New Opry Video Series “The Write Stuff” Dives Into Songwriting Stories

The Write Stuff

We’ve all heard and probably have been caught belting out the Grammy-nominated song Girl Crush” by Little Big Town but now Opry Entertainment is focusing on the writing of the song in its latest video series “The Write Stuff”. The first episode features songwriters Lori McKenna, Liz Rose, and Hillary Lindsey.

It all started when co-writer Mckenna was going through her list of titles when she came across “Girl Crush.” She mentioned the title to Rose and when she asked what the song was about, McKenna wasn’t entirely sure. When they mentioned the title to Lindsey, she sat on the couch with her old Gibson guitar started playing the tune and sang the first four lines, just like that.  And the rest is history.

The trio, known as “The Love Junkies,” didn’t have a lot of time that day, so they didn’t look back once the lyrics were finished. However, they say if they did have time to go back and make edits, they probably would have changed the lyric “I want to taste her lips,”. That specific line was the main reason why fans had initially misinterpreted the real meaning behind the song, not realizing the story was about a woman who was jealous of her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend.

The first episode of “The Write Stuff” (below) starts out with a clip from Little Big Town performing the song in the famed circle of the Grand Ole Opry and flawlessly goes back and forth from the songwriters sitting talking about the song and singing it, to the performance and back again.

McKenna admitted during the interview that they weren’t that confident that someone would want to cut the song, “We didn’t even know if it made sense. It made sense to us because we were all there when it happened, but we didn’t know if someone else coming in for the first time would get it right away.” Little Big Town did and released the song on December 14, 2014. The song debuted at #48 on Billboard’s Hot Country and would reach #1, where it stayed for 13 consecutive weeks.

Be sure to check out the episode of “The Write Stuff” and be on the lookout for future episodes which will include songs from Lee Brice, Hunter Hayes, and RaeLynn.

[Watch] Chase Rice’s Cover of the Chris LeDoux Classic “This Cowboy’s Hat”

Tar Heel native and decorated country singer, Chase Rice continues to surprise fans after the recent release of Lambs & Lions (Worldwide Deluxe). The album featured reimagined fan favorites as well as two brand-new songs, including his newest release “This Cowboy’s Hat.” Rice had been teasing little clips on social media stories in the week leading up to the release of the Chris LeDoux classic with the rodeo champion’s son Ned.

In a recent interview with Cowboys & Indians, Rice shared, “That was my childhood… Garth Brooks and Chris LeDoux. And for me to be able to record that song with his son and with one of the guys from Western Underground playing on the song… that’s insane. If I was going to do it, I wasn’t going to screw it up. We had to do it right and I think we nailed it.” Not only did they nail the vocals, but the video as well.

The music video hits close to home as it highlights rodeo grounds and old video footage, something the LeDoux family is very familiar with. Directed by Cody Cannon, the video includes clips of Rice and Ned LeDoux in the recording studio singing their version of the song as well as scenes from Colorado’s Greeley Stampede where they performed it live. Rice explained, “We kind of wanted to give a little tip of the hat to his dad and how he did it originally, with a live music video… We actually added in some of the original video as well.” The video closes with footage of Chris LeDoux, as well as a tribute to Rice‘s father who cultivated his love for both rodeo and country music.

While continuing to amaze fans, Rice is also in the midst of a huge career moment. “Eyes On You” has become the most-streamed song of Rice‘s career with more than 120 million streams and is now Top 10-and-climbing at country radio.

To keep up with Chase Rice follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“This Cowboy’s Hat” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

A Country Song For Every Phase Of Your Life

Country Song Phase in Your Life

Some of the best songs out there are the songs that make you feel something. Those songs that make you feel nostalgic, feel excited about the future or tell us what we need to hear. There truly is a country song for every phase of our lives. Country superstar Maren Morris embodied those notions in one of the deep cuts off her sophomore record, GIRL, entitled “A Song For Everything.” Inspired by Morris’ powerful track, we decided to compile a list of a country music song that can be the soundtrack for every phase of your life because “there’s a [country] song for everything.”

