“A Star is Born” has already broken box offices records since its release on Friday, October 5th. A memorable collaboration of a country-rock superstar Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) alongside an up and coming pop sensation Ally (Lady Gaga) have taken audience members from all over the country on an emotional, musical ride.

Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut included inspiration from Lukas Nelson, Willie Nelson’s son. Many would wonder, how did this come about? Well, Nelson caught Cooper’s eye back in 2016 playing with his band “Promise of the Real” at a classic rock festival alongside Neil Young. Nelson impressed Cooper so much so that he was asked to be the music producer for the film. Nelson’s country rock influence and years of band experience molded the Hollywood actor into his character, the infamous megastar, Jackson Maine.

It was not long before the working relationship of Lukas Nelson, Bradley Cooper, and Lady Gaga took off. Their chemistry while recording the album and movie was second to none. In an interview with Billboard, Nelson speaks to their dynamic relationship by saying “Its a great collaboration and a beautiful friendship that we have, it seems more like an extended family with those guys.”

Nelson worked with Cooper and co-wrote and produced many of the songs on the soundtrack of “A Star is Born.” One particular track that he takes pride in producing is “Shallow.”  Both the voices of Cooper and Gaga are glorified to create an incredible performance during the movie. It is no surprise that Cooper has already scored his first Billboard Hot 100 hit with this song, as it seems to be the unofficial theme song of the movie.  Other country music songwriters that have songwriting credits on the soundtrack include Hillary Lindsey (“Girl Crush”), Lori McKenna (“Humble and Kind”), and Natalie Hemby (“Automatic”).

“A Star is Born” is truly a blockbuster in the making, with rave reviews and a lot of award nominee buzz. From the studio album to the big screen, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga don’t miss a beat. The powerful lyrics perfectly depict a heartfelt story about addiction, love, and attaining success as a performer in the public eye. Nelson was quoted by Billboard explaining how it all came together, “The way that I approach my songwriting, I think there’s a lot of me in “A Star is Born.” These are songs that I’ve written about my own life, and in a way, they can be applied to any situation.” Be on the lookout for Lukas Nelson and The Promise of Real playing throughout the movie in theatres now!

New York Country Swag 2018 Artist to Watch, Cale Dodds is back with a brand new single, “What We Gonna Do About It”, and a hilarious music video to go along with it. The Warner Bros. / Warner Music Nashville recording artist teased fans all week long via his Twitter and Instagram with stills from the new music video for the track, which was also released Friday (Oct 5.). “What We Gonna Do About It” follows the singer-songwriter’s debut single “Take You Back”.

Penned by Dodds with Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and producer Corey Crowder, the gifted songwriter delivers another jam. The dynamic track is upbeat, fun, and cheeky, fitting the entertainer’s personality to a tee. It’s infectious beat and catchy lyrics will have fans blasting it through their speakers and singing along in no time.

“We’ve been waiting on a night like this / on a night like this / to be right like this / We’ve been looking for a good excuse / yeah a good excuse / to get a little loose / You know we got the whole night / We’ve got the moonlight / Ain’t no better time then now / We’ve been waiting on a night like this / on a night like this / So what we gonna do about it”

The music video, starring the singer and his band, matches the vibes of the track perfectly. Directed by Dustin Haney, the video was created to show fans the level of energy and performance they could expect from one of the singer’s shows. The video showcases Dodds working as a janitor at a nursing home. When he sees a flyer for an open mic night, he runs around the place eagerly convincing his co-workers and real life bandmates to perform with him. The crew ends the video playing for the seniors, which adds great comedic value to the visuals.

“What We Gonna Do About It” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Featuring Valerie Ponzio

Valerie Ponzio

Photo via www.valerieponzio.com

Recently, the country music umbrella has expanded thanks to artists like Maren Morris and Florida Georgia Line bringing pop influences, The Cadillac Three bringing a southern rock vibe and even Lady Antebellum adding a horn section into their latest album.  This week’s Swag Spotlight focuses on Valerie Ponzio, a singer-songwriter who grew up in a West Texas town, El Paso which borders Mexico and New Mexico, she hopes to bring her own blend of country music and Latin music to a new fanbase.  “I like to play different places and shed light on the region that I am from and the interesting Latin/country mix that they are known for,”  Ponzio tells us.

