HunterGirl: ‘Tennessee Girl’ – Debut EP Review

HunterGirl shares her debut EP, Tennessee Girl, out now, June 7th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new project below.

After coming in second on Season 20 of American Idol and making her Grand Ole Opry debut earlier this year, country starlet HunterGirl is ready to make a statement with her debut label EP, Tennessee Girl, out now. Released through 19 Recordings/BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville, the EP features six new tracks written or co-written by the rising star.

For the project, HunterGirl, née Tristyn Hunter Wolkonowski, enlisted co-writers that included Lindsay Rimes, Joybeth Taylor, David Fanning, Andy Sheridan, and more. The collection is inspired by the likes of Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Kelly Clarkson, and P!NK, showing the young singer-songwriter’s versatility and range as she effortlessly floats between the rocking uptempo of “Bad Boy” to the vulnerability of her first single, “Ain’t About You.”

Tennessee Girl shows the different sides of my personality. I separate songs into two categories in my head, Blue Jean and Leather Jacket songs. Blue Jean songs are the ones I write in my bedroom opening my diary to the world. Leather Jacket songs are where I want to feel tougher and have fun,” She shares in a statement. “Most people have only seen the Blue Jean side of my personality, but with this 6-song EP, I have the chance to show the full picture of me as an artist.”

“Bad Decisions” kicks off the album, leaning more leather jacket than blue jean as the singer admits that, like most twenty-somethings, she’s great at making bad decisions. Whether it’s having a few too many or choosing the wrong guy, it’s an utterly relatable anthem for any girl who’s ever been there. “I guess I’m good at making bad decisions,” she muses over roaring guitars and catchy pop beats. “Raise it up if you’re with me, let’s make a memory we might forget.”

Similarly, “Bad Boy” finds her dealing with those bad decisions, this time in the form of men. She’s looking for a tattooed, guitar-slinging bad boy that her daddy won’t approve of. It’s driving pop-rock-country that finds the Tennessee native attracted to guys who are no good and no good for her. With Kelly Clarkson-meets-PINK sensibilities, the track is a roaring gem of a crowd pleaser.

“Yeah I know my daddy’s gonna really hate this song // Yeah I got it bad for someone bad for me // You can really kiss // I can barely breathe // Only kind of crazy // I could  ever need // And it’ll only be good, only be good to me… I really got it bad for a bad boy”

While HunterGirl can rock and roar with the best of them, the singer-songwriter truly shines on her more vulnerable ballads. Case in point: her single, “Ain’t About You.” Here, she deals with her own insecurities faced in the pursuit of her dreams, contemplating if she should give up. “It was the most honest and vulnerable I’d ever been in a song,” she reveals to Billboard. “I wrote it in my bedroom and never thought anyone would hear it. That song and people’s reception to it changed my songwriting because I realized people needed to hear the not-so-pretty parts of your life, the really hard things I was scared to say. After that it made choosing [songs for] the EP so much easier, because I’m like, ‘I’m just going to be myself and hopefully, it touches somebody else out there.’”

Likewise, “Clockworks” is a clear standout, a special and introspective ballad about the passage of time, and how you can never get it back. Do you hear that? There goes another second that you can’t get back, take it from me, She begins, immediately grabbing a listener’s attention as she sings about her grandfather as he battles with memory loss. “It’s like waking up one day full grown, and all you want is to put time in reverse, but that ain’t how the clock works.”

The EP ends with another clear standout, “Pretty Much,” which finds her grappling with the insecurities that are common among many women of all ages. Here, she ponders “If pretty is as pretty does/then who the hell decided what pretty was? And if perfect’s in, then count me out, ‘Cause I got better things that I can think about, there are days in the mirror when I don’t feel like enough, but I’m getting pretty good at not thinking ‘bout… pretty much.” Much like “Ain’t About You,” “Pretty Much” is an empowering anthem that once again finds her dealing with self-doubt and overcoming.

For HunterGirl, her new EP, Tennessee Girl, truly allows the rising star to showcase all sides of her personality from feisty firecracker to vulnerable chanteuse, and everything in between.

