Canaan Cox Uses Unique Approach in Releasing New Music

Canaan Cox, "Take My Time"

Canaan Cox, “Take My Time”

Canaan Cox has captured the hearts of fans everywhere through his honest lyrics and North Carolina country charm. Since moving to Nashville in 2016, he has put out a self-titled EP along with several single releases. Fans following Cox on Instagram, will quickly recognize his hustle and ‘do-it-yourself’ mentality. Working hard to promote his music, schedule shows, and connect with his fans all on his own. It is truly impressive the ground he has covered in the last two years.

Releasing his latest single “Take My Time”, Cox explains in a recent conversation how his unconventional approach to the song led him to the final outcome.

“This song actually happened to be the outcome of a ‘bad’ write,” he explains, “We went in to write something and none of us were feeling it. I simply said ‘let’s just go way left field and write a pop song’.”

Cox chalked the day up to be just another write under his belt, thinking the pop song they had written was simply a good way to work on their songwriting skills and explore their creativity. It was not until he heard the finished song from a demo they received back that Cox realized it was something he actually really did want to put out for his fans to hear.

His one dilemma? It wasn’t a “country song”. Cox went on to explain, “Even though country nowadays has it’s pop flair, as an indie/country artist I didn’t want to throw a crazy curveball at my fans and say ‘listen to this pop song’ and them be like… ‘ugh, Canaan, what is this?'”

Instead, Cox took the opportunity to create a truly unique project by releasing two versions of the song with two completely different music videos to go along. For the pop friendly version, he found Daisha McBride, a fellow independent artist on Twitter, who has killer tunes and the great attitude that he was looking for. She brings unique vocals to the track and truly ties it all together. After that, Cox quickly sent some ideas to production for a country version and things began to fall into place.

Cox claims that he is excited to see the reaction his fans have to his newest single because of the different avenue he took.

“Take My Time” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

Jessie James Decker Surprises Fans with New Single “Boots”

Jessie James Decker, Boots

Jessie James Decker, Boots

After taking some time away from country music to concentrate on her clothing line, hair care line and book, along with taking care of her new baby boy, Jessie James Decker surprised fans with a brand new single, “Boots.”

Earlier this week, Decker subtly teased fans by posting a seven second clip to instagram of her shoot with JustFab for their upcoming collaborative clothing line, captioned, “JJD x @justfabonline …. get ready (ps yes this is a new song. Out soon)” Just hours before the song’s release, Decker officially announced “Boots” by posting a thirty second clip of the single with it’s cover art and caption, “Tonight. new music droppin #boots (this is my new song it’s featured in my new @justfabonline commercial!!!)”

Co-written by Tofer Brown, “Boots” is an upbeat, fun and sassy anthem version of the idiom “walk a mile in their shoes.” Before judging someone, you must understand their experiences, challenges, thought processes, etc. Decker put her own womanly, country twist on it and sings in the chorus:

“Come on, tonight /  I’m daring you to walk a mile in my boots / Bring it on, just try / I bet you couldn’t even strap ‘em up on right / You got your little friends / I hear ‘em talkin’ / But talking ain’t the same as walking a mile in my boots so come on”

In addition to the single, Decker wrote a new book titled “Just Jessie”, due out on October 2nd. It is a self-written guide to love, life, family and food. To celebrate the book’s release, the singer-songwriter will be going on a four-city book signing tour which will stop in Brooklyn at The BookMark Shoppe on October 3rd at 7pm. You can pre-order the book here.

“Boots” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.

Kane Brown, Experiment

Kane Brown, Experiment

Kane Brown has been teasing fans with audio clips and fun videos of tracks off his highly anticipated sophomore album, Experiment via his social media channels for months now. Last week, the hitmaker released, Homesick. Today, he dropped another new track, “Short Skirt Weather,” and it’s sure to get fans even more excited for the forthcoming album.

The song is a fun, upbeat, and cheeky track with tons of the entertainer’s personality mixed in. Although the singer loves to push boundaries, introducing different genres into his music, this song is definitely a country anthem. The infectious melody makes it hard to not want to dance and sing along to the lyrics.

“All those girls are jealous cause they know all the fellas are watching her put on a show / Every time they see her – they all just want to be her / Making country boys’ hearts explode / Oh my baby’s made for short skirt weather / Yeah she makes me wish Summer would just go on forever / From them yellow polka dots, blue jeans and leather / Oh my baby’s made for short skirt weather.”

The lyrics, co-written by the singer, tell the story of a boy smitten by a confident girl in her Summer attire, mini skirts. Primed for Summer tailgates and beach days, the track will definitely remind listeners of sunshine and fun times regardless of the season.  “Short Skirt Weather” is available everywhere you can buy or stream music.

