Here Is Donovan Woods’ New EP ‘Squander Your Gifts’

Donovan Woods’ brand new EP, Squander Your Gifts is out now, February 27th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new project here.

Donovan Woods is a special type artist, who transcends genre and truly pulls at your heartstrings. The singer-songwriter creates music that speaks to who is as a person, the experiences he’s been through, and everything in between. Today, he releases his brand new EP, Squander Your Gifts featuring five prolific songs that all rival any artist in the industry right now.

“I went through a period of only being able to write about him. It lasted about a year and I wondered if it would ever end. Eventually, I felt that I owed it to Abe to dedicate a collection of songs to him and that’s what this is,” shared Woods in a recent press release. The record as a whole is a dedication to his late friend, Abe Stoklasa, who died too young. “He liked my writing and that emboldened me to believe that my point-of-view had value, that my stubborn, maybe even boring devotion to plainspoken lyric would eventually matter. Abe was a gifted melodist whose ideas arrived from a musical palette I had no access to. His voice was wonderful: wise, easy to hear and easy to love. He sounded like he was 58 years old at 24. In a way, he was. Abe was incredibly kind and thoughtful to those he loved, whip smart and hilarious, as principled as anyone I’ve ever known. He cooked me the best steak I’ve ever eaten. He was brilliant. He was irritating as hell. I loved him and I miss him terribly.”

In just five songs, Woods made sure to honor his friend and also release some of his best music to date. Make sure to listen to Squander Your Gifts EP. We’re sure you’ll become a fan after you do.

Donovan Woods Shares New Rendition of “Portland, Maine” Featuring Jordan Davis

Donovan Woods adds Jordan Davis to newest rendition of his song, “Portland, Maine,” out now, November 19th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the track below.

Donovan Woods continues o be one of the most respected artists amongst his songwriting peers. It’s been ten years since he released his highly-regarded single, “Portland, Maine.” In celebration, Woods is infusing new life into the song. Last month, he shared an incredible duet with LeAnn Rimes, and today, he is bringing an acoustic-country flavor to the track with the help of incredible country artist, Jordan Davis.

According to Woods, it was a no brainer to ask Davis to jump on the reimagined song with him. “Jordan arrived in Nashville and basically wrote the lights out. I remember hearing about him at first from other writers. He deservedly found success quickly. We got to meet eventually and expressed mutual admiration, I was flattered he’d heard of me. We wrote a song I’m still very proud of called “Another Right Now” that Logan Mize recorded. When I thought about whose voice I wanted on an acoustic version of “Portland, Maine,” he was my first thought. I texted him to ask.”

“Ain’t gonna worry where ya are, who you’re with // Let’s just agree this is it // Portland, Maine // I don’t know where that is // Leave your bags in the car, keep it running // I won’t pretend // That I won’t miss this // But Portland, Maine // I don’t know where that is // And I don’t wanna know // I don’t wanna know // See, I’m just saving us some trouble somewhere down the line // This kind of town you just leave behind // Since you don’t know yet, but you won’t come back  // And I ain’t going nowhere, you know that // Portland, Maine // I don’t know where that is // Leave your bags in the car, keep it running”

While Woods was hopeful that Davis would jump on the track with him, he considered it to be shooting for the stars, but to his surprise, Davis immediately said yes. Both artists’ voices worked so well together on the new version of, “Portland, Maine.” It’s truly a stunning song, whether you are hearing it for the first time or the millionth. Definitely give it a listen!

These things are sensitive in show business, he’s very busy and famous, I just wanted to ask and then I’d move on to more realistic options. He texted back immediately and said ‘yes,’ and I’m so grateful. His voice embodies the character of the song much better than mine. Honestly, I wish he just sang the whole thing.”

