There are few artists who personify summer like Kenny Chesney. Today (July 12), Chesney released what just may be the summer anthem of 2019: “Tip of My Tongue.”
Despite Chesney’s penchant for beach bars and tiki torches, “Tip of My Tongue,” is lyrically a bit different. Co-written by Chesney, Ross Copperman and Ed Sheeran (!!!), the song offers a clever play on words. “It’s funny how a figure of speech can lead you to all kinds of places,” Chesney says in a press release. “You start talking, and words fall out, and anything can happen. When you go in and write on any given day, the chemistry is what it is. When the idea fell out, we all just laughed and went, ‘Well, what can we do with that?’
On the groovy midtempo track, Chesney sings, “It’s a long way down/ To where I wanna go/ It’s a long way down/ To the center of your soul/ It’s a long way down/ And I’m a loaded gun/ But I love you salt and sugar on the tip of my tongue.”
Sheeran’s influence is clear here, as the pop superstar’s clever wordplay is on full display throughout the track. “I’ve written so much with Ross (Copperman), that’s always easy. He brought Ed (Sheeran) in, and he is such a great writer… The way creativity works in creative people is so different, but it’s always exciting. As a co-write with a new writer, it’s one of the most fun sessions I’ve done in a long time. I get why people love working with him.”
“Tip of My Tongue” is Chesney’s first official release with Blue Chair/ Warner Music Nashville, and is the first taste of a forthcoming new album. While few details have been released yet about that project, it will be produced by longtime Chesney producer Buddy Cannon.