Graduating High School: “My Wish”- Rascal Flatts

High school is one of the times in our lives, where we face all sorts of challenges, as we make strides to figuring out who we really are and who we want to become. Graduation is often a bittersweet moment. This song gives us the words that we want to say to ourselves as a pep talk, to our friends, and that others hope for us.

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to / Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small / You never need to carry more than you can hold / And while you’re out there getting where you’re getting to / I Hope you know somebody loves you and wants the same things too / Yeah, this, is my wish.”

Moving Out & Leaving Home: “Wide Open Spaces”- Dixie Chicks

At some point in our lives, often after graduation, we tend to leave our childhood homes behind and step out of our comfort zones towards independence. The Dixie Chicks gives us the perfect uplifting song to listen to as we grow into the person we’ve always wanted to become.

“She needs wide open spaces / Room to make her big mistakes / She needs new faces / She knows the high stakes.”

Falling In Love For The First Time: “Yours”- Russell Dickerson

Of course there are tons of country songs to choose from that embody how we feel when we fall in love for the first time; however, Russell Dickerson wrote and recorded one of the most heartfelt love songs released in the last few years. It is the perfect backdrop to feeling like you are on cloud 9 with your significant other.

I came to life when I first kissed you / The best me has his arms around you / You make me better than I was before / Thank God I’m Yours.”

Going Through A Breakup: “You Get Used to Somebody”- Tim McGraw

Regardless of the circumstances, going through a break-up is difficult. Tim McGraw puts words to all the mixed feelings. Even if we are relieved the relationship is over, it’s still weird, and it takes time and a lot of getting used to. For more break-up songs that help us navigate our feelings, check out The Break-up Playlist you Didn’t Know You Needed.”

“I guess you get used to somebody / Kind of like havin’ them around / I guess you get used to the way they make you happy / Bring you up when you’re feeling down / I never dreamed when I was letting you go / That I would wake up and miss you this much / I guess you get used to somebody / I guess you get used to bein’ loved.”

Getting Married: “She’s Everything”- Brad Paisley

On the contrary, getting married and meeting our forever soul-mate is a happy time in our lives. Many country artists have given us the perfect song to commemorate the special day; however Brad Paisley gives us a song that reminds us of the reason we’ve chosen who we’ve chosen because ultimately our spouse is the person we never knew we always wanted and needed.

“She’s a fighter when she’s mad / And she’s a lover when she’s loving / And she’s everything I ever wanted / And everything I need / I talk about her / I go on and on, an on / ‘Cause she’s everything to me.”

Becoming A Parent:The Best Part of Me”- Lee Brice

Although this song is intended to be a love song, it’s the perfect love letter to your children, when you become a mom or a dad. Lee Brice sings the purest lyrics to describe an indescribable time in a person’s life.

“Though my head’s been known to give me hell / This heart of mine is just something else, yeah / But the best part of, part of me is you / Is, is you / Yeah the best part of me, part of me is you / Is you.”

Dealing With Loss: “Drink a Beer”- Luke Bryan

Losing someone you love is a difficult, but inevitable part of life. Thankfully there are songs penned by country artists to help us cope with the pain and grief. Luke Bryan doesn’t try to diminish how it feels to lose someone. He just simply tells his own truth.

“Can’t believe you’re really gone / Don’t feel like going home / So I’m gonna sit right here / On the edge of this pier / Watch the sunset disappear / And drink a beer”

Right Now: “Here’s To The Good Times”- Florida Georgia Line

Regardless of what stage of life you are currently in or what you want for your own future, the best time in your life to celebrate is right now. We all have a lot to be thankful for, to look forward to and to celebrate, and this Florida Georgia Line song is the perfect soundtrack to keep us pumped on our journey.

“Drop down the top down on the Pontiac / Where ever you wind up is where the party’s at / Break out the bottle of Bacardi black / And don’t look back ‘cause / Here’s to the good times, here’s to the sunshine.”

