On Wednesday afternoon, Maren Morris re-posted indie rock singer-songwriter Hozier’s stripped-down cover of “The Bones” to her social media pages. Little did fans know that on Friday, October 4th, Morris was to release a new version of “The Bones”, this time in collaboration with Hozier.
The new version begins the same way the original starts. The hooky electric guitar leads you right in to Morris’ vocals, and the song stays that way until the second verse. Hozier kicks off the second verse soulfully, cruising through it as if this song had always been a duet.
An interesting choice was made in the last two choruses; Morris & Hozier sing in unison most of the time instead of harmony. Morris sings like this a lot on her new album with country supergroup The Highwomen (Highwomen, released September 6th) & it sounds beautiful on both projects.
The bridge is where Hozier’s tenor voice shines, as he riffs off Morris’ vocals before they go back to the chorus, adding a little more harmony this time around. While this new version of “The Bones” isn’t too different, it brings something new to the song and it’s interesting to hear a male perspective on it, making the song more conversational.
“The Bones” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.
