The Beginning:

This week, we chatted with singer-songwriter Drew Baldridge about all he has endured in the music industry over his decade long career in country music. Baldridge shared his story in a relatable and inspiring way. Keep reading to learn more.

“I grew up in a little town called Patoka, Illinois in Southern Illinois [on a farm],” began the singer. “I grew up playing in church and took piano lessons when I was really young and picked up guitar when I was sixteen, got hooked, and started playing at all the local bars around my hometown.”

Because of his country lifestyle, Baldridge naturally gravitated towards both gospel music and country music. When it comes to country music, the singer recalls feeling seen by the artists of his generation. Some of his first loves were artists like Alabama and Josh Turner.

“I lived country music songs everyday, and I didn’t really realize it, but I loved listening to it because they were songs about me, songs about where I came from. I didn’t realize it, but when I started writing songs that’s kind of what came out, songs about my little town, songs about the heartbreak I was going through, songs about the backroads, all that stuff.”

The Turning Point:

Upon graduating high school, at just nineteen years old, Baldridge made the move to Nashville, Tennessee. Almost instantly, the singer hit the ground running, performing at bars on Broadway like Tootsie’s. In 2012, the singer earned his first publishing deal, which catapulted into more fans and eventually a record deal.

“I started touring all around the country, and then around 2015, 2016 we signed our first record deal, and I thought I made it. […] Then we put out a couple of songs and none of them really took to radio. Couldn’t get anything up the charts, and it was disheartening to say the least,” shared Baldridge candidly about this journey.

Later, in 2019, the singer put out a batch of songs, including one which he sent to radio. “We put out a song to radio, and I thought it was going to be it. […] My label closed down 3 months later, and I thought ‘Man, I’m going to hop right into a new record deal,’ but that wasn’t really my story, no one was interested in signing me, and then COVID hit, and I was one of those artists that was viewed as one who had a shot, but it didn’t work out.”

Despite the hardships, Baldridge’s journey of perseverance continued. “2020 was a hard year because I lost pretty much everything in that time, and I didn’t know what to do. I had this song in 2019 called “Senior Year,” and suddenly all these Senior high school kids around the country started using the song in their TikTok’s. I thought I had to do something.”

The singer began offering Zoom concerts to anyone who wanted them for the class of 2020 graduates. This catapulted into being invited to play by schools in person for social-distancing events, as well as, radio picking up his song “Senior Year.”

Despite this success, Baldridge still was not making a living from music. He decided to put out a video offering to play a show in anyone’s backyard. “I thought I’d get five or ten shows, but we ended up getting 20 something thousand messages, so I went around the country for two or three years, and played in over 300 people’s backyards, just me and a guitar.

During all that time, Baldridge was posting on social media. “I ended up getting married, and I had this song called “She’s Somebody’s Daughter,” and it was my wife’s favorite, so I made a wedding version just so she could dance to it with her dad on our wedding night,” he shared Adding, “We went on our honeymoon. And I woke up the next day with over ten million views on the song.”

Today:

Flash forward to today, “She’s Somebody’s Daughter” is officially the first country song put out by an independent artist to hit the top spot on the country radio charts. By believing in himself, creating his own record label, and hiring staff, the singer-songwriter was able to accomplish something incredible with an incredible song.

“I’m overwhelmed and incredibly honored that ‘She’s Somebody’s Daughter’ has reached No. 1. on country radio,” he shard in a press release. “I wrote this song six years ago and though I always dreamed we would get to this point, it felt so far away. In my heart, I knew ‘Daughter’ was special, and just needed the right team to help me share it with country radio and fans everywhere. I am so thankful to everyone who has supported me and believed in me over the years. This is truly the best day.”

Heading into the rest of this year, Baldridge has a ton of tour dates and more music coming down the pipeline, as long as fans continue to want them. “I try to put out real songs, and it’s been fun over the last couple of years to be able to be myself and not have to put on any different face,” shared the singer.

Stay tuned for more music and checkout the tour dates here!

Drew Baldridge’s New Song “Stay at Home Dad” Celebrates Fatherhood

Drew Baldridge’s new song “Stay At Home Dad” is available now, June 18th, on all streaming platforms. Check out the track below as we dig a little deeper into the new song.