Kassi Ashton Stuns In “Pretty Shiny Things” Video

Pretty Shiny Things

Filmed in Nashville and directed by Kristin Barlowe, one of our favorite rising artists and 2019 Artists to Watch, Kassi Ashton has released a stunning official music video for her newest, powerful track, “Pretty Shiny Things.”
Styled in a blush-toned silk gown, diamond-embellished earrings, with her hair teased up high and a dolled up face of makeup, Ashton is seen laying on an auditorium stage, surrounded by literal pretty shiny things; glamorous trinkets of sorts, mirrors, and chandeliers. Ashton’s hauntingly beautiful presence corresponds flawlessly with the painful honesty in this track. The message in this song is exceedingly relatable; the pressures women face to put on a facade, despite the pain we may feel on the inside. Ashton’s staggering vocals on the acoustic track add depth and simplicity to such a lyrically heavy song.

The songstress shared some insight behind the video, “In our society, it feels like we’re forced to evaluate our reflection everywhere we turn, always waiting for a confirmation from someone else that we are enough. Putting that, and something so personal for me, into a visual is a weird task. I wanted it to feel real, not forced. Kristin Barlowe helped me so much in marrying what I wanted artistically with the real emotional monologue.” In a recent interview with Paper Magazine, Ashton revealed the inspiration and intention for this video was to mimic a ballerina doll trapped in her jewelry box.

Watch the video below.

We first heard the song when the singer-songwriter debuted it at The Ryman Auditorium during CRS week in Nashville and we were automatically hooked on her honest lyrics. Ashton candidly continues to prove herself as an unapologetic artist that will not hold back, solidifying our choice to feature her as one of our Artists to Watch this year.

Keep up with Ashton on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to not miss any upcoming music releases.

“Pretty Shiny Things” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Lauren Duski

In a small town in Northern Michigan, our next Swag Spotlight cultivated a love for all genres of music and learned what real true love was from her family. Lauren Duski who was the runner-up of season 12 of The Voice, has just released her debut EP,  Midwestern Girl and is proud of the stories she now gets to tell as a singer-songwriter no longer letting fear control her life. Her parents gave her a well rounded musical education from Jackson Browne and Bob Seger to Celine Dion and Elton John, but ’90s country music was always a staple. “I loved music so much and even though I didn’t always understand what these artists were saying,  I could feel the emotion and it made me feel something as a kid,” she tells us in our recent interview.

After spending holidays forcing her family to watch her sing around the house, her mother entered her into a karaoke competition in their hometown when she was 9 years old. “I got up there and rocked “Heads Carolina, Tails California” by Jo Dee Messina and I will never forget being up on stage and seeing how music moves people and how it resonated with people,” Duski says.  “People were having a blast and I was addicted, and that was the moment I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

She graduated from the University of Michigan with all intentions to go to dental school, but then she had an opportunity to open for Thompson Square, and after years of not being on stage, she once again felt the high of performing and connecting with an audience. She made the move to Nashville in 2013, spending three years not having enough confidence to really pursue the artist career and spending all of her time in writing rooms. She recalls one night calling her mom to tell her that she wanted to move home and apply to dental school, little did she know the very next day she would get a call to audition for The Voice. After the competition show ended she knew that was when she had to put the work in, taking a year and a half to write and record her first EP which she was finally ready to release to the world and to all of the fans she had garnered over the years.

Midwestern Girl is the perfect compilation of heartfelt storytelling and her sultry vocal abilities simply connect you to her lyrics. Each song is relatable, Duski taking you through poignant parts of life and singing about her insecurities and how it’s okay to embrace them. “Over life you build layers and layers, experiencing bullying as a kid, being socially awkward through high school and in college, just always being super uncomfortable in my own skin, I remember choosing to pursue music again and being so scared to be up on stage, it hit me how insecure I was,” she honestly explains. “Having awareness at that moment, maybe this is what I need to write and tell people, I am so glad I did, it has given other people the courage to say ‘I’m not okay too and that’s okay but I am working on it’.

