Sheryl Crow, Chris Stapleton, and Friends Shine on CMT Crossroads

Sheryl Crow invited some of her friends for an hour-long special on CMT this past Friday night (9/27) Crossroads: Sheryl Crow & Friends included special behind-the-scenes interviews and intimate performances of songs featured on Crow’s new album, Threads. Instead of the usual Crossroads atmosphere with a large crowd and big stage, this hour-long special was intimate and raw mostly taking place in what seems like an attic turned music room. Guitars hang on the wall and her entire band is playing behind her.

Chris Stapleton is just one of the six artists who joined Crow on the CMT special. Two of the most recognizable voices in the last few decades, Crow and Stapleton sang a song co-written by both of them, “Tell Me When It’s Over.” “When Chris Stapleton says ‘I want to write a song,’ I’m like yes. There’s a few of you who are holding onto that baton and keep it going forward—people who write really great, people who play really great, that know what their influences are. They’re unabashedly unashamed of their influences and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to get you on the record. I just feel like you’re an extension of all the people I’ve loved for me and I love writing with you,” Crow tells Stapleton as they sit down together before their performance.  Crow’s smooth voice blends with Stapletons’s grittiness for the perfect combination. The GRAMMY award-winning songstress played the piano while Stapleton played the guitar.

Her latest studio album, Threads, came out August 30th and features duets with some of the most notable names in music including Johnny Cash, Keith Richards, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.

“I became inspired to record an album of musical experiences with the legacy artists who inspired me to want to be a great songwriter, musician, and producer. It is a celebration with them, and a tribute to them. Just as importantly, I wanted to work with younger artists on this record, who I believe will pick up the torch and continue to light the way for humanity with their stories and their songs for many years to come. Their music inspires me every day,” Crow says about the album.