HunterGirl Shares Brand New Song “Ain’t About You”

HunterGirl shares new song, “Ain’t About You,” out now, August 11th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

American Idol favorite, HunterGirl is back with more new music that will surely resonate with her fans across the country. While HunterGirl can definitely sing a sassy song, she shines the brightest in her honest and vulnerable songs. Her new song, “Ain’t About You” fits the bill.

“Ain’t About You” is HunterGirl’s honest portrayal of feeling lost in her career. During a low point in her career, prior to American Idol, HunterGirl found herself having a conversation with God about what to do next. Eventually, she took pen to paper, and this song is what organically fell out. It depicts how when you zoom out and think about the larger picture and all the people you could be imprinting on, magic can happen and the fight is worth it.

“You always used to smile when you held your guitar // Now it feels like a reminder that you ain’t got too far // Strumming strings used to feel like breathing // Now it takes your breath away // Counting years // Counting reasons why it won’t work // But what if it does // What if tomorrow all those closed doors open // But if you give up // if you give in // You should know that you’re not the only one whose losing // What if there’s a little girl who needs a song // Telling her she’s beautiful // when the world tells her she’s wrong”

HunterGirl showcases exactly why America fell in love with her in this song. The track is exactly what country music needs more of. “Ain’t About You” is quite possibly the songstress’ best song to date!

Noah Thompson & HunterGirl Collab on New Version of “One Day Tonight”

Noah Thompson and HunterGirl collaborate on a new version “One Day Tonight,” out now, April 23rd, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

American Idol stars, Noah Thompson and HunterGirl are giving fans what they want and collaborating! In celebration of Thompson’s iconic debut single, “One Day Tonight,” the twosome are reimagining the track. The catchy and romantic song gets a new spin, featuring the voices of both Thompson and HunterGirl.

The singers trade verses in the reimagined version of the swoon-worthy track. While Thompson’s version is heartfelt and raw, the new rendition feels complete, getting the perspective of both lovers in the song. “One Day Tonight” is the perfect background song to your love story. We can see this rendition becoming popular both on social media and at future weddings.

“She wants a wedding in September // Saved up all winter // Spend our summers in a fixer upper in Denver // She wants a girl and a boy and an // Old dog named Old Roy // Lord, I hope this old boy can give her that life // So go home girl // Pour a glass of wine // And dream out loud, talk about one day tonight”

Once again, Thompson and HunterGirl prove that they have a magical connection to one another. American Idol may have brought them together as friends and collaborators, but it is clear that these two will continue to be each other’s biggest cheerleaders. While Thompson and HunterGirl will continue to release their own music going forward, we hope there is another collaboration in the future too!

HunterGirl Shares New Song “Lonely Outta You”

HunterGirl shares brand new song “Lonely Outta You,” out now, March 31st, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

American Idol sweetheart and talent, HunterGirl is sharing more new music with her growing fanbase. Back in October, the singer-songwriter made her major-label debut with her song “Hometown Out Of Me.” Today, the songstress is releasing her new song, “Lonely Outta You.”

The singer’s brand new song is a touching song about trying to help someone you love release their fear of falling in love. Instead of singing about heartbreak from a first-person narrative, HunterGirl shares the story of what it would be like to help someone else learn to love again after heartbreak. It is a true testament of love and patience can cure anything.

“That don’t mean that they don’t hold no wait // Tell me who got you believing // that loving somebody ain’t safe // I don’t think that you need fixing // I just know would be different // Looking in your eyes, if you let me hide // I want to love the lonely outta you”

HunterGirl is a true talent in the Nashville music scene. She creates music that is clearly from the heart, drawing from her own experiences and years of songwriting in the songwriting community in Music City. “Lonely Outta You” is a great song to add to her growing catalog of music.

Current City – Nashville, Tennessee
Music Influences – Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Julia Michaels

The Beginning:

Today’s spotlight is shining on a budding artist that you may already know and love: HunterGirl. She blew people away on American Idol, but the singer-songwriter has been cutting her teeth in the music industry since she was a little girl. Learn about how her story has unfolded in our conversation below.

Growing up in East Tennessee, HunterGirl always loved music. “I grew up 5 minutes from my grandparents growing up, so I would go to their house all the time. I would hear Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash. I grew up loving – I wanted to be exactly like Dolly growing up,” shared the songstress. She recalls singing at church, at county fairs, and at talent shows for as long as she could remember, drawing inspiration from some of her favorite artists.

“Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire were the two women in country music that I was like, “oh my gosh, I love their music and their songwriting, but I really just love who they are as people.” […] I wanted to be an artist like that,” shared HunterGirl, adding later, “I listened to everything growing up. My mom loved P!NK, so I loved the tough, gritty songs, and my dad listened to rock music, so I had a lot of influence growing up from all sorts of genres, and the first band I ever sang in was a blues band.”

When she was barely in high school, HunterGirl joined her first band. “Whenever I turned fourteen, I joined a band and started traveling around everywhere, my parents brought me everywhere.” Then, at eighteen, she immediately moved to Nashville.

The Turning Point:

While attending college, HunterGirl started making a name for herself in Nashville, playing shows on Broadway, seven days a week. “I would have 8AM classes, and I would play 6-2AM, and get ready for my morning classes. I would sleep for a few hours and write songs, and do anything I could to try to get better and make it in music one day,” shared the songstress.

While in Nashville, HunterGirl worked hard to hone her craft as both a singer and as a songwriter. “I always had that dream and my family was super supportive. They were like if you want to do this, you’re going to have to work really, really hard for it.” She added later, “I love the songwriting community here in Nashville […] A songwriter and artist that I really look up to is Julia Michaels. I also love Ashley McBryde [and] Brantley Gilbert.”

By happenstance, after auditioning in her youth, HunterGirl received an email to audition for American Idol. Despite that, it was not until being approached at one of her shows later in the week that she actually decided to take the plunge. “A girl came up to me at the end of the show and was like ‘hey I used to be a producer on Idol, and I really think you should audition this year.’ And I was like Oh my gosh, twice in two days. Okay, God I get your sign, I’m going to go for it and see what happens,” shared the singer.

Of course, American Idol ended up being a great experience for the singer-songwriter. She achieved the runner-up spot in her season.

Today:

Flash forward to today, now as a signed artist, HunterGirl is living her dream. She gets to create music that touches fans all over the world, something she has always desired. “Songwriting is the place where I get everything out of my head. It’s my therapy with a guitar, she began. “I want to write songs that help people and get them through those rough singles, like my first single, “Red Bird.” It was a heart song.”

Her most recent single, “Hometown Out Of Me” is also a heart song. “‘Hometown Out Of Me’ was a big thank you to my hometown.” HunterGirl added later, “I always wanted to write a song for my hometown […] My hometown supported me ever since I was a little girl playing in the town square […] And then would have watch parties every Sunday, whenever I was on the show, cheering me on.”

This is only just the beginning for the rising artist. She will continue to play shows and write new music as we head into the new year. “I wake up every day, and I”m like “oh my gosh is this real?!” Because I wanted to do this ever since I was a little girl.” It is not lost on HunterGirl how incredible her journey has been and will continue to be!

HunterGirl Makes Major Label Debut with “Hometown Out Of Me”

HunterGirl’s debut song, “Hometown Out Of Me” is out now, October 21st, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand-new track below.

After winning the heart of America on American Idol, HunterGirl is ready to make her label debut. While many new artists choose to release radio-ready, ‘safe’ songs, HunterGirl is choosing to use her newfound spotlight to thank her hometown. Her new song “Hometown Out Of Me” is everything you want it to be.

“My hometown has supported my dream since I was little and especially through this crazy year of my life. I wanted my first single following the show to be a thank you card to my hometown. The reason I get to chase my dream is because of the amazing people who have supported me. No matter where this journey takes me, I will never forget where I came from,” shared the singer-songwriter in a recent press release.

Although personal and truthful to HunterGirl, “Hometown Out Of Me” is a story anyone can relate to. It is all about knowing where you come from and remembering the people who have supported you all along on your journey, no matter where it led you.

“I’m never gonna not think heaven’s at the end of daddy’s little gravel road // I’m never gonna not be the same old same me everybody back there knows // An apple’s still an apple when it’s nowhere near the tree // You can take me out of my hometown but you can’t take my hometown out of me // Maybe you ain’t scared of crashing // When you’ve got a place to land  // You can hear it in my accent // That somebody gave a damn”

This is just the beginning for HunterGirl. We look forward to seeing where she lands next!
