James Barker Band: ‘Ahead Of Our Time’ – Debut EP Review

James Barker Band makes their major-label debut with their new EP, Ahead Of Our Time, out now, October 20th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new music below.

After years of making a name for themselves across Canada, James Barker Band is about to make their U.S. debut. In partnership with RECORDS Nashville, the quartet released their EP, Ahead Of Our Time, out now. Featuring six new tracks, five of which were co-written by Barker, the EP is the perfect way to introduce themselves to a whole new audience.

Comprised of James Barker (lead vocals/guitar), Taylor Abram (guitar/background vocals), Connor Stephen (drums), and Bobby Martin (bass), the foursome combine their Canadian roots with witty lyricism and pop-country sensibilities, as evidenced on tracks like the EP opener “Step On His Boots” and the tongue-in-cheek ode to moving on after a breakup, “Champagne.”

The EP’s title track is an immediate standout, a stirring and building ballad that swells over lyrics about a couple that met before they were ready for each other. It’s a quintessential what-could’ve-been ballad that everyone can relate to, and it offers a poignant moment of both reflection and introspection.

“Too young, too fast, too wild and free // To pay attention to the what if it was meant to be // A taste of heaven was a hell of a ride // I’d be lyin’ if I didn’t say // I Get to wonderin’ if you’re wonderin’ what could have been // If we’d have finished what we started on way back when // If we’d have met now, would it have been right // Maybe we were just ahead, ahead of our time // Ahead of our time”

Meanwhile, “Meet Your Mama” finds Barker wondering if it’s too soon to see where a special girl grew up, admitting that he knows it’s been only six months, but he’s ready to see her hometown and where she’s been all his life. Likewise, “Step On His Boots” has him ready to be Mr.-Steal-Your-Girl, musing, “I don’t see no ring weighing down your left hand.”

The album’s lone party song is the only one not co-written by Barker: “On the Water.” Featuring Dalton Dover, the lighter track finds the quartet desperate to escape the 9-5 grind in favor of some salt life in the sun. “I need a day on the water,” They sing. “‘fore I up and lose my mind.” Meanwhile, “Champagne” finds Barker moving on “with a ten in a Tennessee T-shirt” and “sippin’ whiskey like it’s champagne.”

The EP ends with “Heartbeat,” a true country ode to love at first sight, laden with slide guitars over a catchy and airy melody. It’s the epitome of “when you know, you know,” as the band proclaims an instant connection, declaring “You had me in a heartbeat.”

On Ahead Of Our Time, James Barker Band shows why they’ve become megastars in Canada and serves as a perfect introduction to new fans everywhere.

Who Is James Barker Band? The Story Behind Their Journey to Country Music

Who is James Barker Band? The lead singer-songwriter of James Barker Band joined us to chat about their journey to country music. Get to know the rising act here…

who-is-james-barker-band

Quick Facts:

Full Name – James Barker Band

Hometown – Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Musical Influences – Eric Church, Maroon 5, The Strokes, Keith Urban

The Beginning:

Today, we are shining our spotlight on a band we have been loving for the last few years, James Barker Band. The Canadian country band continues to grow their fanbase year after year. If you do not have them on your radar, what are you waiting for? We chatted with lead singer-songwriter, James Barker about his career and the trajectory of his namesake group.

James Barker Band is comprised of four talented men – James Barker, Taylor Abram, Connor Stephen, and Bobby Martin. The men are all from different parts of Canada, near Toronto; however, met each other later in life. Barker grew up in Woodville, Ontario, focusing on music right from the get-go.

“I started kind of playing music when I was 4. I played violin actually, weirdly, classical stuff. I got into songwriting at 12, when I started learning guitar.” Barker’s family influenced him from day one. I listened to a lot of different stuff. My dad was from the country, so he always listened to country music, and we always had country music on. But my mom was raised in Toronto, so she listened to all kinds of stuff,” shared the singer.

While in high school, the singer focused on writing music. Then one summer, he met Conner, who would go on to be his first bandmate. “I met a fellow by the name of Conner Stephen at a band camp actually,” began Barker. “We were fans of the same kind of music at the same, angsty teenage stuff, and we started a little band.”

Eventually, after Stephen came back from college, the pair recruited their other two members. “We had done recording with Taylor Abram at a studio and thought we should steal him. And we played with Bobby [Martin] in a couple of different bands, and we stole him too.”

The Turning Point:

James Barker Band was officially formed in 2015. “Music draws like-minded people together. It’s such a country music thing, I mean you see it in Nashville every day,” shared Barker. “If you love music, and do it every day, you’re bound to run into people with the same mindset.”

Despite coming back and forth to Nashville, since 2011, the entire band made the move in 2018 to Music City, bringing their eclectic sound to center stage. “We are always blending [genres] in a cool way,” began Barker. “Especially because it is the four of us, and we all have different musical tastes – you definitely hear stuff that is band-related, especially that all rock kind of thing.”

The band names artists like Keith Urban, Eric Church, Maroon 5, and the Arctic Monkeys as some of their top influences. Barker even shared that the band loves incorporating soul, hip-hop, and R&B into their music as well. “One thing we have never done is say ‘we have to make this sound country,’ we’re always like this just has to sound like us, but because we love country music first and foremost, it’s going to come out like that.”