Her influences growing up and currently, range from strong female vocalists such as Sheryl Crow and Mariah Carey to Sting, Johnny Cash, and Luke Bryan as well as Shakira and the mariachi bands that she grew up listening to in Texas. Those sounds all come together to create Valerie’s undeniable signature sound, something that she prides her self on. “In the writing room, I try to bring Latin artists, as well as country artists as my influences and as far as where I want my songs to go,” she tells us, “It’s a funny mix between country and Latin, where I am at, it is where I steer all of my music and my live performance too.”

Most recently, Ponzio was a four-chair turn on season 12 of the popular singing competition, The Voice, ultimately choosing Blake Shelton as her mentor.  She chose to sing the Johnny Cash classic “Ring Of Fire” which although is traditionally a country song, sonically has a Latin energy, with mariachi horns in the chorus. “People are very passionate about Johnny Cash, you want to make it your own but do it as much as you can to pay your tribute and the style of the song,” she explains of her audition. Her sultry and slowed down version caught the attention of all four of the judges, Adam Levine exclaiming, “You are the most well-rounded singer, I think, for this particular panel of judges that I really kind of ever heard.”

She explains that the opportunity to be showcased on one of the most popular singing competitions is a crazy rollercoaster ride. “It was such a high moment in my life that I got to share with the people I love,” Ponzio tells us of her entire family being present for her blind audition. “It helped me grow as a singer and a performer.”  After the show, she moved to Nashville and is grateful for all of the connections and opportunities that have come her way.  She is writing as much as she can and taking every chance to spread her unique blend of music to new fans.

Her debut EP, Timeless, was released in July and features four original songs and the title track in English and Spanish.  Three of the four songs were written by Ponzio herself, as she represents her journey of moving to Nashville to further pursue her dreams and falling in love.  She explains that moving to Nashville has taught her so much about music and writing and even learning to let go and let the best song win.  When she heard “Morning” which was written by fellow Latin/country artists Sammy Arriaga she knew she had to record it for her own project although she didn’t write it herself. “The song is king here, you learn to respect that, even if I didn’t write it, there is something so amazing and putting that first and then seeing people react to it,” she says.

She is currently playing shows in Nashville, promoting the new music and looking forward to bringing her sound to other places around the country including places that primarily Latin markets that may not specifically listen to country music.  She hopes to put a tour together for early 2019.  Be sure to follow Valerie Ponzio on social media including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Emerging Star Teddy Robb Hosts Impressive Nashville Writers Round

Blake Chaffin, Teddy Robb and JT Harding, Nashville Writers Round at Douglas Corner Cafe

Wednesday evening (Oct 3.), rising artist Teddy Robb hosted a writers round at Douglas Corner Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee. Joined on stage by his buddies Blake Chaffin and legendary songwriter JT Harding, the three took turns playing songs and telling stories of their music in true ‘writers round’ fashion.

NYCountry Swag Instagram followers had a front row seat to the show through our Instagram Stories which gave sneak peeks to some of the most special moments of the night. Judging by the number of messages and clicks we received, we can safely say that Robb has definitely earned himself some new fans.

During the show, Robb explained his journey to Nashville, claiming a little inspiration and curiosity was just the right amount of spark that encouraged him to make the career move, leaving his Ohio home. Kicking things off on a rough course, Robb went through many ups and downs as a songwriter and performer. Through heartbreak, rejection, and dealing with the idea that he might have to settle on music being just a hobby instead of living out this dream, Robb continued to push forward, never giving up, and fans should be so glad he did.

Robb’s debut single “Lead Me On”, written by Robb, Ryan Beaver, Aaron Eshuis, and Matt McGinn was released just a few short weeks ago on August 24th. Not only does the track have some remarkable songwriters, but it’s got some top-notch producers to add to the list as well including McAnally and McGinn, along with Ben Fowler. The song is currently being featured on Apple’s ‘Breaking Country’ playlist and  listed on Spotify’s ‘New Boots’ playlist.

