Devin Dawson’s ‘Stray Off Course Tour’ Hits NYC With Jillian Jacqueline

Last night, singer-songwriter Devin Dawson kicked off his 2019 leg of the ‘Stray Off Course Tour’ at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City with special guest, Jillian Jacqueline. Luckily for New Yorkers, we got to experience this tour after Dawson extended the run and even despite the freezing temperatures, fans showed up to pack the place for another sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom.

Stray Off Course tour

Kicking off the night, rising artist Jillian Jacqueline took the stage going straight into performing her songs, “Hate Me” and “Holier Than Thou,” off her EP Side A. Before going any further into the night she mentioned, “This feels good, it feels like the perfect way to kick off this year, thank you guys so much for being here!” Jacqueline performed most of her songs from both EPs, Side A and Side B, like “Somebody,” “Sad Girls,” “Tragic,” “Reasons,” “If I Were You (feat. Keith Urban),” and her current single “Priorities.” Jacqueline put her beautiful vocals on full display, showcasing her raw talent to the crowd.

Before ending the night with her last song, she took a moment to talk to the crowd saying, “This has been a lot of fun. New York City you are amazing. I always love coming back here, it is my hometown show…thank you guys so much for the warm welcome…I just gotta say this tour with Devin Dawson is really exciting and I couldn’t think of a better tour for me to be on…Thank you, Devin, for having me out!” Ending the night with a song that has always meant a lot to her and for those who may need some words of encouragement, singing “God Bless This Mess.”

Stray Off Course tour

Next up was the man of the hour, Devin Dawson. He ran out on stage kicking off his set performing his high-intensity song, “War Paint.” Right off the bat, he was full of energy, getting the crowd pumped for a great show ahead. With the night just getting started he yells into the microphone, “Hell yea! How we all feeling tonight? Somebody scream with me. My name is Devin Dawson and I am now a 30 year old. This is the first show of the ‘Stray Off Course Tour’ for 2019 baby!” Dawson who just celebrated his 30th birthday the day before was ready to jam out the entire night while performing every song off his debut album, Dark Horse.

Throughout the night, Dawson made sure to interact with the crowd by talking in between each song, connecting with the audience on a personal level while also making sure they were having a blast. Each song transitioned perfectly into one another as Dawson and his band jammed out, turning the show into a rock concert. When it came time for his upbeat song “Placebo” he had one rule for the crowd, to jump. The crowd did just that, jumping in unison getting everyone’s blood pumping and ready for the rest of the night ahead. Before continuing his set he mentioned to the crowd, “If you guys have been to one of my shows before if you know me at all, you know I’m influenced by a lot of different things. I grew up listening to a lot of rock…a lot of soul, a lot of R&B, a lot of pop, all of that but number one on my mom’s record player when I was a kid was always country music…The one thing I learned was how to write a song…and this next song I’m about to sing is just my example of just writing a very good country song.” Performing his vulnerable single “Asking For A Friend,” the entire crowd sang back the lyrics to Dawson, making it a moment to never forget.

Stray Off Course tour

As the night went on, those lucky enough to be in the crowd had the chance to hear not one but two new songs from the singer-songwriter. One of which Dawson had written after he had a conversation with someone we all know, Tim McGraw called “I Got A Truck.” This song told a story while his other new song, “Finishing Touches” was all about the lyrics, saying that it was a groovy love song. He gave everyone a taste of what was coming, making the crowd excited to hear what was next for the singer.

That wasn’t all for the night, Dawson brought Jacqueline out one last time to perform their duet “I Can’t Trust Myself.” Combining their talents, they sang their hearts out singing the emotional lyrics to one another while their voices intertwined perfectly. After Jacqueline had walked off stage, Dawson mentioned that he had been waiting a really long time to tour with Jillian so he can do that song.

With the night coming to an end, Dawson couldn’t leave without singing the song that started it all, his debut single “All Of Me.” He had the entire crowd with their hands up swaying back and forth while they sang back the lyrics to the singer. Before officially ending the night, Dawson came back on stage for the encore saying, “It’s so insane, we’ve been opening up for so many people for you know two or three years now and to finally get to come headline in New York City and you guys sold this show out. It means the world to me man, thank you guys so much for showing up. Everything I sang tonight is on my debut album…Every single one of those songs on that album is my way of just telling you guys my story, three minutes at a time but this last song as many of you guys know is my autobiography…It’s been really cool to see how it brought us all together and I’ve created this family over the last two years and you guys will really never know how much that means to me…Thank you guys so much for tonight!” Ending the night with his powerful song, “Dark Horse.”

New Yorkers, you can check out Jillian Jacqueline once again when she comes back to New York City playing at the Gramercy Theater on May 10th.

Devin Dawson Makes His Bluebird Cafe Debut with Surprise Guest

Bluebird

Photo via Warner Music Nashville Instagram

Bluebird Cafe is a magical place in Nashville, Tennessee, where fans get the true “in the round” experience, listening to artists take turns singing songs they’ve penned, songs they’ve loved, and of course telling stories. It is where many artists, such as Taylor Swift get ‘discovered,’ and home to a multitude of talented songwriters. Country newcomer, Devin Dawson made his Bluebird Cafe debut on Tuesday Night (10/9), accompanied by three of his favorite, talented songwriters, Jillian Jacqueline (one of our Swag Spotlight artists), Amy Wadge, and David Hodges.

