Pistol Annies Make Triumphant Return to Country Music

Pistol Annies - Interstate Gospel

Pistol Annies, Interstate Gospel

Country music’s all-girl supergroup, Pistol Annies, have announced the release of their third studio album, Interstate Gospel. Due out on November 2nd, the album will consist of fourteen brand new songs co-written by all three members. The trio released the title-track along with two of the fourteen songs, in honor of the album announcement and pre-order: “Interstate Gospel,” “Best Years of My Life” and “Got My Name Changed Back.”

The supergroup is composed of country superstar Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. The band made their debut performance in April of 2011, on the CBS special Academy of Country Music’s Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country.

The platinum-selling group began to tease their return to country music by mailing postcards directly to their fans, each with different song titles from Interstate Gospel. They also took to the band’s twitter, posting a photo of the postcards with the caption: “Thursday. We’ve got news. Stay tuned… PS: we just gotta say..y’all are smart. And if you haven’t taken a look back through the hashtag #PistolAnniesAreBack, you should.”

Last Wednesday night, Lambert reunited the trio as apart of her two-night artist-in-residence performance at the CMA Theater in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Rather than performing her solo work, she and the group only performed Pistol Annies songs, including the three new tracks as well as some old material from Hell On Heels and Annie Up.

Lambert was the Country Music Hall of Fame’s fifteenth artist-in-residence. The museum’s artist-in-residence program honors musical artists who can be credited with contributing a large and significant body of work to the canon of American popular music and is invited to use the museum’s performance venues to create unique musical experiences.

Pistol Annies had one more surprise in store for their dedicated fans this morning. Not one, but three intimate concert events. The group will play at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on October 25th then will follow with a show at Town Hall in New York City on November 2nd and conclude the round of shows at Novo in Los Angeles on November 7th.

Pre-sale tickets for these shows will go on sale Tuesday, October 2nd through the band’s fan club while general sale will begin on Friday, October 5th.

Interstate Gospel is available for pre-order now with the immediate download of three tracks. Visit pistolannies.com and follow Pistol Annies on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for updates.

Opry City Stage Closes It’s Doors…

It is with great sadness that we share the announcement that Opry City Stage, New York City’s first 4-level country music honky tonk, has shut it’s doors.

Opry City Stage, the first spin-off of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, opened a few short months ago in December 2017. Upon entering the magnificent venue, guests were immediately transported to a place that seemed far outside of the New York City norm. Greeted by cowboy hat wearing staff and immediately having the opportunity to shop the venue’s general store, guests could head upstairs to the full service 2-floor restaurant which featured live music, dining and a bar, or continue to the 4th floor, “The Studio” where private and intimate events were held.

Although New York is statistically one of the largest markets for country music and what we believe is very underserved, it seems that the Times Square venue was just not completely prepared for the fast paced reality of New York City.

It was announced today that the parent company, Ryman Hospitality Properties, is temporarily suspending operations at the New York City location as the company evaluates the venue’s market positioning, concept and operating strategy.

Colin Reed, chairman and chief executive officer of Ryman Hospitality Properties issued the following statement:

“As we have shared over the past several months, our Opry City Stage venue has taken longer to ramp up its operations than we initially anticipated and has unfortunately underperformed our revenue expectations this year. We have decided that suspending operations at Opry City Stage while we evaluate the venue’s ground floor experience and operations is the appropriate course of action.

I would like to thank both our New York City-based employees as well as the artists who have performed at Opry City Stage for bringing an authentic slice of Southern culture to life in Times Square. We look forward to sharing more details in the months ahead.”

The History – Back in October 2017, Stephanie & Christina of NYCountry Swag took a trip down to Nashville where the Opry team treated us to a special tour of the incredible venue and it’s rich history. Sharing the story of the Grand Ole Opry, exploring the memorabilia and catching the live show helped us to capture a better idea of what to expect in New York City. When it came time to check out the NYC location, we were amazed at how much thought and detail went into everything from the design of the space to the menu, truly bringing an authentic taste of Nashville to New York. Check out more from our Nashville trip here.

Tenille Townes Releases Emotional “Somebody’s Daughter” Music Video

Country music newcomer, Tenille Townes continues to shine a light on important societal issues through her music. We first introduced you to Townes back in April, when we reviewed her Living Room Worktapes EP, and again, in May, as a NYCS Swag Spotlight artist.

The Sony Music/Columbia Nashville recording artist hones her songwriting skills and expresses her vulnerability and honesty through each of the four songs. The newly released music video for her beautiful song, and one of NYCountry Swag’s August song picks, “Somebody’s Daughter,” continues to depict the powerful lyrics and the overall message of the track – recognizing homelessness  as an epidemic, but also empowering people to look at individuals, who are homeless as human beings.

The music video showcases the singer-songwriter playing guitar, as she belts the lyrics; however, the visuals focus on a little girl and her father, joyfully playing with one another, and the little girl all grown up, struggling with being homeless.

Townes captioned the video sharing, “This message is so important to me. My hope is for people to feel empowered to recognize those around us. We’ve all got a story and there’s a lot we can learn from a kid at a lemonade stand.”