A dad is a daughter’s first love and a son’s first best friend. They are the person who teaches you how to ride a bike, they’re there when you catch your first fish, and the person you can always rely on to play catch. They are also the ones who bend over backwards for their family, no questions asked. Even when sometimes that means saying no to staying home and enjoying those special moments, but we know how much they love us even when they have to leave for work or go do the things they have to do to provide for their family.

Written by Baldridge with Tyler Chambers, Dylan Marlowe, and Nick Schwarz, “Stay At Home Dad” uses clever wordplay to celebrate fatherhood and reminisces of all of those moments where we just wanted our father figure to stay at home with us. The track reminds us all that dads are truly superheroes.

“Stay at home dad // Don’t ya wanna go fishin’ // Throw the ball out in the back // If you do I’ll do the dishes // Me and mamma will miss you bad // I’ll be the man til you get back // If it ain’t too much to ask, stay at home dad”

The ballad shows the incredible range of vocals and talent the Illinois native has. He continues to show us how much the people in his life mean to him with each new release as he shares genuine memories of the people he loves.

Baldridge first surprised fans with the track on TikTok in January where he shared a sweet video of previewing the song with his dad on his birthday. TikTok has become a popular platform for Baldridge as he has been sharing his new tracks asking his fans if he should release them, including the song, “She’s Somebody’s Daughter”¸which his wife and her father danced to at their wedding.  The two married earlier this year.

Drew Baldridge Releases The Perfect Love Song, “That’s You”

Perfect timing for Valentine’s Day Weekend, Drew Baldridge released his song “That’s You”. Available everywhere where you buy and stream music. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new track.

Written by Baldridge and Trannie Anderson, “That’s You” is a sweet love song showing appreciation to the singer-songwriter’s fiancé Katie. While quarantine has brought a lot of uncertainty, it also taught us some valuable lessons including showing us the importance of having that support system in your life, whether that’s a significant other, family, or friends.  It shares a message of no matter what you’re going through, there’s always going to be that one person you can count on and can’t afford to lose.

In a recent press release, Baldridge shared how the song came to life. “I had the melody for that chorus in my head for a long time and just kept singing ‘That’s You’ at the end of it,” said Baldridge. “I didn’t know what it meant until I got with Trannie and she brought the idea to life! Then we started writing the lyrics inspired by my fiancée. I was so excited about the song, I put it on TikTok before we even made it to the studio to record it.”

Baldridge first shared the track with fans on social media. With 2 million views on TikTok and another 2 million views on Instagram, the Illinois native knew the song had to be recorded ASAP.

“Strongest weakness\My swear I’m bulletproof\ My live on the edge\My rock I’m clinging to\My sweetest sin, my do me in, my heaven sent, Hail Mary prayer\My one I’d rather be down deep six feet than have to lose\That’s you.”

Baldridge is no stranger to his songs going viral. Last year, his song “Senior Year” landed on the Billboard and Mediabase Country Charts thanks to the fans’ engagement on social media and the connection it had with graduating seniors. He even had the opportunity to play at a few socially distant Graduations.

5 Undiscovered Male Artists You Should Be Listening To

We are loving how the country music genre continues to grow and develop. As a platform, we believe it’s important to promote and support megastars, rising artists, and independent artists in the industry. There is so much rising talent in Nashville that we look forward to continuing to champion.

Here are five of our current favorite undiscovered male country artists that we know you’ll love…

1. Adam Doleac
LISTEN: “Famous”

We had to start off this list with one of our current favorites, Adam Doleac, who just so happens to be our first ever Swag Session Artist. He is the epitome of contemporary country music right now! With his charm, good looks, and killer vocals, it’s just a matter of time until he makes it big in the industry. We last caught up with the singer-songwriter at Taste of Country back in June, where we talked about his hit, “Famous” as well as, plans for new music. Check out the interview in the video below and give a listen to “Famous”, along with some of his other songs “SOLO” and “Wake Up Beautiful” that we are also loving. Keep up with Doleac on Instagram and Twitter.

