Sam Hunt Releases A Studio Version of “Sinning With You”

Everyone has their opinion on New Year’s resolutions. Some take no part in them, some try to stick to their new goals, and others go all in. Sam Hunt’s had one since Summer 2019: that he would be turning in his sophomore album January 1st.

It’s January 3rd now, and Hunt has stayed true to his word. The second official single off SH2, titled, “Sinning With You” was released at midnight. He premiered the song in concert, and NYCS was in attendance when he played it at New York’s Country 94.7’s Stars and Strings event. Watch the full video above.

The pensive ballad was co-written by Hunt, Emily Weisband, Paul DiGiovanni, and longtime collaborator John Osborne. It’s production is beautiful in a take-it-slow kind of way. It leans on guitars to guide the melody, and has a simple snap and kick drum to lead the rhythm. There are some pretty harmonies that flow through the choruses and into the verses and bridge. It’s much simpler and more stripped back than any of his previous singles in the past few years.

“It’s a commentary on growing up in the South and conflict with religion, being in a [serious] relationship before you’re married and all that comes with that,” Hunt revealed to Billboard in September. The lyrics are obviously so personal to Hunt, but they are clever and catchy while still remaining poetic. “Your body was baptized / So disenfranchised/I was your favorite confession” He sings in the first verse. “My past was checkered / Your spotless record was probably in jeopardy”. It’s very clear that it’s about that tug-and-war many have when they’re in the in-between of being young and growing up, a topic Hunt explored on his previous record.

“Sinning With You” is probably the first song of Hunt’s that directly deals with religion. He toyed with it on a few songs on Montevallo and mentioned that his wife’s dad is a pastor on songs like “Drinkin’ Too Much” (“I hope your dad still prays for me”), but it’s the first time he has dived into his childhood like that. While songs about one’s religious identity can be hit or miss, Hunt has given fans a rare window into his personal life and his youth. For that reason, this song does feel different than his other songs. It’s almost risky; but that’s the reason Hunt became popular: he’s never been afraid to “go there” and take those risks.

Melodically, this is one of Hunt’s strongest songs. It has a momentum to it that makes you want to focus on the song. The lyrics are really the center of the track, so the gentle melody that has been created works wonderfully.

It’s unclear what the rest of the record will be like once it comes out. He’s exploring different topics and different sounds in his new songs, and it’s definitely an album to keep your eyes and ears out for in 2020. There’s no doubt that he has a big year ahead of him.

To keep up with Sam Hunt, you can find him on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook. To find him on tour in 2020, go to his website linked here.

“Sinning With You” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Morgan Wallen Kicks Off 2020 By Reminiscing in “This Bar”

Morgan Wallen This Bar

CMA New Artist of the Year nominee, Morgan Wallen uses the New Year and his new song “This Bar” to reflect on his past. In this track, written by himself, Ernest K, Charlie Handsome, Jackson Morgan and his friend HARDY, Wallen sings about the good and bad times and the lessons this particular bar has taught him over the years.

His first memory of the bar was his 21st birthday when he got too drunk on whiskey sours and almost got into a fight, leading him to be escorted out by the bouncer. From this, he learned how to control himself. Another story he shared was when he saw his ex, with whom he initially met at this bar, walk inside with another guy. This taught him how to cope with the breakups and how to get through the ‘moving on’ process.

Making mistakes and making new friends / I was growing up and nothing made sense / Learning how to live with a broken heart / I found myself in this bar

“Wrote this song with my buddies about some moments and times in my life that have made me who I am today,” Wallen wrote in a tweet on New Year’s Eve. “Some good, some bad, but all of ’em I can look back on and grin a little. Hope it makes you do the same.” The photo attached was of him with four other friends at a bar in 2014.

The first show of Wallen’s headlining Whiskey Glasses Roadshow Tour, was last night in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Along with that, he is joining Jason Aldean on his We Back Tour starting January 30th in South Carolina.