One of the more powerful visuals comes at the end of the video, when the singer crosses paths with the homeless woman at a lemonade stand, run by a young male child. The visuals end with a commanding sentiment, “Everybody has a story.”

Check out the touching music video below.

Next up for the artist, who just wrapped up The Bandwagon Tour with Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town, is an overseas tour in October as part of the CMA Songwriters Series. Her full-length debut album is slated to be released in 2019.

To showcase how special the song is, the entertainer introduced his Instagram followers to a new and fun challenge, #90sCountryChallenge, with hopes to incite country music stars and fans alike to join in. NYCS Swag Spotlight Featuring Joe Lasher

Joe Lasher

Joe Lasher, born and raised in Weaverville, North Carolina, is the definition of a small town boy who grew up around music and decided early on that it would be his career choice. His grandfather was in a southern gospel quartet for 55 years and his dad was in a 90’s rock band that toured around the North and South Carolina area. In a recent chat with New York Country Swag, Lasher explains how his father’s music influenced his sound as well as grunge bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

Throughout high school, Lasher had wanted to make football a career, being that he is 6’3 and always very into sports but he tells us “I think God decided I was supposed to play music when I broke my leg the first play of the second game in high school, so I had to set aside everything I loved to do and I think that is when I realized I can’t do anything I love right now with a broken leg. That’s when I picked up my guitar.”

Playing open mic nights when he was 15-16 years old, he fell in love with being on stage, despite his nerves.  “People would put money in the tip jar, and what was really cool, I came back the next week and all of the same people that were there came again but this time they brought their friends so it was at that point that I realized I enjoyed being up on the stage and playing music and seeing the people in front of me enjoying what I was doing,” he explains. “I was very quick to get addicted to that feeling.”

Mixing his rock and roll background with his traditional country upbringing he started playing the rodeo circuits throughout the region and practicing the craft of live shows.  He became friends with songwriter and producer Jeremy Stover who has worked with a ton of country artists including Justin Moore.  Stover encouraged Lasher to make the move to Nashville right out of high school and they worked together on a 5 song EP to get his feet wet in the industry.

Now at twenty-one years old, Lasher has released a new single “Nothing Better To Do Friday Nights” which was written by Stover and rising country artist Michael Ray. Although he isn’t a co-writer on the song, Lasher tells us that the first time he heard it, he knew that it was the perfect way to introduce himself to a new fanbase in Nashville.  “From where I am from, we lived that life “Nothing Better to Do Friday Nights”  that was our way. We had nothing to do, so we gathered up, there was a parking lot, like a shopping complex, we used to gather around with our trucks on Friday nights, it was where all of the small-town gossip came together, and sometimes, some of us, we got in trouble,” he laughs.

“I want to play feel-good songs and I want people to relate to everything I am doing and I want them to know when they come to my show that I grew up doing the same things that they did so it will feel really homey and cozy,” Lasher explains of his live show.  He wants fans to know that although he is pursuing a country music career, he will never lose the rock and roll influence that his father instilled in him from an early age.

He looks forward to hitting the road to promote his new single, seeing new places and meeting new people. Be sure to follow Joe Lasher on social media, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Cole Swindell & Friends Entertain Long Islanders

It was a “Sunday Fun-day” on September 23rd at BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill on Long Island thanks to some awesome country music entertainers. New Yorkers were lucky enough to have Cole Swindell, Morgan Wallen, and Ryan Griffin perform for an event to honor the troops, hosted by My Country 96.1 radio station.

Ryan Griffin, Long Island, NY

Ryan Griffin, Long Island, NY

Country newcomer, Ryan Griffin started the night off entertaining the crowd with his songs “Good Company,” “Play It By Heart,” ”Best Cold Beer,” and covering Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” The singer was definitely feeling the energy of the night, sharing with fans “I’ll tell you what [New York] everybody that we encountered, since we’ve been here have been incredible. Ya’ll raised them right here.”

Some great moments of the night for the entertainer came at the end of his set, including playing his rendition of Kelsea Ballerini’s “Dibs,” a song Griffin co-penned.  He introduced the song as his first number one as a songwriter; however, the singer closed out his time on stage with his first own debut single as a recording artist, “Back Seats & Burnt CDs.”

Griffin showcased exactly why we named him a NYCountry Swag 2018 Artist to Watch, as he kept new and old fans alike pumped throughout his entire set, and just as excited for Morgan Wallen, who was up next.

Just after a short intermission, where sponsors awarded military contest winners and showed their support to veterans, Wallen took the stage with an indescribable energy and swagger that seemed to resonate with concertgoers. The Big Loud Records recording artist played songs off his debut album If I Know Me, including jams, “Whattcha Know About That,” “Happy Hour,” and the first song [he] ever put out, “The Way I Talk.”

Morgan Wallen, Long Island, NY

Morgan Wallen, Long Island, NY

The singer showed his softer side, singing his ballad “Chasing You,” and introducing his next single to country music radio, “Whiskey Glasses,” encouraging fans to let the radio stations know if they like it.

