiting a friend in London, Powell got an email that Kacey Musgraves needed a photographer for C2C and this was only a few weeks before Golden Hour, the album that went on to win Grammy Album of the Year was released. Being a long time fan of her music, she was thrilled she got this opportunity and was then hired for a few more shows and that set the stage for a life-changing 2019 for both Musgraves as an artist and Powell as her photographer. “To be with someone who is going through all of those things, there were so many times when we looked at each other and we were like, ‘This is crazy! What are we doing?!’,” she recalls. “I had been a huge fan of Kacey since “Merry Go Round”, I was a super fan, so to be able to shoot that first show, I was stoked, but, to be able to build this relationship and have it at the right point in time was so serendipitous.”

As they say, the rest is history, winning Grammy awards, being included on the biggest lineups for summer festivals and touring the world, Catherine’s childhood dreams were coming true right alongside Kacey’s. As she continues to explain this huge part of her life, she laughs recalling a professor in college who took one look at her live work in her portfolio and said: “‘Okay, this is great, but where is your real work?” and I said this is my real work and he said, “Alright well this isn’t going to get you into museums or galleries, so I need you to think a little more creatively, commercial photography is not photography.’ That was my first impression at college. I want to contact him now and be like ‘Hey, head over to the Country Music Hall of Fame, that is a museum and my photos are in it.”

As her touring career with major artists was taking off, she had made the decision to have NKD Magazine’s 100th issue be their last. Having one dream come to an end, she was then asked to shoot a campaign for Dan + Shay with none other than pop sensation, Justin Bieber as they readied their collaboration, “10,000 Hours” which is currently sitting atop of the country charts. She also toured with Maren Morris on her GIRL The World Tour and was there to capture the vulnerability that comes along with finding out you are pregnant and having to keep it a secret from not only your fans that you are performing for but the world. “I think it’s just a really exciting privilege and honor to be allowed to be there,” she says. “I grew up being obsessed with artists and music and my whole reason for picking up a camera at the end of the day was wanting to be in the room.”

Of course, when we discuss her favorite parts of her job, its taking photos and getting to see her favorite music live but she has also discovered that connecting with fans, taking photos of them, and handing out guitar picks to the audience is so fulfilling as well. “I know what it’s like to be the kid who is hanging on the balcony, trying to express how much the song means to me and feeling like nobody is noticing how much you are pouring into this, and finding a way to show fans that we all see you and we are grateful for you, that’s what I love.”

As always, we end our conversation on her advice for anyone looking to break into the music industry and follow their dreams. She honestly said “I really think that just be a fan, be vocal about being a fan. At the end of the day, the music industry is so weird, they want to be prepared for a job but you can’t like, say that you are prepared for that job. If you go into an interview for a job where you are going to be asked specific questions where you have to know specific things, you have to prove in that interview that you know those things, that you know how to talk about them and know how to work with that world but in the music industry the second that you say you are a huge fan, people immediately think ‘Oh, is that why you want to work here?’ Like yeah, it is, why wouldn’t I?”

“If you are a fan of someone you root for them, you work harder for them and I think that’s how lives change in this world.”

Kacey Musgraves Performs at the Iconic Radio City Music Hall

Around two years ago, Kacey Musgraves stepped on stage to a half-filled room in New York City while opening for Little Big Town. Some people knew her name, but not nearly enough. People were walking in during her set, talking, laughing, but once she closed her set with hit “Merry Go ‘Round”, accompanied by just her and her guitar, the crowd went silent. They learned her name that night.

Kacey Musgraves Radio City

On Tuesday, October 15th, Musgraves walked on to that stage again; this time as a headliner at the first of two sold-out shows at the legendary Radio City Music Hall. She started with “Slow Burn”, the first track off the Grammy-winning album Golden Hour, with her guitar and silhouette being the only two things visible. Once the second verse kicked in, the lights came up, and the crowd went wild. “Oh my gosh, this is exciting. Ok well, you didn’t sell out just one night, you sold out two!” She shouted to the audience, which resulted in cheers throughout the entire venue. “I am so honored and so excited to be here, there are just no words to describe how happy I am to be playing this iconic place, and in New York City nonetheless. Are y’all ready to have a good time?” The crowd roared in response. “Sweet, me too.”

The crowd had better than a good time, and Musgraves appeared to be having just as much fun as the fans did. She sang hits like “Butterflies” and “Follow Your Arrow”, both of which the crowd knew every word to and sang almost as loud as she did. “This is my story about growing up in a small town,” Musgraves said to the audience before playing “Merry Go ‘Round”. One of the highlights of the night was when she accompanied herself on guitar as the crowd sang the last chorus of “Go ‘Round” by themselves, a moment that was incredibly vulnerable for every person filling the seats, and for Musgraves and her band.