Since the release of his debut album If I Know Me in 2018, Wallen has released a cover of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up” and featured on Diplo’s “Heartless” and two songs on HARDY’s Hixtape Vol. 1, “He Went to Jared” and “Turn You Down”. We might be in the midst of a big 2020 from Morgan Wallen.

To keep up with Wallen, follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

“This Bar” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Tebey

Tebey

Continuing to shine our light on rising artists and talented singer-songwriters, our Swag Spotlight this week is Tebey. He is a creative that hails originally from just outside of Toronto, Canada with roots now firmly in Nashville, Tennessee for over a decade. The singer-songwriter chatted with us about his musical journey, his new single, and of course how he views the evolution of country music.

“I grew up listening to everything,” he tells us, naming country musicians like George Strait and Kenny Chesney as some of his top favorite country artists, adding, “But I also loved Boyz II Men, Nirvana and just kinda anything that was great. I have a very eclectic musical taste […]. I’ve always been a fan of music and I’m lucky enough to make it a career.”

In his several years in the industry, Tebey has found success working with many different artists all across the board, when it comes to genres. He has earned accolades as both a producer and a songwriter, working with artists like One Direction, Cher, Flo Rida, and even artists from the United Kingdom.

Fans can find Tebey’s eclectic experience and influences in his own music too. Although he identifies as a country artist, listeners can expect a unique sound and vibe from the budding artist. He shares, “I think music doesn’t really have borders anymore,” adding that streaming has helped artists and fans connect. “There’s a lot of great artists from Canada that are making music up there, but people here in the United States are able to get a hold of that music more easily than they were back of the day”

The genre-bending in country music is something that Tebey welcomes, agreeing with us that ‘good music is good music.’ The singer shared with us more about his experiences, backing up why he believes fans welcome the modern country sound and intermingling of genres. “I think now more than ever, your typical country music fans listen to more than one genre of music,” he explains. “I see it at my shows a lot, 22-year-old, 23-year-old kids, at my shows, I know for a fact that they are there because they’re a Tebey fan, but they’re also listening to Drake and ASAP Rocky.”

Tebey, even went on to say, “I think before country music wasn’t ‘quote on quote’ cool, but then you got artists like Taylor Swift and even a little while ago Rascal Flatts, people like that were making music that was crossing over. Thomas Rhett in particular is making music that is country, but it’s also reaching people outside of the genre.”

Like some of those cross-genre artists, Tebey is making music that fans from across the globe can relate to as well. Most recently, he released his new single “The Good Ones,” which is a duet with songstress, Marie-Mai. In the few short months, since it has been released, the song has garnered close to 2 million streams across platforms.

“I sat down with my co-writers that day in Nashville, and we started randomly painting the picture of this relationship and this girl driving in this Toyota Tacoma,” he started to tell us, adding, “We eventually ended up settling on the title “The Good Ones.” Tebey feels that the song showcases a universal message, stating “I think a lot of people are going to be able to relate to the lyric because we’ve all had relationships that have ended, we all have had relationships that we have lost.” Interestingly enough, the artist keeps songs close to his heart before releasing them, and “The Good Ones” is a track that still felt special years after it was written.

Before we let Tebey go, we had to check in with what he has planned for the new year. 2020 will be a year of getting his music out there and touring across the world. He already has plans for a tour in Canada and Europe, but shares that he might have to plan a United States tour too! Look out for new music coming towards the end of February in the meantime.

To keep up with Tebey follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“The Good Ones” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Swag Session Featuring Madison Kozak

One of the artists we are most excited about is Madison Kozak. Back in May, we chose her song “Graduation Day” as one of our Monthly Picks that we had on repeat and ever since then, we have loved watching her release great song after great song and came to find out in July that she was the flagship artist for Songs & Daughters, a female-driven record label in partnership with Big Loud Records and the label president is one of our Women of the Month, Nicolle Galyon.