The project ends with the most tender, sad topics that Duski turned into an incredible song with cowriters Liz Rose and Brandon Hood. Written in an hour, “The Weather (Grandpa’s Song)” is a tribute to her grandfather and how hard it was to watch him after losing his wife, her grandmother two Christmases ago. “She was sick for a while so I was prepared for it but what I wasn’t prepared for was watching my grandpa try to pick up the pieces and navigate life without her, it was really difficult,” she pauses, clearly emotional as she tries to explain the situation. She comments on their love and how it inspires her every single day. “It’s been so special to end the EP that way, to honor my family that way, it was a real treat, they were the reason why, when I think about love I think about them,” she says. “It’s been wonderful to have that example in my life.”

As one of the members of the CMT Next Women of Country class of 2019, Duski is looking forward to the year ahead and releasing two more projects that will reveal more of the music she has been working on. To keep up with Lauren Duski be sure to follow her on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter.

The 54th Annual ACM Awards Gave Us Incredible, Inspiring Performances

The 54th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards was full of first-time collaborations and performances. To start off the show, Florida Georgia Line performed “Can’t Hide Red” with Jason Aldean, who is featured on the track on their new album Can’t Say I Ain’t Country. Tyler Hubbard of FGL was decked out in red, white and blue during the performance.

Collaborations that stood out last night included Maren Morris featuring Brothers Osbourne as they performed “All My Favorite People” off her new album Girl. The backdrop was neon signs from the iconic Santa’s Pub and Losers Bar and Grill in Nashville. Luke Combs took the stage again after singing “Beautiful Crazy” to perform “Brand New Man” with Brooks & Dunn. Combs featured on this track on the newly released Reboot album. “This Is Us” star, Chrissy Metz took the stage for her first live television singing appearance to perform “Standing With You”. Artists such as Lauren Alaina, Mickey Guyton, Carrie Underwood, and other incredible background singers joined her on stage for a beautiful, breathtaking collaboration.

Other collaborations included Chris Stapleton performing “Simple Song” with his wife, Morgane, Eric Church – The Snake with Ashley McBryde, George Strait – “Run” with Miranda Lambert, Dan + Shay and Kelly Clarkson – “Keeping Score”, Dierks Bentley and Brandi Carlile – “Travelin’ Light” and Kane Brown and Khalid singing their pop-infused hit song “Saturday Nights”.

Two individual/group performances that stood out to us were Carrie Underwood’s “Southbound” and Little Big Town’s “The Daughters”. Underwood’s performance began outside on the pool deck. This imagery fits the summer tailgate song’s theme. She then walked into the arena with her dance crew/party guests behind her. Little Big Town’s performance was a much different vibe. Their dance crew was young ballet dancers who were circling around the Grammy award-winning group as they played their new, heartfelt, emotionally moving song. At the end of the performance, two of the girls ran up to the front of the stage. Those two girls were Daisy and Rebecca; Phillip Sweet’s and Kimberly Schlpman’s daughters, respectively.

Other first time performances included Luke Bryan – “Knocking Boots”, Blake Shelton –“God’s Country”, LANCO – “Rival”, Keith Urban who covered Foy Vance’s “Burden” and “Freedom” by Reba McEntire, who was introduced by her old co-star Melissa Peterman aka Barbara Jean on her sitcom called ‘Reba’.

Jason Aldean performed three songs before he received the ACM Artist of Decade award, “Lights Come On”, “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Kelly Clarkson and “Dirt Road Anthem”.

Overall, a historic night in country music. It was amazing watching all the collaborations and the live versions of songs artists have yet to perform in concert! To see all of last night’s winners, check out our latest blog post! If you missed the performances, you can watch them all here on CBS.com

Watch Thomas Rhett’s Colorful Video for “Look What God Gave Her”

A song about how much he loves his wife; a topic that ACM Male Vocalist of the Year Thomas Rhett sings about best. Nashville’s biggest family man was back at it, releasing the music video for his lead single “Look What God Gave Her” from his upcoming album, Center Point Road. Watch it below:

In a color-blasted, CGI-built set, the video shows Rhett dancing, playing guitar, drumming and of course, singing to his wife, Lauren Akins. His children, Willa Gray and Ada James, the women from Nashville’s Thistle Farms and the founder of Love + One, a Christian organization that helps at-risk children and families in Uganda, were also featured in this video.

