Sam Hunt, Maren Morris & Chris Janson Sell Out Madison Square Garden

Sam Hunt I Madison Square Garden

One album, four years after his debut EP, only six songs sent to radio, Sam Hunt has reached extraordinary heights in a very small amount of time.  Thursday night was no different for the genre-bending superstar, completely selling out Madison Square Garden. As the “15 in a 30” Tour made its NYC stop, Hunt’s tour mates Ryan Follese, Chris Janson and Maren Morris took part in the epic evening, warming up the crowd.

Ryan Follese I Madison Square Garden

As fans were packing into The Garden, Ryan Follese took the stage to play a few songs including his latest single, “Put a Label On It”. “I know every artist probably says this but this is totally a bucket list item, playing this stage tonight,” he told the crowd.  The former frontman of the pop-punk band, Hot Chelle Rae, has recently released a few singles to country radio all on his own.  Mashing up the theme song to “Fresh Prince of Bel-air” and his former band’s biggest hit, “Tonight Tonight” had the audience jumping around and singing along.

A common theme throughout the night of incredible music was the fans packing out The Garden from beginning to end. It didn’t matter if a song was a radio single, a number one hit or a track buried on an album. Fans didn’t care if it was traditional country or had a twinge of R&B or pop, they cared that they loved the artists and the way the night made them feel.

Chris Janson I Madison Square Garden

Chris Janson was the perfect opening act for such a big show, providing the crowd with a high-energy set that left fans on their feet.  Singing all of his radio singles including “Buy Me a Boat”, “Fix a Drink” and even his unique version of “Truck Yeah” which he wrote and Tim McGraw cut.  “We are in the greatest city on God’s green earth tonight, I love America and I love New York City,” Janson said, which was met with an eruption of cheers.  Before singing his smash hit “Holdin’ Her,” (which he wrote for his wife, Kelly, and his children) he explained, “I believe if you speak simple acts of positivity to the world, positive acts rain down upon you”.  His inspirational words were the perfect lead-in for the love song. Before closing out his set, he let the fans in on a secret, that the very first instrument he ever learned to play was the drums for a punk rock heavy metal band. He took a seat behind the drumset showing off his skills.

Next to take the stage, Maren Morris, is the perfect counterpart for a Sam Hunt tour. Morris creates a unique version of country music, blending country with R&B. The power vocalist sang songs off her debut album Hero only stopping throughout her set to thank the audience for their enthusiasm and for singing along.  From her latest single “I Could Use a Love Song” to “Once” and “80’s Mercedes” every song had fans on their feet and swaying along.

Maren Morris I Madison Square Garden

“I never thought I would be doing this song at Madison Square Garden.  It’s such a special night and it’s been an amazing week and it all started with this song,” she explained. “I’m gonna take you to church on this one” Holding up her microphone to the sold-out crowd, she watched in amazement thousands of people singing her lyrics back to her.  The moment was a highlight of the evening, even bringing the songstress to tears.

Hunt’s headlining set featured songs that were exclusively on his first mixtape Between the Pines as well as covers of songs he has written for other artists and of course, his most recent absolute smash, “Body Like A Back Road”. The atmosphere was electric as Hunt’s amped up production featured huge screens and even smoke. It was the perfect mix of spectacle and slowed down moments that allowed the fans to feel like they were taking part in something really special.

Reminiscing to playing Irving Plaza for a small crowd three years ago, Hunt acknowledged how quickly his career has taken its turn and how he has had an incredible year. “This is amazing to be playing Madison Square Garden, I would say it is definitely a highlight of 2017 for me, it’s been a good year,” he tells the crowd in a moment between songs. Taking a moment to also thank Billy Currington for cutting “We Are Tonight” which was written before his career as an artist took off.

Sam Hunt I Madison Square Garden

This being his first headline tour, Hunt took a few minutes to slow things down, sit on a stool by himself on stage and talk to his adoring fans. Taking us through his musical journey growing up in Georgia, the acoustic set featured songs from all genres including traditional country, R&B, and pop music. He explained to the crowd filled with men and women of all ages, “This generation, y’all don’t pay attention to genres of music; you don’t pay attention to genres of people. You listen to what makes you feel good; you hang out with people you like, not people who look like you.”  The sentiment hit home, where fans of Hunt do not care which radio station is playing his songs, they only care that they love his songs.  Before ending his night on the main stage with “Break Up In A Small Town,” Hunt took to a smaller stage on the opposite end of the venue to perform “Make You Miss Me” on piano. Hunt showed versatility and the ability to entertain a sold-out crowd in New York City.

Overall, the epic night ended with confetti spraying down and fans leaving The World’s Most Famous Arena super impressed with the four-hour show. The 15 in a 30 Tour continues through the month.  For more information and tour dates check out SamHunt.com

Morgan Evans

5. Morgan Evans – Moving to the Nashville to pursue his music career further, a native of New Castle, Australia, Morgan Evans just released his first U.S single “Kiss Somebody”.  The track is light, the perfect combination of pop-country and Evans’ smooth voice serenades his listeners.  After seeing Keith Urban perform back in 2004, he knew that was the path he wanted to follow. Back in Australia, Evans’ band consisted of his brother and his best friend. When heading to the states, he found it was hard to find that chemistry, so he taught himself how to use a loop pedal and acquired the ability to tour alone. Along with his Australian accent, and his ability to create a backup band all on his own, he is a standout in the country genre.