During our Swag Session, Kozak performs “OMG ILY” her most recent release that will have you singing along almost immediately, and her first single to country radio, “First Last Name”. Watch the full performance and interview below.

Top 10 NYCountry Swag Moments of 2019

Brunch Group Shot top 10 moments

We just celebrated our 4th Birthday! That’s right, four years we’ve been building a community of country music fans in New York City! Let’s take a look back at 2019 and the top 10 moments that our company cherished most.

10. CRS (Country Radio Seminar) – Nashville, TN

For the second year in a row, Christina and Stephanie flew down to Nashville for the annual CRS or Country Radio Seminar,  an annual three-day convention where country music and the radio industry gather to exchange ideas, set trends, introduce brands, launch artists and make decisions that affect every aspect of the genre’s future. Covering the week as media, we took part in some incredible moments as the seminar celebrated its 50th year. We watched some of the genre’s biggest stars like Tim McGraw and Garth Brooks as well as some of our favorite rising artists at New Faces including Russell Dickerson and Jimmie Allen. It was an incredible 3 days of making musical memories. For the entire recap click here and for some of the best moments and the most exclusive shots, check out our highlight reel on Instagram here.

9. 53rd Annual CMA Awards – Nashville, TN

Just a few short weeks prior to the CMA Awards in Nashville, we decided that this would be the year we would fly down and experience the epic awards week for the first time. We flew down to cover all of the events surrounding the show including CMT Next Women of Country, the Broken Bow Records/BMG preparty, and after-party celebrating one of our Women of the Month, and songwriter of the year, Nicolle Galyon and of course, the awards show. For more on our incredible week check out our full recap here.

8. Taste of Country Festival – Hunter Mountain, New York

Another staple for our company each year is attending the Taste of Country Music Festival. This past year was our biggest yet, our merchandise booth featured the best country music gear and of course, our Hero Collection. We did a giveaway for Luke Bryan tickets and we hosted a ton of artist interviews. The weekend was a blast and we were particularly so excited to find out that both Adam Doleac and Tyler Rich rocked our gear during their sets.

Each day artists stopped by our booth to chat about their new music, playing a festival in New York and more. Check out our interviews with Walker HayesAdam DoleacRunaway JuneBrett EldredgeLindsay EllRoss EllisTyler RichLANCOMichael RayRyan Hurd, Josh Turner, and Brandon Lay. For the entire recap of the festival click here.

We are so looking forward to the festival next year, be on the lookout for TrailBlazer 2020 announcements coming soon!

7. Exclusive Swag Sessions and Swag Spotlights

Since 2017, we have loved featuring rising artists two ways, with our weekly Swag Spotlight interviews and our exclusive performances and interviews during our Swag Sessions. In 2019, we continued to highlight a new rising artist each Monday including artists like Kylie Morgan, Hailey Whitters, Jon Langston, Niko Moon, and 48 others. We have found this is a great way to learn about artist’s pasts, where they grew up, why they chose to pursue music and it’s awesome to introduce new music to our followers.

In 2019 we hosted artists like Cody Johnson, LOCASH, Runaway June, Tyler Rich, HARDY, Gone West, Mitchell Tenpenny, and many more in our exclusive Swag Sessions. During our time with each artist we got to hear stories about how they wrote or recorded their biggest songs, we heard brand new, unreleased music and we got to experience some of their first times in the Big Apple.

We are looking forward to working with even more rising and established artists in 2020.

6. NYCountry Swag Events – King Calaway Showcase, ‘Babes, Booze, & Brunch’, Manhattan By Sail, Country Brunch

In 2019 we brought back exclusive special events, something that our company’s foundation is based on. Kicking things off early in the year, NYCountry Swag hosted an exclusive showcase at Bowery Electric for a brand new band that hadn’t released any music. King Calaway, a group of 6 men hailing from all over the world are for sure the next big thing in country music and we gave NYC fans a chance to hear them first. We packed the venue, our followers trusting us that this was a night they would want to be a part of and joining us for the special introduction of the band, before they even had any music out! For more about the night click here.