“When we started talking about the music video, it was natural to include Lauren, but I also wanted to include other inspirational women who are doing some amazing things,” said Thomas Rhett in a recent press release. “Rather than hire actors for the video we connected with the founder of Love One and her family, the women of Thistle Farms and an incredible artist who also did our art for the single cover to come be featured. Being able to spotlight them and celebrate these strong women along with my wife and daughters was such a special experience.”

Throughout the video, you see artist Syndey Clawson, daughter of hit songwriter Rodney Clawson, in a green jumpsuit creating something with black paint on the ground. As the video fades out, a painting of Rhett is revealed; a cool ending to a very artistic music video.

Akins has appeared in many of Rhett’s videos in the past such as “Die a Happy Man”, “Vacation”, “and Star of the Show”, “Craving You” and Life Changes”. This is ironic because Rhett says she is not totally comfortable with starring in these videos.  “Lauren is the best sport, especially since she doesn’t love being in front of the camera,” Rhett told CMT.

Like most of Rhett’s videos, “Look What God Gave Her” was directed by TK McKamy. McKamy has directed videos for Florida Georgia Line, Lady Antebellum, Chris Lane, RaeLynn and many other country artists. He has won two CMT awards including the 2016 Male Video of the Year for Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man” and the 2017 Duo Video of the Year for FGL’s “H.O.L.Y.”, and two CMA awards including the 2015 Video of the Year for Maddie & Tae’s “Girl in a Country Song” and the 2018 Video of the Year for Rhett’s “Marry Me”.

New Yorkers can catch Rhett on his Very Hot Summer Tour in Holmdel, New Jersey at PNC Banks Art Center, and New York at Madison Square Garden. Dustin Lynch, Russell Dickerson, and his father, Rhett Akins will be joining him. For tickets and more info click here.

To keep up with Thomas Rhett, follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

“Look What God Gave Her” is available everywhere you buy or stream music. Rhett’s upcoming fourth album Center Point Road drops May 31st but is available for pre-order now. You can listen to this song and more recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

ACM Recap: Dan + Shay, Keith Urban and Kacey Musgraves Win Big

The ACMs took place last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Host, Reba McEntire suggested they change the name of the show to “Dan + Shay’s Excellent Adventure.” The Grammy award winning duo walked away with three ACM awards last night including Vocal Duo of the Year, Single and Song of the Year for their double platinum hit song “Tequila”.

“I think somebody got the cards mixed up tonight”, Dan Smyers said when he and Shay Mooney walked up to the stage for the third time. “This is such an incredible category to be a part of…we are all winners tonight.”

Other big winners included Keith Urban, who won Entertainer of the Year. This is Urban’s tenth ACM award but first for Entertainer of the Year. Urban had a big 2018, playing over 60 venues on his Graffiti U World Tour. Urban stripped this award from three-time defending Entertainer of the Year, Jason Aldean. However, Aldean will happily head back to Nashville, receiving the ACM award for Artist of the Decade, an award he was given to by last decade’s recipient, the king, George Strait.

“That’s the reason I wear the cowboy hat, right here so thank you very much”, Aldean said pointing at Strait. “I look out and I see a lot of artists who’ve had a hell of a decade…I feel very fortunate to have this.”

Aldean was well deserving of the award. The thirteen-time ACM award winner has 19 number one hits, 8.7 million albums sold, 4.3 billion digital streams and 10 million headlining tickets sold.

The Male and Female Artists of the Year were Thomas Rhett and Kacey Musgraves. Rhett had a busy 2018 touring with Kenny Chesney on his Trip Around the Sun tour and headlining his own Life Changes Tour. Musgraves, who also received the Album of the Year award for Golden Hour, is loving 2019 as she can place these two ACM awards right next to her three Grammys.

“I have to say this awards goes out to any women or girl or anybody really, that is maybe being told that her perspective or her style is too different to work”, Musgraves said after winning Female Artist of the Year. “Just stay at it; it’ll work out.”