Fortunately, for JBB, the pandemic was a time for them to continue to hone their craft. The artists spent the time perfecting their sound and improving their songwriting ability. “When you have so much time to just concentrate on something, you just get better so much faster,” shared Barker. Adding,“You mature as an artist and you mature as a writer, and I feel like you definitely hear that in our music.”

Today:

Flash-forward to today, James Barker Band got to release one of their pandemic tunes. Most recently, the band dropped their new single, “Rain All Summer.” The sensual and nostalgic song is the perfect blend of soul and country. “With “Rain All Summer” you definitely hear our maturity and our gain in complexities,” shared Barker.

“The cool thing about writing any song, it’s like figuring out the vibe of the song and what the real emotions are before you dig into the lyrics.” With this song, the vibe was all about “giving you a reason not to leave this room.” The song was created to be this sexy and fantasy-like song without being too on the nose, or romantic.

“You can push the envelope a bit sonically and musically, but the lyrics always need to make sense and live like a freaking working-class person,” shared Barker.

Fans can anticipate more new music to come soon from James Barker Band. The lead singer let us know that they have a ton of new music ready to go. Fans can also look forward to more fun TikTok’s and social media escapades from the band, as well as, more live shows sooner rather than later.

James Barker Band Releases New Song “Rain All Summer”

James Barker Band drops brand new song, “Rain All Summer” out now, July 15th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new song below.

James Barker Band is a country act that country music and its fans need to pay attention to. The singers have quietly grown their fanbase over the last few years. Recently, they collaborated with superstar Dierks Bentley on a track, “New Old Trucks”. Today, they are releasing another brand new song called, “Rain All Summer.”

The new tune is not what you might expect at first. While summer songs are usually full of nostalgia, sunshine, perfect weather, and kicking back, James Barker Band gives u something new and refreshing. Leaning into the romance and sensuality of a summer rain, JBB paints a picture of their new track. “Rain All Summer” is about getting caught up in bed and locked inside during a rainstorm with your lover. The imperfect weather still brought a perfect day.

“Baby it can rain all summer // On the roof of this house, all night, all day // All over each other // Don’t waste one drop girl, drop them shades // Who cares if the sun ain’t shining, let it storm, let it pour I don’t mind // If it keeps you and me tangled up in these sheets we’re under // Baby, it can rain all summer”

James Barker Band knows how to craft a great country song. Their lyrics are enticing. “Rain All Summer” is just another example of that.

James Barker Band Collaborates with Dierks Bentley On “New Old Trucks”

James Barker Band collaborates with Dierks Bentley on “New Old Trucks” out today, October 8th, on all streaming platforms. Learn more about the brand new track below.

Back in May, Platinum-selling Canadian group, James Barker Band landed their deal with Sony Music Nashville/Villa 40. The foursome have become ones to look out for here in the American country music landscape. Clearly artists and fans alike have taken notice. Today, the group released a new song with Dierks Bentley called “New Old Trucks.”

The collaboration between the band and Bentley flows effortlessly. Their seamless transition from one voice to another is both enticing and alluring. “New Old Trucks” is a song that screams nostalgia. There is nothing like singing about a truck that has been with you through it all.

“Never gonna find a new one like this // ‘Cause’ they ain’t making new old trucks // Can’t fake the fade or the rocker panel rust // Dent from a fence post I didn’t see coming // Scratch on the hood from her Levi buttons // Daddy hadda pull the first 100K // I drove the rest, wouldn’t sell or trade // That amount of miles or memories for a 1000 bucks because they ain’t making new old trucks”

The jam is one of those songs we are all going to relate to because of our own experience with irreplaceable and sentimental items in our lives. The clever wordplay that JBB and Bentley weave throughout the song is another layer that makes it special. Congrats to them on a great collab!

James Barker Band Inks Deal with Sony/Villa 40 and Release New Song

Platinum-selling Canadian group, James Barker Band has inked a deal with Sony Music Nashville/Villa 40 and released a brand new song to celebrate, “Over All Over Again”. Available now, May 14th, on all streaming platforms, take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new song.

“Over All Over Again” is a song about two people that keep finding themselves back together, in one of those ‘never really over’ relationships. It always starts the same way, talking and flirting over drinks at their spot and one thing leads to the other like it always does to neither of their surprise, like they’re not over all over again. Then when the morning comes, they go back to being over all over again. The cycle comes and goes like clockwork and neither of the two seem to resist the inevitable each time they see it coming.

“Here we are again who would’ve guessed // In the same old bar, our friends they all left // when the beer switched to whiskey and we couldn’t stop // you leaned in to kiss me, it sure feels a lot // like dejavu, our old song comes on, baby right on queue // it sure don’t feel wrong, all caught up in this moment, don’t care how it ends // feels like we ain’t over all over again”

The track marks the first release with their Sony Music Nashville/Villa 40 team. Although the band, formed in 2015 by Taylor Abram, James Barker, Bobby Martin, and Connor Brock Stephen, have had previous success in Canada with their #1 and platinum-certified hits, “Chills” (2017) and “Keep It Simple” (2019), this new release establishes a brand new chapter for the foursome. As they consistently build their massive fanbase in Canada, James Barker Band introduces themselves in the U.S. with this new music that continues to reflect their unique sound and style. Many of their songs have given a very laid-back vibe paired with upbeat music and effortlessly flawless vocals. “Over All Over Again” is no different, although it speaks to a relatively more serious situation than the happy, upbeat, summer-vibe they’re used to. We look forward to hearing more from the group!