In March we hosted our 2nd Annual Babes, Booze & Brunch event where we celebrated International Women’s Day with mimosas, a photo booth, hair and nail stations, and great performances from Lauren Davidson and Stephanie Quayle. For more about that event click here.

We spent the summer on the water with Manhattan By Sail. Four times between August and October we hosted a Country Edition and sailed the open seas with artists like Rob Bellamy, Carter Winter, Baker Grissom, and Kalie Shorr. New Yorkers joined us aboard the Clipper City sailboat as we took in the views and danced along to great country music.

Finally, we brought our Country Music and Mimosas Brunch back, with one of our favorite rising artists, Teddy Robb. Guests joined us at The Boogie Room, located inside the Mondrian Park Avenue Hotel for drinks, a great set by Teddy Robb, and to dance along to DJ Mouse. The memorable afternoon showed us that there is a reason this was the first event we ever hosted and that we will definitely continue to host more events like this in the future.

5. Our Team of Writers, Brand Ambassadors, and Volunteers for Taste of Country Festival 2019

Being able to grow our team, even more, this past year has been a huge accomplishment for our company. We love including country fans in our community, giving an opportunity to learn more about the music business and what it takes to run a small company. We are so grateful for the passion, dedication and true love that our team expresses and we hope to work and help cultivate our team even more in 2020.

4. The Hero Collection – Giving Back

Each month we are proud to donate to a different cause, supporting our heroes that risk everything to keep us safe and those unsung heroes fighting battles like Leukemia. This year we introduced our Orange Line in support of Leukemia Awareness and during the month of September donated proceeds to Cohen Children’s Medical Hospital. For more about our Hero Collection and to shop click here.

3. Russell Dickerson Shouts Out NYCountry Swag at Madison Square Garden

During his opening set for Thomas Rhett on the Very Hot Summer Tour back in September, Russell Dickerson, the very first artist that we ever worked with recalled playing for NYCountry Swag back in 2016. The remarkable validating moment for our company is above, being able to say we worked with such a superstar before he landed a record deal, before his debut album, and his three number one hits, is something we will always cherish.

2. NYCountry Swag Are Guests on Four Podcasts

This past year we had the pleasure of being interviewed for 4 different podcasts and it all started with Jill and Kate’s ‘Girls Just Pod To Have Fun’ Live Podcast back in May. After hosting the talented ladies for a Swag Session and really hitting it off, they asked us to be their featured guests that night when they hosted their LIVE podcast from Rockwood Music Hall. To listen to our episode click here.

We also had the opportunity to chat with the creators of FanLabel, a brand new app allowing fans to create fantasy record labels and pick which songs they think will do the best that week. We were able to explain what our company does, curate a playlist for fans to play along with and choose our favorite to win. Listen to the full podcast and download FanLabel here.

Next up, we called into The Sam Alex Show which is taped live in Nashville to chat with Sam about our company and tell him our favorite parts of 2019, who we’ve interviewed and our favorite merch item! Listen here.

Last but certainly not least, during our trip down to Nashville for the CMA Awards we stopped by the Cumulus Nash Campus to hang with our good friend, radio personality, and Breaking Thru Podcast host, Elaina Smith. We spent an hour getting real with Elaina about the highs and lows of running our business, mental health, our favorite moments, how we all met and more. It was a perfect way to end a great year and encourage everyone to take a listen.

1. Our Followers and Readers

As always, our favorite moment of 2019 is YOU. Our readers, the community of amazing country fans that like our posts, comment, interact and engage with us when they see us out at shows. We are so grateful and thankful that we have formed this amazing community of like-minded individuals. Thank you for wearing our merch, tagging us in pictures, attending our events, entering our giveaways and thinking of us throughout the year. Here’s to a BIG 2020!