Robb treated the intimate audience to several unreleased songs including “Make Me Fall In Love With You” and “Watered Down”. Although Robb’s vocals were on point throughout the night, effortlessly flowing in tune with his band that joined the stage behind him, Robb broke things down in the middle of a song called “Lonely Girl”. As the band silenced, just Robb & his guitar stole the spotlight, a mesmerizing experience and standout moment of the night. Teddy Robb is a name not to forget.

Alongside Robb, hit songwriter JT Harding sang some of his most notable tracks to get the crowd going. Crowd favorites included “Sangria”, the song he co-penned for Blake Shelton, and Uncle Kracker’s smash “Smile”. Chaffin played one of his songs on Logan Mize’s album Nobody In Nashville called “Good Life” and a standout new song titled “Try Cheating On A Girl”.

The artist’s chemistry bringing them together to play a writers-round in Nashville proved to be a prime example of what country music is all about. Keep up with the songwriters on Instagram – @teddyrobb, @blakechaffin and @jtxrockstar to follow their individual journeys in the music industry.

Teddy Robb’s “Lead Me On” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

Listen to it on our new music playlist below and check back soon for more new music from the rising star from his forthcoming EP. Be sure to give the playlist below a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS First Impression: Heather Morgan Releases Debut Album “Borrowed Heart”

Heather Morgan, "Borrowed Heart"

Heather Morgan, “Borrowed Heart”

Singer-songwriter Heather Morgan has released her highly anticipated debut album, Borrowed Heart.

The Texas native has had major success as a songwriter, penning numerous hits for artists like Brett Eldredge, Maren Morris, Kenny Chesney, Danielle Bradbery, and many more. Now, it’s time for Morgan to let her voice shine and create a name for herself as a performing artist.

While searching for her own sound, Morgan spent many long days and late nights in the writing room, but it wasn’t until a spontaneous soul-searching trip to Joshua Tree, that Morgan found her unique voice.

From a small AirBNB tucked away in the Joshua Tree area, Morgan created the beautifully composed song “Your Hurricane”, which stands out clearly through the album, feeling the helplessness of love and how it overcomes us. Followed by her edgy, almost heavy metal track “Morning Light” which captures her feisty side.

Morgan’s personality beams through with every track on the album. It’s soulful, truthful, and without a doubt, relatable in every single lyric she’s singing. From beginning to end, the entire record is a masterpiece of storytelling. It’s clear and strong writing that doesn’t miss any important details.

In a recent press release, Morgan explains the idea behind the title track “Borrowed Heart”, which she co-wrote with Lori McKenna, “There is so much meaning to the words ‘Borrowed Heart’, together for me that goes beyond the song.” she says. “I have been writing with other artists for a while and it’s such a gift to create with them. You literally pass on parts of your story and your soul in the writer room to other people and they do the same. This title just seemed to fit the moment and summarize everything I put into it.”

Most of the songs on the album are composed by Morgan, along with some help from fellow Nashville songwriters and friends including Ross Copperman, Paul Moak, and Lori McKenna.

It’s clear that Morgan’s unique sound and previous experience in the songwriting scene was just the right step for her in creating this project.

Borrowed Heart is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Lauren Alaina Takes Us Back to The ’90s in New Single

Lauren Alaina, "Ladies In The '90s"

Lauren Alaina, “Ladies In The ’90s”

ACM New Female Vocalist of the Year, Lauren Alaina released her latest single, “Ladies in the ‘90s” to country radio today (Oct 5). The song is said to be the first single off her next studio album. It follows the songstress’ first number one song, “Road Less Traveled” and its successor “Doin Fine,” both off her sophomore album Road Less Traveled.

Co-written by Alaina, the nostalgic track celebrates female artists of the 90s across all genres of music, and the time where women artists ruled the country genre. The lyrics remind fans that the 90s were a decade where talented female musicians, like Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks, did not have to struggle to be prominent on the radio and at award shows. Pop icon Britney Spears, girl group Destiny’s Child, and the iconic Spice Girls are also referenced on the track.

