Old Dominion hits Joe’s Pub, NYC
What do you get when you put five insanely talented songwriters in a room? Old Dominion, Of course!
The Country/Country-Rock group consists of five guys – Matthew Ramsey (Lead Vocals), Trevor Rosen (Guitar & Keyboard), Whit Sellers (Drums), Geoff Sprung (Bass) & Brad Tursi (Guitar). 4 of the 5 are tied to the state of Virginia, giving them their band name, Old Dominion, a nickname for the state.
Before their own days on the stage, members of the group experienced the limelight behind it. Writing numerous hits including, but not limited to: Kenny Chesney’s, “Save It For a Rainy Day,” Sam Hunt’s “Make You Miss Me,” and Dierks Bentley’s, “Say You Do.”
In late 2014, Old Dominion’s “Break Up With Him,” a song from their first self-titled EP, gained some airplay on Sirius XM Radio’s “The Highway.” It was at that point when we began to see the popularity of the group rise. Old Dominion later released “Break Up With Him” as a single on their debut full-length album, Meat & Candy. (The album released November 6, 2015) “Break Up With Him” would quickly become their first number one hit.
Determined to climb to the top, the group hit the road, playing 180 shows in 2015 alone, including opening up for Kenny Chesney on his Big Revival Tour.
We caught up with the band last night in NYC at Joe’s Pub, where they played two back-to-back shows. Joe’s Pub is a fun, intimate spot. Small tables of 4 fill the room surrounded by a small, front & center stage. Think: “Bluebird Cafe meets New York City.” The band opened with “Shut Me Up,” the lead single from their first EP. They continued with more songs from the album including their second single, “Snapback.”
If their own songs weren’t enough to steal the crowd, than their covers certainly did. They performed songs from their bandmates own (long) list of successful writes/co-writes. This included Blake Shelton’s, “Sangria,” Tyler Farr’s, “A Guy Walks Into A Bar” and many more.
The guys brought it back to their roots with their song, “Nowhere Fast,” in which the audience took a quick liking to, clapping to the beat & singing the words back to Old D. They ended the show with Craig Morgan’s, “Wake Up Loving You,” written by Old Dominion’s, Matthew Ramsey & Trevor Rosen.
These guys are the real deal. They’re talented, entertaining & not to mention, good looking. If you haven’t seen them live yet, make sure to put it on your list of things to do. Old Dominion has quite the future ahead of them & we are excited to follow them into 2016.
The group wraps up the last leg of their 2015 shows this coming Monday, December 21st in NYC at NBC’s Today Show at 8AM. Be sure to tune in!
