Dogs, Heartbreak and Other Things On Every Good Country Album

One of the things that makes country music so iconic is that every single song tells a story. Some are serious, some are silly, and some truly make you think about life. While characters and situations vary across artists, albums, and titles, there are a few subjects found on pretty much every incredible country record.

1. Dogs. Or any animal really. Whether it’s the protagonist of the whole song like in Blake Shelton’s “Ol’ Red” or a part of a clever story like “Move it on Over” by Hank Williams, (wo)man’s best friend is all over country music.

2. Cheating. No one likes a cheater, but man does it make for a good country song! From Carrie Underwood hits like “Before He Cheats”, “Two Black Cadillacs”, and “Dirty Laundry” to newcomer Gabby Barrett’s debut single, “I Hope”, to Sugarland’s haunting ballad, “Stay”, we dare you to find one superstar who hasn’t done a song about this topic.

3. Family. Wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, grandparents, sons, and daughters have all made the cut on hit country albums. One of the most refreshing parts of the genre is how essential family is to the artists, and releasing songs about family can relate to almost every listener just like country newcomer, Caylee Hammack’s “Family Tree”.

4. Beer. Look no further than chart toppers like “Drinking Class” by Lee Brice, “Day Drunk” by Morgan Evans, “Drowns the Whiskey” by Jason Aldean featuring Miranda Lambert, Midland’s “Drinkin’ Problem” and Luke Combs’ newest single “Beer Never Broke My Heart”. These and a hundred others are proof that drinking songs are always a good addition to an album.

5. Heartbreak. Every now and then we need a song that lets us turn down the lights and feel the pain that comes from a love lost, and country music is overflowing with good options. From Carly Pearce’s “Every Little Thing” to Rascal Flatts’ classic “What Hurts to Most”, if you’re looking to let the tears flow, country music has you covered.

6. Summer. Okay this one isn’t on every album, but it’s hard to find an artist who hasn’t released a single upbeat summer smash. If the song is about beaches (Zac Brown Band’s “Toes”), summer love (Luke Bryan’s “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset” and Ryan Hurd’s “Her Name Was Summer”), hitting the lake (Little Big Town’s “Pontoon”) or just an all around good time (Kenny Chesney’s “Summertime”) these songs are perfect for the long days soaking up the sun.

7. Loss. A good album makes you feel, and country songs about losing people you love deliver every time. With gorgeous melodies and lyrics that hit you deep down, tracks like Justin Moore’s “The Ones Who Didn’t Make It Back Home”, Chris Young’s “Drowning“, Diamond Rio’s “One More Day”, and Scotty McCreery’s “Five More Minutes” show that loss is a part of life, and you will get through it.

8. Inspiration. Whether it’s a “you got this” anthem like “Girl” by Maren Morris or “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves, or a reminder that it always gets better like Rodney Atkin’s “If You’re Going Through Hell”, country lyrics are bound to give you the motivation you need to conquer anything.

9. Nostalgia. Thomas Rhett albums are overflowing with these hits, just listen to “Sixteen”, “Remember You Young” and “Centerpoint Road” to name a few. Other top artists have released their fair share too like Keith Urban’s “We Were”, Trace Adkin’s “You’re Gonna Miss This” and Brad Paisley’s “Letter to Me”.

10. Faith. Regardless of personal ideology, songs about believing in something bigger is one of the subjects that make country albums so powerful. While some songs name it outright (George Strait’s “I Saw God Today”), others convey the strength that comes from trusting the universe (Brooks and Dunn’s “Believe”) and both are country staples.

Regardless of who you are listening to, each and every country album is bound to have a little something for everyone.

Country Music: Who’s Listening?

Country Music Who's Listening

It’s no surprise that country music and its fan-base has seen unprecedented growth in the past few years, for a variety of reasons. Country songs are being played on pop radio, are on multi-genre playlists, many great cross-genre collaborations happening, country artists are frequently featured on many specials and TV shows, and an increase in social media presence, among other things, has allowed many more people to be exposed to country music. Which leads to the question: When it comes to country music, who’s listening?