Musgraves added something special to her extended tour. She had beautiful, detailed lasers that created an absolute utopia of an atmosphere. The lasers generated stars, clouds, and, golden beams of light, among other things. After singing Pagent Material album cut “Family is Family,” Musgraves told the crowd, “This next person I want to bring out is from my family, but not the crazy [kind mentioned in “Family]… he is someone I really admire so much, as a fellow songwriter and creator, but also as my husband,” she said, and with that, Ruston Kelly (Bowery Ballroom, October 24th) surprised everyone and came out with his guitar. The couple played their song, “To June, This Morning”, the lyrics from a letter Johnny Cash wrote to June Carter Cash, and the melody they wrote together. The theatre was silent as the two sang the love song in electrifying harmony, and although there were thousands of fans watching them, it was one of the highlights and most intimate moments of the night.

kcdey musgraves

“A lot changed when I met Ruston, [love] songs just started coming out, but [before] I met him, I was like, it’s not clicking, I’m not going to find my person, and you know, I felt like I didn’t deserve it, to be honest,” Musgraves told the New York City crowd as her band returned to the stage. “It’s really cool that a change of events can happen and it’s cool to see that love can really spring up at any place”, she said, starting up the Golden Hour cut “Love Is A Wild Thing”.

Magic seemed to be all around during Musgraves’ set. While an incredible performer, she is a poet first, and it was a treat for any fan to watch her explain her stories. She brought light and honesty to everyone on a weeknight, and her set was like entering an alternate universe. Once in this “world”, no one wanted to leave.

Kelly wasn’t the only surprise of the night. During her cover of the iconic, “I Will Survive”, the one and only Gloria Gaynor joined Musgraves onstage. “Gloria Gaynor, the queen of disco!” Musgraves shouted. Gaynor had nothing but kind words to say about Musgraves, telling the audience, “I recorded this song in 1975, forty years ago, and I can’t tell you how pleased I am that Kacey is carrying on the tradition, helping you all to survive”.

In a time where people constantly disagreeing with one another, music is there to help humans survive. No one knew each other, swaying to Musgraves’ glow, but together, they were a community of people sustained by stories. It’s a pretty powerful sentiment, and this showed on lighter songs like “High Time” and on heavier songs like “Rainbow”. Music is a healer, and Musgraves is leading that revolution.

The final song in Musgraves’ set was upbeat psychedelic-country jam “High Horse”, and there was not a single person standing still at that moment. “I want to see you jump!” She told the dancing audience while confetti and lasers decorated the stage. It was the perfect end to a perfect show.

In 2019, genres aside, it’s rare to see a true singer-songwriter reach this many people. Musgraves captivated the audience, some old and some new fans, with her storytelling and raw vocals, and she brought such joy to Manhattan. In the words of the queen of yeehaw herself, “Oh what a world / I don’t want to leave / All kinds of magic all around us it’s hard to believe / Thank god it’s not too good to be true / Oh what a world”.

NYCS First Impression Brooks & Dunn Feature New Artists On ‘REBOOT’

Brooks & Dunn REBOOT

Making their old hits new, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn have gotten together with some of country music’s hottest acts to repurpose and reimagine their biggest songs in the new album REBOOT. It has been over a decade since the best selling duo of all time released new music and exactly 10 years since they released anything at all, their last album #1s…and then some was a compilation of their hits.

For fans who are new to loving the genre, they may not be familiar with the duo or any of their songs however Brooks & Dunn have shaped the landscape of country music and helped cultivate and influence the artists that you know and love today. This new project allows fans of Kane Brown, Luke Combs, Ashley McBryde and so many more really dig into these tracks otherwise may have been lost on them.

Released first and prior to the full album, Luke Combs and Kane Brown’s contributions (“Brand New Man” and “Believe”) gave fans a taste of what to expect from REBOOT, without changing the songs melodically, they breathed new life into them.  “What’s really intriguing to me is that we didn’t do any production meetings about how we might cut these things,” Kix Brooks said in a recent press release. “We kind of just went in, and it morphed in the process.”

Choosing which songs out of their twenty, that’s right twenty number one hits, couldn’t have been easy but each track shows a different side of the duo’s outstanding discography. A standout on the record is “Ain’t Nothin’ Bout You” which features Brett Young’s soulful and sultry vocals. Young starts the song with the familiar lyrics, sonically slowing things down to accentuate the words, changing things just a bit, instead of singing to the girl, they are singing about her to each other. The addition of a saxophone solo adds a sexy spunk to the vibe, making this track one of the best on the record.

Currently one of the most talked about country acts, Kacey Musgraves who humbly took home Album of the Year at this year’s Grammy Awards is featured on “Neon Moon”. Her sweet voice highlights the buzzing neon signs in bars that will always welcome you back when experiencing heartbreak.  The decision to have a female voice adds so much to the two tracks on the record, the ACM New Female of the Year Ashley McBryde adds her grit and unique vocals to “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone”.