After thanking fans for letting him show his vulnerable side, Wallen got the party started sharing a sentiment with the audience, “I grew up on all kinds of music, but I always gravitate towards a little bit of Honky Tonk country music. Anyone like Honky Tonk country music? I’ll need you guys to sing this song with me, okay. We got any Brooks and Dunn fans in the house?!,” just before covering the classic song “Play Something Country.”

Wallen kept the party going with a mashup of more covers, including Linkin Parks’s “In The End,” Joe Walsh’s “Life In the Fast Lane,” and Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name,” as well as, Fallout Boy’s “Sugar We’re Going Down,” and Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” Fans passionately sang the lyrics back to the artist the entire time.

Keeping with his authentic nature and clear passion for all types of music, Wallen continued his set, introducing and performing his very first number one song as a songwriter,  Jason Aldean’s smash hit “You Make it Easy.” “A guy named Jason Aldean heard it and he liked it and he said he’s gonna make it his first single on his album” he added before playing the hit song.

The singer ended with a bang, performing his number one single, which features country duo Florida Georgia Line, “Up Down.” Check out our exclusive video interview with Wallen from back in November 2017, where we claimed “Up Down” would be his very first number one song, seven months before it went number one in June 2018.

Wallen closed his lively and energetic set reminding fans that Cole Swindell was up next, “Ya’ll in for one hell of a show. He’s one of the best dudes I know.”

Swindell lived up to the sentiment, beginning his set with hits “Let Me See You Girl,” “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” and new song, “Reason To Drink.” The entertainer’s set consisted of fan-favorites off his first two albums, “20 in a Chevy,” and “Chillin It”, as well as, his newly released third studio album, All Of It, including tracks “Dad’s Old Number,” “Both Sides of The Mississippi,” and “Break Up In The End.”

Cole Swindell, Long Island, NY

Cole Swindell, Long Island, NY

Just before playing the title track, the singer stopped to thank fans, “A couple of weeks ago I put out my third studio album. The response, the reaction has been everything I could have ever dreamed of. All I ever dreamed of was having one album, and the fact that you’ve given me a career, allowing me to make my third one, we’re in this one together. I will be playing a lot of the album tonight. Give me everything you got!”

Concertgoers did just that, belting out the lyrics to both fresh songs and classic favorites. About halfway through his set, Swindell stopped to recognize the fans yet again, “That’s why I love this area. Ya’ll are so damn passionate about music. Now this is what I call a Sunday fun-day!”

Some of the more poignant moments of the night came towards the end of his set and into his encore. Swindell sang his concert staple “Ain’t Worth The Whiskey,” sharing how the song started as a break up song, but has morphed into so much more, as fans raised their glasses to the honorees of the night, the veterans who were present.

Additionally, the singer-songwriter switched gears, acknowledging his roots in an epic mashup. Singing, “I Don’t Want This Night To End” (Luke Bryan), “She’s Country” (Jason Aldean), “How Forever Feels” (Kenny Chesney), “Get Your Shine On,” (Florida Georgia Line), and “Drunk On A Plane” (Dierks Bentley), Swindell acknowledged and paid tribute to his past tour-mates, showing how far he’s come from his merchandise days for Luke Bryan.

The recording artist ended the night with his hit “Flatliner,” leaving fans floored by the extraordinary night of music that they just witnessed. Next up, Swindell will head out for his ‘Reason to Drink… Another Tour’ with rising musicians Dustin Lynch and Lauren Alaina. Check out a full list of tour dates here, and keep checking our calendar for future New York Dates.

Dolly Parton and Sia Join Forces on “Here I Am”

Dolly Parton and pop superstar, Sia, have joined forces for a remake of Parton’s 1971 track, “Here I Am.” While the song originally appeared on Coat of Many Colors, it is now being re-released as a slower duet as part of the Dumplin’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Although Parton and Sia seem like an unlikely pairing, the duo absolutely soar on the soulful rendition of the song. Whether you’re familiar with the original or not, this new power ballad is the perfect pick me up.

Dumplin’ is a musical-comedy that will center around Parton and her music, with the country superstar listed as executive producer on the soundtrack. Parton recorded six new songs for the project and will also remake several older tracks as collaborations. In addition to Sia, other artists featured on the soundtrack include Miranda Lambert, Alison Krauss, Miley Cyrus, Rhonda Vincent, and Elle King. Additionally, Parton will trade vocals with the stars of the film, Danielle Macdonald and Jennifer Aniston.

Listen to “Here I Am” below…

Dumplin’ is an adaptation of a book by Julie Murphy, telling the story of a plus-sized teenager (Macdonald) and her former beauty queen mom (Aninston). When the teenager enters a pageant in protest, transformation overtakes the pageant and the town.

In addition to lending her music to Dumplin’, Parton will also pair with Netflix for an eight-part series centered around her songs. The anthology, due out in 2019, will have eight episodes, with each being based on one of Parton’s songs. “As a songwriter, I have always enjoyed telling stories through my music,” Parton said in a statement. “We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations.”