According to Spotify, the majority of country music listeners are from the United States, but the genre has grown internationally; since 2015 there has been a 21% increase in foreign listeners. As a result of international growth, artists are increasingly touring more in other countries. Longtime fans know that country music is popular in Canada and Australia, but South Africa, many countries in Europe, particularly Northern Europe, and some countries Southeastern Asia have a significant fan-base as well.

In the United States, country music continues to grow as well. According to research from the Country Music Association, 40% to 41% of females from every generation from Baby Boomers to Centennials listen to country music; in contrast, male listeners are 39% of Baby Boomers and Generation X, respectively, 38% of Millennials, and 27% of Centennials. Overall, 42% of the United States listens to the genre.

Also, according to the Country Music Association, country music has a presence in every major region of the United States, with 30% to 55% of the population of each region fans of the genre. There has also been an increase in the diversity of the country music fan-base as well, as  Hispanic and African American consumers have doubled and tripled, between 2010 and 2005 to 2015.

Nielsen reported in July of 2018 that country music was the leading radio format for this year, which is no surprise. It consistently has been one of the top performing, if not the top performing radio formats for years.  For country music fans, it will certainly be exciting to see how the genre continues to change and grow in 2019. Brantley Gilbert was right in saying that “Country Must Be Country Wide.”

Tips & Tricks for Scoring Tickets to Your Favorite Shows

Everyone knows the feeling of finding out that one of your all-time favorite artists are going on tour and coming to a venue near you. First, you experience the overwhelming excitement and “I have to go” feeling. Then, the eventual realization that seems like everyone else also wants to go, hits you. Even if the show is sure to sell out here are some tips and tricks to score tickets to the big show.

  1. Artist E-Newsletters – Subscribing to artist e-newsletters is a great way to find out about tour information. These e-mails usually include show information and pre-sale codes to all subscribers, not just fan club members. Other, unique and exclusive options are also generally announced via e-newsletter. Additionally, if more shows are added to a tour or tickets are added to a specific show you’ll be sure to find out first through these special e-mails.
  2. Venue E-Newsletters – Venues send out their own newsletters and sometimes include venue specific pre-sale dates and codes; plus venues occasionally announce show dates before a whole tour schedule is announced.
  3. Credit Card Pre-sales – Some credit cards partner with ticket sellers to offer pre-sales or exclusive packages to cardmembers before they go on sale to the general public. These offers might be announced last minute and in limited quantities, so be sure to check frequently
  4. Be Prepared – If all else fails, be prepared on the day and time that tickets go on sale. Before the on-sale time create an account or log-in to your account on the ticket seller website, before the on-sale time. Have your credit card information ready and be on the page for the specific tour date you would like to attend, so that when tickets go on-sale all you need to do is refresh the page.
  5. Check Back Later –Worst case, if you fail to get tickets when they go on-sale check verified ticket resellers frequently to see if anything becomes available. Tickets can usually be purchased up to the day of the show, so you might have some last minute luck!

Which tour are you most looking forward to catching in the new year? Nash FM Stage 17: David Lee Murphy

David Lee Murphy

Early Tuesday Afternoon (Feb. 13), Nash FM 94.7 Hackensack Meridian Health Stage 17 hosted David Lee Murphy for an intimate Up Close & Country performance.

The Grammy-nominated country hit-maker kicked off his set with “Party Crowd,” one of the biggest party songs of the 90s. He then went on to sing a career changing track he penned for Jason Aldean, “Big Green Tractor”, as well as “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not”, the #1 song he wrote for Thompson Square.

Murphy has spent the past several years concentrating on songwriting and producing, penning numerous #1 hits over the past three decades like “Living in Fast Forward” for Kenny Chesney, “Anywhere With You” for Jake Owen and “The Only Way I Know” for Jason Aldean.

Now, for the first time in thirteen years, Murphy is putting out new music with his forthcoming album, No Zip Code. The record was co-produced by Buddy Cannon and longtime friend Kenny Chesney, and features Chesney on the debut track, “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.”

“How do you tell Kenny No?” Murphy jokingly tells the Nash fm crowd before playing the new uptempo track. Following the already popular song, Murphy closed his set with the #1 single and timeless classic, “Dust On The Bottle.”

Listen to David Lee Murphy’s latest single, “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” and additional popular tracks below. Check out the full live show at Nash fm here and listen to Nash FM 94.7 daily for your chance to win a seat at these intimate shows.
