Jon Pardi: Heartache Medication (Deluxe Version) Album Review

Jon Pardi’s Heartache Medication (Deluxe Version) is available now, October 2nd, and includes two brand new songs. Check out our review below as we dig a little deeper.

Jon Pardi Heartache Medication Deluxe New Album

Jon Pardi Heartache Medication (Deluxe Version)

Singer-songwriter and country traditionalist, Jon Pardi released the deluxe edition of his third studio album, Heartache Medication today (October 2nd). It contains the fourteen songs on the original, the reimagined “Ain’t Always the Cowboy,” and two brand new tracks, “Bar Downtown” and “Beer Light.”

Pardi released “Ain’t Always the Cowboy (Western Version)” on August 28th. The new adaptation of this ballad is noticeably slowed down in the beginning to better capture the heartbreak of this now lone cowboy. Now the track is a little more produced, but still includes fiddle, steel guitar and other elements of neotraditional country that Pardi brings to mainstream radio.

“Bar Downtown” is a catchy tune about a guy at bar dwelling on his past relationship. He is hopeful that his ex is doing the same thing he is doing now–waiting for the other to walk through the door–just at a different bar. The songwriting on this track is excellent, using a lot of repetition and different rhyme schemes any English teacher would appreciate.

In the second verse, Pardi sings “Are you acting like I’m acting just acting like it’s all alright? Are you going to different places just trying to find my face and wearing every crown? Or have you come to the conclusion that this ‘over-us’ solution just ain’t working out?”

This creativity is shown in the chorus as well: “Are you somewhere in a bar downtown, thinking about me, baby? Drinking about me, baby? / Am I heavy on your heart right now? Like you were all mine wishing we could rewind just a little?”

“Beer Light” is also about using a bar to get over a woman, but in a much gloomier tone. Whiskey is not the right alcohol for this kind of breakup because “her leaving burned enough.” However, the worst of it is behind him so the singer leans on light beer to fill-in the cracks of his broken heart.

“When I start thinking about the past nothing gets me past it like sitting right here sipping / Light beer needs an old beer light”

Heartache Medication did well on the charts upon its release last year on September 27th 2019, debuting at number two and number eleven on the Top Country Albums and Billboard 200 charts, respectively. It is up for Album of the Year at the 2020 CMA Awards and also received an ACM nomination, but lost to Luke Combs’ What You See Is What You Get. Its lead single and the title track, “Heartache Medication,” reached number one, making it Pardi’s third chart-topping hit.

Jon Pardi Celebrates His Album Release at Hammerstein Ballroom

Singer-songwriter, Jon Pardi celebrated the release of his third studio album, Heartache Medication with a show at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom in the heart of New York City on Friday night. The 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year brought along fellow California-native and good friend, Tyler Rich.

As the floor was filling in for Jon Pardi, Tyler Rich entertained the crowd with a mix of tracks from his 2015 EP Valerie, his 2019 self-titled EP, unreleased songs and a variety of covers. Rich expressed that he has been to this venue before to see some of his favorite artists but there was no cooler feeling than performing on stage. He sandwiched a cover of Halsey’s “Without Me” in between his songs “11:11” and “Adrenaline” to start the show before playing a snippet of a slow, new song he did not reveal the name of. He followed that with an upbeat track in “Turn It Up.”

Rich, from Yuba City, California grew up just 55 miles from Pardi’s hometown of Dixon. Ironically, Rich’s uncle coached Pardi’s high school football team. Rich told him that the first time they met at a bar in Nashville. “And since that moment, Jon took me in as one of his best friends in Nashville and just showed me the entire town. And you guys bought tickets to support his new album that just came out but you did not just buy tickets to see one of your favorite country singers, you bought tickets (to see) a good-ass person; he’s one of the nicest guys I ever met.”

Rich then performed an unreleased song he has played at his shows before called “God Made You For a Small Town” which transitioned into a cover of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude”. “Feels Like Home” came next, another unreleased track. He closed his set with his current single “Leave Her Wild” and his hit “The Difference”.

NYCountry Swag caught up with Tyler Rich just before he hit the stage at Hammerstein for a live swag session with the rising artist. Tune in below to catch his acoustic performance of “Leave Her Wild” and interview.

Jon Pardi came out on stage to a new song called “Oughta Know That”, the first of ten songs he performed Friday night off Heartache Medication. He ditched the guitar to sing “Night Shift” off his sophomore album California Sunrise. Pardi told us that he idolized traditional country artists growing up such as George Strait, Dwight Yoakam and Mark Chesnutt, who are never seen without their guitars. Just like his heroes, that was the last song of the night he performed without a guitar in his hands. “Up All Night” from his debut album, Write You a Song was next.

He then played two new songs in “Old Hat” and “Ain’t Always the Cowboy” then went back to older stuff in “Can’t Put Down” and “She Ain’t In It”. Pardi surprised the fans for his next song, “Tequila Little Time” when he brought out an entire mariachi band on stage to perform with him. The audience loved the twist.

