Jon Pardi Gets Engaged During Sold Out Ryman Show

Last night Jon Pardi continued to celebrate his Heartache Medication album release by performing for the second night in a row at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The sold-out crowd watched as the singer-songwriter played songs from the new album as well as his biggest hits from the past.

During his encore, Pardi shocked fans by stopping the show to propose to his girlfriend, Summer Duncan right on stage. Of course, she said ‘Yes’ which garnered a huge standing ovation from the crowd, making it truly a memorable moment for all in attendance.

Dierks Bentley shared a unique shot of the moment from the side of the stage with the caption: “My man! @jonpardipics crushing the @theryman stage and crushing life… so proud of you pal. Killer show with my all time fav encore. Congrats to you and @summerfawn_duncan,”

Pardi’s ‘Heartache Medication Tour’ will continue through the fall, for the full list of tour dates head to jonpardi.com.

Congratulations to the beautiful couple!

Country Music Artists Who Started Out As Songwriters

Behind every one of our favorite songs is a team of songwriters, who are quietly creating beautiful lyrics and enticing melodies. In some cases, like with “Humble and Kind,” by Lori McKenna, a single songwriter is the brains behind the entire song. Lately, it seems songwriters are stepping out into the limelight, releasing their own music to the world as solo artists.

Here are some of our favorite songwriters turned solo artists:

HARDY

HARDY is the man behind several number one songs. Most recently he co-wrote “God’s Country” for Blake Shelton, as well as, “Up Down” for Morgan Wallen. For the last year or so, the singer-songwriter has ventured out on his own, releasing two EP’s THIS OLE BOY and WHERE TO FIND ME, while also creating a masterpiece of a collaborative full-length record called HIXTAPE, Vol. 1. In his short time center-stage, HARDY has toured with the likes of Wallen, Florida Georgia Line, and Dan + Shay. This December, we’ll finally get to catch a full set from the rising artist, when he embarks on his first headlining tour. We are pumped to see what HARDY brings to the table next with his creative and unique music. Check out our interview with him to learn more about his transition from songwriter to artist.

Chris Stapleton

Before he shot to stardom with his debut record Traveller, Chris Stapleton was one of Nashville’s most respected songwriters. Stapleton co-wrote Kenny Chesney’s number one, “Never Wanted Nothing More,” George Strait’s “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright,” and Luke Bryan’s “Drink a Beer.” He’s even ventured out of the genre, both collaborating on songs for Grammy winner, Adele and Ed Sheeran, as well as, performing with Justin Timberlake and P!nk. As a solo artist, Stapleton is the recipient of five Grammy Awards, several Academy of Country Music Awards, as well as, many Country Music Awards. It’s clear that he will continue to be a staple in the music industry for decades to come.

Lee Brice

Since 2006, Lee Brice has warmed our hearts with his lyrics and made our souls dance with his melodies. Before making it as a solo artist, Brice co-wrote songs for Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, and Garth Brooks. It wasn’t until 2010 that he released his debut record Love Like Crazy, which garnered nominations for its title track. Even after finding success with his own music and releasing four albums, Brice still finds time to write for other artists. Most recently he co-wrote “Boy” for Faith Hill. It has been two years since Brice gave us new music of his own, so we’re hopeful that he has more music in the works in 2020!

Maren Morris Songwriter

Photo Credit: Justin Aharoni for NYCountry Swag

Maren Morris

One of our favorite songstresses in the industry, Maren Morris, started her incredible career as a songwriter. She penned songs for artists like Tim McGraw, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie James Decker, and Brothers Osborne. Now she is one of the most notable women singer-songwriters in country music. Her sophomore record GIRL has already broken records and the title track was the first song by a female to grab the top spot on country radio in months. As if Morris isn’t busy enough, she continues to expand her platform, spreading the message of female empowerment and strength, as one of the members of the new all female super-group The Highwomen. We admire Morris’ confidence and look forward to her future success.

Josh Kerr

Hit songwriter, Josh Kerr recently exploded on to the scene as a solo artist! In just a month, he has garnered attention for his debut songs, “Still Our Town,” and “Oklahoma,” as well as for proposing to Maddie & Tae’s, Taylor Dye. Musically speaking, Kerr has penned Keith Urban’s top 20 hit, “Never Comin’ Down,” Abby Anderson’s “GOOD LORD,” as well as, “If My Heart Had a Heart” by Cassadee Pope and several songs on Kelsea Ballerini’s debut album. Most recently, he even co-wrote Maddie & Tae’s “Bathroom Floor.” Kerr is already a respected songwriter and producer in Nashville, and we cannot wait to see how his career as a solo artist will blossom.

Ingrid Andress

One of our favorite new songstresses, Ingrid Andress started her career as a songwriter. Before she shared her own prolific music with the world, she wrote for artists such as Alicia Keys, Sam Hunt, and Charlie XCX. Andress even received co-writer credits on Lauren Jenkins record No Saint, which was released earlier this year. She’s one of the most unique vocalists in country music right now, but her exquisite knack for storytelling will always be paramount. We can’t wait to see how her way with words and arrangements will manifest in more of her own music in the future.

Cole Swindell Releases “Right Where I Left It” from his Down Home Sessions

Cole Swindell Right Where I Left It

The fourth song of Cole Swindell’s fifth EP Down Home Sessions V is here. Written by Swindell, Cole Taylor, and Michael Carter, “Right Where I Left It” is a song everyone who has moved away from home can relate to.

