Exclusive Video Premiere: Jennifer Smestad Debuts “Can’t Have Mine”

Jennifer Smestad released her brand new song, “Can’t Have Mine” today, March 26th, and we’ve got the exclusive premiere of the lyric video. Check it out below.

Our latest Swag Spotlight artist, Jennifer Smestad, is a brand new talent that is one to look out for. The songstress is an incredible vocalist and even more impactful songwriter and storyteller. After her debut single “Half The Man” went viral, Smestad had big shoes to fill with a follow-up track. Rising to the occasion, today, the RECORDS Nashville artist and songwriter is debuting a powerful new single, “Can’t Have Mine”. Check out the exclusive premiere of the lyric visualizer in the video above.

“Can’t Have Mine” is a song that was intended to be about heartbreak, but what unveiled itself was an anthem for women everywhere. The lyrics convey the message that sometimes you have to walk away from a man who is not worth your time. If you’re ready for something serious and your partner’s desires are not lining up with yours, sometimes it is time to make a difficult decision.

“This is the third night in a row // I’ve stayed up way too late // Hoping this time it’s different // Some things just don’t change // What if I leave // What If I don’t // What if you see when I’m already gone // What if I’m all over your mind // and you let me walk away”

Dazzling in a white sweater and a coral skirt, Smestad meanders in a field as she sings this tune. The vibe of the video matched with the lyrics gives life to the already captivating song. Despite the melancholy nature of the track, the lyric, “You took your time // now you can’t have mine” showcases the hope and control women have over their lives. In this moment, Smestad took back her power, remembered who she was, and gave women everywhere the encouragement they need to live in their truth.

Exclusive Premiere: Lauren Davidson’s Cozy Christmas Song “We’re Just Warming Up”

Premiering exclusively on New York Country Swag today and available everywhere tomorrow, our Swag Spotlight Lauren Davidson is releasing a toasty, original Christmas song. Referencing the classics like “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and “Jingle Bells” and Santa checking his list twice, the creative tune helps the listener to see the perfect image of a couple cozying up to keep warm during the cold, wintery, holiday season.

“Break out the mistletoe, we ain’t got no place to go, cause baby it’s cold outside / stay in our pajamas, I’ll pour some wine and then we’ll play Sinatra’s Christmas 45 / If Santa would slip down that chimney, I bet we could make that big boy blush / but you and me, we ain’t in no rush, we’re just warming up”

Lauren Davidson

Davidson wrote the track with another one of the local New York City artists and fellow Swag Spotlights, Tommy Cole.  We caught the two perform the classic holiday duet “Baby It’s Cold Outside” last year in New Jersey at The Country Christmas Showdown. Davidson shares “Tommy and I had such a blast last Christmas covering “Baby Its Cold Outside” and his love for the holiday was so contagious I just knew we had to write a Christmas song together.  I love writing with Tommy and we had written a few songs together already when I approached him about wanting to write a holiday tune.  He threw this idea out, the title- “We’re Just Warming Up” and we started brainstorming ideas and next thing I knew the song was finished.  I love that this song is the first release of the songs we’ve written together over this past year- it feels full circle for me.”

To hear more from Davidson check out her latest EP Ballads, and listen to the holiday track below and stream/buy it everywhere music is available tomorrow.

NYCS Exclusive Video Premiere: Brett Sheroky “Better On Paper”

Nashville singer-songwriter, Brett Sheroky is premiering a video for his latest single “Better On Paper” exclusively with NYCountry Swag today.  The lyrics are honest and raw, outlining a relationship that’s falling apart and the emotions one feels during that tragic time.

The video which is entirely in black and white is simple, no frills but allows for an uncomplicated listen to the lyric.  Sheroky sits at a table, fumbling through a box of old keepsakes and reminiscing on when things were not as difficult. With each item he tosses into the garbage, a memory goes with them, as his left hand is prominently featured, still wearing his wedding band.  Ultimately and reluctantly he signs the divorce papers, struggling with every pen stroke and leaves his wedding band on top.  “Better On Paper” is also one of our September Picks: “What We are Listening To”.

The song and video are certainly not for tailgating at a concert, but something about the truth in the lyrics and the storytelling is what country music is based upon.  Watch the video for “Better On Paper”  below and follow Brett Sheroky on social media, on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

NYCountry Swag Exclusive Premiere: Brian James Schram “Summer Life”

Exclusively premiering on New York Country Swag today is Brian James Schram’s latest video for his single “Summer Life”.  After touring as Uncle Kracker’s lead guitar player, Schram has had the opportunity to cut his teeth playing shows with some of the biggest country acts including Kenny Chesney, Colt Ford, Dustin Lynch, and Parmalee. Growing up listening to the classic country stars such as Dolly Parton, George Jones, and Hank Williams, Schram is pursuing his musical career but bringing a modern twist with his music.

His next single “Summer Life” gives all of those sunny vibes and the video (above) will make viewers feel like it is summer all year round.  “I tried to not overthink the lyrics and just keep it a straightforward, high-energy summer anthem. The video was so much fun because we filmed half in Carlsbad, New Mexico and the other half on Lake St Clair in Michigan (where I’m from). It was as real as it gets!!” Schram says about the song.  Between the bikini-clad girls, red solo cups, and speedboats cruising across the lake, the video that accompanies the song perfectly sums up what a “summer life” is all about.

Be sure to follow Brian James Schram on his social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram,  and Twitter) for announcements and head to his website for tour dates.
