NYCS First Impression: Thomas Finchum Self-Titled EP

Thomas Finchum

You may have heard the name Thomas Finchum before his debut in country music. As a singer + songwriter he employs a mix of influences and intonations, and his background also infuses a bit of everything.

Before signing with Concord Music in 2016, Finchum grew up divulging in his passion for diving exhausting his days and nights becoming the best. He earned fifth and twelfth place finishes in events at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, a gold medal at the ’07 Pan American Games, and bronze and silver at the ’07 and ’09 World Championships. “When I was on the diving platform there would be people watching and you don’t see any of them,” Finchum says in his bio, “With music, it’s the opposite. You want to connect with every single person. You want them to feel those emotions you’re feeling.”

October 18th, the Olympian alumni turned country mogul released his first self titled EP. It kicks off with “Red, Wild & Blue”. Written by Finchum, Michael Whitworth, and Andy Skib, the track highlights the beauty of America and that everybody is akin, and everybody is the same inside. He sings: “We’re all corner bars with neon signs / Oh, we’re all chasing dreams and getting by wishing on stars / Earning our stripes under the same sky / We’re all red, wild & blue.”

The following song is the singer-songwriter’s first released single “Past The Front Porch” and it’s a love song following a young couple in a relationship that are ready to take it to the next level. Other songs off the self-titled EP include fan favorite, buoyant “If You See Me Drinking,” and “These Hands” which Finchum wrote with Matthew West and AJ Prius back in 2016 upon signing his publishing deal. He states on Twitter, “I immediately knew this was the type of song I was chasing as an artist.”

A highlight on the EP is “Mothers” a song that our Managing Editor, Christina picked for her August Pick this past summer. Chronicling the importance that only a mother can give, Finchum along with his cowriters, Andy Skib,  and Catt Gravitt will touch your heart with their warm lyrics and make you want to pick up the phone and call your mama.
