Jennifer Nettles & Leslie Fram #EqualPlay Conversation With BlogHer

Leslie Fram Jennifer Nettles BlogHer

Ingrid Andress’ debut single, “More Hearts Than Mine”, is sitting pretty at number one this week while Gabby Barrett’s debut, “I Hope” hit the top spot last week. Carly Pearce’s duet with Lee Brice is at #8 and recently went gold; Maren Morris’ “The Bones” is still at #10, despite going #1 over two months ago. That’s a lot of well-deserved good news for women in country music, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any problems remaining, and that more change isn’t needed. On Friday, April 24th, BlogHer hosted CMT’s Leslie Fram and award-winning singer/songwriter/actress/activist Jennifer Nettles to discuss the #EqualPlay movement and what it’s like to be a woman in the music industry. The two are longtime friends and champions of each other and have done so much to make the conversation as loud as it is now.

Fram started off by discussing Nettles’ iconic 2019 CMA Awards outfit. “You made a bold statement on the CMA red carpet. I think your statement really created a conversation and a movement,” Fram said to a nodding Nettles. “It was a moment that turned into a movement,” Nettles replied. “I was really moved by the idea that [the CMAs were honoring women], but at the same time, I wanted to make sure the truth was shown. I didn’t want [the CMAs] to pat themselves on the back, think ‘look at how we support women’ when the numbers and data do not reflect said support. I wanted to take action beyond the stage.”

Both Fram and Nettles have taken action beyond the stage. From CMT’s pledge to play men and women equally to the op-eds Nettles has had the opportunity to write, the two of them have been paving the way for female artists everywhere. According to both women, 16% of terrestrial airplay is taken up by female artists, and on streaming services like Spotify, the number is even lower: 9%. “When I hear those numbers… it feels like we’re 9% away from being erased,” Nettles said.

Country radio’s problems may not be totally solved, but they are moving in the right direction. New York’s local station, NY Country 94.7, has been noticeably playing more women per hour, and every Tuesday they play back-to-back women. While this is all positive, why is it that four women can’t be played back-to-back every day? Nettles thinks part of it comes down to technology. “In the way streaming makes a certain song explode, computers take bias and prejudice and take it to this larger scale.” This, she thinks, is part of the reason radio is the way it is.

“Is there a way out of this? How can artists take back ownership? What more can we do?” Fram asked, dumbfounded. “We need to support each other. People are taking pledges. We are not going to be a part of any festival or writes without [higher percentages of] women entertainers. There has been a lot of appetite for this right now,” Nettles responded confidently.

It’s hopeful to see so much mainstream conversation extending beyond Nashville surrounding the Equal Play movement. Fram and Nettles are two people who are absolutely committed to changing the conversation and continuing to make waves wherever they go. But as both women mentioned, numbers have to change. What we can do is keep supporting art and engaging in conversation that may sometimes feel uncomfortable or repetitive, but in the long run, it will be the thing that makes radio change.

Jennifer Nettles’ Powerful Video for “I Can Do Hard Things”

On Friday morning, Jennifer Nettles debuted her video for “I Can Do Hard Things” on NBC’s Today Show. The video is powerful and profound – it includes real people talking about their struggles and overcoming them. The stripped down, black and white filtered video is a perfect backdrop to the raw emotion and purity that each of these women displays.

The video shares the stories of eight strong and resilient women (details below). The song lyrics address that things are not always easy, but that doesn’t mean we can’t overcome the struggles; that’s part of what makes us who we are. We are continually growing as women every day and each situation pushes us to be the person we will become. “I can laugh and I can love and I can dream” despite the challenges. If this isn’t a perfect message for women in today’s society, we don’t know what is!

Courtesy of YouTube, here are the details on these wonderful women :

Jamie Combs: A former business owner and stylist, she’s an advocate for the transgender community, as well as a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Morgan Leigh Garner: A singer/songwriter, mother, and an Army wife. She is raising her family, chasing her music dreams and holding down the home front as her husband serves our country as a Special Forces Soldier.