The incredible team of musicians were sure to make the night unforgettable for the intimate crowd that gathered at the Bluebird; however, the night became even more special when superstar Ed Sheeran was noticed in the audience. Sheeran, who happened to co-write his hit “Thinking Out Loud” with Wadge, treated fans to a stripped-down version, during one of her turns.

Dawson was just as floored to have Sheeran present for his debut, and took to Twitter to express his gratitude and feelings about the epic night of music, “Unbelievable experience at @bluebirdcafetn last night. Honored to share it with some great friends & a special shout out to @edsheeran for the “Thinking Out Loud” cameo. Thanks to everyone who was a part of my first night at the sanctuary of songwriters. I’ll never forget it.”

If you find yourself in Nashville, make sure to check out the Bluebird Cafe for yourself and head over to devindawsonmusic.com to see if the artist is performing in a city near you. We caught him earlier this year on the will be  ‘The Long Way Tour’ with Brett Eldredge and Jillian Jacqueline, check out the full recap here.

Devin Dawson

[Watch] Devin Dawson Multiply Himself in “Asking For a Friend” Video

California native Devin Dawson released the video for his second single “Asking for a Friend” earlier this week.  The song is the follow up to “All On Me” which was gold-certified and the debut from his critically acclaimed album Dark Horse.

The concept of the single has had an ambiguous meaning since it’s debut. The lyrics tell a story of a man, who is asking for forgiveness, but it is unclear whether it is for himself or actually for a friend.  Set in Dawson’s signature black and white, the narrative visually showcases the angst the main character (played by Dawson) feels, as he longs for his broken relationship, but lacks the courage to apologize. In fact, Dawson multiples himself, playing each representation of a friend in the video. The stylistic and almost futuristic vibes of the video entices the viewer to continue to watch the story unfold.

When asked about his music video for “Asking for a Friend,” and his knack for storytelling, the singer-songwriter passionately shared in a recent press release, “I will always be a lyric guy at heart and nothing makes me happier than watching those words come to life.”

Dawson proved that he is a “lyric guy at heart,” as he has utilized his platform to create a YouTube series called “Asking for a Friend – Answered”, where he gives advice to fans on any issues and conflicts he or she or a “friend” might have. Find his newest installment below.

The singer does not currently have any future shows planned for New Yorkers just yet, gets back on the road with label mate, Brett Eldredge on the Long Way Tour; however, take a look back at our review of Dawson’s opening set from the first leg of the tour back in May.

Brett Eldredge’s ‘The Long Way Tour’ Hits NYC with Devin Dawson & Jillian Jacqueline…

“…I didn’t really care where else we went, all I knew is I wanted to end in New York City” Brett Eldredge tells his adoring fans who spent the entire concert on their feet at Hammerstein Ballroom.  The last stop on The Long Way Tour just happened to be right here in our favorite city in the world.  Prior to the evening show, Eldredge along with his supporting acts, Devin Dawson and Jillian Jacqueline stopped by Nash FM Hackensack Meridian Health Stage 17 to perform a few songs, which Nash FM 94.7 DJ Jesse Addy cleverly titled “The Short Way Tour”.

Jacqueline was up first, performing her single “Reasons” and “Hate Me” giving fans a sneak peek of what they would hear later on during her opening set. “Life is weird sometimes, you can’t always choose the timing of things,” she explained to the Nash DJs about getting engaged and having her song “Reasons” which is a breakup song about a previous relationship head to country radio. She ended with a brand new song that she wrote called “Tragic” about making it through tough times and not taking herself too seriously.

Devin Dawson was up next to preview his set for The Long Way Tour. Dawson sang “I Don’t Care Who Sees”, “Asking For a Friend” which just happens to be his next radio single and his breakout single, “All On Me”. “This is one of the funnest tours I’ve ever been on, I’m sad to say this is the last night of it, but we are going to leave it all out on the floor for you guys tonight,” he told the in-studio audience.

Brett Eldredge took the stage lastly, but not before running up and down the aisle high fiving all of the fans who spent their Saturday at Hackensack Meridian Health Stage 17.  He answered some questions from Facebook Live, including a shout-out to his mom who was watching live as well. He took a seat on a stool and grabbed his guitar to sing an intimate acoustic version of “Mean to Me” as well as “Wanna Be That Song” before handing out a pair of coveted tickets to that night’s show to a lucky audience member.

Check out the full live show from Hackensack Meridian Health Stage 17 below…

Fast forwarding a few hours, The Long Way Tour had its final run at The Hammerstein Ballroom in midtown Manhattan. Jillian Jacqueline and Devin Dawson once again acted as the supporting artists.   Jacqueline sang songs from her EP including “Bleachers”, “Hate Me” and “Reasons”.  Devin Dawson then took the stage to perform songs off his debut album Dark Horse including “War Paint”, “Symptoms”, “Prison” and of course his first single “All On Me”.  The audience was so loud singing back the words, Dawson was taken back and finally got emotional when the packed room of three floors was lit up with flashlights for his finale, “Dark Horse”.  After watching the swaying lights dance in the darkness, Dawson said: “New York City, I’ve never cried on stage before, this is a night I will never forget”.