Many people believe that country music and The Big Apple do not go together but ask any country artist and they’ll tell you New York has some of the best country fans out there. “They asked me, ‘why would I go to New York City for an album debut?’ Because New York City is awesome; they love country music!” He praised the crowd for the energy they were bringing so far.

After “What I’ve Been Drinking”, he played two more new songs in “Love Her Like She’s Leaving” and album’s lead single “Heartache Medication”. This made the fans rowdier than before. A couple of songs later, Pardi thanked them and country radio for making this next song, “Head Over Boots” number one and really giving him a voice in the industry.

“Me and Jack” is the story of his love/hate relationship with the whiskey. He displayed that story in cartoon form on the screen behind him as he performed the new tune. Another new one, “Tied One Up” was followed by his big hit “Heartache on the Dancefloor”. Pardi talked about how his grandparents were the ones who got him into country music. He dedicated his next song and the final track on the album, “Starlight”, to them. He ended his set with his boot-stomping number one single, “Dirt on My Boots”. Pardi introduced his band, took a bow then walked off stage, concluding the fun-filled, high-energy night, leaving the crowd of country music traditionalists very satisfied.

We’ve seen Pardi as a supporting act on tours with Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley in the past and if you thought he put on a good show then, you have to see him as a headliner. This Jon Pardi was even more animated on stage and even displayed a few dance moves that he’s kept hidden for us.

Pardi will continue the Heartache Medication Tour with special guest Riley Green starting with two sold-out shows at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Find out if he is coming to a city near you by heading to his website.

NYCS First Impression: Jon Pardi ‘Heartache Medication’

Heartache Medication Jon Pardi

Jon Pardi’s third studio album Heartache Medication is finally here, and there is a reason why it was named one of Billboard’s Most Anticipated Albums. Cowritten and coproduced by the California native, the album is filled with fun upbeat songs about drinking, a few ballads, a fiddle, and Pardi’s old school twang. It is everything we could have wanted and more.

In a recent press release the artist shared his excitement for the album, “I’m really proud of this record. I’m really proud of all the session players, and the songwriters that delivered great songs. I wrote half the record and Nashville stepped in and wrote the other half, and I’m very proud of that.”

The album starts with the song “Old Hat.” Different from the other songs on the album, this shows what kind of gentleman the singer-songwriter is. He questions what happened to the traditions of holding the door open for a girl. While interesting to start slow on the album, it does raise a powerful question of what happened to chivalry? The album picks up a little bit of speed with the title track “Heartache Medication”. While songs about heartache are typically sad, this is far from it as it begins with a fiddle. The first of many tracks about drinking, it’s a song about alcohol being the perfect medication to move on after a breakup.

“Nobody Leaves a Girl Like That” talks about the girl that you never want to leave as she hits every checkbox. If you do leave her and break her heart of gold, it will be a big mistake. One of the more somber songs on the album, “Ain’t Always the Cowboy” shows a more vulnerable side of the artist.  The track shares the message that isn’t always the guys’ fault who ends the relationship. Women can choose to go their separate way too.

We all have a love/hate relationship with alcohol, and for Pardi, it’s no different. “Me and Jack” will have everyone up on their feet, especially with the fiddle solos throughout the song. It’s a comical track as it talks about Pardi’s relationship with Jack Daniels. How it turns him into a different person, as it had caused him to miss work, fight, curse, forget what happened the night before, and even landing him in jail.

“Don’t Blame it on the Whiskey” features Pardi’s friend and fellow country artist, Lauren Alaina. Cowritten by stars Eric Church and Miranda Lambert, the ballad shares the message that you can’t blame the issues of your relationship on a drunken fight. People usually tell their honest thoughts when drunk, so you get down to the bottom of what really caused the argument and decide if you should be together or not. In our most recent chat with Pardi, he told us all about this duet.  “I knew me and Lauren sang great together, we hosted the ACM Honors together and we sang a lot,” he says of the decision to add a female voice. “She’s got a really soulful voice on this track, she can belt it, Lauren Alaina’s got some vocal pipes but it’s a little softer and it’s really pretty”.

Named after an old-fashioned western term, meaning to get drunk, “Tied One On” continues to show Pardi’s appreciation for old school country music and continuing with the drinking theme, “Oughta Know That” is relatable to anyone who has stayed out later than expected on a work or school night and drank more than they were planning on.

“Tequila Little Time” brings out the California in Pardi. It’ starts with the playing of trumpets and overall has a laid back vibe, sharing the message is it’s ok to forget the past, have fun, and get to know someone over a drink of tequila. “Buy That Man a Beer” shows appreciation is for every hardworking guy out there. “Call Me Country” is a song honoring all of Pardi’s country music heroes and how the genre isn’t the same as it once was. During our interview, he said ““It’s more there are a lot of influences where I grew up on listening to Brooks and Dunn, Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Mark Chestnutt, all kinds of sounds on there, that’s all blended together to where it’s me, it’s brand new sounding but it’s got a little remembrance of a different time.”