Kate Davis: A photographer who also works as a Chief of Staff for an actress/activist, she’s adopting a baby as a proud single woman.

Audrey Ynigez-Gutierrez: A graduate research assistant, she is a caregiver to her disabled mother.

Holly Gleason: Journalist and consultant, she has spent the last two years quietly battling the profound aftermath of a Me Too sexual assault.

Ali Harnell: A high-level career concert and event promoter, she has been chosen as the President of Live Nation’s Woman Nation to empower women in the entertainment industry.

Danielle Randolph: An active firefighter and member of the National Guard, she challenges perceptions of women in male-dominated industries.

Caroline Randall Williams: Award-winning poet, performance artist, and food writer creating art that tells the untold stories of women of color in her life and in the world.

“When you share your own story, you own your power. And when you own your power, it is harder for someone to take it from you,” said Nettles in a recent press release. “When you share in community, you protect each other’s power and that makes it even harder for someone to take it from you.” Watch the uplifting video above.

Jennifer Nettles Opens Up on New Single “I Can Do Hard Things”

Jennifer Nettles

Jennifer Nettles debuted her brand new single “I Can Do Hard Things,” and it is spoken directly from her heart, based upon life experiences and the ups and downs of womanhood. In an essay published on Medium, Nettles writes “This song for me is a truth-telling, a bloodletting, a real-life heart opening to what it means to be a grown woman. It is my offering to honor the reality that, as I like to say, “everything is everything.”

As she shares the trials and tribulations of what eventually led and encouraged her to write her first solo song since 2017, much of the inspiration was driven by reading the book “Love Warrior” by Glennon Doyle Melton. Nettles explained, “Within her story, she shared that while indeed life can be hard, we are “made for hard things” just as much as we are made for joyous, easy ones.”

Nettles gracefully sings about resilience unveiled in a beautifully written delicate ballad that can tug on one’s heartstrings. “I Can Do Hard Things” is an authentic gift as Nettles’ wows once again with her unbelievable vocals and words that illustrate the strength women often showcase and how we are strong enough to overcome the challenging times. She passionately sings, “It’s a lot to look at all that I got/It’s a lot to see who I am and am not/But I can laugh and I can love and I can dream/And I can do hard things,” and that is nothing short of moving.

Since the reunion with Kristan Bush of Sugarland, Nettles has announced she will be joining music sensation Josh Groban on his Bridges 2019 tour which is coming to NYCB Live: Home Of The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on June 15th. Check out Nettles’ new song below along with her essay published on Medium.

This has been the year of mixing genres for song collaborations. From The Chainsmokers with Kelsea Ballerini to Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha, combining musical acts has proven to have mainstream success. Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles combined her talents with Pop music sensation Josh Groban in a new song off his newly released studio album Bridges entitled “99 Years.”

Nettles took the stage on LIVE With Kelly & Ryan for the second time this year with a  new duo partner, Groban. Early Friday morning (Sept 21), the duo performed “99 Years” for a live studio audience. The singers showcased their vast talents and extraordinary voices in the love song.

“Will we look back down on 99 years of a wonderful life / Where we laughed till we cried and our love was stronger with every fight / There’ll be a thousand moments for you to say ‘I told you’ / And a million more for us to say ‘I love you’/ So let’s look forward to you and I look back / At 99 years like that”

The songstress took to Twitter the day before, to remind fans not to miss the television performance, “Tomorrow, I’m singing a beautiful song called “99 Years” with a lovely human called [Josh Groban], to celebrate the release of his new album … Set your alarm. Set your DVR. Set your intentions. Set your curls.”

If you missed the stellar performance, check it out here. The song is available everywhere you buy or stream music today.

Nettles just wrapped up her Sugarland “Still the Same Tour,” with duet partner Kristian Bush earlier this month. Currently, there are no additional tour dates.