Brett Eldredge's 'The Long Way Tour' Hits NYC with Devin Dawson and Jillian Jacqueline...

Eldredge who had saved most of his energy for this last night of the tour, took the sold-out room by storm, singing all of his hits, including “The Reason”, “Something I’m Good At”, “Lose My Mind” and “Don’t Ya”.  Pausing to slow things down a bit, the crew brought out a full-size bed, Eldredge put on a “Bed Head Jamz” zip-up sweatshirt and had his dog Edgar on stage with him to perform a live version of the Instagram famous “Bed Head Jamz”.  The audience sang along with him to “You Are My Sunshine” and then performed “Raymond” one of the first songs he had ever released which is about his grandma.

He invited back to the stage his opening acts to join him in singing Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” then ended the night of incredible music with “Cast Away” and “Drunk on Your Love”.  The Long Way Tour closed out its Spring run with a sold-out New York City show and the three levels of fans will agree it was a night to remember.

Devin Dawson Dark Horse

First Impression: Devin Dawson ‘Dark Horse’

Devin Dawson Dark Horse

Continuing the trend of great music being released in the new year, Devin Dawson‘s debut full-length album Dark Horse is finally here.  The soulful crooner grew up near the famed Folsom Prison in Calfornia, yes the same one that Johnny Cash performed at in the 1950’s.  Dawson is proud of his California roots, and the steps he took to get to where he is today in the music industry. Including spending time in a heavy metal band and growing up listening to R&B music as well as country music.

His highly anticipated album, Dark Horse is a culmination of years working towards releasing music to the world.  The lead single, “All On Me” has garnered over 43 million streams on Spotify, introducing his new blend of music to country music fans who are looking for something different.

Highlights on the LP include the title track, which unapologetically describes Dawson himself, his outlook on life and his career. (“Anyone who ain’t afraid to stray off course / My heart bleeds for country music, where the honest outlaw truth is / no I ain’t no white knight, I’m a little more dark horse.”)

Dawson spins lyrics into images with “War Paint” a tale of revenge on a cheating man. (“She ain’t crazy but she’s gonna make him pay / you can see it on her face, black mascara moulin rouge, blood red lipstick high heeled shoes / it’s her turn to do him wrong, that ain’t makeup that she got on, its war paint / go on girl  make that man feel your pain”) The record ends with “Prison” which a rocking mid-tempo closer, paralleling a love story to unavoidable confinement.

Late in 2017, Dawson performed in an intimate setting at New York City’s Rockwood Music Hall, introducing members of the music industry to these new songs.  Check out a full recap of the evening here.  Listen to the full album below.

Brothers Osborne Devin Dawson

New Year, New Music: Brothers Osborne & Devin Dawson, First Singles of 2018

New year, new music.

Brothers Osborne “Shoot Me Straight”

This month marks two years since Brothers Osborne released their debut LP, Pawn Shop.  After two Grammy nominations, the reigning CMA and ACM Vocal Duo of the Year are gearing up to release their sophomore project and fans were treated to the first single today.  Clocking in just under seven minutes long, “Shoot Me Straight” is everything the country genre needs to kick off the new year.  TJ’s husky baritone vocals singing about whiskey drinking and the subtle art of honesty along with John taking over with an electrifying guitar solo that takes you through until the end of the song, “Shoot Me Straight” will stimulate your senses and excite you for whats to come.  Check out our review from when the duo played The Paramount on Long Island just a few short months ago here.

Key Lyrics:

Make it burn the whole way down / Lay my six foot, four-inch ass out on the ground / Tomorrow I’ll have a hard hangover and one hell of a heartache / So pour it on like a shot of whiskey and shoot me straight / Don’t give me that salt shaker and lime / Don’t give me that comeback chaser this time / Don’t muddle it up, don’t water it down / Give me everything you got right here, right now,”

Devin Dawson “Symptoms”

Switching gears, Warner Music Nashville recording artist Devin Dawson released another track off of his forthcoming album Dark Horse, slated for release in two weeks (January 19th). “Symptoms” is a slow burn, just another example of how Dawson blends R&B and country to create his own personal brand. The groove runs off a list of evidence and warning signs of falling hard for someone. Dawson’s falsetto at the end of the track provides a whole new dynamic to the already sensual song. Check back for our First Impression of Dark Horse on January 19th and click here for our review from when Dawson played an intimate show at Rockwood Music Hall.

Key Lyrics:

“I’ve been craving more and more / Since I started losin’ sleep couldn’t catch a wink /  High fever in the sheets, knees getting weak / My heart was skipping beats, she was runnin’ deep / Like a toxin that’s all in my system / I’ve got symptoms”

Listen to these jams plus more new music on our New Country Music Playlist below.
Be sure to follow the playlist for new tunes every Friday.