“I was raised on radio waves / where the ladies dominated / Sometimes I close my eyes and just replay it / I just want to feel like ladies in the 90’s / Turn the dial and find me some ‘Strawberry Wine’ / So I can sing all night long / Acting like I’m Britney”

The single seems to follow the name-dropping trend we’ve seen in country music, mentioning singers’ name and song titles, such as “Strawberry Wine” and “(Baby) One More Time.” Alaina delivers a girl power anthem with the same excitement as former tour-mate Walker Hayes’ “90s Country.”

Showing her enthusiasm for the new record just before its release, the singer-songwriter took to Twitter, “Tomorrow. Ladies in the ‘90s. This is my favorite single I’ve ever released. I hope you love it too. This is me “Feeling like I’m Britney” at @BrdgstoneArena.”

As Alaina’s opening role on Jason Aldean’s “High Noon Neon Tour” comes to a close, which included playing for a sold out crowd in New York City at Madison Square Garden back in August, Alaina gets ready to embark on another tour. The singer was recently announced as a supporting act on Cole Swindell’s “Ready to Drink… Another Tour”. The tour has not announced a NYC Area stop… yet.

“Ladies In The ’90s” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

Tim McGraw Takes Us To Church With Brand New Single

Tim McGraw, Neon Church

Tim McGraw, Neon Church

A typical church is not what’s depicted in Tim McGraw’s new single “Neon Church”. With a jukebox choir vibe, McGraw released his first single since 2015 early Thursday evening (Oct 4.) after a week of hints and build up over his social media platforms. First releasing a blurry photo of the album cover, then proceeding to wipe all media clean, leaking a line from the song and a new alert system, McGrawOne, fans have been anticipating this moment all week long.

The song takes you on a journey of McGraw easing his troubles. From moving to a smoky room and a party crowd, to combining a variety of religious imagery, McGraw paints a perfect picture in your mind with thoughtful lyrics.

With the surprise release, fans were also treated to a second song “Thought About You”, another ballad about what love is and what it’s not. While McGraw has put out his fair share of ballads, these two are a complete 180 from the past. In an email sent to fans, McGraw said “I really felt that both these songs were ready to be heard and will absolutely give a sense of where I’m going with my next project. They’re meaningful to me and show the diversity of what I’ve been working on musically..”

This new music is a first look into McGraw’s first solo release since his 2015 album, Damn Country Music, which included hits like “Humble And Kind” and “How I’ll Always Be”. While there is no indication on when McGraw is going to put out a full album, we can only expect more great releases from here.

“Neon Church” and “Thought About You” are now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

NYCS First Impression: Eric Church Releases ‘Desperate Man’

Eric Church Desperate Man

Eric Church, Desperate Man

The term outlaw generally defines one who has broken the law.  Eric Church who released his sixth studio album, Desperate Man, available everywhere today, breaks the laws of the current country music trends by following his gut and releasing music that his fans will love, paying no mind to radio programmers or Billboard charts.

The character that Church plays in his latest video for the title track and debut single from the album showcases a fugitive on the run,  mainly from his record label and industry bigwigs alike as he tries to simply get his music to his fans.  The members of the Church Choir are rewarded each time he releases an album, the vinyl record shows up on their doorstep, sometimes before it is available anywhere else, a precedent he started with his 2015 album Mr. Misunderstood and will continue with this album.

Church doesn’t shy away from his political views on Desperate Man, rather chooses to confront what middle-class Americans are facing in the opening track “The Snake” as well as the album closer, “Drowning Man”.  The former grittily accentuates the greed our government is so often capable of while the latter focuses on the underdog, the struggles blue-collar workers are facing.

“Monsters” highlights several downfalls that the human race encounters including, pride, sickness, and darkness, which all take their lessons from the devil.  Church combats these monsters by facing them head-on with his faith.  (“I keep my faith intact/ make sure my prayers are said / cause I’ve learned that the monsters ain’t the ones beneath the bed”)

Interestingly enough, Desperate Man is released exactly one year after the mass shooting at Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, where Church was a performer the night before the tragedy.  Although each member of our country community was hit hard by this senseless act of violence, he publicly showed his emotion during a performance at The Grand Ole Opry the following week and discussed the event during his in-depth interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, telling them it was the last time he cried.