So far, each of the songs released off Experiment have explored a different side of the singer-songwriter’s personality and musical ability, clearly showing how he is evolving as an artist. The record is slated to be released across all platforms on November 9th. Check back then for our ‘First Impression Review’ of the album.

Pistol Annies Make Triumphant Return to Country Music

Pistol Annies - Interstate Gospel

Pistol Annies, Interstate Gospel

Country music’s all-girl supergroup, Pistol Annies, have announced the release of their third studio album, Interstate Gospel. Due out on November 2nd, the album will consist of fourteen brand new songs co-written by all three members. The trio released the title-track along with two of the fourteen songs, in honor of the album announcement and pre-order: “Interstate Gospel,” “Best Years of My Life” and “Got My Name Changed Back.”

The supergroup is composed of country superstar Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. The band made their debut performance in April of 2011, on the CBS special Academy of Country Music’s Girls’ Night Out: Superstar Women of Country.

The platinum-selling group began to tease their return to country music by mailing postcards directly to their fans, each with different song titles from Interstate Gospel. They also took to the band’s twitter, posting a photo of the postcards with the caption: “Thursday. We’ve got news. Stay tuned… PS: we just gotta say..y’all are smart. And if you haven’t taken a look back through the hashtag #PistolAnniesAreBack, you should.”

Last Wednesday night, Lambert reunited the trio as apart of her two-night artist-in-residence performance at the CMA Theater in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Rather than performing her solo work, she and the group only performed Pistol Annies songs, including the three new tracks as well as some old material from Hell On Heels and Annie Up.

Lambert was the Country Music Hall of Fame’s fifteenth artist-in-residence. The museum’s artist-in-residence program honors musical artists who can be credited with contributing a large and significant body of work to the canon of American popular music and is invited to use the museum’s performance venues to create unique musical experiences.

Pistol Annies had one more surprise in store for their dedicated fans this morning. Not one, but three intimate concert events. The group will play at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on October 25th then will follow with a show at Town Hall in New York City on November 2nd and conclude the round of shows at Novo in Los Angeles on November 7th.

Pre-sale tickets for these shows will go on sale Tuesday, October 2nd through the band’s fan club while general sale will begin on Friday, October 5th.

Interstate Gospel is available for pre-order now with the immediate download of three tracks. Visit pistolannies.com and follow Pistol Annies on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for updates.

Tenille Townes Releases Emotional “Somebody’s Daughter” Music Video

Country music newcomer, Tenille Townes continues to shine a light on important societal issues through her music. We first introduced you to Townes back in April, when we reviewed her Living Room Worktapes EP, and again, in May, as a NYCS Swag Spotlight artist.

The Sony Music/Columbia Nashville recording artist hones her songwriting skills and expresses her vulnerability and honesty through each of the four songs. The newly released music video for her beautiful song, and one of NYCountry Swag’s August song picks, “Somebody’s Daughter,” continues to depict the powerful lyrics and the overall message of the track – recognizing homelessness  as an epidemic, but also empowering people to look at individuals, who are homeless as human beings.

The music video showcases the singer-songwriter playing guitar, as she belts the lyrics; however, the visuals focus on a little girl and her father, joyfully playing with one another, and the little girl all grown up, struggling with being homeless.

Townes captioned the video sharing, “This message is so important to me. My hope is for people to feel empowered to recognize those around us. We’ve all got a story and there’s a lot we can learn from a kid at a lemonade stand.”

One of the more powerful visuals comes at the end of the video, when the singer crosses paths with the homeless woman at a lemonade stand, run by a young male child. The visuals end with a commanding sentiment, “Everybody has a story.”

Check out the touching music video below.

Next up for the artist, who just wrapped up The Bandwagon Tour with Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town, is an overseas tour in October as part of the CMA Songwriters Series. Her full-length debut album is slated to be released in 2019.

Dolly Parton and Sia Join Forces on “Here I Am”

Dolly Parton and pop superstar, Sia, have joined forces for a remake of Parton’s 1971 track, “Here I Am.” While the song originally appeared on Coat of Many Colors, it is now being re-released as a slower duet as part of the Dumplin’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Although Parton and Sia seem like an unlikely pairing, the duo absolutely soar on the soulful rendition of the song. Whether you’re familiar with the original or not, this new power ballad is the perfect pick me up.

Dumplin’ is a musical-comedy that will center around Parton and her music, with the country superstar listed as executive producer on the soundtrack. Parton recorded six new songs for the project and will also remake several older tracks as collaborations. In addition to Sia, other artists featured on the soundtrack include Miranda Lambert, Alison Krauss, Miley Cyrus, Rhonda Vincent, and Elle King. Additionally, Parton will trade vocals with the stars of the film, Danielle Macdonald and Jennifer Aniston.

