Brand Clark Releases “Who You Thought I Was” & New Album Details

Brandy Clark

This past week Brandy Clark freed the secrets of Your Life Is A Record, her third studio album release since Big Day in a Small Town’s release in 2016. The Jay Joyce produced, 11-song listing will drop March 6th via Warner Records.

“Who You Thought I Was” is the first taste off Your Life Is A Record. This conventional, mid-tempo divertimento was ignited after the six-time Grammy nominee witnessed the Americana Awards at the Ryman a few years prior. John Prine arose and spoke, “I’m John Prine, but I’d like to go back to being who you thought I was.”

“Man . . . that hit me,” the country singer + songwriter told Nash Country Daily, “The songwriter in me instantly knew it was a song and the heart in me knew it was how I had felt in my own life many times. I mean who of us hasn’t let somebody down or wanted to be the version of ourselves that someone who loved us thought we were.”

Co-written by Jessie Jo Dillon and Jonathan Singleton, echos the end of a relationship while reflecting back on early childhood ideologies. She sings: “I used to wanna be a cowboy / I used to wanna be Elvis / Drive a pink Cadillac car / That’s why I learned to play the guitar / I used to wanna be Elvis / There’s a lot of things I used to wanna do / ‘Til I met you / Now I wanna be honest / Now I wanna be better / Now I wanna be the me I should’ve been when we were together / I wanna be at least almost close to worth your love / I wanna be who you thought I was”

This winter Clark is joining Tanya Tucker for select dates of the CMT’s Next Women of Country Tour. See the dates here.