Our Favorite Songs to Hit the Number One Spot on Country Radio in 2019

As the year comes to a close, we thought it would be fun to look back at some of our favorite songs that hit the top spot on the country charts in 2019.

Maren Morris Number One Songs

Justin Aharoni for NYCountry Swag (@jaharoni)

“GIRL”- Maren Morris

Maren Morris was one of the only ladies to land the top spot on the charts this year with her powerful title track “GIRL.” The song is a testament to finding your confidence and women supporting women. We hope more and more songs like this one are recognized in 2020 and that women continue to be more represented on country radio.

“Every Little Thing”- Russell Dickerson

One of our day one artists, Russell Dickerson landed his third consecutive number 1 single with his infectious track “Every Little Thing.” We could not be more proud of Dickerson and all his much-deserved success this year. He truly one of the greatest entertainers of our time, and we hope his songs continue to rise to the top!

“Whiskey Glasses”- Morgan Wallen

Morgan Wallen’s third single to country radio, “Whiskey Glasses” climbed the charts for a while before finally landing the coveted number 1 spot! The song is a true testament to creative songwriting and Wallen’s undeniable talent. Check out our interview with the singer-songwriter, where he talked with us about his success just before opening up for Florida Georgia Line and Dan + Shay on tour this summer.

“God’s Country”- Blake Shelton

One of the newer songs of 2019, “God’s Country” is an absolute smash hit. Written by one of our favorite rising artists, HARDY with Devin Dawson and Jordan Schmidt, the lyrics complemented by the production make it one of the most enticing songs of the year.  The song quickly received accolades and platinum status, so it is no surprise that it makes our list too!

“Beer Never Broke My Heart”- Luke Combs

Luke Combs can truly do no wrong! In just a few years, he has catapulted to fame and is one of the most respected male artists in the genre. His blend of traditional and modern sounds has landed him unprecedented success on the charts. “Beer Never Broke My Heart” marks his sixth consecutive number-one single, making him the first country artist to ever achieve this success with the first singles he ever put out to country radio.

“I Don’t About You”- Chris Lane

Chris Lane’s “I Don’t’ Know About You” is one of our favorite songs that was released this year. The jam was written by some of the most talented songwriters and artists in the industry, including Ashley Gorley, Hunter Phelps, Jameson Rodgers, and HARDY, who all deserve recognition as well. It is no wonder this song went number one! Watch our Swag Session interview with writers Hunter Phelps and Ashley Gorley below as they talk about the songwriting process.

“Prayed for You”- Matt Stell

It’s pretty exciting for us when one of our Swag Session artists find success on country radio! Our founder, Stephanie Wagner predicted that his debut you single “Prayed for You” would hit the number one spot back in September of 2018 when she chose the song as her monthly pick and she was right! The romantic love song is one you just can’t help but adore.

“Speechless”- Dan + Shay

After “Tequila” by Dan + Shay stayed at the top of the charts for what seemed like forever, the talented duo did it again with their follow up single, “Speechless.” Dan + Shay have had the most exciting last two years and continue to have more and more success each month. The song was certified triple platinum and is one of the duo’s most streamed songs ever!

“Even Though I’m Leaving”- Luke Combs

We have said it before and we will say it again, Luke Combs is a bonafide superstar. “Even Though I’m Leaving” became his seventh consecutive single to hit the number one spot the country charts. The Male Vocalist of the Year continues to release hit after hit and there is not an end in sight!

“One Man Band”- Old Dominion

Old Dominion released their newest record this year and found themselves with two number one hits, including “One Man Band.” The slow and soothing jam showcasing incredible song-writing and production, as well as a more vulnerable side of the band. We are so happy to see fans resonate with the softer side of the group!

“Remember You Young”- Thomas Rhett

With the year Thomas Rhett has had, we would be remiss not to add “Remember You Young” to our list. The nostalgic song is one of our favorites off his latest record, and we are so thrilled to see it finally land the top spot.

Let us know how your list compares to ours and what songs you hope to see on the charts in 2020!
