Our Swag Spotlight this week, Brennley Brown has been in love with music and performing for as long as she can remember. At only seventeen years old, she has honed her craft and is ready to reintroduce herself to the world on her own terms with music that she hopes inspires others and clearly tells her own unique story.

Growing up in Apple Valley, on a ranch and with classic country musicians such as Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton, blasting through the speakers, Brown discovered her love for music at an early age. At just five years old, the natural-born talent mesmerized the audience at her kindergarten talent show with her rendition of Faith Hill’s “Mississippi Girl.” Her parents knew then that they had an entertainer on their hands. She continued to play shows and perform at open mic nights throughout her childhood, both singing and playing guitar, but it wasn’t until her mom got sick with Lyme disease that the songstress knew how important music truly was to her.

“For me, that’s when music became something more than what I just listened to on the radio or played in my dad’s truck. It became something that became very important to me. It was a safe place, a sanctuary for me during that time. Really my faith, my music, and my family were the there top things in my life.”

Continuing to rely on music and her family, Brown landed different gigs in the industry. Since the age of twelve, she went back and forth to Nashville to write songs, as well as, worked in voiceover and acting for big networks, such as Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel. Currently, she voices ‘Leyla’ on the Netflix series “Dragon Rescue Riders.”

During that time, Brown was invited to audition for the twelfth season of NBC’s The Voice, where she found herself making it further than she ever thought. She reflected on that experience, during the interview, calling it a “crazy, crazy experience,” for her at just fourteen years old, adding “I was on Team Blake [Shelton] and then stolen by Gwen Stefani. It’s such a great experience, a great stepping stone in my journey.” The star in the making made it to the finals of her season and garnered the recognition she deserved for her unique talent.

As an artist, Brown shared with us that her goal is to bring awareness to the disease her mother battled, as well as, to the healing power of music. “Music is healing. […] Music can make you feel happy, sad, it may bring back a memory, but it’s so healing in so many different ways.” She decided to wait three years before releasing her own music to the world because she wanted to hone in on her craft and what she truly wanted to say in her music.

Finally, just last week, on November 1st, Brown released her debut single “Keep Coming Back” to the world. The song was carefully cultivated with influences from an array of genres, ultimately culminating in a fresh new, different, and uniquely enticing sound. For Brown, the inspiration for the track stems from her own experiences in her life sharing with us a little bit about how the song came to fruition.

“I remember there was something kinda weighing on my heart. For me being 17 years old, I’m kinda in that place, where I can go to college, where I can take more years and really dive into my education, and kinda put music aside for a moment, and choose maybe the smarter path,” but ultimately the singer reveals, “I just get pulled back to music. When you’re given a gift or a calling in or your life or a dream, it’s gonna have its challenges, its up and downs, its trials that you’re going to go through, but having that dream inside you- it’s not there for no reason, like it’s going to continue to be a part of you, no matter what trial or what thing you have to overcome, you’re going to keep coming back to it, and keep pushing, and keep working towards your dream.”

Brown’s unique perspective and her powerful voice will continue to take center stage in her next single, which will be released on January 24th, her 18th birthday. On top of that, she is anticipating that her debut EP will drop in March of 2020. Expect to hear a lot coming soon from this rising artist, as she makes her mark on the industry!

Miranda Lambert Celebrates ‘Wildcard’ Album Release at iHeart NYC

One of the most decorated country artists of her generation, Miranda Lambert just released her seventh studio album entitled Wildcard. The record is the lyricist’s homecoming back to her iconic sound and clever song-writing. To celebrate the longevity of her career and the release of the new record, Lambert and her band headed to iHeartRadio theater in downtown Manhattan to celebrate with an intimate group of fans. NYCountry Swag was there to celebrate her monumental feat.

The first thirty minutes was hosted by radio DJ, Brooke Taylor, as the songs and interview were broadcasted live on the radio station. Taylor and Lambert talked about her success as a female country artist, her favorite songs off the new project, as well as, the songstress’ responsibility as a mentor to other female artists in the industry, which she embraces fully.

During the broadcast, Lambert sang “Mama’s Broken Heart,” and three songs off the new LP, including “It All Comes Out in The Wash,” “Bluebird,” and “Tequila Does.” Although all four songs are fun and beautiful in their own right, “Bluebird” was easily the crowd’s favorite, illustrating Lambert’s sentiment that the song is “More of a feeling. It’s just special.”

Lambert really came into her own on stage, breathing a sigh of relief, when the recorded version of the segment was over. She delivered a killer thirty-minute set, playing several songs that spanned her career. According to the singer, “the fans’ feedback [is] all that matters.” Clearly her true fans approved, as the entire crowd sang each and every cut she sang at the top of their lungs.

The performance included songs like “Kerosene,” “Mess with My Head,” “Gunpowder and Lead,” “Heart Like Mine,” and one of her classics “Airstream Song.” Some special moments came towards the end of her set when she coined her new song “White Trash,” her ‘biography’. The song personified Lambert to a T, and fans clearly loved it. “Automatic,” another fan-favorite, had the intimate room feeling like it was Madison Square Garden.

Overall, Lambert proved, yet again, that she does it all for the fans and the betterment of women in country music. She’s a complete professional, and we have no doubt that she will find even more success with her upcoming ‘2020 Wildcard Tour’, kicking off this January in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Kane Brown Releases “For My Daughter” A Stunning Tribute To Kingsley

On October 29th, rising star Kane Brown’s first daughter was born. On November 1st, just three days after the birth of Kingsley Rose, he released the heartfelt tribute, “For My Daughter”, written in the style of a letter for his little girl. “I wrote this song when I found out we were officially going to become parents. I meant every word, and cannot wait to watch her grow up,” Brown shared in a press release.”

He first teased the song on October 7th, explaining to fans that it would be released as soon as his daughter was born. There was an immediate response: 7,000 comments and counting on the first teaser. For the past 24 hours, Brown has been trending on iTunes, listeners eagerly awaiting the arrival of the track.

It did not disappoint. The song is co-written by Brown with frequent collaborator Chase McGill and songwriting legend Tom Douglas, and the verses are like a conversation just between Brown and his daughter.

“And not just say I love you but show you what it means/I grew up without a dad, I’m gonna be the best one I can be,” he sings on the first verse. The chorus is where he promises Kingsley that he’s going to break the cycle and drive down his path, telling her that history doesn’t have to repeat itself.

The production on “For My Daughter” is stunning. The song opens with swelling harmonic fiddles and guitar, and it transcends through the verses and choruses. It’s produced by Dann Huff, who has mastered the sound of 2019 style neo-country. It works wonderfully paired with the content of the song, as to let the lyrics and story shine the most throughout.

“For My Daughter” is the most personal, confessional song Brown’s released, and yet there’s nothing too on-the-nose about it. It’s touching, thoughtful & just the right amount of personality mixed with universality. This song may or may not become a radio hit, but it will always be the first song Brown wrote for Kingsley, and that has priceless value and longevity.

King Calaway Releases “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)”

Not even a month after they dropped their first studio album, Rivers, King Calaway is back with their first holiday release; a cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Happy Christmas (War is Over)”. Originally released in 1971 to celebrate the end of the Vietnam War, it has since been covered by a variety of artists including Neil Diamond, Celine Dion, REO Speedwagon, Maroon 5 and many others. Now, we get to hear Nashville’s newest, rising country group record it.

This six-man group did not change any of the lyrics to this political, yet historic Christmas track, but definitely gave it their own personal touch. Instead of it starting with an acoustic guitar, King Calaway uses a piano and includes a violin that fades out when the lyrics come in. Throughout the song, the group’s signature harmonies take front and center and at the end, the violin comes back in to give this timeless song a new twist.

The group decided to choose this Christmas song specifically as it reflects the band’s collective spirit and strong belief in togetherness. King Calaway is very familiar with the idea of coming together as all six members are from different cultures, backgrounds, and regions spanning from Tennessee to Minnesota, all the way to Scotland.

“We really tried to convey messages of hope and happiness in the album Rivers we just released and wanted to continue that theme with the release of ‘Happy Christmas.’ We also wanted to pay homage to the great John Lennon – an artist who has influenced us as a band tremendously,” drummer Chris Deaton confessed in a recent press release. “When recording the track, we stayed very true to the original but were still able to instill what is quickly becoming that distinct King Calaway sound. We hope people love our take on this Christmas classic.”

NYCS First Impression: Miranda Lambert ‘Wildcard’

In many ways, the title of Miranda Lambert’s new album, Wildcard, is appropriate. For one, it marks her first release on Vanner Records/RCA Records Nashville. She also co-wrote all of the collection’s fourteen songs, and parted ways with her longtime producer, Frank Liddell, in favor of working with Jay Joyce. Sonically, the album also delivers on the title, showing Lambert returning to her roots as country’s femme-fatale/rebel with a cause, while also exploring her more rocking and tender sides.

For Lambert, Wildcard is quite the departure from 2017’s The Weight of These Wings. Her previous album was dark and brooding, showing the often clever songstress dismayed and different than the artist fans have come to know. “I always have a little bit of cheeky sarcasm in my songs and records. I feel like I missed that a little bit on The Weight of These Wings,” Lambert told Rolling Stone. “And I also needed to have fun. There were some fun moments on The Weight of These Wings, but just that whole portion of my life and art was not the funnest time. With this one I just wanted to cut loose a little bit and get back to the me that was willing to have fun with it and make fun of myself.”

Wildcard shows her cutting loose right out of the gate, opening with “White Trash.” It shows Lambert embracing her past and her reputation in a way that’s snarky and sarcastic. She may no longer live in a trailer park, but she’s still the same ol’ girl she always was. “I can’t keep my white trash off the lawn,” Lambert sings on the tongue-in-cheek track, “I can’t hide it in a closet/ I can’t stuff it in a trunk/ I always know there’s treasure/ Buried somewhere in the junk/ I can keep my roots from showing/ But I’m still dishwater blonde/ I can’t keep my white trash off the lawn.”

The album continues with up-tempo tracks, traversing from the poppy “Mess With My Head” with its heavy bass line to “It All Comes Out in the Wash,” which was Lambert’s first release from Wildcard. On “It All Come Out in the Wash,” Lambert sings one of country music’s most clever lines as of late, “Don’t sweat it, Tide stick’ll get it.”

Other highlights include the Gospel-tinged “Holy Water” and Lambert’s collaboration with Maren Morris on “Way Too Pretty for Prison.” The latter is a humorous take on the reasons why the duo shouldn’t kill a cheating husband. Think Brandy Clark’s “Stripes” here, as they sing “But we’re way too pretty for prison/ Hard time ain’t our kind of livin’/ And I don’t want to talk about/ The way those jumpsuits wash us out/ We’re way too pretty for prison.”

While the album is certainly a departure from Lambert’s previous downcast project, there are still moments of vulnerability and introspection. These songs include the album’s final track “Fire Escape,” “Settling Down,” “How Dare You Love,” and “Track Record.” On “Track Record,” Lambert is candid about the failures of her past relationships, owning up to her mistakes. “I can’t help it, I’m in love with love,” She admits here, recounting her failed relationships and her past as “checkered as the floor at the diner on Main Street.” “Girls like me don’t mean it,” She reasons lyrically, “But we don’t know better.”

“Bluebird” is one of the album’s most magical moments, having come from a poem. “Luke (Dick) had texted me the line from an old poem he had seen. It said something about keeping a bluebird in your heart and he said, ‘I want to write that with you because I feel like that’s what you did and that’s what we all do,’” Lambert revealed at an album preview show in Nashville, according to Billboard. “When we got in the room to write it, it felt really magical. Something about a bluebird is hopeful, even through blue times. When I sing this song, I feel a little flutter and I feel every single word I sing.”

Another highlight of the album is “Pretty Bitchin’,” which plays to Lambert’s strength as a lyricist, with an uncanny ability to turn a phrase, playing here on the word pretty. “I use what I’ve got/ I don’t let it go to waste/ I’m pretty from the back/ Kinda pretty in the face/ I hate to admit it/ But it didn’t stop me, did it? / Yeah, life’s pretty weird/ And life’s pretty great/ And life’s pretty good if we live it/ 1-2-3 Mississippi/ Sitting pretty damn pretty on this pretty life I’ve been given/ It’s pretty bitchin’.”

In fact, it’s “Pretty Bitchin'” that may best sum up Wildcard, which is, all in all, pretty bitchin’.

Canaan Smith Enlists Clever Wordplay In His New Track “Pour Decisions”

Round Here Records flagship artist and platinum hitmaker, Canaan Smith released his newest track “Pour Decisions” last Friday. In the song, written by Smith, Corey Crowder, Ernest Smith, and Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley, Smith remarks all the bad decisions he has made because of drinking.

“She ain’t gonna call / Baby’s long-gone / Ain’t nobody tellin’ me I’m doin’ somethin’ wrong / I’ll just sit right here drinkin’ beer, reminiscin’ / And proudly make a couple more pour decisions”

“Pour”, spelled incorrectly on purpose, is word-play for all the alcohol-influenced choices the protagonist in the song has made that caused him to be in the shape he is in now. Pouring himself too many drinks started a lot of fights with his girlfriend which led her to make a good decision and walk out on him.

Although it sounds sad, the track is very upbeat as the man does not seem to care about the whole situation and would rather be fishing with a beer in hand anyway. This drinking tune follows Smith’s “Life Ain’t Fair”; a love song about how lucky he is to have his wife, Christy. The two are expecting their first child next month.  He sings: “If I got what I deserved / I guarantee that I’d have nothing / Close to good as you for sure.” “Pour Decisions” is more like his previous two releases in “Beer Drinkin’ Weather” and “Country Boy Things”, as they are all feel-good, party vibes. He performed these three songs during his set on Florida Georgia Line’s Can’t Say I Ain’t Country Tour this past summer.

“We wrote ‘Pour Decisions’ down at Brian Kelley’s house in Grayton Beach, Florida,” Smith said in a recent press release. “It was a total blast — we even celebrated with a beach party after we finished it. Hope people have as good of a time listening to it as we did writin’ it.”

The Cadillac Three Release 2 Tracks & New Album Details

The Cadillac Three

Earlier last week, The Cadillac Three, composed of Jaren Johnston (Guitar and Lead Vocals), Kelby Ray (Steel Guitar), Neil Mason (Drums, Percussion, and Vocals), announced details of their fourth full-length album Country Fuzz to be released via Big Machine Records on February 7th, 2020. The trio broadcasted the emboldened news while performing at a hometown show in downtown Nashville. They marked the news with the release of two new singles “Back Home” and “Long After Last Call.” The album also features the previously released singles “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys” and “All The Makin’s Of A Saturday Night.”

We’ve spent the last two and a half years working on this album,” says the group’s Grammy-nominated frontman Jaren Johnston in the press release, “but our sound even since high school has always been the epitome of country fuzz – country, rock and just a little bit of funk.”

Sturgill Simpson Announces 2020 A Good Look’n Tour

Announced yesterday Sturgill Simpson is going on tour. Following the release of his album Sound & Fury, Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson has announced North American tour dates, the tour will feature special guests, Tyler Childers.  The A Good Look’n Tour will kick off February 21, 2020, in Birmingham, AL and hit cities such as New York, playing the iconic Madison Square Garden on May 15th, then on to Chicago, San Francisco, and Boston before concluding May 24, 2020, in Louisville, KY.

Simpson hit the road for a brief six-date club tour, where he donated 100% of the proceeds from these shows to the Special Forces Foundation – a nonprofit organization that provides immediate and ongoing support to the Special Forces community and their families. $1 from each ticket sold for the Sturgill Simpson: A Good Look’n Tour will also be donated to benefit the Special Forces Foundation.

NYCS Country Brunch ’19 Featuring Teddy Robb

This past weekend, (October 26th) NYCountry Swag hosted a Country Brunch event at IGC Hospitality‘s The Boogie Room located inside the Mondrian Park Avenue Hotel. The VIP guests arrived early to fill their bellies of the delicious brunch buffet offered by Cleo, the restaurant located on the first level of the hotel. Fans and industry alike enjoyed the quintessential brunch foods while chatting with fellow brunchers as DJ Nick Russo played country music to get everyone in the mood for the party. At 2 PM the VIPs grabbed a mimosa and headed downstairs to meet the rest of our GA guests who were already packing the nightclub and dancing along to DJ Mouse, playing the best country jams.

After a brief introduction from our Founder, Stephanie Wagner and Managing Editor, Christina Bosch, our featured artist and guest, Teddy Robb kicked off his hour-long set. Although he is a rising artist, the country fans in the room were immediately drawn to his lyrics, his charisma, and his undeniable vocal ability.

Robb of course, played the first track he ever released, “Lead Me On” as well as his current radio single “Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You”. Additionally, he played a slew of unreleased tracks including a crowd-favorite, “Who’s Bad For Who”. He also covered a unique version of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” and Kenny Chesney’s “Somewhere With You”. Check out clips in the recap video above.

After the acoustic, live music was over, DJ Mouse took the party up another notch, our guests jumped in our photo booth, showed off their dance skills on the dance floor and of course, grabbed a few more drinks.

Overall, fans of country music and followers of NYCountry Swag enjoyed the best afternoon of drinking, music and a great time with their friends. We have to give a huge thank you to Rally Patch for helping us to stop our next-day hangovers and to Josh Cellars for powering our mimosa bar! Thank you to everyone who spent the day with us! We can’t wait for the next one!
