Following the success of “Hell Is a Dance Floor” and his Just Can’t Be Me EP, Vincent Mason arrives with There I Go, his debut full-length, out now. Equal parts autobiography and ambition, the collection features 14 new tracks, 13 of which he co-wrote.
Enlisting collaborators like Jessie Jo Dillon, Devin Dawson, Luke Laird, Ryan Beaver, and Erik Dylan, the Georgia native leans into a sharp blend of country sincerity, rootsy rock, and authentic storytelling. The album explores life on the road, relationships, and everything in between. “I was always a kid who liked to be very still,” recalls Mason. “My favorite question growing up was always ‘When can we go home?’ I’ve really been that way my whole life. Last year I put out a song called ‘Hell Is a Dance Floor’ and since then I haven’t really been home at all. The album There I Go is me learning how to live on the road.”
The record opens with its title track, a striking one-take performance that captures guitar, harmonica, and vocals in their most unfiltered form. It is immediately captivating in its autobiographical lyrics, introducing listeners to a Georgia native who is authentic, unpolished, and ready to shine.
He quickly moves into “Little Miss,” Mason’s personal favorite song on the album. The track glides between country swagger and a rootsy, John Mayer–influenced pop-rock pulse. With its addictive refrain of “Little miss never hurt nobody,” it is hook-driven and instantly memorable.
Heartbreak weaves its way through much of the album, including “Sink or Swim,” “Damned If I Do,” “Anything Took Everything,” and “She Loves Leaving.” Mason shines especially bright on “Sink or Swim” and “She Loves Leaving,” both of which allow him to juxtapose downtrodden lyrics with uptempo melodies.
“Damned If I Do” and “Anything Took Everything” find him exploring his moodier and darker musical sides, while “Old Flame” deals with the ache that comes with an on-again, off-again relationship.
The one-two punch of “Painkiller” and “American Spirit” provides a particularly special moment, with lush, laid-back tunes tinted with the influence of the Eagles and Tom Petty. On these Americana-meets-Laurel Canyon anthems, Mason proves he can flex both as a singer and a storyteller.
Likewise, “Hell Is a Dance Floor” and “Wish You Well” stand out as arguably the album’s most radio-ready tracks. While “Hell” has already catapulted Mason into stardom, “Wish You Well” is a natural follow-up, showcasing a more mature perspective as he moves on from a failed relationship without bitterness.
“But I wish you would call // Wish you would miss me // Wish you and me we were more than a memory // Wish you were here, wish you were mine // Wish you were second chance lonely tonight // Thing is my heart hit rock bottom shelf // When we didn’t last like a last call bell // Can’t bring myself to too much else // But sit on this bar stool sippin’ that wish you well”
“Days Are Numbered” serves as another standout, as Mason cleverly uses numbers to tell the story of life on the road. “‘Days Are Numbered’ captures the two sides of the album and the tension that lies in between,” he explains. “There’s the kid in me that wants to stay home, and the side of me that can’t get enough of being out on the road playing shows. I thank God every day that I have the life that I do, and I wouldn’t trade it. There I Go is the through line that captures all the moments of my life since it changed last year.”
Finally, the album ends on a special note with the work-tape version of “Good Run,” a raw and unfinished track written and recorded on the go. Rather than ending with a polished studio moment, There I Go closes with a reminder of the intimacy and honesty that define Mason’s artistry, his debut album, and even music as a whole.