Possibly one of their most popular songs, “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” is energized by Grammy-nominated Midland who’s debut album is filled with songs just like their cover for REBOOT. Their version is perfect for dance halls and bars across America.

While every song on the record is an absolute proven gem, when Texas native, Cody Johnson starts off the last chorus alone on “Red Dirt Road” over a quiet acoustic guitar, it will make you fall in love with the song that has been a classic since its release in 2003.

It was just recently revealed that Brooks & Dunn will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame later this year. Making timeless hits brand new again, fans Brooks & Dunn and fans of these modern day country artists will have a record to blast for years to come.

To keep up with Brooks & Dunn, follow them on InstagramTwitter, and Facebook.

REBOOT is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Musgraves swept the 2019 Grammys, winning the most awards of the night, Best Country Album, Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Song and the biggest award, Album Of The Year for Golden Hour.

Giving an exclusive sneak peek of the video she created with the director, Hannah Lux Davis. When asked to talk about the concept of the video, Musgraves mentioned, “The song started out as kind of a memo to myself but it’s really just for anybody who’s going through any kind of anything and the video is kind of just representative of your own mental garden kind of just overtaking you.”

The video is breathtaking, showing Musgraves engulfed in a warm glowing light looking as angelic as ever. She is seen singing in between scenes of different people struggling through life including, a single mother taking care of her child, a young man coming out to his parents, and a man suffering from alcoholism. As the scenes play out, each person eventually finds their inner peace showing a rainbow spreading over their heads. Ending the video with Musgraves sitting in a room filled with colorful flowers underneath a majestic rainbow, showing that life has a way of working itself out in the end.

Grammy Award-winning country singer, Kacey Musgraves took over television Tuesday (Oct. 2) on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with her epic performance of “Love Is a Wild Thing”, off her fourth major label studio album ‘Golden Hour’. Find our ‘First Impression’ review of the album here.

Although not yet introduced as the singer-songwriter’s single, “Love Is  a Wild Thing” is one of the many standout tracks on the latest record. The song embodies Musgraves’ light, playful, and honest artistry. Kimmel excitedly announced the singer’s performance as part of the ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live Concert Series’ sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, sharing, “This is her album! It’s called Golden Hour. Here with her song, “Love Is A Wild Thing,” Kacey Musgraves!” as fans erupted into applause.

Musgraves graced the outdoor stage on Hollywood Boulevard, guitar in hand, giving off ethereal vibes and mesmerizing the audience with her angelic voice. Backed by a six piece band, all dressed in retro suits, the Texas native performed her beautiful song with so much poise and heart.

The elegant fantasy setting resonated with fans and carried over into the background. As Musgraves continued her seemingly effortless performance, the background transformed into a pink-hued fall setting with bubbles floating around.

Check out the performance in the video above, then check out a bonus performance of Musgraves’ “Wonder Woman”, which was not aired during the show in the video below.

Musgraves embarks on her world tour, ‘Oh, What a World: Tour,’ early 2019 beginning in Indianapolis, Indiana, with many shows already selling out. NYCS First Impression: Kacey Musgraves Sparks Ethereal Wonder on ‘Golden Hour’

Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour

Kacey Musgraves is a Grammy winner who writes and creates songs that are important for this generation and for the country genre.  While her sophomore album Pageant Material focused more on her hometown of Golden, Texas and the ups and downs of growing up in such a small town, Golden Hour is focused more on love, her place on this planet and even a little bit of 70’s disco flair.

From the opening track “Slow Burn” to the LSD fueled “Mother” and the closing track “Rainbow” the entire project is luminous, airy, and meaningful.  When listening to Golden Hour, you can almost see the sounds and feel the colors that she wanted to portray.  In fact, earlier this week she hosted her album listening party at a planetarium in Nashville and each song had its own psychedelic, starry-filled video to accompany the track.  The last single and instant gratification song released to those who pre-ordered the album, “High Horse” is nostalgic of the disco era, lava lamps and the word “boogie”.

Her vocals flit and float over the melodies especially in “Rainbow” and one of the first singles off the project “Butterflies”, which our team got to see her perform live when she opened for Little Big Town at Radio City Music Hall.   As a new bride, Musgraves seems to have a new appreciation for the brilliant feeling when you find the one your heart longs for.

Though many of the songs are light and playful, she stays true to her artistry in never shying away from raw, honest subjects in her music. “Happy and Sad” zeros its focus in on always waiting for the other shoe to drop, not appreciating the good things because of fear of the bad.  “Space Cowboy” one of the strongest, somber songs of the entire project was released the same day as the love song “Butterflies” proving that on this project both love, sadness, and breakup can live peacefully.

Golden Hour is a true masterpiece, weaving delicate lyrics into stories, laced over some of the most unique and colorful melodies.  Grab your copy of Golden Hour on iTunes or listen below:
