Carly Pearce Releases Emotional Song “It Won’t Always Be Like This”

Carly Pearce It Won't Always Be Like This

Carly Pearce is one of country music’s brightest up-and-comers, and last month she announced that her self-titled sophomore album is to be released February 14th on Valentine’s Day. It’s fitting – in the past year, she’s experienced different forms of love and heartbreak, making for what will probably be a phenomenal album. If it’s anything like the newly released “It Won’t Always Be Like This”, fans are in for a treat.

Pearce co-wrote the song with Highwomen member Natalie Hemby and Sam Ellis, and the song was produced by the late-great busbee. “This song is my story in a nutshell. From reminiscing to times in Kentucky with my sweet papaw, to the struggles of moving to Nashville to finding love,” Pearce told fans in an email blast, “I hope you can insert your own story into this song and realize we have to soak in every moment of our life.”

The production is understated in a beautiful way. It lets Pearce’s emotional storytelling voice and lyrics shine throughout the song, leading the way for every emotion and part of her life she retells. The chorus, melodically, is reminiscent of fan-favorite “If My Name Was Whiskey”, a heartbreaking track from her debut record.

The chorus’ lyrics change ever-so-slightly each time. “It won’t always be like this / It won’t always be like this / I know nothing lasts forever / But sometimes I still forget / It won’t always be like this,” she sings on the first chorus, in reference to her late grandfather who she said goodbye to. The second verse is all about how doors slammed in her face when she first came to Nashville. “It won’t always be like this / It won’t always be like this / No, the heart won’t ache forever / No matter how hard it gets / It won’t always be like this,” she sings on the second chorus. The third verse takes place in the present. She describes the feeling of meeting her husband, Michael, and wishing their love could last forever. “No, it won’t always be like this / I know it won’t always be like this / I wish love would last forever / So I could live it all again / It won’t always be like this / It won’t always be like this,” she sings on the last chorus, ending on an incredibly thoughtful note.

It’s definitely bittersweet knowing that busbee, Pearce’s longtime producer and friend who passed away earlier this year, had a hand in this song. The sentiment couldn’t ring more true to his story. It’s easy to take something for granted and it’s just as easy for it to all go away the next day. The song is touching in its relatability. This song is Pearce’s story, but truthfully, it’s everyone’s story.