Sugarland’s ‘Still the Same Tour’ feat. Frankie Ballard & Lindsay Ell

Sugarland Still the Same Tour

New York and New Jersey fans alike headed to the Prudential Center on Saturday night to witness the captivating musical duo Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush of Sugarland perform their second to last show on the ‘Still the Same Tour,’ accompanied by openers, Lindsay Ell and Frankie Ballard.

Sugarland Still the Same Tour

Powerhouse, Lindsay Ell took the stage first, sharing with the crowd that this will be her last performance on the tour. She entertained fans with songs like “Waiting on You” and “Champagne”. The singer ended her set with her top 20 single, “Criminal,” co-written by Bush, just after expressing her gratitude to the fans. “Thank you, everyone and country radio for changing my life with this song. This is”Criminal” y’all!”

After a short intermission, Frankie Ballard and his Wildcat Band energetically took the stage. Pumping up the crowd throughout the entire performance, Ballard’s set was the perfect combination of his smash hits, cover songs, and engaging moments with the crowd. Singing his hits, “Helluva Night,” “It All Started with a Beer,” “Sunshine and Whiskey,” and “Young & Crazy,” the singer’s funky style and electric demeanor was evident.

One of the most charming moments with the entertainer was when he admitted to the audience that he “missed [his] spot in that verse,” laughing, while stating, “When they [singers] say ‘How’s everyone feeling out there,’ it’s just a way of covering up their tracks.” Between, Ballard’s humbleness, his image, and his artistry, fans showed their love for the performer the entire set.

The incredible night of music continued, as the stage lit up with a colorful, carnival-like backdrop, unveiling the headliners of the night, Sugarland, as they jammed to their title track “Bigger” off their recently released album. Their set featured an impressive 20 songs, including their most recent single “Babe,” and hits, “Stay,” “It Happens,” “Stuck Like You,” and “Lean It On Back,” with two more songs for the encore performance.

Additionally, Nettles and Bush, each took time to discuss their solo projects, that were worked on, during the duo’s 5-year hiatus. Bush sang his fun-loving single, “Trailer Hitch,” while Nettles belted her ballad “Unlove You.” The crowd was clearly loving both, as they sang, swayed, and snapped along to each performance.

Sugarland’s night was filled with highlights, such as their fun mash-up of their song “On a Roll” with Funkadelic’s “We Want The Funk” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” where Ell entered the stage on roller-skates, poking fun at the lyrics from “On a Roll.” The fans loved the impromptu end-of-tour prank and interaction Ell had on stage with the duo.

Sugarland Still the Same Tour

However, the night was stolen by the beautiful message that was inspired by the fan favorite song “Little Miss” from The Incredible Machine. The singers showcased a fan-made video for The Little Miss Project. The powerful message of The Little Miss Project is to start a dialogue that an individual is never truly alone. Supporting this mission, Sugarland utilized their musical platform to partner with World Vision in efforts to raise money for disadvantaged youth, even stopping to take a photo (on stage) with fans, who donated to the cause. Nettles shared “It’s a reminder that sometimes we have to slow down and save a life … It’ll be alright again.”

Sugarland truly brought their own level of talent and artistry to New Jersey, it was  an unforgettable night for fans of all ages, who were lucky to attend.

Jennifer Nettles’ Poignant 9/11 Tribute “King of the City”

King of the City by Jennifer Nettles

Today, 16 years after the tragic events that took place on September 11th, 2001, Americans all over the nation reflect on where they were when they heard the news.  Grammy award winning country singer Jennifer Nettles is putting a fresh new narrative in place, releasing “King of the City”, inspired by an immigrant window washer who’s life was lost that day.

“That day in September / I’ll always remember / Started out just like the rest / I was floor 26 when the first plane hit / And I still feel that sound in my chest/ “It’s true I wasn’t born here / But my heart is sworn here / To hold up your dreams with my own / That day on my porch / I made it to church / And I prayed for each soul to fly home.”

The story unfolds as strings and Nettle’s voice crescendos, creating a beautiful testament to all of the fallen victims. Hear “King of the City” below and purchase the single on AmazonApple Music, and iTunes.