Listen to “Here I Am” below…

Dumplin’ is an adaptation of a book by Julie Murphy, telling the story of a plus-sized teenager (Macdonald) and her former beauty queen mom (Aninston). When the teenager enters a pageant in protest, transformation overtakes the pageant and the town.

In addition to lending her music to Dumplin’, Parton will also pair with Netflix for an eight-part series centered around her songs. The anthology, due out in 2019, will have eight episodes, with each being based on one of Parton’s songs. “As a songwriter, I have always enjoyed telling stories through my music,” Parton said in a statement. “We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations.”

Thomas Rhett Releases Deluxe Version of ‘Life Changes’

Thomas Rhett releases deluxe version of 'Life Changes'

Thomas Rhett, ‘Life Changes Deluxe Version’

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of his platinum-selling album Life Changes, country superstar Thomas Rhett, has released a deluxe version of the record. This time, with three brand new songs: “Country Gold,” “Cardboard Heart” and “When We’re 80.”

The digital version also includes two different remixes of “Leave Right Now” and the radio edit versions with updated lyrics of both  “Leave Right Now” and his latest number one single “Life Changes.” In a recent press release regarding “Life Changes”, Rhett said, “This was the song that inspired the name of the album, and is so special for me because it’s my family’s story. It’s amazing that so many people have also been able to connect it to their own stories.”

The singer-songwriter scored four number ones from this album, since it’s release on September 8th, 2017. Including the title track, along with “Craving You,” “Unforgettable” and “Marry Me”.

Co-written by Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure and Rhett Akins, the added song “Country Gold” on the new deluxe album is an upbeat anthem about Rhett partying down south with some friends.

“Ain’t no gate code, just hop that fence / Ain’t no dress code, baby, come on in / Just pour your worries on Sonic ice / And we gon’ get you feelin’ alright / Got that country gold comin’ out of your radio / A little more funk at the end of your gravel road / Ain’t tryin’ to brag, but we got it all figured out / That’s how we do it in the dirty south,” Rhett sings in the chorus.

The next addition, “Cardboard Heart,” co-penned by Jesse Frasure, Rhett Akins and Sean Douglas, is an up-tempo heartbreak song.

Sometimes I wish I had a cardboard heart / It wouldn’t hurt me when you tore it apart / And movin’ on wouldn’t be so dang hard / If I only, if I only had a cardboard heart / Fold it up, I could just fold it up and move on

The final new song, “When We’re 80,” co-composed by Jesse Frasure, John Osborne and Shane McAnally, is a TR-fashioned love song about his relationship when he and his wife, Lauren are 80-years-old.

Rhett sings, “Tell me it’ll always be this way / You’ll be even more beautiful when you’re gray and crazy / We’ll still kiss and we might cuss / Just tell me that we’ll still be us when we’re 80.”

Rhett is up for three 2018 CMA Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year and Music Video of the year for “Marry Me.” He also received two American Music Award nominations, including Favorite Male Artist – Country and Favorite Album – Country for Life Changes.

Life Changes (Deluxe Version) is now available everywhere you stream or buy music.

Jillian Jacqueline Releases Visually Stunning “Sad Girls” Video

Jillian Jacqueline Sad Girls Video

Big Loud Records’, Jillian Jacqueline, has released the visually stunning one-take music video for “Sad Girls”. The track is one of six songs from her latest EP, Side B. Co-written with Lori McKenna and Tofer Brown, the heartbreaking ballad uses metaphors to portray an agonizing, elongated relationship Jacqueline felt stuck in.

“When I wrote this song, the imagery I had pictured was definitely a rainy city street at midnight” Jacqueline revealed in an exclusive interview with The Fader. “When I came to my longtime collaborator and friend Patrick Tracy to direct this, we both gravitated towards the visuals of a soft romantic image we had seen of 1970s models in a field of flowers” she continued.

Beautiful and aesthetically pleasing, the video developed into exactly that. Styled in a gorgeous sundress, it begins with Jacqueline in a field of green grass and flowers, strumming along to her acoustic guitar. Once the chorus hits, the singer-songwriter is seen singing and walking along to the ballad.

“It’s the first time I’ve shot something quite so ethereal in nature and I think it fits the song beautifully,” shared Jacqueline.

Jacqueline was named as one of New York Country Swag’s 2018 Artists to Watch, before highlighting her story in our Swag Spotlight of the Week feature back in January. Currently, she is gearing up to support country superstar Kip Moore on his fall leg of the ‘After The Sunburn Tour’.
