Craig Morgan: ‘Enlisted’ – EP Review

For U.S. Army Veteran, Craig Morgan, the word enlisted holds a lot of meanings. However, in the context of his new EP, out now, it has to do with the famous friends he enlisted to join him on his new project. On the six song project, simply titled Enlisted, Morgan has re-recorded four of his biggest hits and added two new songs along with famous friends like Trace Adkins, Luke Combs, Gary LeVox, Jelly Roll, Blake Shelton, and Lainey Wilson.

“Making this record has been so much fun because I got to get in the studio with some of my friends and also re-create some of my catalog in a way that feels like brand-new music,” shared the Broken Bow Records artist.

The new tracks on the EP include its anthemic opener, “Raise the Bar,” which pairs him with Combs and its closing song with Adkins, “This Ain’t Gonna Be Me.” On the single-ready “Raise the Bar,” the pair trade vocals about a stop at a local bar to raise a toast to the hard-working men and women of the country. Meanwhile, “This Ain’t Gonna Be Me” allows Morgan to proclaim his values and what’s important to him. “For me, it’s about God and family and country,” Morgan says. “I am so blessed, and I recognize the blessings of the freedoms we celebrate in this nation.”

The reimagined tracks are just as special, with an especially poignant moment taking place on the new version of “Almost Home,” which pairs Morgan with the golden-voiced Jelly Roll. For Jelly, the song provided a beacon of hope when he was incarcerated and inspired his artistry. “This song is full circle for me. It’s about situations you are sometimes in that you just mentally want to be somewhere else — ‘Almost Home’ — it’s something that I listened to in jail,” he shares. “Me and my cellmates could really relate to it. When I got out, I spent what little money I had and went to see Craig Morgan at the Grand Ole Opry and cried when he sang it.”

Morgan’s duet with LeVox is another standout moment, as the pair take the classic, “That’s What I Love About Sunday” to new heights. Together, Morgan’s powerful baritone perfectly compliments LeVox’s falsetto and they turn the well-known track into a stunning, Gospel-tinged track that’s sure to induce chills as it’s mixed with “Amazing Grace.”

Shelton joins his longtime friend on an almost tropical version of “Redneck Yacht Club,” for which he appeared in the original video back in 2005. “Craig and I have been friends for many years. I’m a fan of his music and admire him as a human,” shares Shelton. “After all of these years, I still don’t understand why he still feels the need to wear that toupee, but I’m thrilled he asked me to sing with him on ‘Redneck Yacht Club.’”

Lainey Wilson is the sole female duet partner on the album, adding her gorgeous vocals to “International Harvester,” a song she grew up on. “It’s an absolute honor to be a part of this record,” she admits. “I remember the first time I ever heard ‘International Harvester’ and the feeling I got knowing that there was music being written that felt like it was made just for me. I come from a family of farmers, so it’s really a full circle moment to be on this track alongside my good friend Craig.”

With a mix of old and new, Craig Morgan continues to shine on his new EP, and we’re so grateful.

In his brand new EP, Craig Morgan reimagines his hit songs enlisting the help of six incredible country artists. On the new record, perfectly-titled, Enlisted, Morgan collaborates with artists like Luke Combs, Blake Shelton, Jelly Roll, and Lainey Wilson, breathing new life into his songs.

“Making this record has been so much fun because I got to get in the studio with some of my friends and also re-create some of my catalog in a way that feels like brand-new music,” shared the singer. Morgan also shared, “There’s something to be said about singing a song that the majority of our populace wants to be able to relate to, or can relate to,” he says. “And that’s what great country does; I believe.”

Craig Morgan ‘God, Family, Country (Deluxe Edition)’ – Album Review

Throughout his impressive twenty plus year career, Craig Morgan has become known for releasing country music with heart. Now, over two years since the May 2020 release of his album, God, Family, Country, the Tennessee native is back with a deluxe edition, featuring four new songs, in addition to some of his biggest hits.

For the Army veteran, the Veteran’s Day release of the album has special meaning and comes in support of Morgan’s new memoir of the same name, as well as a concert at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium.

While the album features some of his biggest hits, including “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” “Almost Home,” “My Kind of Woman,” and “Lotta Man (In That Little Boy),” there’s just as much meaning on the newer offerings.

Of the four new songs on the project, it’s the current single “How to Make a Man” that’s an immediate standout. Here, Morgan grapples with the struggles of life that make a man who he is. The song is driving and introspective as the golden-voiced crooner deals with the bumps and bruises life has to offer.

“It’s the good days, bad days, goodbye heartbreaks // Tail lights fading ’cause you didn’t say enough // The loss and the tears and the laughs and the beers // The wars you fight, the ones you walk away from // You run, you crawl, you rise, you fall // You hit your knees ’til you learn to stand // Yeah, that’s how you make a man”

Additionally, Morgan is both introspective and celebratory on the other new tracks, including “Sounds Like Home,” which celebrates all the special sounds that make a home special and unique. From church bells ringing to porch swings creaking, the track features female powerful background vocals that add a special touch and push Morgan to stretch his own vocal chops.