For Fans Of: Keith Urban,  Brad Paisley

Our Favorite Songs: “Kiss Somebody”, “Everything Changes”

Lee Brice’s Next Single is Here!

Lee Brice Debuts "What Keeps You Up at Night"

Back in May, Lee Brice released “Boy” the first single off his forthcoming album and fans and critics alike were touched by the incredible ode to his sons.  If “Boy” was any indication of what is to come from the artist, his next single released Friday takes Brice to a whole new level.  “What Keeps You Up at Night” kicks off the 15-track record which is slated for release November 3rd. With a brand new baby daughter, Trulee Nanette, and two growing boys, Brice is obviously aware that the important things in life are his family. Not only does the mid tempo song showcase Brice’s amazing range but the lyrics encapsulate maintaining priorities in a crazy world. Brice co-wrote the song with Jessi Alexander and Ross Copperman.

What keeps you up at night? / What makes your heart beat wild? / what weighs on your mind, leaves you paralyzed what keeps you up at night? / what makes you take a stand, wanna get up and dance /  what makes you laugh til you cry, raise your hands to the sky, what keeps you up at night?”

“Lyrically, personally and musically it’s one of my favorite songs on this album — it was the beginning, the foundation and the bare soul of this album,” he tells People Country. “I didn’t want it to lull anyone to sleep — I wanted it to rock. Now, maybe, just maybe, it’ll cause someone out there to consider what keeps them up at night.”

The self-titled record promises to be some of Brice’s best work yet. Lee Brice is hitting the road with opening Morgan Evans, one of our 5 Rising Country Artists You Should Be Listening To.  The tour stops at Playstation Theatre in NYC on October 19th and Starland Ballroom in NJ on October 20th.  Grab your tickets here. Check out the track listing below.

Jennifer Nettles’ Poignant 9/11 Tribute “King of the City”

King of the City by Jennifer Nettles

Today, 16 years after the tragic events that took place on September 11th, 2001, Americans all over the nation reflect on where they were when they heard the news.  Grammy award winning country singer Jennifer Nettles is putting a fresh new narrative in place, releasing “King of the City”, inspired by an immigrant window washer who’s life was lost that day.

“That day in September / I’ll always remember / Started out just like the rest / I was floor 26 when the first plane hit / And I still feel that sound in my chest/ “It’s true I wasn’t born here / But my heart is sworn here / To hold up your dreams with my own / That day on my porch / I made it to church / And I prayed for each soul to fly home.”

The story unfolds as strings and Nettle’s voice crescendos, creating a beautiful testament to all of the fallen victims. Hear “King of the City” below and purchase the single on AmazonApple Music, and iTunes.

Scooter Brown Band Perform & Chat During Their NYCS Times Square Pop-Up…

Scooter Brown Band with NYCountry Swag

It’s not often that three men in cowboy hats with guitars can be found standing in the middle of the hustle and bustle of New York City’s infamous Times Square plaza but last Thursday that is exactly what you would have found.  New York Country Swag hosted a pop-up show with Scooter Brown Band and three members of the band took center stage to play songs off their brand new album, American Son.

Just like many New Yorkers passing by that day, you might be wondering, who is Scooter Brown Band?  Hailing from Texas, the band led by Scott “Scooter” Brown are a southern rock band with a twist of country. After two tours overseas with one tour of combat in Iraq, the lead singer decided to swap out guns for a guitar and pursue a music career.  Gathering a group of guys from Texas and Nashville, he formed his band which has now had the opportunity to open for Travis Tritt, the Marshall Tucker Band and one of their biggest influences, Charlies Daniels Band.

“Songwriting, that’s one of the things I love….I write a lot from experience, I write a lot from the heart.” Brown tells us during our chat with him last week.  The band co-wrote 12 of the 13 tracks on their latest album, American Son.  “The coolest thing about it is, getting something that is in your head, go from pencil and paper to guitar and into a studio and perform it live, it’s like watching a kid grow up,” he says of his favorite part of the songwriting process.

During his time in the marines, Brown became good friends with “American Sniper” Chris Kyle. Looking back on a conversation Brown had with Kyle about buying a bar together and what they could name it, the idea for a song became rather clear.  “He looked at me seriously and said we should call it “Valor” to pay homage to all of our brothers and sisters that fought in combat to fight for our country and he said no matter if you’ve got a medal for it or not, we all fought with valor,” he told us. Sparking an idea in his head, Brown threw some song ideas to Kyle and “Valor” was given life.  “That is the kind of guy that Chris Kyle was, any light that shined on him he kind of hoped that it would reflect off him and shine on everyone else,” he said of his friend. Unfortunately, the song was not complete before Kyle’s death but Brown finished the last verse and performed it at the funeral at Cowboys Stadium for all of those who loved and cherished the fallen hero.