2. Nick Wayne
LISTEN: “I Knew It Was You”

Next up, Nick Wayne is another artist that we’ve got on repeat. His unique sound blends effortlessly with his creative lyrics, making you want to sing along to each song right from the beginning. His newest song “I Knew It Was You”, off his soon to be completed Coffee Black is an infectious tune about knowing you found your soulmate, and we believe that Wayne has found his soul’s calling with music. He is a true storyteller. Make sure you keep Wayne on your radar. Give him a follow on Instagram and Twitter.

3. Baker Grissom
LISTEN: “Right Bar Wrong Stool”

One of our more unexpected picks is Baker Grissom. Virtually unknown until the release of his debut EP Saturdays & Sunday, Grissom is taking the country music world by storm in a big way. Both myself and our managing editor, Christina, fell in love with his sound and story-telling ability almost instantly, when we first listened to his record. He’s one of those artists that exists in his own lane, which is both refreshing and endearing. Check out his EP, especially “Do I Drink” and “You Are Who You Listen To”. Keep up with Grissom via his Instagram.

4. Levi Hummon
LISTEN: “Drop of Us”

Levi Hummon is another artist that we’re loving. He’s armed with clever lyrics, a charming smile, and a great voice. His newest song, “Drop of Us” is story-telling at its finest, and you’ll want to listen to it this summer! Arguably his most popular song, “I Still Do” is still one of our favorites, but it’s only the beginning of his talent. Hummon played “I Still Do” and the rest of the songs off his EP Patient back in October, when we caught the singer at his intimate release party in Nashville. To watch Hummon’s career take off, make sure to follow him on Instagram and Twitter.

5. Drew Baldridge
LISTEN: “Middle of Nowhere Kids”

Snagging our last spot is Drew Baldridge. We’ve been fans of the rising artist since back in 2016 when Baldridge released his single “Dance with Ya”. Fast forward to April 2018, when Baldridge joined us on Refinery Rooftop for a live Swag Session. Now, Baldridge is busy promoting his newest singles “Middle of Nowhere Kids” and “She’s Somebody’s Daughter” gearing up to play at the Boots and Hearts Music Festival in Canada later this week. We’re excited to see what the singer has in store for fans this year. Keep up with him via Instagram and Twitter.

Swag Spotlight: Drew Baldridge

Drew Baldridge

Next up for our weekly Swag Spotlight is: Drew Baldridge.  During CRS week in Nashville, Baldridge took time to chat with New York Country Swag about his new single, his forthcoming sophomore album and his latest initiative W.E.R.D.

The first single off his next project, “Guns & Roses”, was released in September of last year. The track is not about the famous rock band, but a song written about his girlfriend.  “I’m a boots-and-blue jeans kind of guy and she just like every girl, she likes to dress up and wear dresses and high heels and we just really go together just right,” he tells us. The single written with Grammy-winning songwriter and Songwriter Hall of Fame inductee, Tim Nichols (“Live Like You Were Dying” and “Heads Carolina, Tails California”) and Chris Stevens who is helping to produce the new project, will be on his sophomore LP that he hopes to release in late April or early May.  When talking about the vibes of the new project, Baldridge explains how he loves a good groove but also wants to remain consistent with his country lyrics.

Growing up, Baldridge was involved with a lot of missionary work as well as singing in his local church.  While chasing his dreams in the music industry, there is not a ton of time for much else.  “In the last couple of years I performed at 160 shows, so I can’t get out and do missionary work the way I want to. Now, I am combining both things I love,” he tells us.

W.E.R.D (Win Encourage Rejoice Daily) is a new merchandise line that will be sold at all of his shows this year with 100% of the proceeds going to charity.  Highlighting a new charity each month, the #WERDoftheMonth will allow foundations and missions that not only Baldridge is passionate about but also focusing on charities his fans are passionate about to benefit from the initiative.  “My goal is to reach out to my fans and if someone reaches out to me on Facebook and explains a tough situation they are going through, I want to be able to rally my fans together to help this family out we want to take donations as well and help however we can,” he says.

Baldridge will be opening for Scotty McCreery on a few of his shows as well as hitting the NY area on April 25th for MyCountry 96.1’s Country Night.  Keep up with everything W.E.R.D and all of his new music by following along on his social media channels including, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and on his website here.