Many awards were announced before the show. These included Old Dominion for Group of the Year, Luke Combs for New Male Artist, Ashley McBryde for New Female Artist, LANCO for New Group/Duo, Chris Jason’s “Drunk Girl” for Video of the Year and Dierks Bentley and Brothers Osbourne’s “Burning Man” for Musical Event of the Year.

Billy Ray Cyrus Collaborates on “Old Town Road” Remix

I got the horses in the back / Horse tack is attached / Hat is matte black / Got the boots that’s black to match

Billboard recently removed Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” from the Hot Country Charts on March 26th. Billboard told Rolling Stone “While ‘Old Town Road’ incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version. Lil Nas X responded by dropping a remix of the song featuring country icon, Billy Ray Cyrus on April 5th. As of Friday afternoon, the song is #1 on iTunes and is the #1 trending topic on Twitter.

“Old Town Road” was released in December of 2018 and gained popularity through the social media app, Tik Tok as a part of the “Yeehaw Challenge” meme. This is where users shoot short videos of themselves dressed in everyday clothing with this song in the background. When the chorus came in (“I got the horses in the back”) the user would suddenly be seen in cowboy/cowgirl attire.

Lil Nas X categorized “Old Town Road” in the country genre on SoundCloud but now describes it as “trap country”. As the meme grew in popularity, so did the song as it debuted on the Billboard Hot Country Charts at number 19 on March 16th.

The unlikely duo of Lil Nas X and Cyrus got together after Cyrus expressed his disappointment about the removal on Instagram writing “Don’t try and think inside the box. Don’t think outside the box. Think like there is no box. #HorsesInTheBack”

Cyrus was too once taken off the country charts. On April 3rd via Twitter, Cyrus gave Lil Nas X some inspiration: “When I got thrown off the charts, Waylon Jennings said to me ‘Take this as a compliment’ means you’re doing something great! Only Outlaws are outlawed. Welcome to the club!”

Other artists expressed their support of the Atlanta-born artist on social media including Florida Georgia Line. Their motto for 2019, “Can’t Say I Ain’t Country” is perfect for Lil Nas X as well. The duo tweeted this out on Monday:

Lil Nas X

“Old Town Road” may be the first big hit for Lil Nas X but Cyrus is used to the attention. His first album, Some Gave All debuted at number one and stayed there for 17 weeeks in 1992. It’s hit single, “Achy Breaky Heart” became a phenomenon and went mulit-platinum. He has put out fifteen studio albums and seven top ten hits on the Billboard Hot Country Charts. His 16th album, The SnakeDoctor Circus will be released this spring.

Maren Morris Stuns In Pink Singing “The Bones” on Ellen

It seems country superstar Maren Morris is giving the world more and more to be excited about, since the release of her number one album GIRL last month. Earlier today, the songstress took her unique swagger, killer style, and catchy tunes to the stage, performing on ‘Ellen’.

Unlike previous TV performances, where she sang her current single “Girl,” Morris chose to sing another song off her sophomore record entitled “The Bones.” The soulful and enticing track pays homage to the fact that if a relationship is built on a solid foundation of trust and honesty, then the couple can get through anything together.

The superstar shared on Instagram that her outfit inspiration for this performance was “edgy Glinda”. Donning a pink, 80’s inspired dress, matching light pink thigh high boots and luscious long, blonde locks, Morris took the stage after a kind introduction from host, Ellen DeGeneres, “This Sunday night our next guest is nominated for the ACM Female Vocalist of the Year. Here to perform “The Bones” off her brilliant new CD, Maren Morris.” The singer-songwriter engaged the audience with both her creative lyrics and sultry vocals, giving fans a taste for what her headlining tour, ‘Girl The World Tour’ might look like. Tune in this Sunday night to see if Morris takes home the coveted Female Vocalist of the Year award at the 54th ACM Awards on CBS.

The tour hits the New York area twice next month, stopping in Brooklyn in May 3rd and New York City’s Terminal 5 on May 4th. For tickets and more tour information, head to marenmorris.com.

To keep up with Morris, follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
