Home Free Releases Video & Cover of Surfaces’ “Sunday Best”

Home Free Sunday best

All vocals country group, Home Free have made a career releasing a cappella music, comprised of both original tracks and cover songs. Their last record Dive Bar Saints was a hit with fans, and now the five men are back with a cover of  the popular song, “Sunday Best.”

Originally by a duo named Surfaces, the song is a feel-good anthem and a social media favorite. The song is all about bringing joy and positivity to our day. Hearing the guys of Home Free sing this version of the song brings even more joy and a sense of silliness to the already uplifting jam.

“Hey feeling good, like I should / Went and took a walk around the neighborhood /
Feeling blessed, never stressed / Got that sunshine on my Sunday best”

Their new music video for the track is clearly quarantine at its finest. It shows off the men being goofballs around their perspective houses. In a time where it’s difficult to keep in good spirits, Home Free gives us something to distract ourselves with. We appreciate their sense of humor, talent, and humbleness during these times.

NYCS First Impression: Home Free ‘Dive Bar Saints’

Home Free Dive Bar Saints

NYCountry Swag’s Spotlight alum Home Free’s fifth album Dive Bar Saints is officially here. The a capella group is back, after releasing their album Timeless in 2017. It was well worth the wait, as it is the first time the guys have put out almost all original music, the twelve track album has ten original tracks and two covers.

Dive Bar Saints is also special for the vocalists Austin Brown (high tenor), Rob Lundquist (tenor), Adam Rupp (vocal perfusion\beatboxer), Tim Foust (bass), and Adam Chance (baritone), as it is their first album on their record label, Home Free Records. The album is filled with a combination of upbeat and slower-paced songs that highlight the artists’ range and talent of creating music with just their voices. While the songs may have different tempos, they all go back to the same theme of honoring where you came from, living life to the fullest, and encouragement to follow your dreams.

The album starts with the song “Remember This” which was the perfect choice to set the tone for the record. While it has an upbeat tempo, “Remember This” shares an important message that everyone needs to hear, life is what you make it, don’t miss out on critical moments with the ones you love. With a lot of ‘wahoos’, the second track “Leave This Town” continues with the upbeat, laid back feel and is the perfect tribute to small towns everywhere, giving all the reasons why you shouldn’t leave it including the most important thing, the one you love.

The title track “Dive Bar Saints” follows with a similar theme honoring the hometown dive bar. With a more gospel feel, it tells the story how no matter what type of week you had, the dive bar will always welcome you, no questions asked. “Catch Me If You Can” starts slow but then has a catchy clapping beat, which will get the audience up and dancing at every show. The song reminds you not to feel stuck in one place or let anything hold you back from living the life you want to live.

“Lonely Girl’s World” is one of the more vulnerable songs on the album. It’s about a relationship going downhill and feeling alone but bouncing back to start the life and happiness you deserve. Heading back to upbeat “Cross That Bridge” is another catchy song that will have you bopping along and is the song that everyone in a new relationship needs to hear. You might be scared of what the future of your relationship holds but you can’t be afraid to jump in and see where it goes.

While no one wants to think about dying, “Dreamer” reminds everyone to think about when that moment comes, what you want to be remembered by. You want to be recognized by being your true self and doing what you love, not by something you regret. After listening to “What’s the World Coming To?”, you’ll want to do something to make the world a better place.

“Go Rest High On That Mountain” is the first of two covers on the album. An original by Vince Gill, Home Free puts their spin on the already emotional song by adding in a snippet of “Amazing Grace.” It will, for sure, give you chills. The artists bring up the mood with “Why Not” which follows the theme of the album of going after what you want. This time it’s going after the one you have romantic feelings for. “Love Me Like That” is next and is a song that honors your first love. It takes you down memory lane of the love that the two of you shared, and even though the relationship is over, you will always remember what the two of you had. The album closes out with a slow downed version of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” which was a part of their country medley this week on The Today Show, putting their spin on the John Denver classic. Slowing down the classic allows showcasing each singers’ incredible vocals.

Home Free has so many reasons to be proud of this album. It shows their powerhouse vocals and harmonizing talent. Dive Bar Saints also highlights the groups cowriting skills. If this is a sign of what is to come for their new label, it will for sure be successful. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

These guys are not slowing down anytime soon as they are hitting the road on September 18th for their DIVE BAR SAINTS WORLD TOUR. With over 100 shows in 16 countries, it’s a show you do not want to miss! They come to  The Town Hall in New York City on November 10th, get your tickets today.

Home Free Mash Up Country Medley on The Today Show

Home Free TOday Show

You may recognize the Home Free as an American a cappella group of five vocalists acapella group from a few years ago when they competed on the show “The Sing-Off” or from one of our Swag Spotlights last year. The band members include Austin Brown (high tenor), Adam Chance (baritone), Tim Foust (bass), Rob Lundquist (tenor) and Adam Rupp (vocal percussion/beatboxer). Since then the group has been touring the world and this morning in celebration of their album release week, Home Free took the stage at NBC’s Today with Hoda and Jenna to perform a medley of some of country music’s classic hits.

The cohosts introduced the group by chatting with the band asking “What do you want people, when they listen to your music, what do you hope they take from it” they responded. “Just happiness, just joy, just take a little break from life and enjoy some good music.”

The quintet started their performance with Florida Georgia Line’s breakout hit “Cruise” sailing smoothly into Tom Cochrane’s original made even more popular by Rascal Flatts, “Life Is A Highway”. They ended their upbeat a capella performance with John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. As they closed out the song, the invited all three hosts to join them in a sing-along.

After a packed album release week, the band is off on their massive DIVE BAR SAINTS WORLD TOUR is set to kick off on September 18, hitting 16 countries with over 100 shows through October 2020. No matter where you live, there will be a show near you so get your tickets today!

Home Free Releases “Man of Constant Sorrow” Music Video

A cappella country music group and of our recent Swag Spotlight Features, Home Free, have released the music video for their soulful cover of “Man of Constant Sorrow.” Originally performed by The Soggy Bottom Boys and Dan Tyminski for the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Home Free made this rendition true to their signature sound.

The quintet’s mutual love for O Brother, Where Art Thou? made every decision for this video quite simple. From the location to their wardrobe choices, Home Free paid homage to their favored film almost entirely.

Filmed at Oak Hollow Farm in Fairhope, AL, the group wanted to monumentalize the song’s
rich southern history. In a recent interview with Billboard, the band’s baritone Adam Chance shared, “We’ve taken this song all around the world this past year on tour. It was inspiring to be able to bring it back home to Alabama, and really dig deep into the heart of it for our video.”

The group’s tenor, Rob Lundquist added, “I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen O Brother, Where Art Thou? It definitely put this classic tune on the map for a lot of people, and we sure hope we’ve honored it!”

The video begins with shots of the farm’s nature views before panning to the five vocalists on a dirt road under a trail of trees. All throughout, visuals of each member posted at different locations of Oak Hollow exude the authentic southern vibe they were going for.

Featured on their 2017 album, Timeless, “Man of Constant Sorrow” is the last of the album cycle’s concept videos.

Home Free will wrap up their ‘Timeless World Tour’ early next month, right before they head out on their ‘A Country Christmas Tour’ which will begin on November 24th at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, NJ. Visit homefreemusic.com for a full list of dates and show information as well as future announcements and follow the guys on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for updates.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Home Free

Initially, the country music genre’s only all-vocal group Home Free was formed back in 2000 but were really thrust into the scene after participating and winning the 4th season of the singing competition, The Sing Off.  The group which is made up of five vocalists, Austin Brown, Adam Chance, Tim Foust, Rob Lundquist and Adam Rupp are our Swag Spotlight this week, as we focus on their unique brand and their beautiful harmonies.  Rob Lundquist spoke to NYCounry Swag about their tour, their sound and their niche corner of country music. “We have our own niche in this market for sure, nobody else is doing a cappella country, we get to be trailblazers in our own right, we figure out what we want to do and we can always try something else, it’s liberating,” he explains.

Although the majority of their music are covers with a twist on well-known country songs, they also dabble in writing, producing and creating their own original music. They have garnered over 215 million views on YouTube. “We try and put out two YouTube videos a month, we are not on the radio so that is our way to stay relevant and keep people engaged,” he tells us. “We were lucky enough to get with a pretty great management team, Works Entertainment and after the show is where we really started working, touring, making music videos and recording new singles all of the time and that’s really been why we’ve been able to hang around and keep growing.”

Most recently they covered Russell Dickerson’s “Yours”, and Lundquist told us that it was a no-brainer to cover that incredible love song.  As far as picking which songs to cover, he lets us know that it is a democratic process, each member must love the song in order for them to create an arrangement specific for them and their sound. They mainly think about what their fans will want to hear, what they think will reach new markets as well.  Their original song “Timeless” is a catchy tune with an amazing video, showing couples reenacting photos that were taken of them when they were much younger. Take a look at the touching video below.

Their Timeless Tour has hit over 30 cities over the country, including a sold-out stop at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium. The quintet will also perform at CMA Fest this year on the Riverfront Stage. Then continue the summer playing with The Oak Ridge Boys. “Tour has been great, we are all over the country.  People are coming out, we are playing some new markets that we haven’t played and it’s been really fun,” Lundquist tells us.

In a time in country music and music in general when the production and the instruments can sometimes overtake the lyrics of a song, Home Free has managed to push past needing that, creating their own brand using only the beautiful voices they were given.  For more information and tour dates head to www.homefreemusic.com