Desperate Man has it’s heavy, poignant songs but two of our favorites are “Hippie Radio”, a nostalgic look back at a life filled with music from the past and “Heart Like A Wheel” a sensual, sultry track which seems like the perfect sequel to “Like A Wrecking Ball” from his 2014 album The Outsiders. Sonically as a whole, the project explores new dimensions vocally all the while reinventing Church’s signature sound.

Announced last month, Church will begin his Double Down Tour in 2019 bringing his new music on the road. The tour stops in 18 cities, each city he will play two completely different shows, plus one show in Nashville. For the full list of tour dates, head to www.ericchurch.com.  Click here to take a look back at our all-time favorite Eric Church songs so far and take a listen to Desperate Man below.

Top 10 Eric Church Songs… So Far

Eric Church Top 10 Songs

As we anticipate the release of Eric Church’s sixth studio album, Desperate Man, this Friday (Oct. 5), we took a walk down memory lane, chronicling some of the entertainer’s best hits.

Church’s incredible catalog of songs span over a decade, giving fans an inside look into his thoughts and feelings as an artist through his diverse song-writing. Although difficult, we narrowed down the platinum-selling singer’s tracks to ten of his best songs, so far.

10. “Desperate Man”

As the title track on the soon to be released album, “Desperate Man” makes the list for its contemporary country sound. The track co-written by Church with Ray Wylie Hubbard, leaves loyal fans even more excited for the new songs to come.

9. “Creepin”

Every Church fans knows this one! “Creepin” was the fourth single off of Church’s 2011 album, Chief, The track garnered Church a top 10 hit and still remains a crowd favorite during live shows today.

8. “Guys Like Me”

Co-written by Church with Deric Ruttan, one of the first singles, “Guys Like Me,” off his debut album Sinners Like Me, was our introduction to the singer’s vibe and “outlaw” mentality.

7. “The Outsiders”

The title song and first single off Church’s fourth studio album grabbed our number seven spot with its unlikely reception from country fans and country radio. It is an anthem for the outsiders, the “weirdos,” and the underdogs. The single captivated fans, and even found its way to Number 6 on the Billboard Hot Country chart.

6. “Give Me Back My Hometown”

Platinum-certified “Give Me Back My Hometown” is an important song in Church’s career, due to its success on the country charts. Its poignant and nostalgic lyrics, cowritten by the singer, earn it a spot on our list.

5. “Drink In My Hand”

One can not simply compile a list of Eric Church hits without including this breakout song, “Drink In My Hand,” off Chief. The track is the country megastar’s first number one song of his career, a platinum-certified track, and his first Top 40 single on the Billboard Hot 100 list.

4. “Talladega”

This slow-burn ballad found its way to our number 4 spot for its lyrical message. Although Church’s inspiration came from racing, the song reminds fans to live for the moment, as time passes us by quicker than we think.

3. “Love Your Love The Most”

The first single off the sophomore album, Carolina, is the singer-songwriter’s first top 10 hit. The heartfelt love song showcases Church’s vulnerable and romantic side, which music lovers appreciate.

2. “Record Year”

This 2015 track off Church’s surprise album, Mr. Misunderstood, scores the number 2 spot, due to its ingenious lyrics and play on words, as well as, its true-blue Church sound that fans enjoy.

1. “Springsteen”

Our number one spot goes to Church’s iconic and chart-topping, “Springsteen.” Written by Church with Jeff Hyde and Ryan Tyndell, the track transcends generations with its musical references and story romance. More importantly, the number one single was certified double platinum, and earned Church two Grammy Award nominations, in addition to an ACM Award for Song of the Year in 2012.

Top Eric Church Songs honorable mentions go to “Round Here Buzz, “What I Almost Was,” and “Smoke a Little Smoke.” How does our list of our Top Eric Church Songs match up to yours?  Listen to the tracks on the playlist below and check back here on Friday for our ‘First Impression’ review of the superstar’s highly anticipated album, Desperate Man.