Likewise, “Ask Him” is a touching tribute to asking an older person about their past, allowing him to impart his knowledge and speak of a special someone. “Ask him ‘bout the good book, and he’ll quote John 3:16,” He croons. “Ask him ‘bout a tractor, and he’ll preach some John Deere green, He’ll say, ‘If you drive a Ford, you can’t go wrong,’ But ask him about her, and he’ll go on, and on, and on.”

Lastly, there’s “I May Drink A Little,” a heartfelt ballad that finds Morgan embracing his imperfections in the eyes of God. “I may drink a little,” He muses, “But I still love Jesus.”

The other tracks on the album include his fervent faith in his family, his God, and his country. This weaves its way through the title track, “Sippin’ On the Simple Life,” and “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost,” the incredibly powerful dedication to his son Jerry, who passed tragically in a boating accident.

Meanwhile, “Soldier” finds him putting his own spin on a Gavin DeGraw track, while both “Going Out Like This” and “Whiskey” find him dealing with the end of a relationship. On the deluxe edition of God, Family, Country, Craig Morgan continues to show himself as an artist with heart, and a true dedication to his family, his faith, and his flag.

Craig Morgan has become synonymous with “heart” in the country music industry. He creates music that makes you feel. His voice is one of the most emotive in the genre. Morgan’s new song “How You Make A Man” continues to prove his staying power.

The new song is an honest tribute to all of the days of our existence. Morgan does not shy away from the hard times in life, as he sings about “rising” and “falling” throughout different times in life. The climax of the track is truly the title of the song. All these experiences are “how you make a man.” Throughout the song, Morgan acknowledges all the triumphs and tribulations. It is clear he knows a thing or two about rising from the ashes.

Craig Morgan Honors Frontline Workers In New Song “The Mask”

Despite producing the song long before the term “mask” had established itself into our everyday vocabulary, this new one from Craig Morgan could have easily been promoted as another brilliant coronavirus pandemic-inspired track. Still, “The Mask” finds sentimental value in its newfound depth as a dedication to frontline heroes.

Though, Morgan has not simply just played his cards right on this release. “The Father, My Son, And the Holy Ghost” singer continues to show his artistry through heartache melodies and lyrics. And, this new single does not venture off from that. Michael Rogers transcribed these lyrics along with Morgan which involves face-to-face interactions with God, a staple in a vast majority of his songs.

“Cause when I get home and it’s late at night / No one’s around and I turn off the light / I cry and scream and yell like a crazy man / I don’t have to pretend that I’m doing well, I can tell the world it can go to hell / It’s just me and God when I take off the mask”

On April 25, “The Mask” may have found its rightful place on the Grand Ole Opry stage where Morgan first introduced it as a Gratitune, which is a consumer-generated music platform that celebrates patients and healthcare workers of Vanderbilt University Medical Center during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the mid-tempo ballad is exactly the kind of track that would become a fan-favorite on an album and climb to the top of the country charts all on its own.

Craig Morgan Drops Powerful Song “The Father, My Son and The Holy Ghost”

It’s been just a little over three years since Craig Morgan and his family had to deal with the terrible reality of his son, Jerry, dying in a tubing accident on a lake close to their house. The nineteen-year-old was one of four children and in the wake of their loss, Morgan and his family have grieved, keeping their faith as a cornerstone in their lives.

Today (Aug 30th) he releases his first new music in three years, a song written solely by Morgan, that honors not only his son but the faith he has used to get him through this horrific time and the belief that he will see Jerry again one day. “The Father, My Son and the Holy Ghost” while a slow ballad, is inspirational, telling the story of what Morgan deals with and has overcome in the aftermath of losing Jerry. “But the pain of this was more than I’d ever felt before, yeah I was broke” he croons in the second verse, only to continue the process of crying and turning that emotion around to praying to God and finally little by little receiving hope.

“In the mornings I wake up give her a kiss, head to the kitchen / Pour a cup of wake me up and try to rouse up some ambition / Go outside sit by myself but I ain’t alone / I got The Father and my son and the Holy Ghost”

The listener is brought along on this ride with Morgan filled with anguish and sadness as he closes out the track with the lyrics, “One day I’ll wake up and I’ll be home, with The Father, my son, and The Holy Ghost.” In his delivery, you feel the agony as well as the confidence and conviction that he knows his son is no longer with him on Earth but that he is not gone.

Back in 2017 Morgan debuted The Gallery at Morgan Farms, a family-owned and operated a farm-to-home business in his hometown of Dickson, TN. The store features a variety of artisan items handmade by him and his family.
