The Beginning:

Today our spotlight shines on an artist that is the true embodiment of that word. Clayton Nile Young joined us to talk about his love of songwriting, music, and getting to share his talent with his fans. Keep reading to learn more.

Young grew up in a military family, moving around the world before eventually settling in rural Middle Tennessee just before high school. Music became a major part of his life early on, starting with the drums after he watched School of Rock and decided he wanted to learn how to play. “I just thought that was the coolest thing I’d ever seen, and I was like, all right, I need to learn how to play drums immediately,” Young shared.

Growing up, he was drawn to rock music, particularly the emo and angsty sounds that defined much of his teenage years. After moving to Tennessee, the singer discovered Bluegrass music, eventually becoming an early fan of Ricky Skaggs and Old Crow Medicine Show. He later connected with the folk movement of the 2010s, including The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons, before discovering Tyler Childers. “I heard Tyler Childers, and then now it’s game over,” he shared. “And I was like, all right, this is it right here.”

Although Young spent years developing his instrumental skills, his journey into songwriting was a different experience. “Honestly, I think I’m less of a lyric person,” he admitted. “I think that was probably the most challenging part for me, was to learn how to write songs.”

The Turning Point:

Just before his 16th birthday, Young had a rock-climbing accident that changed his relationship with music. He underwent multiple surgeries and spent nearly a year in and out of the hospital. Unable to play drums while recovering, he turned to an old family fiddle that his dad had kept hanging on the wall as decoration.

His dad had previously told him the instrument was too old to play, but Young eventually convinced him to bring it to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. While recovering, he began teaching himself to play by watching YouTube videos and figuring things out by ear.

His grandmother was another important source of encouragement. She was excited to see a younger family member taking an interest in bluegrass, particularly because older relatives in the family had played the genre. She encouraged him to keep practicing and learn her favorite old-time fiddle waltzes.

“She always told me, ‘Hey, you’re gonna play the Grand Ole Opry one day, so keep practicing,’” Young recalled. At the time, he didn’t necessarily believe her prediction would come true, but as his music career has continued to grow, that moment has taken on a whole new meaning. This dream of playing the Grand Ole Opry officially came true last month.

Today:

Young initially released his first album simply because he wanted to put one out, never expecting it to reach listeners around the world. “I didn’t really think past that,” he said. “I expected a few family and friends to listen to it and be like, ‘Nice, man, sounds good. Good job.’”

His second album, Trails & a View, takes a more cohesive approach, connecting themes of grief, love, and finding direction in life. “One thing that I really wanted to do with this album is make it feel like one big cohesive story,” Young explained. The title track marks a turning point in that story, capturing the realization of losing someone you love. Young described it as the moment when “your love gets ripped from you,” before the album moves into the process of navigating grief.

While continuing to work in medicine, the singer-songwriter has seen his music career grow, with nearly 400,000 monthly Spotify listeners at the time of the interview. He’s also started playing headline shows and festivals, making it increasingly difficult to ignore the possibility of music becoming his full-time career. “It’s getting to the point where it is harder and harder to deny that this does seem to be turning into a full-time thing,” he shared.