When you’re younger, you can’t wait to move away as far as possible and start your new adventure. However, once you get that freedom, it’s easy to get lost in all the action and lose perspective of who you are. This track reminds you that no matter how long it takes to go back, your hometown is always going to be there for you and allow you to find your true self again.

“Is right where I left it / Since I left it ain’t changed at all / I guess sometimes you don’t know / What you got till you’re gone / Couldn’t wait to get out / Had to chase some dreams down / Ain’t it funny how I found all I needed / Right where I left it”

This is the fourth song released from the EP as Swindell has released one song a month since June. We can’t wait for the entire EP to be released in October.

After a busy summer, the singer-songwriter has no plans of slowing down. Swindell is currently on the Luke Bryan Farm Tour with Mitchell Tenpenny, DJ Rock, and Bryan. He also has quite a few solo dates coming up. Find out if the Georgia native is coming to a city near you by checking out https://www.coleswindell.com.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Update: Jon Langston

Jon Langston

Earlier this year we interviewed Jon Langston to find out more about his backstory and how he made his way to Nashville. Check out our original Swag Spotlight by clicking here. More recently, we caught up with the “Now You Know” singer to chat about how things have changed for him in 2019 and his incredible run on Luke Bryan’s ‘Sunset Repeat Tour’.

The Georgia native who fell in love with Alan Jackson and country music when he was young, was immersed in the football way of life from a young age, playing in college and hoping to continue to play long after that. Unfortunately, when he was forced to hang up his football pads because of injuries, Langston decided to pick up a guitar to help him process through that time in his life. “Writing songs and music helped me get through that tough time, and it was like a therapy to me, little did I know it was going to become a career and a passion that I love,” he tells us.

Starting in May, Langston had the great opportunity of opening for Cole Swindell and Luke Bryan on the ‘Sunset Repeat’ Tour across the country in 30+ venues. “It’s amazing to go out every single night on this tour and see the amazing country fans out there, I am singing a few of my songs and I am seeing people singing and dancing to my songs,” he tells us. “Being in front of that big of a crowd, that’s new to me and it’s fun to learn how to, engage with a crowd that may not know all of your songs and have fun with it.”  He also explains how important it was to be able to sit side stage each night and not only watch the way Luke Bryan engages with his crowd but also works with his band and the crew. Bryan becoming a great mentor for the rising country artist. “I’m very lucky, very blessed and very thankful to be apart of this, I never thought I would be here, I remember being front row and watching Luke Bryan and now I am on the stage with him”.

We caught the tour twice when it came to Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater back in July. Check out our full recap of the weekend here.

His latest release, “Now You Know” was penned along with Brock Berryhill and Brad Clawson and it was the first time the three of them were together in a writing room. “We wanted just a fun, lifestyle song that just kind of painted the picture, of kind of the fun of who we are, small town guys who just like to have a cold beer on a Friday night, just to paint that picture in a rockin’ song.” He explains that the song itself was written quickly because all they had to do was list the things they liked to do. “I would look around during that song and everyone is united and raising their glasses, kind of saying, we are all here, we are all the same and it’s such a cool moment during that song”. The track which is guitar-heavy, Langston laughs plays much better to a big crowd in an arena and is geared towards those live moments rather than an intimate set in a bar somewhere.

As the Sunset Repeat tour finishes up, the last date being October 12th in Raleigh, NC, Langston has zero plans of slowing down or taking any breaks. His own headlining pub fall tour, The Bird Dog Tour which kicked off with a sold out show in Nashville will continue throughout November. Full list of tour dates available at jonlangston.com.

Fans can also look forward to a brand new EP titled, Now You Know from the singer-songwriter on October 25th.

To keep up with Jon Langston follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Devin Dawson Premieres His Version of “Truck I Drove In High School’

Devin Dawson My Take Truck

While we anxiously wait for more new music, singer-songwriter Devin Dawson is putting his own spin on some of our favorite songs that he has penned for other artists. Back in July, he released his version of Blake Shelton’s “God’s County,” which fans automatically gravitated towards. And just last week, Dawson announced his new project, a video series showcasing his rendition of songs he has written for other artists. He officially released the first video in the series last week singing Mitchell Tenpenny’s “Truck I Drove In High School.”

“I thought it would be cool to record more songs I’ve written for other artists… but from my perspective,” shared Dawson in a recent press release. Filmed in his signature black and white, Dawson continues to stay true to his “Dark Horse” mentality in his reimagined rendition. The stripped-down version features the singer in a dark and moody room, sitting on a stool with his guitar. Despite the ambiance, the usually serious looking vocalist lets a few smiles slip out, as he played the song.

Dawson’s version feels personal, nostalgic, and emotive. Although we love Tenpenny’s version too, the juxtaposition of Dawson’s laid-back rendition is equally as fresh and cool. Tenpenny even shared on his Instagram that he almost didn’t want to record the song because of how much he loved Dawson’s demo. Check out our Swag Session with Mitchell Tenpenny from 2017 where he played the track for us in the middle of Times Square.

According to Dawson, “MY TAKE is a vehicle to show songs that have been really important to [him] before releasing new music; it is really inspiring to get back to the songs that I loved that maybe weren’t 100% me at the time,” adding, “recording them was freeing and fun and I hope my fans dig MY TAKE on these songs as much as I do.” It will be interesting to see how other songs on the ‘MY TAKE’ project match up against the originals!

The California native will be touring throughout Europe this October, returning to the United States in the latter half of the month as a supporting act on Kip Moore’s ‘Room to Spare: Acoustic Tour.” For tickets and more information head to devindawsonmusic.com.