Donovan Woods and Ruston Kelly Perform in New York City

Bowery Ballroom, a downtown venue in New York City was the quintessential spot for artists like Donovan Woods and Ruston Kelly on the Brightly Burst Tour. The dark spacious room gives you that vibe you can only get in New York City, where the list of all of the recesses with interesting events happen is never-ending. Early on the venue was filled with the excitement and energy that already enveloped the place. These attendees may not be your typical country fan crowd, but definitely repeat listeners to the artists playing tonight.

Donovan Woods / Ruston Kelly

Donovan Woods came out right away with his dry sense of humor, telling the crowd to go ahead and start drafting that text to their exes, and talking about how his fans are “Caucasian fellows with their beers up singing”. He opened with one of our personal favorites, “It’ll Work Itself Out” which is how I discovered him. The crowd was eerily silent. You couldn’t help but be mesmerized by his voice and this song. It touches you so deeply, and simply puts you at ease.  He charmed the crowd with his sense of humor saying, “Well, we’re gonna do the second song now,” in the most sarcastic way. This Canadian knows how to work a crowd with his music and with his banter. It was so interesting how his songs are so emotional, and then as soon as that’s over, he would come straight at you with the humor. “Our Friend Bobby” was next, combining the story of two of his friends into one person, saying his friends are the type of people who get arrested for stealing things from construction sites. “Another Way” was next, in which he told the story of watching people set up a wedding in Michigan, followed by the ever-popular “Portland, Maine” which was cut by Tim McGraw.  Something about this song just has the coolest notes and is so soothing; you can feel the wrought emotion, and the steel guitar just completes the track perfectly.

Ruston Kelly took the stage next and picked up the energy a bit with “Cover My Tracks”, that has a bit more indie-rock sound. He talks about writing that in rehab, and, “looking out and seeing so many sing that with me is one of the most surreal and special things ever.” His harmonica just sets the whole mood perfectly and is the ideal complement to his tunes. “Mockingbird” and “Jericho” were two of our favorites of his set.

The Brightly Burst Tour heads to Virginia, Ohio, and Illinois this week. For tickets and more information head to https://www.rustonkelly.com/

Donovan Woods & Tenille Townes Collaborate on “I Ain’t Ever Loved No One”

Today, the talented Canadian singer-songwriters Donovan Woods and one of our 2019 Artists to Watch,  Tenille Townes released the animated acoustic video for their collaboration “I Ain’t Ever Loved No One.”

“I Ain’t Ever Loved No One” is off of Woods’ most recent album The Other Way and which was produced by Todd Lombardo who has notably worked with Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift, and Niall Horan. Rolling Stone praised Woods saying, “He’s got a knack for slice-of-life storytelling that blends heartache and hooks.” Together with Townes, their voices tell a remarkable story of feeling a love they’ve never felt before.

In the video, a brown backdrop sets the stage for pink flower petals that fall gently onto a hand and sets the tone for the ballad that undoubtedly hits your heart. The fallen rose petals landing on a hand and blooming into another flower is a beautiful metaphor of a love that evolves and prospers. Their raw, crisp voices blend together flawlessly for the chorus as they sing deep, honest lyrics, “And you set the bar for this stubborn heart /And when you met my family, everybody knew that you had me wrapped/I ain’t ever loved no one like that /And when I said I loved ya, I didn’t care if you said it back/I ain’t ever loved no one like that.” As the song nears the end, a silhouette of a man and a woman come together with flower petals continuing to fall as Woods and Townes sing “And maybe I’ll love again, then again, maybe I won’t / Maybe you feel the same, maybe you don’t / How would I know?”  Their incredible voices on this duet will make every hopeless romantic’s heart melt.

Woods will be joining Ruston Kelly on his Brightly Burst tour this fall and is making a stop here in New York City on October 24th at The Bowery Ballroom. Townes will be performing at CMA Fest next week at the Chevy Breakout Stage, and is continuing her summer run on Dierks Bentley’s “Burning Man Tour.”

“I Ain’t Ever Loved No One” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.