The album ends with the track “Starlight” which was the perfect choice. It’s a song honoring those who Pardi has lost in his life. While it’s sad that they are no longer with us, the artist knows that they are shining down on him and watching over him as his career continues to flourish. Overall, Heartache Medication shows how talented Pardi truly is as he mixes his love for old school country with the contemporary sound of today.

The album’s release party is right here in New York City at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom with special guest Tyler Rich. If you aren’t able to make it, Pardi will be heading out on the  Heartache Medication tour starting with two sold-out shows at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Jon Pardi Chats About His Upcoming Project & Album Release Show in NYC

Jon Pardi

Last week we spoke with Jon Pardi about all of the exciting things he has coming up including his third studio album, Heartache Medication, and his album release show that will take place at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. For a chance to win tickets to the show, + meet and greets, and a copy of the album, use the form below then head to Facebook for additional opportunities.

Pardi explains that he is currently on the road on his “rolling pirate ship”. As he gears up for his next project to be released, the songwriter/ artist tells us that this record is “a little more rootsy”.  He explains “It’s more there are a lot of influences where I grew up on listening to Brooks and Dunn, Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Mark Chestnutt, all kinds of sounds on there, that’s all blended together to where it’s me, it’s brand new sounding but it’s got a little remembrance of a different time.”

Pardi has released four songs so far from the upcoming project and along with the title track, each is cleverly written, giving traditional country fans and modern country fans alike something to fall in love with. By bringing back the classic country instruments like a fiddle, and steel guitar, the twang is palpable while the lyrics are relatable to the current day. One of the songs we are most excited about was written by Eric Church, Miranda Lambert along with Michael Heeney and Luke Laird and features Lauren Alaina. “Don’t Blame the Whiskey” was written around the same time as “Drink In My Hand”, and Pardi recalls hearing it years ago and always loving it.

Heartache Medication will be drop on Friday, September 27th and on that night, Pardi will celebrate by performing at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City with special guest, Tyler Rich.  “This is my time, I can not wait to release the album in New York City, I love the city, the fans are awesome, this record fits the fans,” Pardi says. “A lot of people ask why I’m doing the album release in NYC but all the fans want to do is have a good time, I feel like my music resembles a good time”.

He understands that the vibe in the Big Apple is something completely unique and the pride people have about living there is always evident. “I try to tell people when the rednecks question it, I tell people, Garth did it back in the ’90s and he had a million people at Central Park so, there is obviously a country crowd there.”

After his show at Hammerstein Ballroom, Pardi will set out on his Heartache Medication tour with two sold-out shows at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Although he loved his direct support position on Dierks Bentley’s ‘Burning Man Tour’ he looks forward to getting more up close and personal with fans on this intimate tour.

Jon Pardi Releases Next Track From New LP “Me and Jack”

Jon Pardi Me And Jack

“Me and Jack,” released last Friday (July 19th), has Jon Pardi conveying the troubles of a different kind of drinking song. Unlike Pardi’s usual persona of feel-good, dance songs, the deterioration of an inhumane love interest is addressed, leaving the Dixon, California native apologizing for placing faith in the friendship in the first place. This rowdy, turbulent, guitar-thumping track depicts Pardi’s chagrined relation with none other than Jack Daniels, to be specific. “Heartache on the Dance Floor” singer naively portrays the start of such friendship. He sings, “When I was just eighteen, I met the man in black / He said, ‘Jon it’s nice to meet you, my name is Jack / We hung out all the time, we became good friends / We ran around, we hit the town every damn weekend”

Pardi soon learned the hard way that the bad behavior derived from excess drinking rooted in this Johnny Cash inspired aria is not celebrated and cheered, but bemoaned. As dark as this subject can be, Capitol Nashville recording artist still humorizes while honoring his commitment to the steel guitar, and traditional country homage. He notes this friendship got him dumped, fired and even a spot in jail. Pardi jokes that upon his release from jail, he will return to the liquor store to buy an off-brand bottle of whiskey.

“Me and Jack don’t get along no more / He’s high up on the shelf while I’m lyin’ on the floor / He makes me do things I’ve never done before // He makes me cuss, he makes me fight / Don’t know what I did last night / Should’ve left his ass at the liquor store / Naw, me and Jack don’t get along no more”

The ACM/CMA nominated recording artist co-wrote “Me and Jack” with Rhett Atkins, Luke Laird and Bart Butler. It’s the latest single following “Ain’t Always The Cowboy” off of Pardi’s highly anticipated album Heartbreak Medication out on September 27th. Following the release of Heartbreak Medication, Pardi will embark on a fall tour kicking off at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