Writing from a personal place is something the band does well.  Each song off their new album feels authentic and fans of the country music genre will appreciate the story each song tells. To learn more and purchase their latest album check out scooterbrownband.com and be sure to follow them on their social media accounts, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

NYCS First Impression: Thomas Rhett, Life Changes + Exclusive Set at NashFM 94.7’s Stage 17

Thomas Rhett - Life Changes

The highly anticipated third album from country star Thomas Rhett is finally here and it was worth the wait.  Thursday afternoon lucky winners got a chance to sit at Nash FM’s Stage 17, an intimate setting to hear songs off of Life Changes and were let in on insight about the new record before it hit shelves. The record showcases authentic, real-life stories that Rhett couldn’t make up if he tried. On first listen through, so many different sounds are recognized whether it’s his signature blend of smooth R&B with a country flair (“Kiss Me Like A Stranger”), fast-paced rap-like verses (“Life Changes”) or even an ode to doo-wop (“Sweetheart”)  the fourteen tracks on the record offer something for every fan.

“I write best about what I know about, I know how to write those things cause I’ve lived them,” Rhett explained yesterday at the exclusive Nash FM 94.7 Stage 17 performance.  Thanks to social media everyone seems to know every facet of Rhett’s life including his true love for his wife Lauren and their two baby girls, one which they adopted earlier this year from Uganda.  Nash FM’s Katie Neal asked what has been the best and worst advice you’ve gotten since becoming a dad.  “The days are short and the years are long but I know I’ll look back in 10 years and miss this time” Rhett explained. “And the worst advice is probably something Luke Bryan told me” he laughed.

Instead of shying away from personal stories, each song off the new album highlights them in a genuine way.  Fans can feel even more connected to one of their favorite artists by his honesty throughout his songwriting. “As long as I can be honest about the songs I put on the radio, that’s all I can do” Rhett explained to Nash FM’s Jesse Addy after discussing the pressure of continued success and number one hits.

“Craving You” featuring Maren Morris off the new record marks Rhett’s 8th number one single and in his short time in the spotlight of country music, his phenomenal growth as an artist is highlighted throughout Life Changes.  Nostalgia is a key feeling through out the record with “Sixteen” and the current single “Unforgettable” which transports listeners back to a different time and although they are specific to Rhett’s experiences, the songs remain relatable.

“I hated rules, even as a kid growing up… I don’t like staying in a box,” he says of creating the kind of music that doesn’t stay confined to barriers of genre.  His music is never boring and when the slow fade of one song ends you never know what to expect when the next song starts up.  In our opinion, being a great artist understands genre is fluid and making great music is more important than coloring within the lines.

For more exclusive content from Thomas Rhett’s Nash FM 94.7 appearance be sure to check out our Instagram and make sure you are listening to NashFM 94.7 to win tickets to private events and meet and greets with your favorite artists.

NYCS First Impression: Dustin Lynch, Current Mood

With his latest single “Small Town Boy” hitting the number one spot on the country charts this week and gearing up for the release of his new album, Dustin Lynch is riding high. Current Mood, available everywhere today, is a diverse look at Lynch’s versatility featuring songs that highlight his different influences. Having a hand in writing seven of the thirteen tracks on the project, it’s a personal testament to the artist he is becoming. The Tullahoma, Tennessee native writes about what he knows, and Current Mood showcases the different sides of the artist and his smooth vocals.

The production on some of the tracks may lean away from his country roots, combining R&B and pop to create a new lane in the country genre, that so many artists have experimented with recently. “Here We Come” and “Back On It” along with the seductive “Seein’ Red” and “Why We Call Eachother” are just a few examples of what his fans have to come expect, a sultry song with impeccable delivery.

For the songs that stray away from the twang of a country vibe, “Small Town Boy” Lynch’s current single brings him right back. This being his fifth single to reach the top of the charts, “I’m a dirt road in the headlights / I’m a mama’s boy, I’m a fist fight / Kinda county line, kinda cold beer / Little hat down, little John Deere” doesn’t get much more country than that.

A stand out on the record is “Love Me or Leave Me Alone”, written by Dustin Christensen and Chris Gelbuda.  Lynch is joined by Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild who lends her beautiful harmonies to the emotional song about the need to make a decision in a relationship and move on.

“If we’re just playin’ along, then we’re just playin’ ourselves / And I don’t want you to know where somebody is / Cause there’s magic between you and I / And I hate this impatience of mine / Love me or leave me alone / Hold me or just let me go / Cause I’ve felt this fire for so long / So baby love me, love me / Love me or leave me alone”

The album also has its quintessential party and drinking songs that will no doubt be crowd pleasers at Lynch’s headlining, Ride of Die Tour kicking off this fall. “Party Song” and “Wish You Were Beer” are some examples of what to expect during his live performance so get ready to hold your drinks high and sing along.

Grab Current Mood on iTunes here and check out our Instagram for stories from Lynch’s iHeart Radio Album Release Party.
