Diplo Releases Deluxe Album Featuring “Bottle’s Bout Dead” with ERNEST

With the release of Diplo’s deluxe version of his album Snake Oil on Friday, December 18th, came his new song with ERNEST, “Bottle’s Bout Dead”.

While the original album, released in May, was Diplo’s debut country album, it was largely a crossover project. Diplo worked with artists from various musical genres and backgrounds including Thomas Rhett, Young Thug, Morgan Wallen, Cam, Blanco Brown, Zac Brown, Danielle Bradberry, Noah Cyrus, Julia Michaels, and Jonas Brothers. In addition to the already star-studded tracklist, the deluxe version now includes songs with ERNEST (“Bottle’s Bout Dead”) and Leon Bridges (“Horizon”).

“Bottle’s Bout Dead” is a metaphor for a relationship that is knowingly nearing its end. Comparing the relationship to a drink at the end of the night, it is as if you know the night is basically over, you just want to finish the last few sips before you call it quits.

“‘Cause this bottles ‘bout dead, just a couple more drops / that open sign’s on, but it’s ‘bout to turn off / this watered-down dream in the bottom of a glass / is all the proof we need, some things don’t last ”

Among a collection of songs that bounce back and forth from traditional country, this song is one of the more direct country songs on the album. Its unique and eclectic arrangement is perfect for a country fan that wants a more modern sound or for music fans in general that want a taste of country music’s incredible songwriting and vocals.

The album’s deluxe release with two additional songs should be able to hold fans over for a little longer as they await the release of Diplo’s ‘Chapter 2’ Album.

NYCS First Impression: Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley ‘Snake Oil’

Diplo Thomas Wesley Snake Oil

The year is 2015. You are at the club with your friends when you hear Justin Bieber’s synthesized voice sing “I need you, I need you, I need you the most” over the speakers and everyone in the crowd screams in excitement. The producer behind the Grammy Award-winning song, “Where Are Ü Now” is Thomas Wesley, better known as American DJ, Diplo. If you were a betting man/woman, you would have never guessed Diplo would drop a country-inspired album, but here in 2020, we don’t know what to expect anymore. Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley, Chapter 1: Snake Oil released today (May 29).

Although raised in Miami, Florida, Diplo was born in Tupelo, Mississippi – the same town in which Elvis Presley was born, so country music was always in his blood. He first dipped his feet in the industry when he released his remix to the popular Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus hit, “Old Town Road,” but received even more attention with his collaboration with country star, Morgan Wallen on “Heartless.” The song is being played on both mainstream pop and country radio and was recently certified platinum; it is becoming a staple in Wallen’s live set as well. A remix to the song with Julia Michaels was released earlier this year and all three songs appear on the new album. Michaels, who has been working with a lot of country artists as of late, also appears on the eighth song on the record, “Real Life Stuff” with Clever. Over an acoustic guitar and thumping bass, Michaels sings about wanting a real relationship with her significant other.

Although we would classify this as an EDM album, there are some real aspects of country on it. The Intro sets the mood and puts the listener inside an old western saloon. Orville Peck, the featured artist on the track, talks over an acoustic guitar, saying he wishes there was more trouble in this town. In “So Long,” Cam sings about a troubled man who acts independent but is really looking for love. Diplo adds produced-sounding string instruments to the chorus, including a fiddle, that is the perfect representation of this new sub-genre he has created.

“I know you’re fine doing life on your own / that doesn’t mean you should spend it alone / ‘Cause boy, you’ve been flying low for so long / but I think it’s time to give your heart / your heart what it wants”

Diplo gives us a brand new version of the classic square dance in “Do si do” and it’s no surprise he chose “The Git Up” singer, Blanco Brown, to feature on this track. Brown gives the dance’s instructions in a whisper and harmonica solos serve as the bass drops in the song. “Heartbreak,” featuring Ben Burgess, is probably the most country-sounding song on the album. Burgess paints the fictional picture of a whole bar strip closed by eight o’clock because no one needs alcohol to drown the pain and every song playing on the jukebox is a party song. To the average person, this isn’t an ideal situation. However, Burgess is content with his not-so-perfect life because “heartbreak makes the world go ‘round.” Instead of being upset about his break-up, he is going to raise his glass to the fact that there are better days ahead.

Paying tribute to your roots is a classic theme in country music and Diplo covers it on this album with “Hometown.” Zac Brown and Danielle Bradberry play the role of a couple who would like to get to know each other better. They decide to visit their respected hometowns together so they can learn more about each other’s pasts and make sense of why they are the way they are now.

“We’ll pump gas before we pay for it / on some backroad, ain’t got no name for it / Headlight shining ‘til forever /Promise you gon’ know me better”

Other more pop-inspired songs we love are “Lonely” with the Jonas Brothers, “On Mine” with Billy Ray Cyrus’ daughter Noah Cyrus, and “Dance With Me” with Young Thug and country star, Thomas Rhett. “Dance With Me” has some funk vibes to it, which are familiar to Rhett, as songs such as “South Side,” “I Feel Good,” “Country Gold” and “Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time” are all funk-infused.

This album is a great representation of Diplo’s roots, showcasing his creativity, and how versatile these modern country singers are with their cross-genre collaborations. As we are beginning to see many artists blend the genre lines, we believe it will introduce fans of all music to the country genre and give them a taste of what makes our industry so special! Although we are unsure if any of these will be embraced by country radio as positively as “Heartless” was, we feel these songs will fit perfectly into the fun vibes that lower Broadway brings to Nashville and country music fans.

NYCS Picks

  1. Hometown
  2. Heartbreak
  3. Dance With Me

Morgan Wallen, Diplo and Julia Michaels Release “Heartless” Music Video

Heartless

Back in August 2019, Morgan Wallen surprised fans with “Heartless”, an EDM collab with music producer Diplo. After racking up over 80 million streams, the two announced that pop singer-songwriter Julia Michaels would be joining them for a remix and music video.

The country-dance track, originally sung solely by Wallen, remains pretty similar: his vocal performance is intense and soul-crushing; he’s heartbroken that the girl he likes is stringing him along, all while still being catchy.

The remix opens with Wallen singing the words “heartless” as an introduction, and then Michaels opens the first verse. Her soulful, songwriter’s voice glides through the verse and into the chorus where she is joined by Wallen for some crisp harmonies. Wallen sings the rest of the song with Michaels on some backup harmonies, and their voices sound great together, especially on the last chorus.

It’s exciting to see this song take off and to see Wallen gain new fans all around the world. Wallen is currently on his headlining ‘Whiskey Glasses Roadshow’ tour, playing shows all around the country.

Morgan Wallen Joins Forces with Diplo in “Heartless”

Diplo, Morgan Wallen, Heartless

Big Loud Records recording artist, Morgan Wallen is taking the country world by storm with his music. Met with a positive reception for his debut record If I Know Me, the singer-songwriter has already garnered two consecutive number one hits with “Up Down” featuring Florida Georgia Line, and “Whiskey Glasses.” Wallen is teaming up with a superstar in the music industry yet again, collaborating with EDM DJ and producer, Diplo on their new song “Heartless.”

After just one listen, “Heartless” is a song that already feels like a smash hit. It has all the elements of a good song- a catchy beat, relatable lyrics, and a strong vocal delivery. Wallen crushes the vocals on the new jam, wishing the girl he likes would just decide what they were and stop leaving him heartbroken. The track defies genre rules and barriers, as Wallen’s voice blurs lines.

“But why you gotta be so heartless / I know you think it’s harmless / You’re tearing me apart / And girl the hardest part is / You’re so high on attention / Taking miles from inches / Leave me in the darkness / Never finished what we started / Girl why you gotta be so heartless”

This isn’t the first time a country artist has experimented with the softer side of EDM music. The boys of FGL combined their vocals with female artist, Bebe Rexha in their record-holding “Meant to Be,” which sat at the top of the charts for 50 consecutive weeks. Kelsea Ballerini also lent her voice to The Chainsmoker’s “This Feeling,” while Maren Morris showed off her talent in Zedd and Grey’s “The Middle.” We’re excited to see which artists engage in a cross-genre collaboration next. Check out other collaborations that happened in 2018 here and some of our favorite country collaborations here.

As for Wallen, he will continue his opening gig on Florida Georgia Line’s ‘Can’t Say I Ain’t Country Tour’ through September. In the latter half of the year, the superstar in the making will join the Grand Ole Opry’s newest inductee, Luke Combs on the second leg of his ‘Beer Never Broke My Heart Tour.’ For tickets and more information head to morganwallen.com.

EDM DJ Diplo Added to the Bill at Stagecoach Late Night

Diplo

As country music continues to evolve, fans have seen more and more cross-genre collaborations happening. It seems only fitting that one of the biggest country music festivals, Stagecoach, just added famous DJ, Diplo to the bill. Diplo, an EDM DJ is the first DJ to perform at the festival, which takes place in Indio, California on April 26th, 27th, and 28th.

The superstar DJ is slated to host an afterparty in the Palomino tent on the last day of the festival (April 28th), named ‘Late Night in Palomino featuring Diplo.’ This is the first after party thrown as a part of Stagecoach. It’s possible that prior to April, a country music artist may announce a collaboration with the electronic DJ, such as past duets with EDM duo, ‘The Chainsmokers’ with Kelsea Ballerini and Maren Morris’ collaboration with Zedd and Grey.

In a special video announcement above, a Stagecoach representative sat down with Diplo asking what was next for him. Donning a cowboy hat, the Grammy winner humorously and slyly responded “ It’s Stagecoach,” and later confirmed, “I’m actually going to play it.”

Fans and concertgoers can expect to see cross-genre collaborations as country music becomes more diverse and innovative. Diplo joins superstar country artists such as Cole Swindell, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan, as well as, rising talent Russell Dickerson, Lauren Alaina, Mitchell Tenpenny, and many more artists. For tickets and more information head to stagecoachfestival.com for the three-day festival taking place April 26th, 27th, and 28th.
